DireCtor’s report

T he academic year 2006-2007 was extremely productive for the helsinki collegium for advanced studies. We continued to work hard to develop our institute along the lines outlined in the suggestions by the distinguished evaluation panel that visited us in 2005 and wrote a very encouraging report on our activities. during the year 2006, we also prepared an extensive target programme for the helsinki collegium for advanced studies. this document, accepted by our

executive Board, will serve us as an important strategic plan for the years 2007-2009.in the target programme, our mission is stated in the following way. the helsinki collegium for advanced

studies conducts first-rate research in the humanities and the social sciences, promotes interaction between researchers and disciplines, promotes cooperation with helsinki university departments, faculties and institutions as well as with other universities, enhances the international networks within the fields it supports, and promotes the international visibility of finnish research. the hcas offers a creative environment that encourages critical cross-disciplinary discussions on the nature of humanistic and social scientific research, its methods and theoretical premises, and its role in society.

our vision of the future is also described in optimistic terms. the hcas will become one of the leading european institutes for advanced study in the humanities and social sciences, but at the same time will develop its distinctive character as a finnish academic institution. the hcas is known domestically and internationally as an attractive research environment for the best researchers in the fields it supports. the hcas forms a

creative and inspiring research community whose members successfully implement their research plans, develop cooperative projects, cross disciplinary boundaries and deepen interaction between the academic community and society as a whole.

the last year has shown that the targets we have set ourselves have not been too ambitious, especially as regards the increasing internationalization of our profile. the statistics for our application procedures prove that our reputation has grown all over the world. last year, we received a record number of applicants. We received 318 applications, out of which 49 per cent came from outside finland. this year, the growth has continued. the number of applications in this year’s round was even higher. of the 398 applications received, a clear majority are from scholars located at non-finnish academic institutions. furthermore, it is not just the numbers that are impressive: the last year’s procedure also showed that the quality of the best international applications is extremely high. therefore, we have now been able to appoint a much more international selection of fellows than during the first years of our activity.

We have also made progress in expanding our funding resources. the kone foundation exchange programme for visitors from russia and Baltic countries has been renewed for another three years, and the experiences we gain from it continue to be extremely rewarding. We are grateful to the helsingin sanomat foundation for funding a fellowship for us for studies on the media and media industries, and to the finnish ministry of education’s centre for international mobility (cimo) for awarding us a sitra fellowship on india studies. We are also negotiating with other funding partners and expect important breakthroughs in the near future.

our programme during this academic year has been multifaceted and intensive. the collegium organized 23 internal Brown Bag seminars, 11 visiting lectures and 11 symposia and seminars. the fifth annual collegium lecture, “the myth of mars and venus: the uses of language and gender research in the academy and the World”, was given in april by professor deborah cameron (university of oxford). the second volume of our

e-journal collegium: studies across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, entitled the trouble with ribs: Women, men and gender in early modern europe, and edited by anu korhonen and kate lowe, was published in spring 2007. several more volumes are in preparation.

We started two new lecture series this year, “studia collegialia. ihminen ja yhteiskunta tutkimuksen valossa (human Beings and society in the light of research)”, and “minds to rule. interrelations between political power and the powers of the mind in Western philosophy”. the aim behind the series was to enhance the visibility of the collegium among the students of the centre campus of the university. the former series, which consisted of four lectures in finnish, dealt with issues of belief and knowledge and was aimed at a larger intellectual audience, whereas the latter was mainly intended for undergraduate students at an intermediate or advanced stage of their studies in humanities, social sciences, theology, women’s studies or legal studies. the theme of the minds to rule series grew out of one of the collegium’s target research areas, studies on consciousness. Both types of lecture series will be organized again during the forthcoming academic year.

