This presentation will provide a brief overview of the signs and symptoms of fatigue, outline factors contributing tofatigue and discuss the impact of fatigue on patients, nurse and public safety. Through her work as AssociateProfessor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Dr. Rogers has been the principal investigator of aseminal study on the effects of staff nurse fatigue and patient safety and has published numerous articles on thetopic. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear the results of her research as well as hear presentations on promisingpractices for nursing retention from Tennessee hospitals.

Rick Hoyt uses a wheelchair. That has not stopped him from living a very full and amazing life. He’s competed in theBoston Marathon 26 times, and in Ironman Triathlons six times. He, along with his dad, Dick, have formed “Team Hoyt”and they compete around the world doing marathons and triathlons. The Hoyts have competed in over 980 athleticevents in the last 28 years. Dick, 68, is a retired Lt. Colonel, having served in the military for 37 years. Rick, 46, is agraduate of Boston University with a degree in Special Education. They have appeared on HBO’s “Real Sports withBryant Gumbel,” where their segment recently won a Sports Emmy Award for Best Long Feature. They also travel theworld speaking out about people with disabilities and promoting the Team Hoyt motto, “Yes You Can”. Hear a truly inspi-rational story that is truly positive and uplifting.

Hospital boards increasingly are being held accountable for quality and the safety of the patients in their care. Effectivelyaddressing these concerns requires a greater understanding of the elements of quality care and patient safety, the devel-opment of the board’s quality literacy, and a clearer connection between the actions of leadership and organizational clini-cal excellence. In this session, Jamie Orlikoff, president of Orlikoff & Association Inc. and a senior consultant for theCenter for Healthcare Governance, will address the rationale for governance performance in this critical area.

THA Educational Session - Free3:30pm-5:00pm “Breaking Down Segregation and Disparities in Health Care: A Life andDeath Issue”Presenter: Alvin Poussaint, MD

Few fans realized that the inspiring force behind The Cosby Show and its spin-off, A Different World, was Dr. Alvin Poussaint, a psychiatristknown more for his insightful studies into the needs of the African American family than for his screenwriting talents.Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Poussaint was chosen script consultant for the two NBCseries after his passionate advocacy for more positive black images in American culture came to the attention of theshows’ creators. His influence helped break new ground in the depiction of African Americans on television. Poussaint’sscholarship has kept a finger on the pulse of the black community, diagnosing the symptoms and prescribing the remedyfor almost every social malady affecting African-Americans today.

In this presentation, Dr. Poussaint will speak with candor on the dynamics of prejudice and the necessities of diversity inhealth care.

Charlie Evans, FACHE, is president and CEO, International Health Services group (IHSG), Alpharetta, GA. He servesas the 2008-2009 Chairman-Elect of the American College of Healthcare Executives and served as an ACHE Governorfrom 2004 to 2007. He founded IHSG, a social enterprise to support health services development in underservedareas of the world.

As editor-in-chief of the nation’s premier health care policy journal, Ms. Dentzer will share insight from recent HealthAffairs coverage on health care reform as a Presidential election issue. She will also give perspectives on the likelihoodof reform under a new Administration and the impact on access to care, health care coverage, quality and cost.

Susan Dentzer assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief of Health Affairs, the nation’s leading journal of health policy on May1, 2008 after a decade as the on-air health correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS. Prior to joiningThe NewsHour in 1998, she was chief economics correspondent and economics columnist for U.S. News & WorldReport. She is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations, and serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors of theGlobal Health Council, the worlds largest membership organization of groups involved in global health.

As part of his program, he’ll research the “Rich” participants in attendance andshare their “wealth” with us. A native Floridian, Tim now lives a Rich life in East Tennessee where he is a soccer coach,cub master, and founder and president of a Melanoma Foundation started in memory of his best friend.

THA is authorized to award 13 hours of pre-approvedCategory II (non-ACHE) continuing education credit forthis program toward advancement certification, or reap-pointment in the American College of HealthcareExecutives. Participants in this program wishing tohave the continuing education hours applied towardCategory II credit should list their attendance whenmaking application to the American College ofHealthcare Executives for advancement, certification,or reappointment.

THA has applied to the National Association of Boardof Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators (NAB).Members can earn up to 13 hours of continuing educa-tion credits. Those wishing to apply for NAB creditMUST sign in prior to each of the following programs.

Attendance at all THA programming is required in orderto earn up to 13 hours of credit. Certificates will beemailed.
