Editor’s Pick, the Ellis Boston Show: This vargueno might well have served as a Spanish ambassador to Naples. Varguenos are perhaps the most representative of Spanish furniture. The form originated in Toledo in the 15th century, but reached its maximum splendor in the 17th and 18th centuries. When Naples was a Spanish colony, varguenos were sent to decorate the Spanish palaces and consulates in Naples; a vargueno was a representative of the Spanish court, so it had to be spectacularly magnificent. The upper part consists of small drawers and cupboards, with a number of cunningly concealed secret drawers for important keys, jewelry and gold coins. The lower part is a vargueno table. The main materials were walnut and ebony, decorated with bone, ivory and tortoiseshell. Price on application – the piece will stay in Boston until its next show.Alcocer Anticuarios, Madrid, Spain. [email protected]. Boston representative: [email protected], www.alcoceranticuarios.com.

At Ellis, Robert Lloyd showed this spectacular and rare silver wine goblet, hallmarked for London, 1608 with maker’s mark “TR.” Robert told me that it was particularly rare because it was domestic, not ecclesiastical: Almost all of the few goblets surviving from this period were for communion wine. The luscious grapes on this one, however, spoke of a far more secular and
sensuous use. $55,000.Robert Lloyd, Inc., Gallery
63, 1050 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10022. 212- 750-8752, [email protected], cell 516-835-8394.
This nailed, leather covered trunk was dated 1709 and initialed for David Stoddard of Boston (1685 – 1723). Gary told me that he thought the trunk was probably made and decorated in Holland. It was accompanied by an unusually comprehensive provenance that named each family member who inherited it through eight generations. Gary purchased it from the latest inheritor. You have to wonder about the circumstances that made him decide to sell it. $6,000 at ADA/Deerfield.Langenbach’s Fine Art and Antiques, 61 Summer St, Kingston, MA 02364. [email protected].
A wonderful solid stance, and great patina that showed worn areas in a warm, chestnutty red – those were qualities that caught my eye. But the Chippendale form is pretty good, too! The chair was from Western Maryland of the lower Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, 1760-1780. The primary wood was walnut, the secondary chestnut. Sumpter Priddy asked $24,000 for it at ADA/Deerfield.Sumpter Priddy III, Inc, 323 South Washington St, Alexandria, VA 22314. 703-299-0800, [email protected], www.sumpterpriddy.com.
This huge pipe, just over 6’ long, was in Hilary Nolan’s booth at ADA/Deerfield. It was made of tin, painted to resemble white clay, an American trade sign from the early 19th century and it was $4,500.Hilary & Paulette Nolan, P.O. Box 583, Falmouth, MA 02541. 508-548-0127, [email protected].
This French majolica centerpiece was made by Jerome Massier in the 1880s. The birds looked English to me, finches and titmice, but perhaps they lived in France as well. Whatever, it was a charmer for $6,950 at Ellis.Cara Antiques, showing at Treasure Island, 950 Central Avenue, Naples, FL. 215-499-5604, [email protected], www.caraantiques.com.
“The Great Bartholi Statue. Liberty Enlightening the World. The Gift of France to the American People. Erected on Bedloe’s Island, New York Harbor. The statue is of copper bronzed, 148 feet in height, and is to be mounted on a stone pedestal 150 ft high, making the extreme height 298 ft. The torch will display a powerful electric light and the statue thus present by night as by day, an exceeding grand and imposing appearance.” There is nothing else to know about the statue, previewed in this Currier and Ives print of 1885. (Shhh, they got it wrong: The statue is, apparently, 305 ft., 6 in. tall.)The Philadelphia Print Shop brought it to Ellis, price on application. The Philadelphia Print Shop, 8441 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA, 19118. 215-242-4750, [email protected], www.philaprintshop.com.
If you’ve got the right spot for it….This hooked rug, at 7’ 10” long is one of the largest that Tom Jewett had ever seen. It was in spectacular condition, bright colors and had a charming folky subject of two dogs surrounded by flowers. $6,800 at ADA/Deerfield.Jewett-Berdan Antiques, 15 Hopkins Mill Rd, Newcastle, ME 04553. 207-563-3682,www.jewettberdan.com.

