Since our most recent Chairman, General John Kelly USMC (Ret) was

asked to serve our Nation as the White House Chief of Staff, we are

currently without a Chairman. As Vice Chairman, I am honored to share

with you our vision for the future of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.

First, I would like to thank you, our supporters, for doing your part to

ensure that the Museum tells the story of every man and woman who

has earned the title “Marine.” 2017 was an exciting year for the Marine

Corps Heritage Foundation as we completed construction of the physical

space needed for the final galleries and opened the Giant Screen Medal

of Honor Theater featuring our signature film, We, The Marines.

We could not have done that without you!

While Final Phase construction is complete, the Foundation’s work

continues. In the months and years ahead, as the Marine Corps continues

to work on the new galleries that will share the history of Marine service

from the end of the Vietnam War to the current day, we are developing

ways to expand our reach. We are striving to reach all Americans – not

just those who are able to physically visit the Museum. We are exploring

new and creative ways to take our Museum on the road and across the

country. In the future we will take Combat Art exhibits to other museums,

universities and galleries across the country for temporary viewing as

well as take the teaching trunks to schools outside Northern Virginia.

Our mission is to preserve and promulgate the history, traditions and

culture of the Marine Corps.

The mission endures!

Thank you again for your continued support; I know we can count on

you in 2018. I look forward to what we will accomplish together.

Page 7: ANNUAL REPORT WINTER 2017 – 18...ensure that the Museum tells the story of every man and woman who has earned the title “Marine.” 2017 was an exciting year for the Marine

In 2017, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation reached

two milestones in the work that has stood at the core of

our mission since the inception of the National Museum

of the Marine Corps. First, it is with a deep and heartfelt

appreciation for our supporters that I announce the

successful completion of the Final Phase of construction

of the Museum. The Museum is a treasure of the Marine

Corps and our Nation. Yet, until it tells the story of every

Marine, it remains unfinished.

Over the last six years, we have issued calls to help

support the completion of the Museum by contributing to

the construction of a new space where we could tell the

stories of Marines who served from 1976 through today.

With a shared commitment to preserve and promulgate

the history, traditions and culture of all Marines, our

supporters answered the call. Thank you for being a

part of this historic effort.

Your generosity allowed the Foundation to break

ground on the Museum’s Final Phase in 2015 and make

steady progress on construction as we raised additional

funds. We were proud to also mark the second key

accomplishment for 2017, the completed construction for

the Museum’s new galleries, which added approximately

114,000 square feet of exhibit and attraction space. The

Marine Corps will now fabricate, install and roll out a

series of new galleries and exhibits over the next few

years. The Museum opened its first gallery last summer

showcasing combat art produced by Marine artists. The

education suite opened this past fall, making it possible

to welcome more young visitors to the Museum and

teach them about our Nation’s history as seen through

the eyes of Marines.

The Foundation opened the new, state-of-the-art Giant

Screen theater. Sponsored by Lockheed Martin, the Medal

of Honor Theater seats 369 visitors and is equipped

with Christie 4K RGB illuminated projectors and a High

Performance Stereo sound system. In less technical terms,

the theater is one of the most advanced in the Nation.

We worked with the Academy Award winning producers,

MacGillivray Freeman Films, to produce the signature

film for the theater, We, The Marines. Sponsored by

The Boeing Company and narrated by Academy Award

winning actor and Marine, Gene Hackman, the film is an

action-filled, often intense journey following Marines

from boot camp, to training, deployment and finally,

homecoming. The Theater runs the film every hour daily,

providing visitors with a glimpse into the Marine Corps

experience.

While construction of the Final Phase of our Museum

is complete, our mission to preserve and promulgate

Marine Corps history is enduring. Global threats will

still require the deterrence and response that only the

Marine Corps can provide. We will continue to experience

natural disasters like those we saw in 2017, which require

the skills of our Marines to bring assistance and relief.

At the same time, the gap between the civilian population

and our military will continue to be significant. And while

we can count on the current and future galleries of our

revered Museum to immerse visitors in the history of the

Marine Corps, the scope of the Foundation’s mission must

extend across the Nation to those who cannot make the

trip to experience all it has to offer.

Thank you for all you have done to make our National

Museum a reality and to support the Foundation’s

programs. I hope we can count on your continue support

in 2018.

GALLERIES

THE COMBAT ART GALLERY

In early July, 100 works by 22 Marines became the focus of

the inaugural show of the beautiful Combat Art Gallery on the

second deck. “Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps

Art, 1975-2015” showcases art created during the 40+ years

that will be the focus of the new historical galleries under

fabrication. The works are intimate, powerful and inclusive.

