debating, thereby emulating the School’s motto, Age Quad Agis, at the highest levels.

Stable enrolments and the enthusiastic participation of the community in all we offer, reflect a broad satisfaction with the School and its provision of a forward looking, creative and often personal and engaging education, capable of preparing students for the future.

It is a source of great pride to be a part of the Fintona community, a feeling I know I share with staff and students. The Annual Report gives us a chance to celebrate our achievements and look to the future for new directions and developments.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

gives me great pleasure to present the 2016 Annual Report of Fintona Girls’ School. Although this is a

mandated requirement of government, it gives us a chance to consider our progress during the year in all areas of school life, including academic, staffing, co and extra curricula and buildings and grounds. It also contains information regarding future directions, both immediate and more distant.

In 2016 we celebrated 120 years of providing a first class education for young women and more latterly, boys in the ELC, giving us also a chance to reflect on the many changes the School had undergone over its lifetime and the many people who had contributed to it over that time.

Our students, once again, achieved outstanding results in both NAPLAN and the VCE and combined these with an extensive involvement in sport, music, drama, public speaking and

“WITH THE EXTRA ATTENTION WE PROVIDE IN A SMALL SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT, OUR GIRLS CONSISTENTLY ACHIEVE AMONG THE HIGHEST VCE AND NAPLAN RESULTS IN AUSTRALIA.”

WHO WE ARE

Fintona is an independent, non-denominational day school for girls, which is renowned for high academic and personal achievement.

Situated in the inner eastern suburb of Balwyn, we cater for girls from Prep to Year 12 and offer a co-educational early learning program for girls and boys. The International Baccalaureate is taught from ELC to Year 4.

Fintona holds fast to its motto Age Quod Agis - Do what you do well. From its commencement in 1896, Fintona has espoused the view that ‘girls can do anything’ and has encouraged students to be critical, independent thinkers empowered to take their place as active, effective citizens and leaders.

With the extra attention we provide in a small school environment, our girls consistently achieve among the highest VCE and NAPLAN results in Australia.

Our friendly, supportive and caring environment, together with our broad-based education programs, provide our girls with many experiences to stretch themselves beyond expectation and to cope with life beyond school.

Inspired by exceptional teachers, a Fintona girl will find the confidence to soar and achieve her highest academic and personal aspirations.

OUR ETHOS

Fintona student can be recognised as one who faces her life with the simple belief that to live is to learn. In every endeavour, she

aspires to do the very best she can. She is able to learn and work independently, yet enjoys the opportunity for interdependent and collaborative work. She holds secure moral principles and beliefs, believes in a healthy body, whilst remaining attuned to the intellectual, emotional and spiritual dimensions of her being.

As a communicator she is poised and confident, is largely self-directed but will ask for help, if needed. For her, the pursuit of excellence is assumed, not contrived, and she knows this innately. We hope that she accepts her limitations and believes

A that within those limits she can be inspired to make a difference. She nurtures a love of tradition and heritage whilst maintaining a positive vision for the future. She is protective and proud of the School’s reputation and her own and aspires to be truthful and kind in her interactions with others.

Her outlook is optimistic and global, essentially because she is tolerant and believes in the inherent decency of all people. She tries to look upon others as individuals rather than a crowd, and is respectful of difference. Like all people, we hope she understands that she has her faults, yet she also reflects on her own behaviour. In all aspects of her life, she eschews what is vulgar and mean-spirited, and directs herself to what is good and noble.

Fintona, we believe that our teachers are one of our greatest assets. We are

very proud of our staff and recognise that they work enthusiastically to produce outstanding outcomes for their students. In 2016, the average staff attendance was 97.7% while the retention rate was 84% (this lower than usual figure is attributable to a number of long serving staff who retired at the end of 2016).

The Professional Learning attended by staff was part of the School’s Professional Learning Plan which aims to provide staff with the opportunities to strengthen their academic knowledge and teaching skills whilst at the same time encouraging participation in broader areas of interest.

Staff attended Professional Learning sessions outside the School on 122 days during the year.

As well as this, all staff attended Professional Learning sessions provided by experts in various fields, brought into the School for Staff Days at the start of each term and on other occasions during the year. Staff also attended a wide variety of conferences and seminars many of which were subject and VCE related but others dealt with such topics as Leadership, Anxiety, First Aid, Asthma Awareness and Anaphylaxis.