SHOWS & AUCTIONS
James D. Julia AuctioneersThe Julia auction company originated in the mid-
1960s, started by Jim’s father, Arthur Julia, as a small country auction house. By 1974, after graduating from the University of Maine at Orono, Jim purchased the business from his dad and continued to expand and grow as a well-respected auction firm. Today, James D. Julia Auctioneers operate four divisions: Antiques & Fine Art; Rare Glass & Lamp; Antique Toy, Doll & Advertising; and Firearms. It’s a formula that seems to work.
“Currently, between 60-80 percent of all items sold are sold to absentee bidders,” said Andrew Truman, department head Antique Advertising, Toy & Doll Division. “Fewer and fewer live bidders now attend the auctions; they would rather, for the sake of convenience and time saving, participate through an absentee bid process. Julia’s organization has been structured to not only serve live participants but also maximize the ease of the absentee bid process.”
And despite changes in the marketplace over the last few years, Truman says that fresh-to-the-market, quality goods in good condition, which are conservatively estimated, is still doing well. “’Stuff’ will always be marginal,” Truman noted, “but quality will always take care of itself.”
Antiques & Fine ArtThe Antiques & Fine Art Division is the oldest division
at James D. Julia, and has expanded dramatically over the years. It currently enjoys a national and international clientele. The department head for the Antiques & Fine Art Division is Bill Gage, who is assisted by a Sales Coordinator Tony Greist. They are supported by Katya Tilton, their associate sales coordinator.
This phenomenal trove of Boston Evening Post and other local newspapers from the Revolutionary War period were originally collected by 18th-century Boston merchant Harbottle Dorr. His collecting began in January 1765 in the midst of the Stamp Act controversy and ran every week thereafter for the next 12 years. Harbottle Dorr would write his comments and views on various articles in most of the papers. His daily musings provided a continual “man on the street” perspective from the heart of the rebellion in Boston, Mass. Totaling an astonishing 3,280 pages in four volumes, the offering in this lot represented Volume IV; the first three volumes already residing in the Massachusetts Historical Society.
Volume IV which contains the July 18, 1776 issue, where the first public printing of the Declaration of Independence was published, now joins the other three volumes in the Massachusetts Historical Society’s collection for all to enjoy for generations to come. The lot, which provided an extraordinary historical insight and showed tremendous foresight and commitment sold above its $150,000-300,000 pre-auction estimate for $345,000 on Aug. 25, 2011.

Rare Glass & LampThe Rare Lamp & Glass Division is the largest such division in North America.
This division deals almost solely in rare lamps and glass, occasionally with fine jewelry and silver. Dudley Browne is the department head and has worked with Julia’s since 2001. Dudley originated from Sheridan, Wyo., where he grew up in the antiques and auctions business with his parents. He is supported by Julie Killam (who also supports the Antique Toy, Doll & Advertising division). Julie, who has been with Julia’s for more than 10 years, has mastered almost every position within the company; at one time during a hiatus between department heads, Julie had actually run the Rare Lamp & Glass Division and put together one of its auctions.
At Julia’s Summer Glass & Lamp Auction, Tiffany once again proved to be unstoppable. Of the nearly 100 lamps in the sale, none stood out like this Tiffany Arrowroot table lamp. Combining stunning greens and yellows, the conical shade rests on a pond lily and cattail bronze base. It sold for $92,000 within a presale estimate of $80,000-100,000.
Aside from lamps and lighting was an impressive fresh-to-the-market selection of fine art glass, and once again Tiffany ruled with a leaded glass window using layers of mottled and confetti glass in a mountain forest lake scene that more than doubled the low end of its $30,000-40,000 estimate to sell for $69,000. Rounding out the Tiffany offerings were several Tiffany vases, including a very rare Cypriot vase in an unusual Greek revival metal stand. It sold for $10,925 against a $10,000-15,000 estimate.

Antique Toy, Doll & AdvertisingJulia’s Rare Antique Toy, Doll, Advertising & Coin-Op division
has distinguished itself over many years. It is one of the oldest such divisions in the country. In recent years the division has developed a focus on the higher quality and more valuable items. The department head is Andrew Truman. Originally born and raised in Hallowell, Maine, he later graduated in 1995 from the University of Oregon with a B.A. in English. He taught several years at a private school in Eugene, Ore., then returned to Maine in 1999 and joined the Julia auction firm. Andrew’s division is co-supported by Julie Killam, who also supports the Rare Lamp & Glass division.
Julia’s long and successful history with quality antique toys has resulted in a steady stream of auctions containing rare and unusual items seldom seen anywhere else. This time around, bidders were treated to a taste of the unusual with one of the more elusive of tin windup toys, the Boxer Rebellion clockwork toy by Lehmann. One of only a handful known to exist, it features four figures representing the world’s four great powers of the early part of the 20th century (England, France, Germany and Russia) tossing a Chinese rebel in a blanket, symbolizing the suppression of the rebellion in their struggle for independence. This detailed toy with political undertones is in exceptional original condition and came to the block with a $15,000-20,000 pre-sale estimate. It sold on Nov. 30, 2011 for $18,400.
James D. Julia Auctioneers
At the conclusion of Julia’s very successful spring firearms auction, a Maine family came in to meet with Jim Julia and one of his consultants. The family brought with them a rare engraved cased Colt Root very similar to an outstanding example sold in their spring auction. This one, however, had the distinction of being presented to “Captain Pleasanton, USA” with Colonel Colt’s compliments. Captain Alfred Pleasanton graduated from West Point in 1844 and had a gallant war record during the Mexican War and served as general of cavalry during the Civil War with George Armstrong Custer as a member of his staff. The Colt was estimated at $15,000-30,000, but the history of its former owner propelled the final price to $51,750 on Oct. 5, 2011.
In recent years the James D. Julia Rare Firearms & Military division has established itself as the foremost firearms auction company in the world. The success of this division is in part due to department heads Wes Dillon, who joined Julia’s in 2007, and Judy Labbe. Wes attended the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University. He is one of the founding members of
the world-famous Cabela’s Gun Library and eventually became the managing head. Judy first began working at Julia’s in September 1997 as an administrative assistant, gradually taking on more responsibility and moving up within the company, eventually supporting the Firearms division.