Some bring tears; others leave you smiling. Water colors, oils,

sketches and sculptures can be found among the three parts of

the show: Every Clime and Place; No Better Friend, No Worse

Enemy; and The Price. Along with the opening of the gallery

has come a revitalization of the combat artist program. A two-

day symposium at the Museum brought artists and curators

together from all the services and identified new talent and

new directions. As I write this article, three artists are busy in

the artist studio near the Combat Art Gallery, creating works

that might be featured there in the years to come.

THE CHILDREN’S GALLERY

Opened this past November, the Children’s Gallery is all about

making history fun for our youngest visitors. Museum educators

and the exhibit team were inspired by the real stuff of history

as they created a pint-sized gallery in which to explore Marine

Corps history. Enter through Tun Tavern—of course! Explore a

WWI trench; go aboard a landing craft; and catch a helicopter

ride. There are books to read, uniforms to try on and educators

to facilitate the adventure. As my first boss told me, “Of course,

there are going to be lots of young children at the Museum.

Marines are proud of what they do and will bring their kids

and grandkids, so you had better get ready.” We are now

more ready than ever!

By Lin EzellDIRECTOR, NATIONAL MUSEUM

“GO TO WAR. DO ART.”

These are the simple instructions

Marine Corps combat artists have been

receiving for decades.

“GO TO THE MUSEUM. SEE ART.”

This is the new guidance we can give

new and returning visitors to the

National Museum of the Marine Corps

(NMMC). After more than five years of

planning and design work, the NMMC

team began building and opening

new features of the Final Phase.

With gallery construction complete and key fabrication contracts awarded

for life-like cast figures, media infrastructure and production, and theatrical

lighting, we can now expect to see exhibitry join the M60 tank and F/A-18

Hornet, which were painstakingly installed in 2016. From the second-

deck overlooks, you can watch our progress in 2018-19. Our goal is to

be substantially complete with the two galleries that take the story from

Beirut to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan before the close of 2019. Already

under roof and waiting in the wings for installation are an M198 howitzer, an

AAVP-7 amphibious vehicle, an MATV, a Humvee and an LAV-25. Restorers

are putting the final touches on a UH-1N Huey that will be featured in a

nighttime refueling and rearming scene with the Battle for An-Nasiriyah

being fought in the background.

COLLLECTIONS

Collections are the soul of any museum and they are the inspiration for

stories told within galleries. For the second consecutive year, our curators

received significant collections that contain objects destined for the new

galleries. And to keep the exhibitions fresh for many years, we plan to

rotate artifacts through many of the cases so there is incentive to continue

aggressively collecting artifacts that relate to more recent Marine Corps

history. Curators, restoration staff and operations team members also

relocated equipment and artifacts to our leased Museum Support Facility

located just one exit north of the Museum.

The restoration staff is up and running in this state-of-the-art shop. Art is

properly stored there with plenty of room to grow. This fall, we emptied

another building on board Marine Corps Base Quantico that had long

outlived its life cycle and could no longer protect the textiles, uniforms,

flags and other precious artifacts that had been stored there; those gems

are now safely in storage at the new facility. Over 2,800 artifacts were

added to the ranks of the collection in 2017, and now we worry less about

their long-term care.

SUPPORT FROMTHE MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation generously supports our education

programs and the past year saw some long-planned new initiatives come to

fruition. A new education trunk, “From Ships to the Shore: Keeping Marines

Afloat,” combines history with Science Technology Engineering and Math

(STEM), incorporating 5th grade standards of learning for science. Getting

a head start on our longer-term strategic goal of sharing our programming

and collections beyond our walls, the educators have assembled the

equipment necessary to support a distance learning program with the

first prototype offering being “broadcast” on the Marine Corps birthday.

Special events kicked off in 2017 and will peak in June 2018 as we observe

the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Belleau Wood.

VISITATION

Visitation surged during 2017, including those who follow us on eight

social media platforms, with more than 480,000 visitors coming through

our physical doors—including VISITOR NUMBER 5 MILLION. Some 41,800

organized student groups and home schoolers toured our galleries in 2017,

we reached another 15,000 in their classrooms throughout the region, and

300 teachers attended workshops at the Museum. We are grateful to all

the new volunteers who have joined our visitor services ranks. Along with

211 docents who contributed nearly 27,000 hours of service, 67 hospitality

ambassadors now help greet visitors at the information desk and provide

assistance throughout the Museum.

The new Hospitality Ambassador program allows volunteers who may not

have the time to commit to the in-depth training required to lead tours

and become subject matter experts to add value to the visitor experience

in another way. To assist in the new art gallery, 61 art docents attended

specialty training so that we have daily support at this new feature; they are

already excited to learn more about the works that will be featured in our

next show which opens in June 2018 as part of the WWI commemorations.

