Our History...

Our Mission...

Alta Mira is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that was incorporated in 1985 following the consolidation of two predecessor agencies, Albuquerque Special Preschool and Esperanza Para Nuestros Ninos. Both of these agencies were founded in 1968 by parents of children with developmental risks, delays or disabilities, to develop quality services within the community.

Since 1985 Alta Mira has continued the work of these organizations. As the knowledge base for supporting families has changed over the past 20 years so has Alta Mira. However, we continue to maintain the core values on which we were founded - client care and respect for families as experts.

Alta Mira Specialized Family Services is a nonprofit organization that serves people of all ages with developmental risks, delays or disabilities throughout their lives.

• We believe that these issues affect not only the person, but the family and the community, too.

• We respect the family as the expert — empowering, validating and encouraging familymembers to be confident advocates.

• We promote inclusion for the people we serve in every aspect of life.• We work closely with individuals and their families to help them strengthen basic life skills,

achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

2014 was a year of growth for Alta Mira. While we served a smaller number of families, our programs expanded. We began a respite program for personnel at Kirtland Air Force Base. We began the planning for a child care center in Estancia. We worked with several new departments in state government. Our employee numbers increased, not only in number but in qualifications. We hired two speech language pathologists, an occupational therapist, and a physical therapist. The requirements for the programs that we offer have continually increased in an attempt to raise the quality of services available to our fellow citizens. We participated in a five agency collaborative in early childhood that was partially funded by the United Way of Central New Mexico. It has been a remarkable turn of events. As the pressures of increased training, reduced reimbursements, more paperwork, and increased expenses, i.e. health insurance, utilities, etc. have become realities, the passion and caring of the staff at Alta Mira have increased as well.

We look forward to a productive 2015 where we will continue to provide everyone a chance to fly.

Thanks for your continued support. Jim Copeland

Executive Director

As another year comes to an end, it is important to look back on the past twelve months. We are thankful for the continued exemplary services provided to families and clients by this very caring staff. The planning and implementation of a child care facility in Estancia and changes to the physical plant on Carlisle with the addition of cost saving solar panels have been beneficial to our agency. It is also important to express appreciation to all who help spread the word about Alta Mira. The Kite Fest is expanding by leaps and bounds and is beginning to gain national recognition. Members of the Board of Directors and staff members continue to make presentations about who we are. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our families, our dedicated staff, our diligent board members, and our many generous donors and funders. Without all these people, Alta Mira would not be the agency that it is today.

Thank you, one and all.

Alta Mira receives funding from the New Mexico Department of Health through the Developmental Disabilities Waiver, State General Funds, and the Family Infant Toddler Program. This year we received a $60,000 grant from United Way of Central New Mexico. The Family Support Services program is contracted with Childcare Aware of America to provide respite services to the families of Kirtland Air Force Base. The Carl C. Anderson Sr. and Marie Jo Anderson Charitable foundation provided support to our fundraising efforts this past year granting a $20,000 match.

we are able to provide services to a wide population in this diverse state of New Mexico. Documents are translated into Spanish and translators in other languages are often called upon to facilitate services. Even in the most rural regions, families receive services in their homes or day care facilities.

At Alta Mira we value the uniqueness of each individual and the family he or she is a part of. Our focus is to support natural integration of an individual’s daily life into that of their family and community. Everyday individuals and families are faced with challenges, large and small. Our staff members have the skills, the resources, and the passion to assist in facing these challenges; but also the knowledge that the individual and his or her family and their support system, know best what will work for them.

Community PartnershipsAlta Mira Specialized Family Services proudly connects with “community” at all levels. We create “win-win” alliances with the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce, Carrie Tingley Hospital, Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque Job Corps, Anderson Foundation, The Green Chamber, United Way, ACE Charter School and the University of New Mexico. We learn that more is accomplished working together and that embracing those in need of a little extra guidance results in a better community.

One example of how we build relationships and provide experiences for the benefit of a better community is our partnership with the Albuquerque Job Corps:

The Albuquerque Job Corps assists students in learning the skills needed to succeed in today’s workforce. Recently Alta Mira and Albuquerque Job Corps joined forces in a “win-win” alliance to teach the Job Corps students facility maintenance practices while assisting the Alta Mira Early Learning Center with landscaping. When complete, Alta Mira Early Learning Center in Estancia will have a beautifully landscaped location and the students will have learned the importance of positive change through community service and firsthand what it takes to improve a site.
