This year, you didn’t need to be present at Churchill Downs to showcase your finest Kentucky Derby attire. More than 275 hospital patrons and community members of St. Petersburg gathered in their big hats and bright colors to celebrate St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation’s very own, Derby Gala. The Derby Gala (continued from front page)

The Kentucky Derby, like many events in our lives, evokes great memories and feelings of nostalgia. But for many in our community, even their memories are taken away by the effects of neurological disorders. The very word – Alzheimer’s – is a painful reminder that so many are afflicted by one disease, the seventh leading cause of death and the only disease among the top ten causes of death that has no cure. Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia conditions are a growing public health concern, especially as the nation’s mature population expands and continues to age. Progression of the disease not only has a devastating impact on the patient’s ability to function independently, but it also places an emotional and financial burden on families and caregivers.

Responding to the needs of the people, the challenge issued by Mother Teresa O’Neil, founder of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, St. Anthony’s Hospital has officially opened a Memory Disorders Center. The Center is unique because of the services offered by clinical director Dr. Veronica Clement, and the Center’s coordinator, Kim Saberi,

LCSW, who provide support groups, referrals, education, navigation and advocacy. While insurance may cover the costs of testing and diagnosis, the services offered by the licensed clinical social worker are completely reliant on community support. A moving appeal was made by Foundation donor Joan Jaicks, who applauded the hospital for establishing the Center. She remembered her husband, Don, who struggled with memory loss, and encouraged the audience to consider giving to the Center.

It is through the generous support of community members like those in attendance at the St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation’s 2014 Derby Gala that the Memory Disorders Center can continue its mission. You can change the experience families have as they work through these diseases with the help of our esteemed medical, neuropsychological and social work teams. If you wish to support the Memory Disorders Center or another worthy hospital program, please use the enclosed postage-paid envelope to do so.

The excitement in the room was high as guests at the Derby Gala watch a live streaming of the 140th Kentucky Derby.

LifeHelp Cooks to Say “Thank You” to Auxiliary

Donor StoriesCracked countertops, burners that would not heat up and caked-on rust on their mobile kitchen were among the complaints made by the registered dietitians and nurses at LifeHelp Center for Diabetes. The kitchen is used to give cooking lessons to patients. If we could give it a facelift, they thought, it could become functional again.

Proactively, they photographed the issues and sought a proposal that included a comprehensive price quote for a total overhaul. Knowing that the Auxiliary likes to fund equipment purchases that will improve the patient experience, Robert Sherman, executive director of the Foundation, presented LifeHelp’s need to the Auxiliary and the funds were quickly approved.

The staff at LifeHelp showed their gratitude in February by treating Auxiliary members and their guests to a heart-healthy cooking demonstration using the new mobile kitchen. An incredible vegan lunch of quinoa salad, pumpkin soup and truffles made of chocolate and avocado was prepared by dietitians Linda Delorey and Diane West. Diane did the cooking while Linda explained the nutrients of the ingredients and fielded questions from the audience.

“What a fantastic way to say ‘thank you,’” said Auxiliary President Val Rankin. “I did not know such incredible flavors could come from a vegan menu.”

In addition

to the revamp of the mobile kitchen, the Auxiliary provided funds to LifeHelp to purchase a set of new stainless steel cookware for the mobile kitchen and two all-digital blood pressure monitors for the Center’s many community health screenings.

WIP’s Pooled Donations Provide Medical Equipment and Support Programs for St. Anthony’s

Donor Stories

The mission of Women in Philanthropy (WIP) is to leverage the “power of the purse” in making a difference in the quality of medical care for our community. Women are changing the face of philanthropy as they realize their status as an economic force.

This important donor society at St. Anthony’s Hospital commits its pooled financial gifts to improve services, to invest in new medical technology and to fund special projects. Through their generous annual giving, members have purchased life-saving equipment that has positively affected many areas of our hospital. These purchases have included all-digital imaging equipment for the Susan Sheppard McGillicuddy Breast Center, an Arctic-Sun Temperature Management System and a treadmill for the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. The group has also supported the Emergency Center Capital Campaign.

At their annual meeting on February 14, the members enjoyed a Valentine’s Day heart-healthy lunch at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club where they approved their 2014 purchases with lively debate.

For 2014, WIP’s pooled donations totaled $52,000 and they approved the following purchases: a sonogram for I.V. therapy which will allow the I.V. team to increase its services to patients; a portable bedside dialysis unit for critical care patients; support to the new Memory Disorders Center and tuition to train volunteers on Healing Touch pain management therapy. The group also paid an installment on their $25,000 pledge to the new Emergency Center.

2K Fun Run Benefits Mammograms for Women

Donor Stories

The Professionals Guild’s second Miles for Mammograms 2K Fun Run kicked off a great season of fund-raising for the two-year-old group and earned $1,200 for the Mammogram Voucher Program at St. Anthony’s. The program provides free mammograms to women without health insurance or who fall in a coverage gap and will also treat a woman if cancer is detected.

