Welcome To Annunciation Parish!

Uniting The Catholic Community of Newington, Established June 29th, 2017

If you are new to our parish or if you have been away from the practice of the faith, we extend a warm welcome and hope you feel at home here. Our parish is nourished by your presence today. We invite you to introduce yourself to the priest or deacon after Mass so that we can greet you. We hope you will make Annunciation Parish YOUR parish.

All children are welcome to be baptized in the Catholic Church. It does not matter if the parents are single or married outside the Catholic Church. ALL CHILDREN no matter what, are welcome to the baptism of the Lord, as long as they will be raised Catholic. Annunciation Parish usually offers baptisms on the first and third Sundays. To get started, please call the parish office - Saint Mary (860-666-1591) or Holy Spirit (860-666-5671). We can’t wait to welcome your child into the life of Christ and our Church through Baptism.

Readings for the Week of November 4, 2018

First Reading: Deuteronomy 6:26

The “Shema” (“The Lord is our God, etc.) prayer became the main

Jewish confession of faith. Jesus would later identify it as part of the

greatest commandment.

Second Reading: Hebrews 7:23-28

Jesus’ priesthood supersedes that of the Levites. His saving

intercession lasts forever. His sacrifice of Himself was the perfect act of

love.

Gospel: Mark 12:28b-34

By combining love of God with love of neighbor, Jesus teaches the

importance of both. The scribe’s understanding of this leads him to

accepting the kingdom.

A Reception For Deacon Jim Shiels in Honor of His Retirement is Planned

For Sunday, November 11th.

Please join us in welcoming him at the Father O’Connor Center, Church of

the Holy Spirit, beginning at 1:00 PM.

Daly Notes

November is the month that the Catholic Church remembers our beloved deceased. The month

of All Souls gives us the opportunity to remember those who have gone before us, and pray for

their souls. Some of you may have an envelope for All Souls Day in your packet, but if you do

not have an All Souls envelope, they are available at the doors of the Church. These envelopes

will be placed on the altars both at Holy Spirit Church and Saint Mary’s, with the names of

your loved ones and will be kept on the altars for all Masses in November, as our parish prays

for our deceased loved ones.

Praying for the dead is something we should all do. Our parish will also celebrate two special

Masses for those parishioners who have died in the last year.

The first will be on Thursday, November 8th, 2018 at 7:00 PM at Church of the Holy Spirit.

The second will be on Wednesday, November 14th at 6:30 PM at Saint Mary Church.

Have a great week!

31st Sunday in Ordinary Time / November 4, 2018

Saint Leo the Great, November 10

B orn in the early 400’s into an aristocratic Roman family, the

details of Saint Leo’s early years are mostly unknown. Persuasive

and diplomatic, he was often sent to resolve both theological and

secular disputes among groups, and by the year 431 he was well

known as a priest. Nine years later he was elected as Pope, and accepted the

role with great humility and dedication.

He worked tirelessly to preserve the unity of the Church and its faith, first by rooting out

heresies, particularly Pelagianism (denying the belief in original sin) and Manichaeism (the belief

that all matter, including humans and creation, is evil). An excellent writer, he penned many

letters and sermons that were profound in their theology yet easily understood by laity. His

most renowned was a letter clarifying Jesus’ human and divine nature, which quelled growing

confusion among some Eastern Christians who were questioning that belief and reunified the

Church.

As he protected his flock from spiritual harm, so he protected them from physical

harm – especially against invading armies (including Attila the Hun) and even acted as

peacemaker with the barbarian attackers. Pastoral care was likewise a central focus for Leo,

and he worked to establish charitable groups in Rome for those afflicted by famine and poverty.

He is also recognized as one of the best administrative popes in the ancient world.

After his death in 461, 100 sermons and 150 letters of his were preserved, and due to his

extraordinary writing he was declared a doctor of the Church. St. Leo fulfilled his role as pontiff

with humility and dedication, using his talents of persuasion and diplomacy to protect and

teach those in his charge. May we follow St. Leo the Great’s example, and fulfill the duties of

our vocation with humility and dedication, using our talents to build up those in our care and

bring them into Christ’s flock.

War and Order: The Armistice,

Treaty of Versailles and Evolution of International Law

Thursday, November 8th, 6 – 7 p.m.

November 11, 1918 marked the end of combat in World War I. June 28, 1919 saw ratification of

Wouters, Ph.D., is a professor of international law and international organizations, and founding

director of the Institute for International Law, at the University of Leuven (Belgium). He will reflect

on the end of the “Great War” as the beginning of an era of transnational cooperation in global

governance.
