Happy New Year Logan families!

Welcome back from the December break. We hope all of you had a relaxing time off of school and enjoyed time with family and friends. Thank you again to the Logan community for your ongoing support.

In December we had our first Follett book fair benefiting the Logan Library. Lots of books were purchased and we are excited about the new books this suc-cessful fair will bring to our library.

We also prepared for our January 31st Talent Show with auditions before the December break. Thank you to all the students participating and to the par-ent and teacher volunteers. This is always a fun social event you don’t want to miss. This month we will begin our Science Olympiad preparation with our first meeting on January 9th. Please consider attending our monthly meetings or contact me if you want to get more involved.

Dear Logan Families,

Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope that everyone had a wonderful break. We have enjoyed welcoming the kids back to school and settling into our routines again as we start the New Year. Below are just a few reminders about upcoming events and important dates.

NWEA Testing

We began our Winter NWEA MAP testing this past week. As a reminder, the NWEA MAP tests are given three times per year (except in Kindergarten where it is administered twice and Young 5s where students do not take NWEA MAP tests). Students are tested in reading and math. These tests are used to monitor students’ progress, to identify students who may need additional support, and to better understand students’ learning needs. Classroom teachers will share specific dates that their classes will test. We hope to have all testing complete by the end of January. Please encourage your child to do his/her best work.

Kindergarten Round Up

Kindergarten & Young 5s Round Up will be on Wednesday, February 12 from 6:00 to 7:30pm. Any student who will be five on or before September 1, 2020 may attend Kindergarten. Young 5s need to turn five between May 1, 2020 and December 1, 2020. Round Up is for parents AND children. Children will have an opportunity to meet some of our teachers as well as spend time in a Kindergarten or Young 5s classroom. While they are busy, we share with you what you can expect at Logan and answer any questions you might have. Please help us spread the word!

Reminder - City of Ann Arbor 2020 Deer Management Program

Select City of Ann Arbor parks, nature areas, and certain university properties (pending final authorization), will be closed daily January 2nd-26th from 3 PM to midnight. The City of Ann Arbor deer management program calls for the lethal removal of up to 150 deer. Complete details and a list of park closings is available here.

Q: What is your favorite game?

A: I love the card game “SET”. I was a boss at that when I was in 5th grade. I also love Spoons. There is no mercy at my house when you play that game.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: Working on my house (wood-working).

Q: What is the grossest thing you have ever seen?

A: Gutting a deer. When hunt-ing, you have to field address the deer (make it lighter) so that you carry it.

Q: What is your favorite sub-ject to teach?

A: Math for sure! Science is my sec-ond favorite. Math and Science both deal with numbers. Numbers are easier for me to understand than En-glish words.

Q: Do you like fruit or vegetables better?

A: Vegetables because they are crunchier.

Q:Where did you grow up?

A:Ann Arbor, MI. I went to Bry-ant, Pattengil, Tappan, & Pio-neer. For college I went to WCC and Eastern.

Q:Why did you become a teacher?

A: I became a teacher because kids are so inspiring to me.

Q: Did you have any bullies in school?

A:Yes, I was bullied in elementary school and middle school (6,7,8th grade).

Q: What’s the grossest thing you have eaten?

A: When I went fishing with my Un-cle once, we had dance eating. You

Q: Who was your favorite teacher in the School?

A: My high school teacher named Mr. Armstrong. He was my Physics teacher at Logan.

Q: Any bad memories from school?

A: I remember when I was in elementary school. I remember feeling like I didn’t have any friends because I didn’t speak English well.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: Anything spicy!

Q: What is your favorite drink?

A: Coffee.

Q: What is your favorite game console.

A: Nintendo Switch and PS4

Q: What is your favorite Restaurant.

A: Poke Fish. They give you a bowl of rice, then you get to pick a protein and any vegetable you like. It’s pretty much sushi in a bowl.

Jasmine is a 5th grader at Logan. She enjoys playing basketball & soc-cer, creating new books, reading comic books, and dancing. She loves spending time playing cards and board games with her Mom and two big sisters when at home.

