Thank You for Your SupportWith the formation of Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) on March 1, 2019, BID–Plymouth joined an exceptional array of clinical organizations, including world-renowned teaching and specialty hospitals. We are now part of a system that includes over 35,000 employees, 9,000 nurses, and 850 primary care physicians, with a mission of delivering the right care, at the right time, in the right place. We are committed to expanding access to superior health care services, alleviating health care disparities, and addressing public health issues like addiction, mental health and chronic disease.

What’s most important is not the numbers, however, but what access to this breadth and depth of expertise means to our local community and the patients we serve. At BID–Plymouth, we place the experience of our patients at the center of everything we do, and we are committed to providing a full continuum of health care services to the communities of southeastern Massachusetts.

We are truly grateful for your support in fulfilling this commitment. We invite you to visit bidplymouth-giving.org for additional stories that highlight our talented and caring professionals’ work, and that underscore the critical role that your philanthropic support plays in helping us to meet the needs of our community.

Sincerely,

Kevin Coughlin President

BID–Plymouth was founded on a gift from Eben Jordan in 1901, and the impact of philanthropy has only grown over the years. In 2019, individuals from across the South Shore and the Cape—grateful patients who want to show their thanks; business leaders supporting our new Leadership Circle; high school teammates raising money for the Breast Center; and family members honoring a special caregiver—have made a difference at BID–Plymouth through philanthropy. The extensive support from BID–Plymouth donors is reflected in this annual report on giving.

As a member of Beth Israel Lahey Health, BID–Plymouth offers our patients access to a full range of top quality, world class healthcare. Still, 100% of the donations to the Hospital remain here to support its work in our community.

The tradition of giving is a part of who we are as a non-profit organization. We are a community hospital, and at our core, our community is what defines us, what makes us great, and what supports and propels us as we grow. Philanthropy enables us to invest in services and facilities to best serve our patients. We are grateful for your help in optimizing the health and well-being of our community.

With gratitude,

Charles Hewitt III Philanthropy Committee Chair

Three years ago, Tina was rushed to the BID–Plymouth Emergency Department (E.D.) after collapsing at home following what she thought was a bad migraine. Her life changed in an instant when she learned it was actually a brain aneurysm, and that she would need to be transferred to BIDMC for what turned out be weeks in intensive care. Her BID–Plymouth E.D. nurse, Julie, was there for her every step of the way—keeping her alive.

Fast forward three years to May 2019, and Julie’s work day in the E.D. started on an unusual note when she was surprised by a large group of smiling people waiting for her. Julie stood in stunned silence as a staff member read through an emotional testimonial from Tina.

Julie received a second surprise when Tina herself emerged from the crowd to give her former nurse a tearful hug and present her with a certificate and pin that marks her as an honored caregiver. Our honored caregiver program enables patients to make a gift to the Hospital in recognition of the outstanding care they received from an employee or volunteer.

Tina credits Julie with saving her life, saying, “If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be here.”

Faces of BID–Plymouth: David Kelly, M.D.

Honoring Maureen A. Tomaso-Stares

Dr. David Kelly, BID–Plymouth Board member and radiologist, has been a member of the Diagnostic Imaging team at BID–Plymouth since 2006. Helping ensure the community where he lives and works is healthy is very important to Dr. Kelly. When asked why, he quotes Thomas Jefferson, the founder of the University of Virginia where Dr. Kelly earned his M.D., “Without health, there is no happiness.”

Outside work, Dr. Kelly stays healthy and active year-round by sailing in the summer, skiing in the winter, and golfing in the spring and fall. He even finds time to play in BID–Plymouth’s annual Golf Classic with physician colleagues.

Dr. Kelly and his wife, Michelle, have been generous donors to the Hospital since 2007, directing their support for hospice care, behavioral health, and the Hospital’s greatest need.

3

“Many people don’t realize BID–Plymouth is a non-profit. Without philanthropic support from those we serve, there are many programs and services the hospital could not provide.” - Dr. Kelly.

The generous spirit of Maureen A. Tomaso-Stares lives on through an extraordinary bequest to BID–Plymouth. Ms. Tomaso-Stares, a Plymouth resident who passed away in 2017, directed her $730,000 donation to benefit the Hospital’s cancer center, where she was a patient.

To honor Maureen and recognize her exceptional gift, more than 50 family members, friends, and BID–Plymouth employees gathered in BID–Plymouth's cancer center on August 5, 2019 for the dedication of the Maureen A. Tomaso-Stares Waiting Room. Guests shared memories of Maureen during the evening reception and heard from several speakers, including Dr. Matt Koomey, Medical Director of the cancer center, and William B. Stares, Maureen’s husband.

Remarking on the impact of the donation, Kevin Coughlin, President of BID–Plymouth, stated, “Maureen’s generous donation for our cancer center will allow us to add two new treatment rooms, update one of our infusion rooms, and improve the waiting room experience for other patients and loved ones. Maureen leaves a legacy of kindness and generosity through her gift of care and comfort for others. For that we are truly grateful.”

Planning is underway for the cancer center’s expansion and renovation.

Grateful Patient

Pat SullivanPat first experienced the compassionate care of our community hospital when her five-year-old son broke his arm. She was comforted by the expertise and kindness of Dr. Scott Oliver. A few years later, Pat started experiencing knee troubles and reached out to Dr. Oliver for help. When her husband required medical attention to address his foot pain, it was Dr. Oliver they turned to. Then when Pat’s hip started causing her concern, she again requested the expert care of Dr. Oliver.

Pat feels fortunate to have been able to develop such a familiar relationship with her local doctor and receive such excellent care for her entire family, close to home. To show her appreciation, Pat made a gift to the Hospital in honor of Dr. Oliver through the Honored Caregiver program.

33rd Annual Golf Classic

BID–Plymouth hosted its 33rd annual Golf Classic on Tuesday, September 24th at The Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth. This year, the tournament was expanded from one course to two courses, with 180 golfers and over 40 sponsors who helped to raise a record of $225,000, including funds to support Substance Use Disorder (SUD) programs at BID–Plymouth. To learn more about the Hospital’s efforts on SUDs treatment and recovery, please go to bidplymouth-giving.org to watch a brief video. For any questions about the Golf Classic, or if you would like to sponsor, play or volunteer in 2020, please contact Kristen Sarkarati, Corporate Relations and Communications Manager at [email protected] or 508-830-2465.

“The Cranberry Hospice team’s support of my mother, Lee, and best friend, Carrie, was crucial during their end-of-life battles. I am greatly comforted that neither was alone when they passed.”

“Fragile Footprints has been there for our family in both good and bad times. They organize events, such as trips to the zoo and outings to Fenway Park, which create lasting family memories. They offer opportunities like expressive therapy where Austin learns art and music. They also provide us with support and empathy when we most need it. The people of Fragile Footprints care deeply about Austin and our entire family. They offer a crucial support system that is only a phone call away.”

Running for a Reason

This year, Julie Lynch (right) and Caroline Sheehan (left) ran the 2019 Boston Marathon on behalf of BID–Plymouth. Despite the crazy weather on Marathon Monday, both runners persisted and crossed the finish line in under 5.5 hours!

In addition to many months of rigorous physical training, Caroline and Julie raised more than $19,000 for BID–Plymouth’s Behavioral Health department!