The average expenditure per staff member was $650.

PARENT SATISFACTION

roviding the best possible education for our students is Fintona’s primary objective. To help meet

this commitment, we undertook a Parent Satisfaction Survey through ISV (Independent Schools Victoria). Two surveys were conducted; one for the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools and another specifically for the ELC parents. Data was obtained from 234 respondents from the ELC through to Year 12.

The aim of the Parent Satisfaction Survey was to gain valuable feedback from parents, and to understand perceptions regarding the quality of the educational experience at Fintona.

The Parent Satisfaction Survey measured parents’ responses across eight domains including Curriculum/Academic Program, Quality of Teaching, Learning Outcomes, Pastoral Care, Discipline and Safety, Resources, Parental Involvement, Resources, and Year Transition. In addition, the survey asked parents the reasons for choosing Fintona and whether they would recommend Fintona to others.

The ELC specific survey included additional domains such as Personal Development, Social Development and Ethos.

Overall, the results demonstrate that Fintona parents have a very high satisfaction level in every domain at ELC, Primary and Secondary levels with the mean for each domain being considerably higher than the ISV reference group.

• Consistently outstanding results amongst a group of non-selected students

• A real satisfaction with the breadth of the opportunities for students outside the classroom and a recognition that participation is the most important aspect

• A recognition that staff are always willing to go the extra mile to support students in their endeavours

• The curriculum provides exceptional educational opportunities enabling the fulfilment of students’ aspirations

• The teaching staff are committed, dedicated, approachable and excellent role models

• The vast majority of students are very happy at school, motivated to learn and feel a strong sense of belonging

FUTURE DIRECTIONS

intona is committed to being an innovative teaching and learning organisation, while staying true to

its tradition of maintaining the building blocks of a good education; literacy and numeracy. Fintona staff, under the leadership of the Head of Curriculum and Staffing, constantly review their practices and methods and incorporate the creative ideas being developed within the educational field both within and outside Australia. We also stay informed about trends beyond school in the tertiary and employment sectors to empower our students to be able to take advantage of opportunities to operate in the 21st century global economy.

The Head of Curriculum and Staffing continued to implement our three year Teaching and Learning Strategy and in 2016, led the discussion around critical thinking and assessment and flagged the idea of a total audit of electives to occur in 2017. We farewelled a number of staff who were retiring after many years of service to the School and who have made an enormous contribution to its success. We also established our Development and Community Engagement Office.

Our Strategic Masterplan was put before the Boroondara Council and at the end of 2016 was still being assessed. We completed renovation

of the Junior School Music Room, the Year 3 classroom, the Junior School science and mathematics room and the Science Discovery Room for Year 5 and 6 students. We also completed the major renovation of the Senior School Resource Centre, much to the delight of the students and staff who use it. Once the Strategic Masterplan is endorsed by Council, we will begin the immediate task of developing our new science building.

At the end of 2016, Sally Clayton, retired as Head of the Junior School and we welcomed Eleni Goulas into that role. Prior to commencing in 2017, Eleni spent a great deal of time at the School, getting to know the community, spending time with Sally and generally immersing herself in the life of the Junior School. We are looking forward to her taking on the role formally in 2017 and to her contribution to the School.

As the School enters its 121st year, I am confident it will continue to ‘do what it does well.’

FINANCIAL OPERATIONS

he Finance and Administration team is responsible for providing information and process systems to

all layers of the School. It continually strives for efficiencies to best utilise the resources available to the School whilst meeting all statutory and compliance needs.

Fintona recorded another positive financial result for 2016 underpinned by consistently high student numbers and the School’s financial discipline. Over the course of 2016, the School maintained student numbers close to 600 with most year levels at or near capacity.

The School has been in a strong financial position for many years and 2016 continued to build on this position.

A number of infrastructure projects were completed in 2016, including the Science Discovery Room in the Middle School, the refurbishment of the Senior School library and the upgrade of the Junior School classrooms.

The IT department continued to provide support and services in line with its operational plan. Work commenced to upgrade the IT infrastructure around the School, including VOIP telephony, high speed internet and upgrading data back up and disaster recovery equipment.

The Maintenance department completed a number of special projects and continued to ensure the grounds were presented neatly and consistently maintained to an excellent standard.