NMMC also proudly supported 264 professional military education visits

during 2017. We shout out an enthusiastic “thank you” to the Marine Corps

Heritage Foundation for their support of the volunteer program. VISITATION TO THE MUSEUM SURGED

Moriah Webster is a second year intern at the Museum and is in her second

year at Virginia Tech’s Material Culture and Public Humanities Master’s

Degree Program. Moriah was busy cataloging over 350 movie posters and

lobby cards in the collection along with helping plan for an exhibit featuring

posters from the collection slated for early 2018. Moriah also wrote object

labels for artifacts to be exhibited in the upcoming Final Phase galleries,

conducted research on collections and prepared acquisition reports for

presentation at the Museum’s Collections Committee meetings.

MORIAH WEBSTER2

Over the summer, Shelley Albee, a Museum Studies graduate student at

George Washington University, interned with our Education Department.

While she was with us, Shelley created a Marine Corps Aviation Discovery

Cart which housed objects to excite and educate Museum visitors. She

also worked with the other education interns to revamp the Children’s

Gallery Guides, focusing the majority of her efforts on the Vietnam

Gallery Guide. As a team, the education interns created the concept for

a Museum manners video for middle school students and created a script

for future production. While Shelley found all the activities in which she

participated educational and exciting, her favorite part of the summer

was helping with the preparation for and assisting in the operation of

the summer camps for grade school children.

SHELLEY ALBEE3

Last summer, Erin Metcalf, a student at the University of South Carolina,

worked as a public affairs intern for 29 hours per week. During that period

she contributed to the Museum’s social media platforms, especially

Snapchat, Instagram and Pinterest. Her efforts significantly increased

NMMC’s visibility on these platforms and helped appeal to a younger

audience. Erin wrote several articles including a news story, a feature

story and a blog, as well as assisted with two very high profile visits at

the Museum. Erin helped guide media during a visit by the President of

South Korea as well as a visit by Second Lady Mrs. Pence. She also acted

as the Museum photographer during Mrs. Pence’s visit and assisted with

the Facebook live broadcast of Mrs. Pence’s remarks.

ERIN METCALF1

ANNA POLANCO4

Interning with the Education Department last summer, Anna Polanco

kept Chesty’s Corner organized, greeted school groups and assisted with

the creation of a World War I replica newspaper. Anna was involved with

many Family Days assisting children with crafts and explaining what the

activities had to do with Marine Corps history. Anna created and finished

a Discovery Rations Cart meant for visitors to learn and understand more

about the topic. Summer camps were also a large part of her internship,

where she would set up and explain the different activities to the children.

She assisted in writing a script for a new Museum manners video.

As an Education Department intern, Emily Murray provided support in all

areas of the department. Emily greeted school groups, gave the students

a brief history of the Marine Corps and reminded them of their expected

behavior, introduced students to Discovery Carts, assisted at summer

camps and helped at our children’s areas. Emily took it upon herself to

learn more about early Marine Corps aviation and communication. Her

primary project while she was here was to create a Discovery Cart based

on communication with secret codes. She researched many different

types of codes, from basic cypher codes to the Enigma and Navajo

Code Talkers.

EMILY MURRAY5

Brandy Sharpe is a graduate of Arizona State University who recently

moved to the Quantico area with her Marine husband. She interned with

the Exhibits Department at the National Museum of the Marine Corps

and performed various tasks directly related to the Final Phase of the

Museum. Some of the tasks included outlining 397 micro artifacts and

verifying the accession numbers for each. She assisted with the installation

of the first Combat Art Gallery exhibit “Honor, Courage, Commitment:

Marine Corps Art, 1975-2015.” Additionally, she helped with the planning

and implementation of the 1st annual multi-service Art Symposium held

at the Museum.

BRANDY SHARPE6

Mary Leonard spent last summer assisting the Combat Art Collection

team. She received basic collections management training to include

cataloging, fulfilling image requests and handling art, as well as acquiring

other important skills necessary when working with the Marine Corps

Combat Art collection. She learned framing techniques relating to their

relationship to a specific work of art and the environment (office, gallery,

etc). She assisted in the art selection for the offices of Marine Corps officials,

such as the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Secretary of Defense and

a U.S. Senator. She assisted the install team for the inaugural exhibition

of the Combat Art Gallery and also assisted the Collections team by

beginning the preliminary research for the upcoming WWI exhibit that

will be featured next in the Combat Art Gallery.

MARY LEONARD7

As one of the Education Departments interns, Madeline Fanta took on

multiple projects last summer. She helped develop a Discovery Cart with

a focus on the history and development of camouflage. In addition, she

worked as an assistant during the five summer camps that took place

at the Museum.

Our new Marine Corps History magazine,

which replaced the old Fortitudine news

bulletin, is a tremendous hit with both

retired and active duty Marines and the

public in general. The new magazine

allows the Division to take a more scholarly

approach toward the study of Marine Corps

history by publishing individually sourced

articles in excess of 4,000 words each.

Every edition seems to be better than the

previous one. Comments from the field

on the quality of the magazine have been

uniformly positive.

