March Madness Drama Thrills PortlandNCAA Tournament returns to the Rose City for the second time in three years

In March, Portland served as one of the most exciting destinations on the road to the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. The Rose Garden hosted a total of six NCAA Tournament games, including VCU’s dramatic second round upset of Wichita State and two thrilling third round games that weren’t decided until the final buzzer sounded. When it did, Indiana and Louisville joined thousands of alumni and fans to celebrate their place in the Sweet Sixteen, with Louisville’s squad ultimately advancing to the Final Four. Portland’s attendance ranked 3rd among the eight sites for second- and third-round games. The Oregon

Sports Authority, in partnership with University of Oregon, Rose Garden and Travel Portland, was proud to host the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, along with all the excitement and economic impact that came with it!

Pro Baseball, New Stadium, Coming to HillsboroBallpark to serve as home for Single-A team

With the support and advocacy of the Oregon Sports Authority, the Hillsboro City Council voted unanimously to build a new minor league baseball stadium, which will bring professional baseball back to the region beginning next summer. The 4,500-seat single-a baseball stadium will be constructed within

the existing Gordon Faber Recreation Complex near Highway 26. Not only will the new stadium be home to the soon to be renamed Yakima Bears of the Northwest League, it will serve as a premier multi-use venue available for many local, regional and national sports events.

Summer of Sport CampaignBoosts All of OregonCommunities throughout the state receiveOregon Sports Authority support

This summer the Oregon Sports Authority conducted an extensive outreach effort to support and promote a variety of sporting events throughout the state. “Oregon’s Summer of Sport” campaign had a dramatic effect on events like the Seaside Beach Soccer Tournament, XTERRA La Grande Offroad Triathlon, Pistol River Wave Bash windsurfing in Gold Beach, Tour de Outback cycling tour in Lake County, Sand Master Jam sandboarding on the dunes in Florence, Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon in Yamhill County, U.S. Windsurfing National

Championships in Hood River and the Rogue Run Half Marathon in Medford. This statewide campaign was borne out of the success of the Oregon Sports Authority’s Central Oregon chapter, which has been a key catalyst for economic impact in the Bend area. The Oregon Sports Authority committed significant resources to the statewide effort, generating media visibility, spectator attendance and additional participants. The end result was especially gratifying as increased tourism dollars flowed into communities around the state that are in real need of an economic boost.

Page 9: ANNUAL REPORT - Oregon Sports Authority

Beyond our summer campaign, there have been several other positive statewide developments of note. In April, more than 1,000 of the top BMX racers in the country, ranging in age from two to 70, competed at the USA BMX Great Northwest Nationals for the fifth consecutive year in Redmond. In late June, the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene electrified the entire state, starting with a boisterous hammer throw competition at the Nike campus. In Eugene, the trials

quickly captured the attention of the entire sports nation as Oregon native Ashton Eaton sprinted to the finish in the 1,500 meter run, breaking the decathlon world record while being carried to victory by a frenetic Hayward Field crowd. Looking forward, Bend is again hosting two USA Cycling national championships in September while the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic is set to return to Lincoln City this winter, drawing top big wave surfers from around the globe to the Oregon coast.

We were able to make this event even more attractive to participants thanks tosupport from the Oregon Sports Authority.“ ” - Sam Bittner, Tournament Director

Revolution3 Triathlon Races into the GorgePro and amateur triathletes conquer “most epic bike course ever”

World-class triathletes traveled to Oregon in July to compete in the nationally acclaimed Revolution3 Triathlon for a 70.3-mile test of character and endurance unlike any other triathlon in the nation. Blue Lake Park served as an ideal start/finish area, perfect for spectators and supporting families, while the new bike course curved through stunning scenery at the west end of the Columbia River Gorge. Amateurs from the Northwest and beyond joined the pros to test their physical limits in the water, on the bike, and lastly, on a half-marathon run.

USA FencingNorth American Cup Visits Portland

More than 1,000 Olympic and Junior World Team fencing hopefuls came to Portland to compete in USA Fencing’s January North American Cup at the Oregon Convention Center. The North American Cup is a selection event for teams that competed at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, as well as the Junior and Cadet World Championships in Moscow. The Oregon Sports Authority and Travel Portland proudly hosted this prestigious USA Fencing event.

Top fencers compete for spots in 2012 Olympics

About Fencing:

The first real fencing techniques were developed around 1471 A.D.

With the end of WWI, dueling saw a decline, but the sport continued to grow.

Many of the best fencing coaches in the world live in Oregon, making the state a magnet for serious fencing contenders who train year round.

Olympic Champion, Mariel Zagunis, ranked #1 in the world, hails from Portland.

Congratulations to Oregon’s Olympians!Oregonian Ashton Eaton winsGold in the decathlon

The 2012 Olympic Games represented Oregon’s most prominent presence ever on the Olympic stage. The Oregonian identified 46 Olympians with ties to Oregon, many of whom played starring roles in London. Beaverton native and Olympic fencing champion Mariel Zagunis proudly led Team USA into the stadium during the Opening Ceremony, while Bend native and University of Oregon grad Ashton Eaton emphatically claimed the title of the “world’s greatest athlete” by earning Gold in

the decathlon. Portland native Galen Rupp and his training partner Mo Farah of Great Britain electrified the Games with a thrilling sprint to the finish in the 10,000-meter run. Farah earned Gold while Rupp captured the Silver just a half-second behind, becoming only the third American to medal in the event in 100 years. We congratulate all of our Olympians and salute their achievements toward building Oregon’s reputation as a home to the best in sport.

U.S Women’s Soccer Team Shines in Portland

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team visited Portland last fall, providing fans a chance to join Abby Wambach, Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe and their teammates in celebrating the team’s remarkable run during the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Oregon Sports Authority, along with Nike, City Commissioner

Healthy Youth Oregon®

Healthy Youth Oregon is the signature grant program of the Oregon Sports Authority Foundation. HYO, as we like to call it, addresses the need for physical activity opportunities for Oregon’s youth. An HYO grant is typically $10,000 and is awarded to create or fund a school program that provides physical activity opportunities for as many youth as possible. Along with funds, the Oregon Sports Authority Foundation provides monitoring and evaluation expertise to ensure that each program maximizes the efficiency of health improvement for each dollar invested in deserving youth.

Intramural activities at Franklin High

Gymnastics, co-ed soccer and running at Marysville Elementary School

Playworks at Grout Elementary

Basketball and badminton at three David Douglas Middle Schools

Students participated in yoga, dance, weight lifting and other activities during lunch and after school. The majority of students who took part had not previously participated in organized school sports.

The youngest students participated in gymnastics while older students played co-ed soccer. Seventy-eight percent of kids said that these activities at school made them want to be more active at home.

A Playworks coach organized physical activities and after school sports leagues. There was a dramatic decrease in discipline referrals, and an increase in participation in sports by all students, particularly minorities and girls.

For two hours after school, students had the opportunity to safely participate in basketball and badminton and get a snack. There were more than 200 kids participating per week, including a group of students with disabilities.