Fifty “runners” donned brightly colored pink shirts, knee socks and tutus for the 2 kilometer tour of downtown eating and gathering establishments that offered complimentary food and beverage specials for all the participants. The Guild and the Foundation wish to thank the following sponsors: The Flying Pig Taphouse, Green Bench Brewery, Ferg’s, Burrito Border and The Ale and the Witch for their generosity.

The Professionals Guild is open to any professional who wishes to support St. Anthony’s hospital with an annual gift. Members pool their donations and purchase equipment for the hospital. In 2013, the Guild purchased ImPACT Concussion Software for athletic trainers in Pinellas County high schools to detect concussions in student athletes.

Good NewsFoundation Grants Seed Money to Get Good Ideas GoingSt. Anthony’s Hospital employees have innovative ideas to help patients and those who work at the hospital’s campuses but don’t always have the money to get them started. The Foundation’s three-year-old ‘Patients First’ and ‘Well Workplace’ funding programs put good ideas into action by supporting these great ideas.

Late last year, the Foundation funded two projects proposed by employees. One was written as a Patients First grant to enhance patient recovery outcomes through employee education. Patrick Love, RN, nurse manager of the Cardiovascular Telemetry unit proposed that a video camera be purchased to record monthly in-service presentations by physicians who address diagnostic and treatment strategies. Love reasoned that if employees were able to check out and view these recordings, the messages could be spread further. The Foundation approved the funds to buy a video camera.

Another grant funded last year was a Well Workplace request made by Heather Rutkowski of the hospital’s volunteer resources department. Heather wrote in her grant proposal that her department needed a full-size refrigerator/freezer for the Caring with Cookies program in which volunteers bake and serve fresh cookies to visitors and patients; a nice way to say “welcome” to our hospital. The volunteer office was using another department’s freezer for their cookie dough. An added benefit to the refrigerator/freezer is the volunteers now have a place to store their lunch or other special treats.

This oven bakes cookies for volunteers to distribute. The smells that waft through the hospital lobby are irresistible.

Volunteer Valerie Lundberg loads frozen cookie dough into the new refrigerator/freezer purchased for Volunteer Services through the Foundation’s Well Workplace Funding Program.

Scanner, Optical Module and Pump Purchased by Auxiliary

The Hospital’s Auxiliary, in its 65th year of existence, continues to change the face of the hospital and improve the care provided to its patients by making significant equipment purchases. In January, the Auxiliary decided to purchase a bladder scanner for shared use among several patient care units and a Vigileo Optical module for the Intensive Care Unit.

The bladder scanner uses ultrasound technology to determine a patient’s bladder volume in order to provide accurate data to aid in the diagnosis of common urological conditions. The optical module allows for noninvasive continuous monitoring of a patient’s blood gas concentration for the relay of vital information without a blood draw.

In March, the Auxiliary agreed to purchase an intra-aortic balloon pump which increases the heart’s ability to deliver blood to outlying capillaries and improves oxygenation. It will be used primarily by the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.

Good NewsHighly Regarded Accreditation Awarded Again to Breast Center

St. Anthony’s Hospital’s Susan Sheppard McGillicuddy Breast Center has once again been recognized by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The Breast Center has received a three-year accreditation and is the only hospital in St. Petersburg with a breast health program that has been designated by the NAPBC. Only those centers that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a strict evaluation process and review of their performance receive NAPBC accreditation. This accreditation is highly regarded in the medical community due to its rigorous standards which include proficiency in the areas of center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.

The Breast Center provides clinical and support services, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and counseling. A team of specialized clinicians, a radiologist and a patient care navigator work closely together to provide coordinated care to address the individual breast health needs and concerns of each patient. St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation commends the Breast Center’s comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The center remains the only facility in St. Petersburg with both the NAPBC accreditation and the Breast Center of Excellence designation from the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The Susan Sheppard McGiillicuddy Breast Center Team is led by radiologist Claudia Bundschu, MD, center, who acts as medical director for the center. From front to back are Sonja Ancrile, Yvonne Krawczuk, Brigid Brennan, Latricia Poole, Dr. Bundschu, Dawn Chagnon, Linda Smith, Mary Long and Marie Rorke.

2014 Legacy Dinner and Awards

The St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation, as well as 250 guests, honored hospital “family” at the annual Legacy Dinner on February 20, 2014. The following three awards are given each year to persons nominated by members of our community: Helen D. Roberts Philanthropy Award, Roy G. Harrell Jr. Leadership Award and the Hippocrates Award. Nominations are accepted throughout the year and are reviewed every December by a multidisciplinary committee that carefully selects the award winners.