We also continued our cooperation with our corresponding institute in uppsala, the swedish centre for advanced study (scas). in august 2006, a second summer school, led by the visiting ernst cassirer professor at the scas, hans-peter krüger, was jointly organized by us and our swedish colleagues. the theme of this successful event was philosophical anthropology in habermas, foucault and agamben. in summer 2007, we also signed a cooperation agreement between the helsinki collegium, scas and riksbankens Jubileumsfond (tercentenary foundation of the Bank of sweden), which established the erik allardt fellowship to support the exchange of visitors between the two institutes. We are again very grateful to our friends at the scas and riksbankens Jubileumsfond for working so hard to promote this inspiring cooperation. in cooperation with our permanent visiting fellow martha nussbaum (university of chicago), the collegium organized a two-day

workshop on liberty of conscience in June 2007. this cooperation will be continued and expanded at a week-long seminar and workshop in 2008.

as in the previous year, there were some changes in the collegium administration. tuula gordon and anneli aejmealeus, who served as deputy directors with great commitment, left us, and were followed by marjut salokannel in fall 2006 and ilkka pyysiäinen in spring 2007. hanna pellinen began her work as secretary in early 2007. a new executive Board, chaired by professor arto haapala, was appointed by the university senate for a three-year period beginning in January 2007. a new academic advisory Board also began their three-year term of service at the beginning of 2007. in January 2007, the first aaB meeting was chaired by professor cynthia freeland. the atmosphere at the meeting was excited and inspired. We are very grateful to the aaB members for their valuable work in assessing applications as well as giving us helpful suggestions for improving our activities and procedures. i am again happy to express my warmest thanks to all concerned and we are all looking forward to meeting future challenges.

SeMINArS AND SyMpOSIA

September 29, Interdisciplinary Symposium taxonomies and categorisation

inspired by their co-fellows’ interest in research questions related to taxonomy and typology, anneli meurman-solin (collegium) and heli tissari (collegium) organised a symposium to discuss current theoretical and methodological approaches to the principles and practices of categorisation. the keynote lecture on “english dimensional terms: analysing a spatial categorisation system through corpora” was given by professor suzanne kemmer (rice university, houston, texas), who stayed at the collegium as a distinguished visiting fellow for a period of three weeks. dr maria vilkuna (research institute for the languages of finland) shed light on the typology of passive and retrospective verb constructions in finnish and dr matti miestamo (collegium) discussed negative and interrogative structures in the languages of the world, while anneli meurman-solin discussed the theory and methods of a variationist typological approach to describing linguistic systems. dr. mari siiroinen (department of finnish, university of helsinki) provided a survey of the linguistic categorisation of verbs of emotion on finnish. While marianna hintikka (research unit for variation, contacts and change in english) examined ways of categorising metaphors of illness in early modern english political discourse, professor marja-liisa honkasalo (collegium) discussed metaphors for heart diseases in contemporary finnish contexts. dr pasi falk (collegium) guided us through the genealogy of taxonomical reasoning.

October 13, Interdisciplinary Colloquiumhappiness: cognition, experience, language

happiness is both a very philosophical and a very empirical matter. it was the topic of a colloquium, “happiness: cognition, experience, language”, organised by mikko salmela, heli tissari and anne Birgitta yeung on the 13th of october 2006. the program included eight different speakers from the fields of linguistics, literary studies, philosophy, psychology, and church and social studies. Juha sihvola opened the day with a paper on happiness in ancient philosophy. his paper was complemented by lilli alanen’s talk on cartesian generosity and contentment. zoltán kövecses presented the colloquium with a cognitive linguistic perspective on happiness, while markku ojanen answered the question “can happiness be increased?” in spite of their slightly different foci, all the papers interacted successfully, addressing similar sub-topics, such as health and the good life. the organisers are now editing a volume on happiness for the collegium e-series. in brief, the colloquium was a relatively small but rather happy event.

