A letter from our Pastor

May 4, 2007

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

It has been a long and difficult journey since Fr. George Byrne was appointed pastor of St. William of York in July 1985, to this day of Solemn Dedication. With St. Thérèse of Carmel as our patroness, you have become an energetic, generous, and welcoming community. Her spirit of warmth and love permeates our parish family. Since the parish was dedicated to St. Thérèse on September 4, 2003, we have seen a remarkable increase of new parishioners. I am blessed to have been your pastor during the past eight years and to have witnessed the growth of our parish from 300 to 2,000 families in that period of time.

Our parishioners have responded with great generosity and dedication. Many people have worked together on this project and I want to thank you for your efforts and time. Shelly Hyndman, our architect, has captured beautifully the vision of what our church should look like. Mark Penick and his team have admirably taken it from a plan to a reality. We now have a beautiful church, which reflects both our spiritual and temporal growth.

During the planning and construction phase, we desired to develop as a spiritual family. This we achieved through the evangelizing work of dedicated leaders in our faith sharing groups. We hoped our building would reflect the warmth and welcoming spirit that is characteristic of our parish family. I want to extend my sincerest gratitude to all of you who have made our vision a reality. We owe a debt of gratitude to some of our most generous parishioners who sadly have departed this life before the fruits of their generosity had been realized.

It is our hope that all who come here to worship will be inspired to share their faith, hope and love with those they meet.

Sincerely yours in Christ

Very Rev. Nicholas DempseyPastor

Prayer of Dedication

We dedicate this house of prayer to the service of God for all times and ask the Spirit to fill this church and make it an ever-holy place. Here we are called through the waters of baptism to live through grace as children of God; we are gathered to be nourished at the table of the Word and Sacrament and draw the whole world to the salvation of Christ.

Anointings HOW LOVELY IS YOUR DWELLING PLACE Page M- 6

Anointing of the Altar—The altar is dedicated for the Eucharistic feast as the Bishop anoints it with sacred chrism, a visible sign of Christ, the Anointed One.

Anointing of the Walls—The walls of the church are also marked with chrism to declare this whole space to be given over entirely and forever to the worship of God. Four walls are anointed, invoking the image of Jerusalem as a holy city with gates to the whole world.

Incense PSALM 138—THE FRAGRANCE OF CHRIST Page M- 7

The sacrifice of the cross, soon to be made present on this altar, sanctifies the Church, rising to God as a fragrant offering. As the living temples of God, we ask to join our sacrifices with Christ as we pray that all the world be filled with the salvation of Christ.

Lighting of the CHRIST, BE OUR LIGHT... Page M- 8Altar and Church

The altar is prepared for the sacrificial banquet as we clothe it for the Eucharistic feast and adorn it with flowers. Candles are lit, first at the altar, and then festively throughout the church, as the light of Christ shines out from this holy meal to all the world.

Liturgy of the Eucharist When the altar has been prepared for the feast, the bishop celebrates the Eucharist, which is the most important and the one necessary rite for the dedication of the church.

Communion

When Roman Catholics receive communion we truly believe that we are being nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ. We welcome to our Mass those who share this faith in Jesus, as well as those who don’t. While we cannot extend an invitation to non-Catholics to join us in communion, we are grateful for your presence and ask you to pray with us for the unity of all God’s people.

History of

St. Thérèse of Carmel Catholic Community

FROM FARMLAND TO SUBURBAN COMMUNITY

The history of St. Thérèse of Carmel parish is fully entwined with the development of the Carmel Valley community. In a sense, they have grown and matured together. The parish was founded as a response to the planned community, known then as North City West, later renamed Carmel Valley, to serve the Catholics moving into the area.

The land on which the church is built was originally homesteaded in the late nineteenth century. The original owner, having no heirs, deeded the property to his caretaker, Mary Keating. She, in turn, deeded one thousand acres to the Sisters of

Mercy who farmed the land and provided their Mercy Hospital in San Diego with fresh milk and produce every day. The Sisters called their property Mount Carmel Ranch because the hill behind their residence reminded them of Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. Still in existence are the white Victorian house which stands at the base of the hill across the freeway from the church and the cemetery where people from the surrounding countryside have

been buried-Catholics as well as non-Catholics. In the late 1940’s the Sisters of Mercy set aside ten acres to be used for the construction of a church in the future. The remaining property was sold to a land speculator who later sold the land to Bob and Ann Stephens who ran a cattle ranch. After several years, the Stephens’ sold the land on the north side of what is now Route 56 to the Baldwin Company. This was the beginning of the Carmel Valley community of San Diego.

