ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the development of India, partnering industry, Government, and civil society, through advisory and consultative processes.
CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization, playing a proactive role in India’s development process. Founded in 1895, India’s premier business association has over 7200 members, from the private as well as public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect membership of over 100,000 enterprises from around 242 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.
CII charts change by working closely with Government on policy issues, interfacing with thought leaders, and enhancing efficiency, competitiveness and business opportunities for industry through a range of specialized services and strategic global linkages. It also provides a platform for consensus-building and networking on key issues.
Extending its agenda beyond business, CII assists industry to identify and execute corporate citizenship programmes. Partnerships with civil society organizations carry forward corporate initiatives for integrated and inclusive development across diverse domains including affirmative action, healthcare, education, livelihood, diversity management, skill development, empowerment of women, and water, to name a few.
The CII theme of ‘Accelerating Growth, Creating Employment’ for 2014-15 aims to strengthen a growth process that meets the aspirations of today’s India. During the year, CII will specially focus on economic growth, education, skill development, manufacturing, investments, ease of doing business, export competitiveness, legal and regulatory architecture, labour law reforms and entrepreneurship as growth enablers.
With 64 offices, including 9 Centres of Excellence, in India, and 7 overseas offices in Australia, China, Egypt, France, Singapore, UK, and USA, as well as institutional partnerships with 312 counterpart organizations in 106 countries, CII serves as a reference point for Indian industry and the international business community.

Dear Member,
It is almost a year since I took over as Chairman of CII Southern Region. The year was marked with lot of changes, growth opportunities and different challenges in terms of economic outlook and civil society requirements. While, businesses were busy realigning their strategy with respect to the opportunities and volatilities in the environment, the importance of a support infrastructure in the social sector was also strongly underscored.
Amidst these critical issues, CII Southern Region decided on the theme, “ICE - Inclusiveness, Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship for Growth and Employment” for 2014-15 in line with the CII’s national theme, “Accelerating Growth, Creating Employment”. Empowerment of women was a key agenda as part of Inclusiveness theme and the action plan towards the same has been effectively implemented through Indian Women Network for the second consecutive year.
IWN was launched on 23 January 2013, in Chennai. Since then IWN has spread to 11 states and 7 zones nationally. IWN has constituted 3 task forces to deliver value-added and need based intervention for the members namely:• Learning & Development• Well-being• Policy & Advocacy
I am very glad to note that IWN has been very active with a gamut of programmes and activities in supporting this important mission.
I am also happy to note the sheer variety of the interventions- right from health talk and medical camps, Programmes on personal effectiveness, Leadership Sessions, Mentorship workshops to conclaves. It has been a very active year in constituting the building blocks for creating gender parity and also to make women stronger to take on the challenges of the modern work environment and balance it with a healthy family life. The tangible and intangible impact created by these initiatives are of immense value not only to the women, but for the whole society.
I would like to congratulate Ms Suchitra Ella and her team for brilliantly driving the initiatives during the year and also wish good luck for scaling up the interventions in coming years.
Thank you.