October 26, A Multi-Disciplinary Symposium interpreting shakespeare

the collegium offered a multi-disciplinary forum for researchers, translators and interpreters of shakespeare’s texts to come together and discuss recent activities and achievements in the field, and, in particular, how they could benefit from each other’s work. organised on the initiative of dr anneli meurman-solin (collegium) in collaboration with dr päivi koivisto-alanko (Wsoy) and the British council, the symposium aimed to highlight important work in the ongoing Wsoy project of retranslating shakespeare’s plays into finnish. the keynote

lecture on the originality of shakespeare’s sonnets was given by professor stanley Wells, chairman of the shakespeare Birthplace trust and honorary governor emeritus of the royal shakespeare theater, as well as emeritus professor of shakespeare studies at the university of Birmingham. alice martin (Wsoy) spoke about finnish translations of shakespeare and their connections to finnish theatre. dr kirsti simonsuuri discussed the sonnets, analysing her experience as their translator into finnish. the poet, novelist and translator matti rossi had chosen the topic “shakespeare’s fools - how to catch a falling star”. professor Jyrki nummi discussed shakespeare’s festive structure in four comedies by aleksis kivi; the rest of the papers in the afternoon investigated metaphors using tools of cognitive semantics in particular. the symposium ended with a panel discussion on shakespeare translations as literature and as theatre, with lauri sipari, irmeli niemi and kersti Juva as panelists.

November 24-25, Anniversary Symposium practice, thought and Judgment - hannah arendt 100 years

on november the 24th–25th, the helsinki collegium arranged a symposium entitled “practice, thought and Judgment: hannah arendt 100 years: anniversary symposium”. the symposium was organized by collegium fellows marja-liisa honkasalo and mika ojakangas. the guest keynote speakers were Joanna vechiarelli scott (eastern michigan university) and dana richard villa (university of notre dame). the aim of the symposium was to bring out new perspectives on the work of hannah arendt. thirteen presentations were given by finnish arendt scholars representing various fields of research. the keynote speakers commented on all the papers, and a lively general discussion ensued. more than 100 attendants were present during the two days. the symposium was arranged in cooperation with the department of political science, the christina institute for Women’s studies, the department of philosophy, and the department of social and moral philosophy.

April 12, Symposiumgender and language use

the gender and language use symposium was arranged in honour of professor deborah cameron (university of oxford), the collegium lecturer for the year 2007. the seminar started with her lecture on “the myth of mars and venus: the uses of language and gender research in the academy and the World” on april the 11th and continued with a set of 11 presentations on april 12th. the speakers came from various universities in finland, their topics varying from finnish children’s play talk with their peers to gendered usages in the classroom or on the internet, young people’s speech in different parts of finland, and even such topics as language use in the media or at work places. professor cameron acted as a commentator during the conference. there were approximately 30 participants in the seminar. the organizers of the seminar were collegium fellows liisa tainio and minna laakso.

April 27, renaissance Day Conferencethe aim of this day conference was to offer an opportunity for historians, art historians and museum curators carrying out research in the finnish universities and museums on the renaissance/early modern culture and history to meet, network and plan future activities. this event was important, because it was the first step in creating a strong basis for promoting interdisciplinary renaissance studies in finland. representing several institutions and disciplines in finland, 24 speakers each gave a 5-10 minute short introduction to their central research interests. in addition, two visiting speakers from the united kingdom, dr. philippa Jackson (university of london) and dr. marika leino (university of oxford) addressed topics concerning the renaissance domestic interior. a glass of wine and snacks ended an extremely rich and stimulating day, and was capped off with the decision to organise a similar event once a year.

May 4, Symposiumretoriikan nykytytkimuksen suuntia suomessa [the current directions of research on rhetoric in finland]

on may the 4th, a multidisciplinary symposium on the current trends in rhetorical research was arranged at the helsinki collegium for advanced studies. the event was organised and chaired by collegium fellow sari kivistö and dr päivi mehtonen (university of tampere). the goal of the symposium was to bring together researchers from various academic disciplines to discuss the forms and directions of rhetorical studies in finland. the seminar was attended by nearly 70 researchers, teachers and students from various finnish universities and institutions. the invited speakers included scholars representing the fields of philosophy, classical philology, social studies, finnish language, law, media studies and literary criticism. the presentations were followed by a lively panel discussion on the future and importance of rhetorical studies in present-day finland. after the event, the organisers established a mailing list – [email protected] – to provide a forum for people interested in rhetorical studies to share information on events and projects and to enhance the collaboration between finnish scholars of rhetoric.

