T he prophet Isaiah inspires us with these words: “Light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.” All of us celebrating the liturgy today praise God for these words of encouragement. Surely each of us knows the gloomy side of life, but to- day’s readings propose a brilliant antidote to misery: the light of service. Isaiah fo- cuses on physical suffering, telling us to provide food, clothing, housing, and equal opportunity to those with limited re- sources. Moving beyond material needs, Saint Paul demonstrates how to proceed humbly when attending to people’s spiri- tual needs. Saint Matthew’s Gospel stirs us to bold action: whatever gifts we have, we must put them at the service of our communities. As Christians, we must en- gage with one another without holding back, letting our light shine before all. ALL IN Today’s readings leave no room for half- heartedness. As beneficiaries of God’s providence, we cannot hold back when serving others. When Isaiah instructs us to share our bread with the hungry, he offers no qualifications. He does not add, “if you think you can,” or “after all of your own needs have been met.” On the contrary, the prophet simply reports that God ex- pects us to care for those in need. In a similar way, the Gospel call is uncondi- tional. Like a city atop a mountain, the Christian life cannot be hidden. Followers of Jesus do not have the option to sit by and wish vaguely for someone else to take care of hunger, homelessness, oppres- sion, and ignorance. God calls us into ser- vice. If we have heard the call, we must respond. PROCEED WITH PRAYER We all agree that caring for others is im- portant. Absolutely no one wants to see a child waste away from starvation. And yet, we often fear to donate time, talent, or money to charitable causes. What if recipi- ents use the money poorly? What if dona- tions promote helplessness and long-term dependence? What if my own situation isn’t very stable? How can I help others when my daily life is so difficult and the future so uncertain? These are legitimate questions. And God wants us to use our intellect when discerning how best to per- form good deeds. But uncertainty must not lead to inaction. If we don’t know exactly how to proceed, we must spend a great deal of time in prayer. In prayer, we con- sider our options and ask the Lord to show us how to be salt and light in the world. As today’s psalm reminds us, God calls us to be gracious and merciful. Believing firmly that God will always care for us, we trust with steadfast hearts and share with oth- ers—not occasionally, guiltily, or provision- ally, but “lavishly.” Today’s Readings: Is 58:7–10; Ps 112:4–5, 6–7, 8–9; 1 Cor 2:1– 5; Mt 5:13–16 ANNUNCIATION CHURCH "As the father sent me, so I send you." 1307 East Longden Ave., Arcadia CA 91006 Parish Office: 2707 Peck Rd., Monrovia, CA 91016 (626) 447-6202 / Fax (626) 447-9834 Website: AnnunciationChurch.net

Together In Mission Commitment Weekend: This weekend is “Commitment Weekend” for this year’s Together in Mission cam-paign. Today, Archbishop Gomez invites every Catholic to make their commitment to Together in Mission. This year’s theme, “Our Story is Alive” reminds us that our gifts to Together in Mission are an active demonstration of our faith and love for those in our Archdiocese who need our support. You can make your pledge by completing the envelope in the pew, the card you received in the mail at your home and returning it via mail, or online at: ourmissionla.org/give. Your gift helps to en-sure that our Catholic churches and schools remain open in their communities.

Youth Ministry Bake Sale This Weekend: Just in case your Sweet Tooth needs a reminder, our Annual Youth Ministry-sponsored Bake Sale is taking place THIS weekend--Feb. 8th and 9th. A reminder if you pre-ordered a cheesecake—it (or they!) will be available for pickup on Sunday morning between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Palms To Be Used For Ash Wednesday: There is a basket in the vestibule of the church for you to bring and place your palms that were distributed for last year’s Palm Sunday Procession and Mass. These palms will be burned and will be used for this year’s Ash Wednesday litur-gies.

Peace And Justice Ministry Update: We are continuing to feed the homeless at the Lario Park riverbed in Duarte to great success! On all of your behalf, coupled with your prayers, donations, prepa-ration and serving, our Justice and Peace Ministry served another complete, hot meal to 80+ homeless at the San Gabriel Riverbed on Monday, Jan. 27th While we initially began this as a once-a-month program, we now serve them twice a month—on the first and the fourth Sundays (meal preparation) and Mondays (meal service) of each month. The recipients are very grateful for these efforts. Lent is coming, which would be a wonderful time to join in the sacrifice and reward of this way of feeding the hungry. To get involved, please contact Cathlene Wells at: (626) 840-7966.

Adult Confirmation Classes To Be Offered: The Annunciation Religious Education Office is hosting an 8-week Adult Confirma-tion Class every Tuesday, which began last Tuesday, Feb. 4th. Classes begin at 7:00 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. If you have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Holy Communion, you are eligible for these classes and, upon comple-tion, will be included in our Confirmation Mass, scheduled for Saturday, April 27th at 12:00 Noon. For more information, and to find out if there are still openings for additional participants, please call the Religious Education Office at (626) 446-1625.

One-Day Conference Scheduled: Bishop David O’Connell, Fr. Tony Gomez, Pastor of St. Philip the Apostle, and the San Gabriel Region Unbound Ministry Team invite you to “Unbound”, a one-day conference that is a model for healing and deliverance prayer. This event will be held at Holy Angel Hall at St. Philip the Apostle Church, located at 151 S. Hill Ave. in Pasadena on Saturday, Feb. 15th from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Unbound is a ministry of freedom and healing that helps us to release the power of the Gospel into our lives. Did You Know? In the state of California, anyone who has engaged in sexual misconduct with a child under the age of 16 is not allowed to work directly with minors, or to be unaccompanied with minors. This includes volunteer and em-ployee positions. This law helps to create safe environments for our chil-dren in our schools and churches. You can access the names and ad-dresses of registered sex offenders on the Megan’s Law website. To learn more, visit http://protect.la-archdiocese.org.

Chúa Nhật V Thường Niên Năm A

Bài đọc 1 Is 58, 7-10