THE WANDERING YEARSThe parish of St. William of York (later undergoing a name change to St. Thérèse

of Carmel) was established September 1, 1985 to meet the needs of families moving into the homes being constructed in Carmel Valley. Ann Stephens became the first parishioner. Rev. George Byrne was appointed to be the Founder/Pastor of the new parish. Having no permanent place of worship, the Catholic Community moved to various temporary locations ten times over the course of the next twelve years. Beginning with three families meeting in a restaurant, the community grew to over four hundred families while holding Mass in various office buildings, Torrey Pines High School, and the Del Mar Hilton Hotel. Throughout those years, the parish was blessed because the people never missed a weekend of celebrating the Eucharistic Liturgy. With much relief and happiness, the parish broke ground for the parish’s first permanent building in July 1993. In September 1997, Bishop Robert Brom returned to bless the completed building.

“A TIME TO BUILD”….Ecclesiastes (3,3)As it became evident that Carmel Valley was going to be a huge addition to

the city of San Diego, plans were made for the building of a beautiful new church to accommodate the influx of people. To undertake this daunting task, Bishop Robert Brom appointed the Very Rev. Nicholas Dempsey to be pastor. Father Nick, as he is known to one and all, arrived in July 1999, to begin the formidable task. The new pastor brought

with him a vision of what the new place of worship could be and set about turning the image into reality. Working with the parish leaders and having the backing of the parishioners who participated in a massive building campaign along with generous donors from within and without the parish, enough funds were raised to commence the building of the beautiful structure that is St. Thérèse of Carmel. To those who have been in the parish

for ten, fifteen or twenty years, it is the culmination of a long journey of sacrifice and patience. To more recent parishioners, it is an opportunity to join with us in supporting our community with financial support and participation in ministry. Groundbreaking took place in September 2003, with Bishop Robert Brom, Rev. George Byrne, Very Rev. Nicholas Dempsey, and leaders of church ministries and the congregation participating.

A private Catholic preschool and elementary school is located on the church campus. In March 2003, Sister Agnes Clisson and Sister Anne Perrin, French Sisters from the Institute of the Union-Chretienne de Saint Chaumond, came to talk with Father Nick about opening a private Catholic school on the grounds of St. Thérèse of Carmel parish. Father welcomed the Sisters and in September 2005, Notre Dame Academy was opened. There are presently 318 students at the Academy with 35 staff members. Notre Dame Academy provides an education for the future, rooted in tradition, Foreign Languages, Faith Formation, Computer Science, Music, Physical Education, and Art instruction. It is a fitting legacy to Sisters Agnes and Anne who were called home to God not long after the school was launched.

During construction, the parish was, once again, on the move. Our neighbors in the Carmel Valley Community provided support and locations for our services. Weekend Eucharist was celebrated at Carmel Valley Middle School while daily Mass was in the Ultra Star Cinema in the Del Mar Highlands shopping center. Later, after Cathedral Catholic High School was built, daily Mass was moved to their chapel. Throughout our displacement, our transition was made to run as smoothly as possible by the constant support of our parish staff, ministry leaders, loyal members of the congregation and the Carmel Valley community. The choir and congregation learned that a “joyful noise unto the Lord” could be made anywhere. Whether in an auditorium, a gymnasium, or theatre, the parish community remained steadfast and continued to grow at a rapid rate.

The church was opened for liturgical services on October 1, 2006, the feast of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, our patroness. The Catholic Community in Carmel Valley has now grown to two thousand families and more are registering each week. The Solemn Dedication of our new church on May 4, 2007 is the culmination of a truly blessed journey.

AcknowledgementsThe parish of Saint Thérèse of Carmel is deeply grateful to the founding members of our community whose generous gifts of time, expertise, and financial resources made the construction of our new church possible. We also wish to thank Bishop Robert H. Brom and members of the diocesan staff for their commitment and gracious support throughout our building project. To all parishioners who participated in our building campaigns, today we acknowledge especially your many years of sacrificial giving.

The building of our church has been accomplished through the efforts of many very talented men and women. Their dedication to this project, their integrity and their commitment to excellence are reflected through out our church. We remember them with a deep sense of gratitude as we joyously celebrate the Dedication of our Church. We thank God for their talents and for allowing these people to touch our lives. They have listened to our dreams and our wish list for a sacred church, and they have translated our ideas, principles and values into a beautiful reality. We thank you.