The reincorporation of the historical archives

branch with the History Division has also

met with significant success. By co-locating

the reference and archives branches, we

have this highly efficient “one stop shop”

for historical research and patron use of our

collections has really taken off. This has also

resulted in a more professional approach

toward the preservation of personal papers

and other important historical collections

that are donated to the Archives on an

annual basis. For example, just recently, Mrs.

Janet Wilson Taylor, the daughter of General

Louis Wilson, the 26th Commandant of

the Marine Corps, generously donated a

number of boxes of the General’s personal

papers for the “Wilson Collection” in the

Archives branch. This accession will be

a tremendous boon toward the study of

the Wilson-Barrow reform era in Marine

Corps history.

The University of South Carolina

has digitized over 400 Marine

Division now has on hand.

PRESERVING HISTORYTHROUGH FILM

Audiovisual expert Dr. Tom Baughn retired from federal

service in 2017. Because of Dr. Baughn’s efforts, the

History Division’s agreement with the University of

South Carolina (USC) film preservation program to

assist the Division in digitizing our heretofore un-

viewable film collection continues to track quite well.

Thus far, the USC facility has digitized over 400 films

which we now have on hand in viewable form at the

History Division. Recently, thanks to our digitization

efforts, the Division was able to provide a rare digitized

version of a film that depicted Marines preparing for

the Belleau Wood operation in 1918 to the USMC public

affairs office for use in a video being produced to

coincide with the 100th Anniversary of the USMC in

World War I.

16

Last February, the History Division sponsored a conference on the Iwo

Jima flag raising imagery to coincide with the anniversary of the now

famous flag raisings on the island on D+4. This effort was superbly led

by History Division historian, Dr. Breanne Robertson, and the conference

was a smashing success. Dr. Robertson’s efforts will result in a scholarly

publication dedicated to the flag raisings due to be out in print sometime

in 2018. The Histories branch is also on top of a commemorative series

on the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. For example, the year 2018

will mark the 50th anniversary of the historic battles for Khe Sanh and

Hue City. Prolific history author Colonel Dick Camp, USMC (Ret), formerly

of the History Division and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, is

currently producing both monographs for the Division.

Reference branch head, Ms. Annette Amerman, is heading up the effort

to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the USMC in World War I. As

such, she was asked by the U.S. Consulate in the Azores to give a talk

on a little known USMC aviation unit that deployed there in 1917. Ms.

Amerman will also host a WWI conference here at Quantico during the

summer. Her Reference branch continues to be the “go to” place for all

things Marine Corps history. Ably assisted by Ms. Kara Newcomer, the

Reference branch annually answers thousands of requests for information

from the Commandant, members of Congress, and Marine Corps veterans

across the country and around the world.

The Division’s Editing and Design shop has been quite busy as usual and

much thanks should be extended to Senior Editor, Ms. Angela Anderson.

Editing and Design, along with stand-out historian Paul Westermeyer,

are working on a path breaking anthology, “100 Years of Making Marines,

Winning Battles” to coincide with and underscore a year-long series of

lectures to be presented to the faculty and staff of the entire Marine

Corps University. This lecture series was created by the new University

President, BGen William Bowers USMC when he arrived here in July 2017.

The anthology that will accompany the lectures is due to be published

by the History Division in May. There is already a considerable amount

of interest in this book from Marine Corps senior leadership so be on

the lookout for it in the spring. The final lecture in the series will be

presented by General Charles C. Krulak, the 31st Commandant of the

Marine Corps, on April 26th in Warner Hall and will focus on the future

direction of today’s Corps.

Those interested in seeing published History Division material need only

access the USMC History Division’s website at www.history.usmc.mil.

Click on publications. Dr. Fred Allison continues to do great work on

managing the Division’s oral history program. Dr. Allison also edited an

excellent book on Tarawa and Saipan veteran, Major Roy Elrod, USMC via

the Texas A&M Press. He also recently completed editing and evaluating

oral histories on a number of senior Marine Corps leaders and several

former Commandants of the Marine Corps. Dr. Allison led the way in

recently getting the oral history of former Senator and Secretary of the

Navy James Webb – a Navy Cross recipient during the Vietnam War.

on the Vietnam era. Doc did two tours of duty in Vietnam

as a Navy Corpsman and is considered an expert on Marine

Force Recon. Mr. Doug Nash, the Histories branch senior

writer, continues to conduct a variety of widely sought

after professional military education lectures at Marine

Corps Schools and even standing Marine Expeditionary

person for all things related to amphibious warfare.

Dr. James Ginther continues in his role as the branch

head of the Archives. Dr. Ginther’s team has never let me

of a ton of personal papers each and every year. They

also manage the command chronology program for the

Marine Corps and thanks to these efforts we are able to

utilize this material when it comes time to write the official

INTERN SUPPORTBy PAUL WEBERDEPUTY DIRECTOR, HISTORY DIVISION,

GRAY RESEARCH CENTERIntern Samantha Mayo at work in the AVIR

section helping to organize the extensive film

library and prepare for shipping films to the

University of South Carolina. Miss Mayo is a

graduate of Liberty University and attends

graduate school at George Mason University;

she plans to become an archivist.

