COMPLIMENTARY COPY Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 43, NO. 35 FRIDAY AUGUST 31 , 2012 rom their inception in 1851, the world’s fairs showcased, obsessed over, and enthralled the visiting public with the cutting edge of industry, produc- tion, new materials, and methods, for cre- ating everything from tools to jewelry, fur- niture to textiles. In doing so, artists and manufacturers used breakthrough scien- tific innovations to create art objects that embodied the latest aesthetics and tech- niques. A major co-production of Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, “Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World’s Fairs, 1851-1939” assembles more than 200 art objects from world’s fairs, remarkable not just for their common pedi- gree, but for what they represent: the height of both science and artistry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Carnegie Museum of Art will supplement the traveling portion of this exhibition with a treasure trove of its own objects from fairs, making it the largest venue of the four-city tour, which also includes the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. “Inventing the Modern World” showcas- es objects painstakingly assembled from European and American collections. For co- curator Jason T. Busch, the exhibition repre- sents a true achievement, since “the exhibi- tion checklist comprises decorative arts unattain- able as a group in any one museum in the world.” Co-curator Catherine L. Futter Futter adds, “We looked at literally thousands of decorative arts from around the globe…We kept refining our choices to find the objects that really spoke about innova- tion.” The decorative arts made for world’s fairs often display an unusual tension: the use of tradi- tional styles as a vehicle for progress, employing pre- viously unknown materials and methods to craft works that evoke the aes- thetics of prior art movements. Because early world’s fairs were a gathering of nations in a less globalized time, works typ- ically exhibited a nationalistic pride - while they showcased the most cutting-edge craftsmanship of a given country, they also spurred unprecedented exchange in industri- al and artistic methods. According to Lynn Zelevansky, The Henry J. Heinz II Director of Carnegie Museum of Art, “Inventing the Modern World” embodies an inspirational vision, showcasing inventive design that marries art, science, and technology in the service of improving the human condition.” The exhibition highlights this con- stant exchange, with extraordi- nary works that demonstrate how a certain amount of competition, ultimately, accelerates the pace of artistic innova- tion around the world. Examples of new techniques first show- cased at the fairs are countless. The simple forms of Leó Valentin Pantocsek’s vase and ewer from around 1860, for example, belie its innovative genesis. The fascina- tion with the iridescent surfaces of ancient Greek and Roman g l a s s prompted many man- ufacturers to re-create it, but it was t h e Hungarian chemist Pantocsek who succeeded, applying metallic oxides to the hot glass surface to produce an iridescent coloring. The effect puzzled the minds of fair- goers at the 1862 London International Exhibition, as it was believed that only age could produce the effect. And, because the fairs spurred technological exchange, the technique soon spread. Two decades later, Louis Comfort Tiffany applied the same technology to his popular Favrile line of glassware, which will also be on display. Pittsburgh, long a center of technologi- cal innovation, is well represented in the exhibition, notably by the Westinghouse Radio Broad-casting Panel shown at the 1933 Century of Progress International Exposition in Chicago. Featuring a world map with expanding cir- cles, it illustrates the cen- tral importance of the United States, and especially KDKA Pitts- burgh, t h e world’s first commer- cial radio sta- tion. It reads “ R a d i o Broadcasting As Initiated By KDKA Has Made The Whole World A Neighborhood - 1 9 2 0 . ” Westinghouse used innova- tive materi- als to pro- mote the company’s prod- ucts of mass com- munication, in this instance, Micarta - a new laminate com- posed of canvas, paper, and fiberglass - with accom- panying designs in aluminum and steel, two materi- als that deeply resonate in Pittsburgh. One of the most popular works displayed at the 1900 fair was the 1897 Five Swans tapestry designed by the German painter and printmaker Otto Eckmann. Influenced by both 19th-century Japanese and 15th-centu- ry German woodblock prints, Eckmann’s tapestry embodies the cross-cul- t u r a l exchange of the fairs. Enhanced by bold con- trasts in color, the flattened a n d abstracted subjects and the mean- dering lines are rendered with a strong graphic composi- tion. The 1925 Paris exposition boasted a dazzling array of exquis- ite jewelry and luxury goods. Works from French jewelry firms such as Cartier and Boucheron were notable for their technical virtuosity and inventive combinations of materials, colors, and new processes. The dynamic pattern of the diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds in a bracelet by Boucheron demonstrates the firm’s progres- sive designs and metalsmithing capabilities, illustrating historical and cross- cultural styles popular during the early 20th century. The impressive Art Deco brooch from Tiffany & Co.’s 1939 installation fea- tures an unusual combination of emer- alds and newly fash- ionable champagne dia- monds. The 1925 exposition also displayed major innovations in glass, such as the centerpiece and bowls by J. & L. Lobmeyr. These striking objects showcase the technical and aesthetic expertise of the Austrian firm. In what was known as the “Rare Earth Series,” Lobmeyr actually incorpo- rated uranium into the glass, causing the colors to change under different types of light. A papier-mâché pianoforte and stool (1867) epitomize the remark- able inventiveness of the manufac- turers of decorative arts. Although papier-mâché had been used in Europe for more than a century, the English firm Jennens & Bettridge introduced a dazzling array of complex techniques. Shown at the 1867 Paris fair, this instrument is made of seemingly fragile but highly durable glued and compressed paper pulp, applied sheet after sheet to a wooden core. Embellished with an ebonized surface adorned with gild- ing, mother- of-pearl, and panels of reverse-paint- ed glass with foiled alu- minum deco- ration, the pianoforte stands out as a significant integration of many decora- tive arts tech- niques. By 1939, fairsshowcased futuristic objectsmade of new materials likePyrex, nylon, and stainlesssteel. Even so, the similaritiesbetween the 1851 and 1939fairs and the objects within

innovation and ingenuity,remained a common threadfrom 1851 through 1939.