A note from Logan First grade teacher Ms.Krile

For those of you who are new to Logan my little sister Katie is a heart survivor. At age 32

she was diagnosed with a VERY serious heart condition. After MANY surgeries and trial and er-

ror with meds I can now tell you she is living each day thankful to have it. It has been a tradition

at Logan the last TEN years that the staff and students wear red to honor not only my sister but

all mothers, wives, sisters, daughters and friends suffering from heart related issues. I will come

around and take pictures to send to my sister. I am excited to share that through this terrible ex-

perience has come something great…..my sister has been asked to be a NATIONAL spokes person

the last two years for women’s heart health. Her story may just save a life!!

Science

Third grade has been working hard on our Wild Wacky Weather Science unit. Students designed tools for collecting precipitation and for measuring the wind; then they used the data collected to compare and predict weather patterns.

Math

We are close to the end of unit 4 (Measurement and Geometry) in math. Students explored and identified characteristics of polygons, distinguished between area and perimeter and used math-ematical thinking to explain their thoughts. We are looking forward to beginning unit 5 Fractions next week.

Social Studies

We have just started our Michigan History Unit. Students are learning how to be History Detec-tives and answer the 5 questions of History. We are excited as we begin studying Michigan’s first people. Social Studies is also a collaboration of all learning subjects. We practice Math when we study timelines and maps, we practice Reading when we research events from History, and we practice Writing when we elaborate on those events and create our own Historical Fiction narra-tives.

We are looking forward to PLTW (Project Lead the Way) which will be starting next month. Stu-dents explore simple machines such as wheel and axles, levers, the inclined plane, and more. They investigate the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. Angelina, Mylo, and Suzi go on a field trip to the zoo and are faced with the design problem of how to rescue a trapped tiger. Students then apply their knowledge of forces and devise a way to rescue a heavy zoo animal while keeping it safe throughout the process.

What are my kiddosup to in Music?

Y5/Kinders: Our Y5 and Kindergarten friends havebeen having lots of fun exploring their light singingvoices, echoing vocal patterns, discovering theirbeat, and learning new songs in a variety ofranges/meters.1st Graders: I have been so impressed with how much our singing voices have grown this year! If I had to useone word to describe this group of kiddos, it would be BRAVE. This group is constantly surprising me withtheir willingness to improvise and sing solo tonal and rhythm patterns on their own. 2nd Graders: They have become experts at reading patterns in duple meter, and they are working towardsbecoming triple meter experts! We explored harmony by having 2nd graders sing chord roots on solfege (Doand So) while Ms. Allen sang the melody line to the song Skip to My Lou.3rd Graders: They are becoming experts at singing rounds. 3rd graders sounded beautiful when they weresuccessful at performing the song Round and Round in a 4-part round, all the while nailing their scarf routine.If you're uncertain if a song is in Major or Minor, a 3rd grader will easily be able to help you. They are reallylooking forward to starting ukulele soon!4th Graders: We are full swing into our recorder karate program. For each recorder song students can playsuccessfully (maximum 2-3 mistakes), students earn a recorder belt. Currently as a class, we are working onour Green belt songs. Some students have worked ahead by either sending videos to my email([email protected]) or coming in at Lunch recess (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays only). We officiallyhave two Black belt students, Erin Kim in Mrs. Asher's class, and Lorena Moore in Ms. Fawk's class.5th Graders: I am so proud of my Logan 5th graders! This grade has grown so much; not only as musicians,but as and people. Hearing them sing is such a highlight of my day. When they are not jamming out on theirukuleles, they may be in the midst of one of their favorite games: Concentration. Concentration is arhythm/steady beat game where the goal is to be number one. 5th graders have to stay on the beat, and if theymiss their number, or get off the beat, they have to move to a higher number. 5th graders try their best to beatMs Allen (and they often succeed)!

PTSO EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

LOGAN FIRST LEGO LEAGUE JR. 2019 SEASONThe Logan FIRST LEGO League Jr. (1st - 3rd grade) teams had a great season of learning, building and

programming! With our largest group to date (38 students), the teams tackled an architecture challenge,

“Boomtown Build,” based on the global FIRST curriculum from Lego Education.

The six teams from Logan worked together to develop cities to create happier, healthier environments

that are supported by accessible, durable, and environmentally-friendly buildings made of LEGOs. The

teams presented their models, programming skills and posters on December 7 in Canton at the regional

expo.

The teams did a great job showcasing all they learned this season. We hope they are very proud of their

efforts!! We received team recognition across all categories - Design, Teamwork and Programming. Many thanks for the tremendous support of the coaches and families to make this program a success!