LtCol Ed Nevgloski USMC (Ret),

McCLellan Fellow, at his desk. Ed is

working on updating 1973’s Progress

and Purpose from the cutoff date

of 1971 through the withdrawal from

Afghanistan in 2014.

Marine Corps History Division benefits

greatly from the outstanding support

provided by the Marine Corps Heritage

Foundation. This support reaches across

several functions, enabling the Division

to better accomplish our mission.

By the close of the year, the Foundation

will have generously funded 3,113 hours

of intern work, 840 hours of fellowship

support and close to 2,000 hours of

digitization support. The intern support

is invaluable and they work across the

entire organization. Work continues to

digitize the internal working files as it

enables branch historians to quickly

consult an electronic file to answer

questions, provide copies or make a

CD to send to patrons. Although the

Division will retain the paper files, it

is easier to e-mail an electronic file

providing better service at less cost

of labor, materials and postage to the

government. The digital files can also

be cross-referenced, making it easier to

rapidly assemble information on closely

related topics. We had two interns this

summer in the Archives helping to sort

through several collections of letters

and properly classify and arrange them

for greater usability.

We continue to solicit interns

through the colleges and universities

with military history programs; this

year we also had applications from

foreign schools to include Belgium

and Luxembourg. Mary Washington

University and Liberty University

are our largest candidate pools due

to the proximity of most of their

students to Quantico.

The Shaw Fellowship Program

changes this year to the McClellan

Fellowship with the goal of increasing

the candidate field; we had several

applicants with one being from

the United Kingdom. Lieutenant

Colonel Ed Nevgloski USMC (Ret)

was eventually selected and has

made a significant contribution to

the writing program. The Fellowship

runs for 6 months. Applications for

2019 are due in fall 2018.

The Master’s Thesis and Doctoral

Dissertation Programs continue

apace, with two full dissertation

applications approved; for the

second year in a row, no Master’s

Thesis applications were received.

Applications for the Master’s Thesis

and Doctoral Dissertation programs

are due in May. The Foundation

support extends to the writing

program and research grants,

generously supporting a wide

variety of work, much of which is

focused on the 50th anniversary

of Marine Corps involvement in

Vietnam and the World War I

Centennial Commemoration.

The Foundation’s substantial

support allows History Division to

better and more completely report

the history of our Corps and make

that history available as a study and

learning resource.

18

In some personal news, and by the time you read this, I will

have retired as the Director, USMC History Division at the

end of the 2017. I have mulled this decision over for the past

year and many, including my spouse, would have preferred

me to stay for a little while longer, but I believe the time is

right. Having served as Director since 2006 I am confident

I am leaving the organization in excellent condition. During

these years, the History Division found renewed purpose here

at Quantico despite having to reside in a temporary trailer

for more than four years and a building erected in 1945 for

another six. The Division made three major physical moves in

11 years and was still able to increase its output and customer

service well beyond what should have been expected. We

were able to establish and rewrite the official Marine Corps

Order 5750.1H so that it reflected the new arrangement of

the old History and Museums Division that formerly resided

in Building 58 in the Navy Yard. We have recently completed

an additional revision to bring the order even more up to date.

The last time the order had been rewritten and staffed was in

1992 when General Simmons was still the Director.

Nonetheless, we have striven over the years to carry on the

legacy of BGen Edwin Simmons and Colonel John Ripley

and our ability to publish new and increasingly scholarly

histories improves year after year. In fact, we have increased

our historical monograph output by over 1,000 percent since

2006. We established the Marine Corps University Press

and created a University Journal that is competitive with

that of the other service War Colleges. We re-branded the

old Fortitude newsletter and created a cutting edge history

magazine that is, in my humble opinion, now the envy of all

the other services. The History Division has, for the past four

years, taught a very successful USMC history “foundations”

course at the Expeditionary Warfare School. There is rarely

a week that goes by that we do not see an interest inquiry

about USMC History coming in from a student at the various

Marine Corps Schools.

During my tenure as Director, I have served eight University

Presidents and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here with

each and every one of them. By far and away I enjoyed the

tenure of MajGen Don Gardner, USMC (Ret) the most. General

Gardner had the privilege to lead the University for five straight

years and his leadership as President and as a Marine was noted

by one and all who worked at MCU during that time. Thanks to

the institutional continuity and his wise stewardship, I consider

his tenure as President a truly “golden era” for the University.

Not only were General Gardner and his staff responsible for

getting the new Simmons and Warner Centers built but they

established a tradition of excellence that is being carried on

by the current President, BGen William Bowers whose “100

Years of Making Marines, Winning Battles” commemoration

has been one of the more exciting initiatives to take place

around MCU in recent years.