May 15-16, Symposiumfeminity and embodiment

on may 15-16th, an international symposium on feminity and embodiment was held at the helsinki collegium for advanced studies. the symposium was organized by sara heinämaa, Joona taipale and virpi lehtinen and was sponsored by the helsinki collegium for advanced studies, the christina institute for Women’s studies (university of helsinki) and the academy of finland. this interdisciplinary event gathered together leading feminist scholars from the fields of philosophy and art studies to discuss problems of embodiment and gender identity, their conceptual analysis and artistic expressions. the speakers came from scandinavian, central

european and american universities: elisabeth grosz (rutgers), sigrídur thorgeirsdóttir (iceland), linda fisher (central european university), sara heinämaa (helsinki), eva korsisaari (helsinki), lisa folkmarson käll (uppsala), ellen mortensen (Bergen), kirsi saarikangas (helsinki), robin may schott (copenhagen), silvia stoller (Wien) and karen vedel (helsinki, copenhagen). the six sessions of the symposium were entitled: 1.) re-reading Bergson and nietzsche, 2.) developments in henomenology, 3.) carnality and caress, 4.) post-phenomenological inventions, 5.) moving bodies and space, and 6.) facticity and finitude.

June 15, Workshopliberty of conscience

a workshop on the liberty of conscience was organized following a lecture entitled “liberty of conscience: the attack on equal respect” by professor martha nussbaum (university of chicago), a permanent visiting fellow of the collegium. professor nussbaum presented in her lecture a historically based argument that equal respect for citizens is the bedrock of american freedom, and that the liberty of conscience became a right. however, today there are signs that this legacy is misunderstood, and the idea that christianity is what defines the americans as a nation is widespread. nussbaum insists though that nothing could be further from the truth of the founding fathers’ objectives. the lecture was followed with three workshop sessions: 1) religion and globalization, 2) freedom of conscience: philosophical themes, and 3) freedom of conscience: historical issues. in these sessions, susanne dahlgren, sara heinämaa, Jukka kekkonen, oleg kharkhordin, petter korkman, virpi mäkinen, mika ojakangas, heikki patomäki, tamar rapoport, Juha sihvola and miira tuominen gave their valuable contribution to the seminar lecturing on the liberty of conscience from various viewpoints while attempting to cover the wider scheme. still, much was left unspoken, and therefore this cooperation will be continued and expanded at a week long seminar and workshop in 2008.

August 22-24 Conference trade and War: the neutrality of commerce in the inter-state system

the period between the outbreak of the seven years’ War, in 1756, and the congress of vienna, in 1815, saw a major debate across europe about the political and legal status of neutral trade. rather than being a straightforward problem of international law, the issue challenged thinkers to reconsider the historical, legal and moral philosophical foundations of modern commercial society and the ways in which state sovereignty could be reconciled with universal economic development. from the 22nd to the 24th of august, an international conference dedicated to this debate and its influence on later times took place, hosted by the collegium in cooperation with the erik castrén institute of international law and human rights and the erasmus center for early modern studies in rotterdam. the meeting was opened with a key lecture by the former finnish minister of foreign affairs, erkki tuomioja, followed by ten presentations by leading international academics (from harvard, cambridge and across the european continent), which are currently being revised for publication with a well-known university press. the meeting was organised using funding from the academy of finland, the kulttuurirahasto and the finnish society of sciences and letters.

August 31, yksilö, yhteisö, hyvä elämä. Juha Sihvola 50 vuotta –juhlaseminaari [Individual, society, good life. Juha Sihvola 50 years of age - jubilee seminar]

on august 31st , a jubilee seminar was organized to celebrate the director of the helsinki collegium for advanced studies, professor Juha sihvola who turned 50 years of age. many of professor sihvola’s colleagues and friends enjoyed the opportunity to both give and listen to lectures on the diverse interests and passions of Juha sihvola – notably on the history of philosophy of the mind, ethics, and religious toleration. lectures

covered a wide scope of professor sihvola’s life. to counter balance the scholastic topics, participants of the seminar had the opportunity to peek also into professor sihvola’s private life, for example, lectures of his hometown and his passion for rock and roll. the Jubilee was followed with a reception at the collegium.