members from southern region had participated in the CII HIDA training programme on empowerment for women leaders in India which was held from 17th to 21st November 2014 at HIDA Tokyo Kenshu Center, Japan. I had the priviledge of meeting Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women on 11th November 2014 at Delhi to brief on IWN and possible synergies. At the meeting, UN had expressed interest to partner with IWN for women’s initiatives.
IWN recognizes the national importance of nurturing women’s health and well being in a holistic manner to help bring about a ‘good work-life balance’ there by contributing to social inclusiveness. I am glad that the state IWN chapters have organized several health camps, blood donation camps, sessions on women’s health issues for the benefit of women. Besides these, webinars on health topics were also organized in partnership with Apollo Hospitals, the Well-being partner for IWN Tamil Nadu wherein health experts interacted with members on varied themes.
Last year, IWN had an important objective of delivering sessions on Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act at Workplace (Prohibitions & Redressal) Act 2013. Sessions were held across the southern states and zones for the benefit of our membership. Further to this, sessions focusing on the ‘Internal Complaints Committee’ (ICC) were also organized and IWN shall continue to organise more sessions on these themes.
IWN recognizes the importance of having more women on corporate boards hence sessions towards orienting ‘women independent directors’ have been planned which will be conducted across the region this year.
IWN had submitted recommendations to the new union government on women’s empowerment in 2014 which emphasized on the promotion of women entrepreneurs, exclusive SEZ for women, safety of women, special incentives for companies hiring 60% or more women & ensuring representation of women in the boardroom.
The website www.indianwomennetwork.in which was launched last year is a platform for online networking for our members wherever they may be. It captures details of events completed and forthcoming events. Members can also blog, post pictures and share articles.
I participated in the CII Southern Regional Council meetings and had the opportunity to brief the council on the progress of IWN and had requested members to nominate women colleagues from their organizations to the IWN membership and thank the council members for their support.
IWN will continue to reach out to engage and empower women through various initiatives to augment knowledge, skills and equal opportunity to enhance inclusive growth and economic parity.
I would like to place on record the support given by Mr G V Sanjay Reddy, Past Chairman, CII Southern Region for laying the foundation for the Indian Women Network. I thank Mr B Santhanam, Immediate Past Chairman, CII Southern Region for the guidance and encouragement in the founding years of IWN. I wish to thank Mr Navas Meeran, Chairman, CII Southern Region for his unstinted support throughout the year. My appreciation to Ms Rajshree Pathy, Deputy Chairperson, CII Southern Region for inviting me to join the CII membership meets in the region. I thank Dr R Nandini, Deputy Chairwoman, IWN Southern Region for her support all year long.
I take this opportunity to thank all the Past Chairs of the Region and the States for their motivation and encouragement by participating in many IWN launches and programmes over the last two years. I thank all IWN State Chairwomen & Vice Chairwomen, Task Force Convenors & Co-Convenors, Zonal Convenors and Co-Convenors who have made my journey at IWN unforgettable.
I thank Ms Madhu Vasanthy and all the CII Directors and IWN executives from the southern states for extending their support and cooperation in building IWN .
Thank you.

Dear Member,
The talk and the need of the hour is women leadership across the world. The relevance in India is even more significant as increasing numbers of young girls and women are pursuing higher education and entering the work force in government, industry, academics, services, consulting etc. Today, women play a vital and leading role in every field of business or profession thus contributing to the economic development of the nation.
Opportunities do come with challenges especially in developing countries when we are in a knowledge driven global arena - quality of education, acquiring the right skill set, choosing career options, learning & building one’s career, maintaining work-life balance, keeping up with information and technology etc are quite demanding. It is in this context that Confederation of Indian Industry, Southern Region took the initiative to launch the INDIAN WOMEN NETWORK (IWN) in January 2013 at Chennai. We hope to reach out to a broader community of women across the spectrum. The aim is to provide a sense of community spirit which enables women to face challenges as a team rather than facing them individually. IWN is a common platform for interaction of ideas and opportunities and an excellent platform for networking opportunities. It connects women from various dimensions and helps them in broadening their scope, insight and awareness.

IWN NORTH EAST REGION
The status of women in the North Eastern Region of India is comparatively better than the rest of the country in many aspects. In some cases women from the region have become beacons for the rest of the country, especially Manipuri women, who are perhaps the most politically empowered in the country. Yet there are many areas which need development and through India Women Network, in North East India, we are able to bring together women from all walks of life to share knowledge, to raise issues, to listen to one another, to network better and to find ways forward to further women empowerment in the Region.

Yes, “Women are game changers in a complex world”. The Indian Women Network (IWN), an initiative of Confederation of Indian Industry aspire to create a conducive atmosphere for women to make them active in business and provide more opportunities in different fields. I am happy to be Chairing the Delhi Chapter of IWN, where we are working very closely with women of the State to provide them with a platform to discuss issues and opportunities at work places and learn from each other’s experiences. Idea is to provide hand-holding and exposure to the women for their exponential growth in their respective felid.