In my job as Director of USMC History, I cannot think of a more

fitting capstone for my professional career as both an active

duty Marine officer and later as a civilian Marine. It was truly

a “dream come true” for me and I have considered myself to

have been extraordinarily privileged to be entrusted with the

management of the Marine Corps History program. Ever since

my graduate school days at Georgetown University I had always

hoped to be able to do such a job and when General Gardner

offered me the opportunity to do so in 2006 I literally leapt at

the job offer. While I leave my current position with a degree of

sadness and nostalgia, I should let everyone know that I intend

to remain in the area for a little while longer and will begin

work on a book on the Wilson-Barrow era of Marine Corps

history not long after my official retirement date of 1 January

2018. I also intend to continue to write on USMC History and

hope to write another book on the Archibald Henderson era

of USMC history in the coming years as well. So you will likely

still see me around the halls of the Gray Research Center and

Simmons Hall for some time to come.

Special thanks, as always, is given to the Marine Corps Heritage

Foundation and LtGen Rusty Blackman, USMC (Ret) for his

long standing support of historical research and scholarship

of all things related to Marine Corps history. Due to the Marine

Corps Heritage Foundation, the Division has once again been

able to use interns and research fellows to get our historical

files ready for the digitization process. Digitization of all our

paper records remains our top priority, and while we still have

a long way to go, this year we have made good progress.

Without the Foundation’s consistent partnership, the History

Division could never hope to accomplish all that it has.

SEMPER FIDELIS.

THE MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION HAS

DISCOVERED A KINDRED SPIRIT IN THE UNIVERSITY

OF SOUTH CAROLINA LIBRARIES MOVING IMAGE

RESEARCH COLLECTIONS (MIRC), ONE OF THE

LARGEST AND MOST RESPECTED ACADEMIC FILM

AND VIDEO REPOSITORIES IN THE COUNTRY.

Thanks to a partnership with the Marine Corps University

History Division, MIRC has taken on the task to save and share

the United States Marine Corps’ history in film.

MIRC is now home to the U.S. Marine Corps Film Repository, a

collection of 18,000 films shot largely by Marine Corps combat

photographers. The 16 mm and 35 mm films that are being

transferred from Quantico to the USC campus span most of

the 20th century of Marine Corps history, and include training

films, public relations activities, and footage from World War

II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Otherwise unviewable

due to damage and high temperatures, the History Division

entrusted the films to MIRC for preservation and digitization.

Through this partnership, copies of the digitized films will

be freely available at the History Division and to anyone,

anywhere, through an online archive managed by USC.

The Foundation is supporting the effort to digitize the Marine

Corps film. It is a natural fit with our mission to preserve

and promulgate the history, traditions and culture of the

Marine Corps. Digitizing such a large film collection and

making it accessible online is a tremendous undertaking.

The Foundation is proud to help fund this project to bring

our history to life through moving images.

You can watch the progress unfold by visiting the website

at library.sc.edu/MarineCorps. Films will be loaded on this

website as they are digitized, and anyone can contribute to

our knowledge of the films by submitting information about

people, places and activities in these moving images. The first

batch of films available online feature 1961 recruits training

at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island.

This is an exciting opportunity for Marines to share their

history with friends and family and to enrich this repository

for research and education. The Foundation’s multi-year

commitment to making the Marine Corps films publicly

available is an investment in preserving our history and

sharing our story.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND NEWS

CHILDREN’S GALLERY The Children’s Gallery is a welcoming space for families to explore and learn

Marine Corps history in an interactive and engaging environment. It starts

with the Corps’ birth at Tun Tavern in 1775 and continues to today’s Marine

Corps. The Gallery officially opened this past November with a Family Day

celebration that included face painting, photo booths and commemorative

coins.

HISTORY TRUNK PROGRAMS The National Museum of Marine Corps trunk programs cover Virginia Standards

of Learning curriculum in addition to the history of the United States Marine

Corps for elementary, middle and high school levels. The elementary program

covers aspects of the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras. At the middle

and high school levels there are five different trunk programs covering

the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I, World War II and Cold War

(Korea-Vietnam). This year the Education Department visited over 15,000

students. Trunk program outreach has really grown from our inaugural year

when we visited fewer than 1,000 students during the 2011-12 school year.

Next year we seek to expand our content offerings by introducing our Honor,

Courage and Commitment Trunk program. This program will discuss how the

Marines have changed over time and how students can use examples from

Marine Corps history to display honor, courage and commitment in schools.

STEM TRUNK PROGRAMSOur newest trunk program, From Ships to the Shore: Keeping Marines

Afloat, debuted last year with great success. We have already performed 25

programs at local schools and we will also expand our Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) offerings this year. Ships to Shore

explores the beginning of the Marine Corps and life on a ship with a STEM

focus. Students explore the density of objects and fluids through hands-on

science demonstrations and construct a sea-worthy, load-bearing ship from

construction paper. The next program will explore military communication

and students will build their own Morse code signaler.