research title and Abstract: “A flye drowned in a spooneful of milke”: sub-Saharan Africans in

Europe, 1440-1650

this is an interdisciplinary project encompassing history, art history, law, literature and social anthropology. it addresses two core questions: what were sub-saharan africans’ experiences of life in europe between 1440 (when the first black africans were shipped to portugal as slaves from West africa) and 1650, and how did europeans react to africans in europe in the same time period? While these may look simple questions, they expose a wealth of complicated and thought-provoking issues. for example, what were the implications for black africans of their being legally and culturally differentiated from white europeans? labels of ‘black’ and ‘white’ came into common usage, and the arrival of black africans may have firmed up cultural constructions of whiteness and a sense of a pan-european, classically inspired culture in which black africans could only have a role by contrast.

research title and Abstract: The Theory and practice of Cultural Transitions; policing, citizenship and multi-plural communities

my project is designed to provide a comparative dimension to research on shifts in policing, security and citizenship in multi-pluralist contexts. the context in which policing and security agencies are exercising their legal authority has altered significantly. they are being challenged philosophically and operationally by global processes that are circulating people, goods, services, and ideas and reorganizing territorial space in unpredictable ways. de-bordering and de-traditionalising dynamics are transforming the habitus of a number of european societies. a diffused public nervousness and disquiet is being translated into a volatile politics of insecurity and intolerance. concerns have intensified post 9/11 and in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in madrid in 2004 and london in 2005. these new realities have thrown up unprecedented dilemmas for those policy makers and professionals charged with responsibility for managing the instabilities and risks associated with multi-plural transitions. police and security agencies are stretched across the frontline of wider public debates about just how much and what kinds of pluralism, diversity and difference a liberal democratic polity is able to accept. the primary research aim of this project is to identify and assess the new policing philosophies and strategies that are being developed to meet the security requirements of multi-plural societies.

research abstract:Ethnic and Local Identities in Post-Soviet Borderlands

Borders are areas where ethnic and national identities meet. this makes them ideal for studying the mundane forms of nation building. my research explores how states’ efforts at nation-building with and at their borders concretely affect the everyday lives of people living in the post-soviet borderlands between estonia, latvia and russia. i am interested in the efforts of local residents to adapt to, support or oppose the workings of their respective states in a situation where state borders are an important part of everyday life. i am using the local discursive themes of border, citizenship, ethnic, religious and local identity as indicators for the study of the local actors’ relationship with the state. i have undertaken and directed ethnographic case studies on all three sides of the state borders in question.

although the research project is empirical in nature, it also yields results that are relevant to theory formation in the social sciences. thus, besides offering comparative empirical material on the micro-level in these particular border areas, the study is also a contribution to theoretical concerns about agency and action, political authority, and global-local relations. the actual enlargement processes of the european union and

Areas of expertise: academic discourseintercultural communicationchild Bilingualism

research abstract:Language Maintenance of Russian Immigrant Children: the Role of Institutional Input

the studies on bilingualism indicate that children of immigrant families are very sensitive to the influence of the majority language. even children with high proficiency in the minority language spoken at home, loose it rapidly as soon as they start attending day-care institutions where they are intensively exposed to the majority language. although many parents could be anxious about such language loss by their children, they have only restricted possibilities to impede it as the minority language is used only in restricted domains and for restricted purposes.

the maintenance of the minority language can be however of importance not only because it helps to maintain one’s own cultural identity. the institutionally supported input of the minority l1 can also be helpful for the better acquisition of the majority l2 because of the interdependence of the l1 and the l2 development at the cognitive level. one of the means of supporting the minority language are bilingual kindergartens where caretakers speak to children not only in the language of the society but in the language of the family as well.

the study aims to examine whether and to what extent the language input in bilingual kindergartens helps to maintain the minority l1 spoken by children from immigrant families. it concentrates on the forms of the language input the children are exposed to and on the development of their proficiency in the minority l1. the subjects of the study are children from the russian-speaking families living in helsinki.

