CCDA 2008 ANNUAL REPORT INSPIRE TRAIN CONNECT Dear Members and Friends of CCDA: 2008 has been a year of tremendous CHANGE! An African-American was elected President of the USA—an historical event—and our nation will never be the same! Of great importance to CCDA is the increasing number of individuals and communities that are being affected by the economic downturn. Too many men, women, and children are lacking adequate health care, living-wage jobs and housing. Violence is on the increase again in many communities, and the forces of gentrification and globalization are negatively impacting our neighborhoods. Too many of our young people are unprepared educationally to compete in today’s economic reality. And sadly, it seems that the Church’s impact and message is irrelevant in many sectors of our society. CHANGE is desperately needed! For the last 20 years, members of our association have been championing the cause of the most vulnerable in our society—living among the poor, loving and serving the orphan and the widow, befriending the foreigner and stranger, and empowering them to grow in their love for God and to take responsibility for their lives and communities. The driving passion of CCDA is to see a vibrant expression of Christian community development lived out by committed followers of Christ—in every neighborhood, city, state and corner of our nation—and our world, through our international partners. With your support, CCDA is committed to inspiring, training and connecting our members to more effectively bring about this transformation. INSPIRETRAIN CONNECT

Dear Members and Friends of CCDA:

2008 has been a year of tremendous CHANGE!

GOOd TAlkDialogues, Symposia, and formal Networking sessions were three new options that supplemented our usual Workshop offerings this year. Younger Leaders made their voices heard, discussing the issues our “middle generation” of CCD leadership face. Specific Dialogues were also held by and for women leaders as well as black and Latino leaders. Symposia attendees discussed the important issues of immigration, reconciliation, and the multi-ethnic church, in several three-hour intensives.

THE RESTORER, REMIXEd

Another first in 2008 was the publication of The Restorer magazine in full-color. It will annually chronicle CCD work around the country and the world.

wEb RESOuRCES

A key strategic priority for our association in 2009 is to focus on providing outstanding online resources and information related to CCD that will inspire you, provide you with practical training resources, and easily connect you to other CCDA members around the nation. Online communications will play an important role in helping us achieve our vision and mission. To this end:

• The CCDA website will be revamped and redesigned to serve organizational and individual members more efficiently and offer more practical online tools.

• The eRestorer journal will continue to offer insightful articles and will now include practical helps for CCD practitioners.

• Members will enjoy a new online periodical that will offer best practices, quick tips and monthly insider updates from the executive director.

looking t0 2009As we move forward, our mandate as an association is absolutely clear–to INSPIRE, TRAIN, and CONNECT current and potential CCDA members seeking to bear witness to the Kingdom of God in under-resourced neighborhoods throughout our nation and world. All that we do as an association in the coming year will be measured against those priorities. In 2009, we will:

• Offer another international CCDA Institute to be held in Vancouver, Canada, along with Grand Rapids, San Antonio and other U.S. cities. We will also identify and develop more instructors to grow the Institute’s reach.

• Hire a Membership Director who will handle all aspects of this vital area including recruitment, renewals and benefit administration.

• Increase our effort to make CCDA more visible and relevant in the Latino, African-American, Asian and Native-American communities through targeted marketing and relationship-building.

• Focus on developing the CCDA leaders of the future through a new Emerging Leaders Initiative. During this pilot year, 20 director-level men and women under 40 will be trained in the history and philosophy of CCD.

• Build on our start in Miami by hosting 200 student leaders (ages 16-21) at our second National Student Leadership Intensive in Cincinnati, October 22–25, 2009. Plan now for your student leaders to be there!

Dialogues, Networking and Symposia provided new opportunities for good talk in Miami.

STudENT INTENSIvEFor the first time we were joined by our youth leaders who were at the conference attending the inaugural National Student Leadership Intensive (NSLI). This was a simultaneous, conference-within-a-conference for our 16-21-year-olds to catch the vision of Christian community development in their own way. NSLI staff included instructors Dr. Rene Rochester, who led daily Bible studies with the students; and Lina Thompson and Tali Hairston who taught key CCD principles. World Vision is helping us conduct a thorough, student-led evaluation of this first NSLI effort.

CCdA INSTITuTE

10 Cities hosted one-and-two-day CCDA Institutes this year, and more than 600 attendees were taught the philosophy of Christian community development. These short but intensive course offerings include eight classes covering the core fundamentals as well as elective courses in specific areas of ministry. CCDA leadership along with seasoned practitioners taught institutes in: California (two cities), Colorado, Florida (two cities), Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina and Texas, with another one planned for Minnesota this December. The CCDA Institute, directed by Juanita Irizarry, also:

• Hosted its first international Institute in Toronto, Canada. 300 participants

• Co-hosted a successful “Let Justice Roll” one-day mini-conference in Chicago with Park Community Church. 393 participants

• Conducted two bilingual Institutes for the first time (English-Spanish), in Chicago and Waco, Texas.

CCDA in 2008

CONfERENCE 2000 attendees from New York to New Zealand to Nigeria turned out for our annual conference in Miami to discover how to bring Christ’s “shalom” back to their underserved communities! At the start of conference week, the city was abuzz—one of President-elect Obama’s final campaign stops was held just blocks away from the Miami Hyatt. Inside, conference attendees could feel that change was in the air.

Hopelessness within my community is a large problem, so the greatest challenge would be to restore hope in the young people. It won’t happen

overnight. I believe it is similar to God’s relationship with us…we are not always receptive or accepting of his vision for us, but He never gives up.”

INTERNATIONAlS

There are a growing number of internationals who share the vision of transforming their poor communities for Christ and desire to link arms with us. Many who traveled numerous hours to attend the conference this year were treated to an intimate time of good food, personal sharing and impartation with founder, Dr. John Perkins. Plans for the future include: better assessing and administrating the needs of internationals who desire to attend the conference, maximizing their time while with us, and working to develop strategic partnerships.

After my time learning here with CCdA, the most valuable lesson has been understanding the importance of networking among believers.

My first task will be to gather my team back home and train them. Next, I want to establish dialogue between the local churches so we can share with each other, encourage each other, and equip each other with the necessary tools. I believe that what God desires is for the church to function as one voice.”

The childcare at the conference worked out so well for our family. It ministered to the parents in immeasurable ways!

Our son, Cy, always asked, “Can I go to childcare now?” in the mornings. It was an added blessing that he could speak Spanish to the workers ...he felt right at home!

CCdA APPOINTS NEw CHAIRwOMAN

Longtime CCDA board member Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner was named Chairwoman of CCDA, succeeding Dr. Wayne Gordon, who will remain CCDA President.

I really appreciated the emphasis on personal shalom as part of what it means to seek the shalom of the city. The conference was really balanced and provided

enough times of worship, networking, teaching and inspiration. Coach Gordon’s challenge to spend more time in God’s presence was so helpful...I left feeling really encouraged. A big, big, big thumbs up!”