2017 WAS A VERY EXCITING

YEAR FOR THE EDUCATION

DEPARTMENT AT THE

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE

MARINE CORPS.

We opened two state-of-the-art classrooms, a student activity room and the Children’s Gallery. With these new spaces, the department is working harder than ever, both at the Museum and on the road, to expand students’ knowledge of Marine Corps history. Whether greeting a school bus at the Museum or conducting a trunk program at a school, we take pride in our important work with students.

The following is an update and year in review on the Education Department’s programs.

DISTANCE LEARNING STUDIOAs we opened our new education spaces, we also made

way for the launch of our new distance learning initiative.

This initiative will be a solution for both local and out of

state teachers who want to book a trunk program but

don’t have the capability to host one at their school. With

our new distance learning technology, teachers can book

a virtual trunk program that can be broadcasted live or

downloaded remotely for ultimate classroom flexibility.

This will also be a supplementary public program option

for community based groups who are unable to visit the

Museum, such as adult living communities and special

needs groups. The program will cover the same topics

as our traveling trunk programs and we are now taking

reservations for 2018.

FAMILY DAYSOur 2017 Family Days were again a great success and

brought over 9,000 visitors to the Museum. With our new

classroom space, Family Day programs are even more

engaging for a variety of ages. During our Art Family Day

in October, families could try creating their own works

in our new classroom space and then head upstairs to

the Combat Art Gallery to meet with a combat artist.

Our biggest events continue to be our Halloween Party

and Santa visits, which both attract over 1,000 visitors

for holiday fun.

PRE-SCHOOL PLAYDATEWe expanded our family programming in 2017 to include

pre-school playdates for families with infants and toddlers.

Children can hear stories read aloud, play in designated

fun zones and make seasonal crafts. Over 200 families

participated this year and we look to expand our number

of playdates in 2018.

CONCERTO COMPETITIONThe 2017 Concerto Competition hosted by “The President’s

Own” United States Marine Band and the Marine Corps

Heritage Foundation awarded Shawn Zheng, a French

horn player from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, first place.

Shawn received a $2,500 scholarship from the Marine

Corps Heritage Foundation and appeared as a guest soloist

with the U.S. Marine Band last spring in Washington D.C.

SUMMER CAMPThis year we once again expanded our

summer camp offerings that covered

topics from engineering to American Girl

dolls. Campers aged 7-11 enjoyed making

egg drop parachutes, straw rockets and

endless crafts throughout their time

in camp. Summer camp sessions are

four days long and are free of charge.

Registration information for 2018 summer

camps will be available in the Spring.

GEOGRAPHY DAYGeography Day 2017 was a huge success

with over 800 students participating.

We continue to have amazing partners

including the Library of Congress, USGS

and the National Park Service that offer

engaging and informative activities for

students. We also had an orienteering

challenge in our Semper Fidelis Memorial

Park and a special WWI map guide to kick

off our WWI Commemorative activities.

In 2018, we will combine Geography Day

with our Belleau Wood Commemorative

event to focus on the importance of maps

in WWI.

HISTORY DAYThe Marine Corps Heritage Foundation

and National Museum of the Marine

Corps continued its sponsorship of the

Region 5 History Day and National History

Day competitions in 2017. There was

good participation of student projects

with Marine Corps themes connected

to the History Day theme of “Taking a

Stand in History.” Prince William County

students, Katie Fitzgerald and Bonnie

Lewis (pictured right), won the Region

5 History Day award for their combined

efforts on a puppet show featuring the

earliest female Marines. While Annalise

Callaghan of Northland Pines High School,

WI, won the National History Day award

for USMC History for her performance

“Vietnam: A Stand with Marines; A Stand

for the Vietnamese People; A Stand for

the Truth.”

TEACHER IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The National Museum of the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation have sponsored the Teacher in Residence (TIR) program for the past nine years. The Teacher in Residence program allows selected teachers from Prince William County, Virginia, the opportunity to develop ways to teach the rich history and heritage of the United States Marine Corps and introduce the National Museum of the Marine Corps to teachers and students from across the country. The TIR brings to the Museum’s Education Department the bridge to classroom teachers.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMThis one day program reaches students who are seeking

assistance as they assume leadership roles in their schools and

prepare for college. Participants in this program, both students

and their chaperones, have raved about the experience and we

are now seeing repeat participation from groups in the region.

EDUCATOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAMPermits principals, teachers, college counselors and

administrators to contact the Museum for assistance in creating

a program that will use Marine Corps history to boost morale

and find focus to their school year. Last year, more than 200

educators learned Marine Corps Leadership Traits with examples

from Museum exhibits and Semper Fidelis Memorial Park. This

is a great way for the Museum to connect with local teachers

and the school community.