research abstract:Smiles, Sounds and Saxophones: Unconscious Processing within the Human Brain

although one is typically aware of the content of an auditory signal (e.g. speech, music) much of the actual processing may occur beneath the level of conscious awareness. this unconscious activity of the human brain may extend to the sophisticated processing of the emotional expressions on faces and the separation of complex mixtures of sounds into their component sources (e.g. musical instruments in an orchestral piece). Whilst this unconscious processing can occur in a matter of milliseconds, this processing may be influenced by an accumulation of experiences from a lifetime. perhaps the speed and sophistication of unconscious processing may be one of the evolutionary keys to the success of the human species. however, this fast unconscious processing can carry with it disadvantages such as individual pre-dispositions for anxiety and auditory distraction.

modern brain-research techniques, together with behavioural measures and mathematical models are used. the aim of this basic research project is to improve the understanding of the relation between perception, thought and emotion, with a particular emphasis upon unconscious processing within the human brain. the research findings that concern auditory distraction would be disseminated through the calm network, which guides the research strategy that sculpts eu policies on noise pollution. in the long-term, it is intended that the basic research findings could provide insights that inform research into psychosomatic illness. research Abstract:Spatial Moralities, Islam and the Public Sphere in the Middle East

studies on contemporary islam conceptualize global islam as transnational phenomenon characterised by committed activism, such as cyber muftis, Jihadists, and women’s piety movements. however, global islam is much more than that. rather than politics, the new global umma is about morality and leading a good life. as global formations replace local institutions of faith, religious engagement becomes increasingly a contested field, which also allows space for individual solutions. in this new situation, the public sphere is the arena where islamic and other discourses on normativity meet, and where different actors compete over moral and religious authority.

my aim is to approach the above issues from the perspective of non-activist, ‘ordinary’ people, for whom pressure from religious life-styles is a new challenge. By discussing positive morality as a spatial factor that organises social interaction, the study aims to introduce new ways of analyzing social dynamics in a muslim community. how do ‘ordinary muslims’ participate in authoring social space and in constituting the contested field of religious normativity? Why do some techniques of everyday life become ‘islamic’ while others not?

my research focuses on the relationships between people, their societies, and the physical space around them, in early medieval Britain. this project integrates varied kinds of evidence: literary (such as the famous old english poem Beowulf ), linguistic (such as place-names, which reveal places’ functions or dominant regional languages), archaeological (through which we can trace people’s physical shaping of the landscape) and documentary (such as records of land-grants). i am particularly interested in how different power-groups were able to control the use and significance of space. Where, for example, did public discourse take place? Who controlled who could go there, and what languages could be used? likewise, what spaces were sacred? Who controlled them? What benefits did control bring? these approaches provide alternative insights into how power operated, who was excluded, and how certain cultural traits (prominently the english language) spread or died.

research Abstract:Self and Other: Phenomenological Investigations into Sensibility, Spatiality, and Difference

the aim of the project is to produce a systematic explication of the self-other relation as it is understood within phenomenological philosophy. this includes a thorough investigation into the central – but traditionally bypassed – topics of sensibility, spatiality, and sexual difference. thus, the aim is to explicate and analyze the relation between the experiencing self and the experienced other in their corporeal encounter, and to contribute thus to our understanding of objectivity. the paradigmatic case studied by the tradition is that of visual perception: two subjects moving and gazing at each other in a shared space. the aim of the project is to advance, with the help of critical feminist scholarship, to study cases in which one of the subjects forms an internal space in which the other is able to live or linger. these alternative cases include the relation between a mother and the child and the relations between two lovers. the methods of research include the phenomenological methods of reduction and variation, the general philosophical methods of argument analysis and the historical-hermeneutic methods of interpretation.

research Abstract:Invisible Women on Board. Finnish Ship Masters’ Wives at Sea in the Late 19th Century

ship masters’ wives who sailed with their husbands on 19th-century merchant vessels were, paradoxically, both an unavoidably conspicuous and a necessarily invisible presence on board. By examining the manifold constructions of the prescribed female invisibility, this project seeks to explore the dynamics of male-female interaction at sea.