AUCTION SALE BILLS
“Good distinction overtime about form and surface:that is the key to materialsfrom collections in thissale”, commentedGarth’s Auctions CEO,Jeff Jeffers as he offereddetails regarding materialconsigned from the prop-erty of a late, career mili-
tary man turned antiqueaficionado. Collectorsand dealers have alwayshoped for, if not longedfor, the “eye” to discoverspecial items during theirforays to thrift stores, yard sales, and auctionvenues. This particularGarth’s consignor taughthimself well and hisfinds are just some ofthe highlights from over750 lots of fineAmericana including for-mal and painted furni-ture, folk art, ceramics, fine art and more, whichwill be sold during theAnnual Labor Day WeekendAuction to be held August31-September 1 byDelaware, Ohio-basedGarth’s.
Proud to represent thepassions of Garth’s longtimeclients, Jeffers lauds theefforts of those who studywhenever they could in aneffort to master the “good, better, best” mantra. Mostmay never have museumquality items, but can live
and love the best afforded ata given moment in time. Forexample, a terrific
Chippendale step-back cupboard isamong the fineitems to be offered.Likely from Virginia orPennsylvania, the late18th-early 19th centu-
ry, walnut and pine,two-piece cupboard hasglazed upper doors, threedrawers, paneled lower doorsand bracket feet. The old bluepaint on the interior adds tothe charm of the 87.75” highpiece which is estimated at$4,000 to $8,000. A folksycorner cupboard probablyoriginated in westernPennsylvania, westernMaryland, or West Virginia.
With the original reddishbrown graining and appliedspool turnings painted in adarker color, the cupboard is
estimated at $2,000to $4,000. A dozen
other cupboards willbe sold throughout thetwo-day auction.
As collectors learn, furniture attributed to aspecific cabinetmakeror school of cabinet-makers adds interestand value. A late 18thcentury Chippendalehigh chest of drawersattributed to the DunlapSchool, NewHampshire, is orna-mented with fan andpinwheel carved draw-ers and cabriole legswith ball and clawfeet. The 80” highchest once belonged toBill Samaha(Ohio/Massachusetts)and Rich and SusieBurmann (NewH a m p s h i r e ) .Estimated at $15,000to $25,000, the chest, which previously
sold at Garth’s as lot21 on May 20, 1995, isa fine representationof New Hampshire’sforemost school of
cabi -
net-making. A selection of 17additional Chippendale,Hepplewhite, & Sheratonchests will also sell includinglot 173, a
Pennsylvania Hepplewhitewalnut and poplar chest. With French feet supporting
nine dovetailed drawers (fivewith hidden locking mecha-nisms) with edge beading andwhat appears to be the origi-nal brasses and finish, thechest is expected to reach$3,000 to $6,000. Lot 309 isa New England Chippendalecherry and pine chest datingto the second half of the 18thcentury. With high cutout feetextending from one-boardends and a decorativelyscrolled apron, the chest withthree dovetailed overlappingdrawers and three false draw-ers which actually front ablanket chest top section, isof further interest since itnever had hardware (56.75”high, estimate $3,500 to$5,500).
From the private collec-tion of a lady, there are a fewobjects which should garnerquite a bit of attention.Wouldn’t most collectors liketo say that the famous dealerIsrael Sack once commentedon a piece in their collection?Sack did just that about a set-tle bench to sell Saturday. The English oak bench withraised panel construction, a
s e a tcompartment, old finishand a wonderful size onceevoked commentary fromSack that it was “the best”
he had ever seen ofthat form and scale
(estimate $800 to $1,200).Another piece from the same

Sold by Garth’s in May of1995 for famed dealer BillSamaha, this Chippendalehigh chest of drawersattributed to the DunlapSchool, New Hampshire, comes around again andshould be hotly contested ata $15,000 to $25,000 esti-mate.
One of 15 weathervanes tosell throughout the week-end, this quill form coppervane is similar to a longerexample sold by Garth’s inMay of 2011 for $7,050.This example is estimatedat $3,500 to $5,500.

The auction boasted a stellar offering that ranged from early American tin horse drawn pieces to clockwork automotive toys, pedal cars, fine French & German dolls, antique advertising, coin-op, salesman samples, music machines, and much more. For approximately 40 years, Julia’s has established and maintained a sterling reputation for honest and fair dealing, elegant presentation of quality goods, strong and sometimes record prices, and the most competitive commission rates in the industry. We are now accepting quality consignments for our fall Toy & Doll auction. If you are looking for the greatest net return, whether you have one item or an entire collection, please contact us today for a free, no-obligation consultation. Our seller’s commission on expensive items is the lowest in the business at 0%. Below are some results from our most recent auction.