PWCS TEACHER MENTORSHIP PROGRAMAs a liaison for Prince William County Schools the Teacher in

Residence continues to support the county with creating new

curriculum. This year the TIR also helped pilot a new coaching

program to show teachers how they can improve literacy and

critical thinking skills in their Social Studies classes. By merging

Marine Corps history with Virginia Standards of Learning the

Museum continues to be a significant resource for local teachers.

TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS We continued to diversify our support to Professional

Development by offering a variety of teacher workshops. In

August, the Education Department hosted a session titled

‘Commemorating WWI in your Classroom.’ This workshop

introduced the Museum’s new WWI lessons and activities for

middle and high school students. Teachers interacted with

the new material and discussed ways it could be used in their

classroom. They also received class sets of our WWI newspapers

which can be used for a variety of activities. In October, the

Museum hosted the Medal of Honor Foundation for a character

development workshop. Sixty teachers learned how to use the

stories of Medal of Honor recipients to encourage students to

have positive behavior in the classroom and in the community.

Teachers received a packet of resources and a flash drive with

additional videos and activities to use in their classroom.

ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY DAY The TIR and Education Department members presented our

Trunk program offerings to over 100 elementary and secondary

school teachers as part of their back to school info sessions.

Teachers loved seeing the programs in action and enjoyed

hearing about other educational resources the Museum has to

offer. We have already seen a significant increase in requests

and we look forward to visiting more schools than ever in 2018!

By MCHF STAFF

In addition to honoring twenty-three award recipients from across the Nation for

their outstanding portrayal of Marine Corps history and service in compelling works

of art and literature, the Foundation was very pleased to honor former President

George H. W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush with the Lieutenant General

John A. Lejeune Recognition for Exemplary Leadership and General Walter E.

Boomer USMC (Ret), with the Heritage Award.

The John A. Lejeune Recognition for

Exemplary Leadership is bestowed each

year on someone who has demonstrated

leadership in their chosen profession, or

appointed or elected position, that is clearly

exemplary and worthy of emulation. The

recipient must epitomize the core values

of Honor, Courage and Commitment and

practice the leadership traits and principles

ascribed to by the United State Marine Corps.

President Bush has demonstrated a lifetime of leadership and support of those in

the U.S. military, from his own time as a highly decorated World War II Navy pilot

to serving as Commander-in-Chief during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. While

in the White House, President and Mrs. Bush were known for their admiration

and respect for the men and women of the U.S. military. Their abiding care and

compassion for those who serve continues to this day.

MAKE A GIFT TODAY

If you, like Kevin, have

already made a gift to the

MCHF from your will or trust

but haven’t notified us, or,

if you are considering

doing so, please contact

Gayle Union,

(703) 586-7463, or

[email protected].

THANK YOU!

STAFF SERGEANT KEVIN GREWE IS A 1775

SOCIETY MEMBER (AN HONORARY RECOGNITION

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DESIGNATED A GIFT

FROM THEIR ESTATE TO THE MARINE CORPS

HERITAGE FOUNDATION), BUT THE FOUNDATION

OF HIS DEEP RESPECT FOR THE MARINE CORPS

WAS LAID MANY YEARS BEFORE THAT.

Kevin watched Marines on TV as a young boy and admired not only how

they performed as one unit, but also the discipline, leadership, respect and

brotherhood that he saw exhibited by the Marines. He knew, then, that he

wanted to serve in the best military branch – the United States Marine Corps.

When he enlisted at age 17, he found the support and camaraderie he sought

and that stuck with Kevin to this day. “If I hadn’t enlisted in the Marine Corps, I

don’t know where I’d be today. It is still an honor to have served in the Marine

Corps, and the feeling of being a Marine has never left me.” Like all Marines,

he doesn’t consider himself a former Marine, but rather always a Marine, and

acts with the best intention of the Marine Corps in mind.

Kevin designated part of his estate to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation,

saying, “I owe the Marine Corps so much, and I just want to help keep the

legacy of all Marines alive at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. I want

to keep the education programs going so that young people are inspired by

the roles Marines played in the history of our Nation.” Kevin has visited many

military museums, and especially appreciates the way the National Museum of

the Marine Corps is organized as well as its authenticity. In addition to being

a 1775 Society member, he is proud to be a Friend of the National Museum of

the Marine Corps.

Are you like Kevin? If you have already named the Marine Corps Heritage

Foundation in your will or other plans and have yet to notify the Foundation,

or if you’re thinking about making a gift, please let us know. “It was very easy,”

said Kevin. “I contacted the Foundation to get the information I needed for my

advisor, and now I know that my wish will be honored.”

“I owe the Marine Corps so much, and I just want to help keep the legacy of all Marines alive at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.”

STAFF SERGEANT KEVIN GREWE, USMC
