Chesapeake Music’s 35th year, my first as President, did not turn out as expected. The year began as planned, with two successful Jazz concerts. The first, in November 2019, featured the extraordinary trumpet player Dominick Farinacci, and the second brought back audience favorites, the Anderson Twins, for our annual Valentine’s concert.

While still savoring the success of these events, our world was turned upside down by the global health crisis that shut down live programming. The staff moved quickly to set up remote operations, while the Program Chairs found alternatives to the traditional live performances. The biennial Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition was postponed to April 2021, with the same five finalists scheduled to perform. The annual Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival transformed into Virtual Virtuosi!, one of the first virtual concert series to be delivered in the country, featuring four original performances and an interactive family concert aired online.

I couldn’t be prouder of the way our Board of Directors, Executive Director, Artistic Directors, Program Chairs and staff responded to this adversity. I couldn’t be more grateful for how our loyal donors and audience generously supported us and our new initiatives; the outpouring of concert sponsorships for Virtual Virtuosi! helped support our musicians during this most difficult time.

Chesapeake Music has weathered a challenging year; as a result, we are a stronger and more vigorous organization. While at this moment, no one can be certain as to when, and in what format, we can return to live performances, Chesapeake Music will not stop providing internationally recognized musicians in concert this upcoming year, nor will we stop showcasing up-and-coming performers. We continue to plan our programming, taking into account the need to be flexible and responsive to evolving circumstances. We remain committed to our mission, to bring renowned musicians to delight, engage and surprise today's audiences, and educate, inspire and develop tomorrow's.

We need your support to continue fulfilling our mission! This support has helped Chesapeake Music grow from a single Sunday afternoon performance to the organization we are today, 35 years later.

I thank each and every one of you for your contributions and encourage you to respond to our Annual Appeal when it arrives in November.

Barry KohPresident, Chesapeake Music