Helen D. Roberts Philanthropy AwardThe Helen D. Roberts Award recognizes an individual’s generosity in giving of his/her time, talent or monetary contributions to not-for-profit organizations devoted to educational, cultural and social or public health concerns. Sr. Susan McGillicuddy, OSF and hospital volunteer, was rightly called the Suncoast’s benefactress. Sr. Susan has been a part of St. Anthony’s since 1991. She began her teaching career in 1960 and then moved into health care in 1978. She and her brothers, former U.S. Senator Connie Mack and Dennis McGillicuddy, have worked diligently with the Foundation for the Susan Sheppard McGillicuddy Breast Center, which is named for their mother. Roy G. Harrell Jr. Leadership AwardJune Wedding, hospital auxiliary member and longtime volunteer, was the well deserving recipient of this year’s award. The Roy G. Harrell Jr. Leadership Award recognizes an individual who demonstrates vision, initiative, motivation, selflessness and commitment through outstanding community service and leadership benefiting the community. June has served two terms as auxiliary president, and she represented the auxiliary on the Association of Florida Health Care Auxiliaries and Volunteers State Board. She was the 2013 Panhellenic Eleanor Jones Tanner Woman of the Year and was a member of the 2013 St. Petersburg Queen of Hearts Court.

Hippocrates AwardThe award recognizes an individual physician or medical practice that demonstrates selflessness and dedication to the community through generous donations of time, talent and treasure. The admirable Teresa Bradley, MD, St. Anthony’s Physician Services president, was the righteous recipient this year. Dr. Bradley served 16 years as staff physician in the emergency department of St. Anthony’s and currently serves as the president of Physician Services at St. Anthony’s. In 2003 she was appointed vice president of medical affairs and served as the hospital’s interim president before the appointment of President Bill Ulbricht. Dr. Bradley has a long record of service in the community, including serving on the board of Community Action Stops Abuse (CASA) and is currently a member of the diabetes equity project.

Keynote SpeakerA highlight from the night included featured speaker, Dr. Anna Pou, a professor of otorhinolaryngology at Louisiana State University. Dr. Pou has been working actively on three laws involving the need for legal protection for health care providers rendering care under extreme circumstances.

Dr. Pou was working at Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005. In the four years following Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Pou helped write and pass three laws in Louisiana offering immunity to health care workers from most civil lawsuits (except in cases of intentional misconduct) for their efforts in future mass casualty situations.

In her lecture at the Legacy Dinner, Dr. Pou spoke about her experiences during the disaster and discussed the need for widely accepted medical guidelines for altered standards of care, in particular for allocation of resources and widely accepted triage protocols for mass casualty events in the United States.

It is with sincere appreciation that we extend our gratitude to otolaryngologist Donald Lanza, MD, a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and board liaison to the Legacy Dinner event, for reaching out to Dr. Pou and welcoming her to our fine city.

The work of local marine artists Kevin R. Brant, Jon Lee and Thomas Krause.

St. Anthony’s 2014 Inshore Fishing Classic turned out to be a wildly successful event with nearly 40 teams participating and a dramatic rise in sponsorships throughout our community. More than $26,000 in proceeds from this year’s event will help support a capital campaign to purchase a new fluoroscope for the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, which guides the surgeon in performing minimally invasive procedures to open restricted blood vessels leading to and from the heart. Fishing teams as well as family, friends and community members were invited to attend the awards party and Marine Arts Festival that followed the tournament. Light food and drinks were provided by local restaurants in the St. Petersburg area as well as a large display of marine art for sale by local artists.

Another Successful Sprinkles! Cookie Class Benefits Breast Center

Longtime friends, Janet Macris and Suzanne Babcock enjoying their time together at Sprinkles.

Our annual “Sprinkles!” cookie decorating class has always been a huge hit with children, and the adults seem to take nicely to it as well. For the second year in a row, the sold-out class had more than 100 in attendance, all anxious and ready to master the fine art of cookie decorating. Participants enjoyed good company, snacks and beverages, and also received a dozen cookies to take home in addition to their finished masterpieces.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County sent ten “Bigs” and ten “Littles” this year to participate. The “Littles” were sponsored by the St. Anthony’s Auxiliary. We look forward to seeing them again.

We are anticipating an even greater turnout this next holiday season. To be placed on the waiting list for this year’s event, e-mail us at [email protected]. Sprinkles will take place on Saturday, December 6, with all proceeds benefitting the Susan Sheppard McGillicuddy Breast Center at St. Anthony’s Hospital. If you’re looking for tips and techniques on how to make your cookies extra special this Christmas, you won’t want to miss this!

Event News

Excitement and Praise for New Memory Disorders CenterThe remarkable turnout at the grand opening of the Memory Disorders Center provided a beacon of light for the large population surrounding St. Petersburg affected by memory disorders. On April 1, approximately 75 donors and fellow team members at St. Anthony’s Hospital came to show their support. This new facility on the St. Anthony’s campus will house the best medical practitioners in the community and offer all of the components needed for proper diagnosis and support for families. The Center is led by neuropsychologist and clinical director, Veronica L.