firstly, that interaction is studied within the marriages of ship masters and their wives. as it will be argued that emotional reasons formed by far the main motivational background for master couples to sail together, the study will also analyze the emotions of love and longing within the framework of 19th-century seafaring.

secondly, the encounter between the strongly male occupational ethos of seamen and the gender and femininity of the master’s wife is analyzed as a mutual adaptation process during a sailing. What were the adjustments which the traditional sailing culture required from the sailing wife, and what did she herself expect from her life at sea? throughout the study, the analysis rests on a variety of biographical sources, thus extrapolating collective experiences from individual accounts.

research title and Abstract: The Italian Renaissance of Artisans and Shopkeepers: Culture and experience in Sixteenth-century Siena

this study looks at the ways in which the middling classes of artisans and shopkeepers experienced renaissance culture. drawing on a range of archival documents such as household inventories, account books, notarial contracts, criminal records and fiscal sources, it examines how wealth and material goods were distributed across artisan classes in sixteenth-century siena, what meanings and values were attached to different types of domestic goods, how families with limited economic means acquired ready-made material objects, and what economic and social factors conditioned the use and acquisition of material goods at the lower social levels of the society. in looking at material possessions across a wide range of households, it demonstrates that contrary to what is often assumed, the gap between ‘high’ and ‘low’ was not as striking as we may have traditionally assumed. despite the limited economic and social means, artisans and local tradesmen such as tailors, barbers, bakers, innkeepers, and second-hand dealers were often in possession of a broad range of both decorative as well as utilitarian housewares, which they had acquired for a range of purposes through various mechanisms such as barter, credit, or pawn-broking. renaissance households were not as easily differentiated across social lines as we might have previously thought.

research title and Abstract: An Inquiry into Uncertainty – Ethnographies of Illness Experiences in Contemporary Finnish Culture

in social sciences and medical research, the question of uncertainty is seldom considered a kind of neutral quality of human life. the cluster of adjacent notions, such as uncertainty, contingency, and unpredictability are considered normatively, and for the most they are conceptualised by the notion of risk. in addition to risk, the meaning of uncertainty is constituted through control and management. according to the leading theorists of late modern society, such as giddens, our culture is a risk culture. it is claimed that the notion of risk is fundamental to the way both lay actors and specialists organize the social world. however, people’s experiences of reproduction, ageing, and illness in everyday life seem often to originate from attitudes of enabling and engaging uncertainty.

in this research, my thesis is that what people’s ways of conceptualizing uncertainty tell us about our culture can be approached on from the point of a critique of the Western cultural logic that informs our understanding of agency, social relationships and the limits of life. i ask 1) how do people conceptualise uncertainty in

their everyday lives? i ask this question through my ethnographies of chronic illnesses, such as pain and heart disease, but also in the context of high-tech medical settings. 2) how and when did the normative conceptualization of contingency in Western social and medical research begin?

research title and Abstract: Gendering Scientific Community: Research Careers, Gate-keeping and the Construction of “Excellence”

gender divisions persist in scientific research, academia and scientific community more generally. Women continue to be under-represented in the scientific community, and particularly so among academic gate-keepers and in leading positions in science and science policy organisations. the main aim of this research is to explore the gendering of the scientific community, with a special focus on research careers, gate-keeping and the construction of “excellence” in research and in academia. promoting excellence in scientific research is currently considered as a pivotal issue when aiming to strengthen the national and european research effort. how to combine the promotion of scientific excellence with the promotion of gender equality is a key concern for gender-sensitive science and research policy. overall, the study seeks to increase the understanding of gender dynamics in the scientific community, the conditions of research careers of women and men, the construction of excellence in research, and the conditions promoting change or creating and mobilising resistance related to gender equality in universities, scientific research, and science and university policy. the analysis of the finnish empirical material is complemented by participation as a partner in the eu fp6 funded european research project empowering women’s research careers in engineering and technology (prometea) and in advance, an eu fp6 funded mentoring

research title and Abstract:Interaction and Learning in the Development and Use of New Health Care Technologies

studying the design, the use, and their connections sheds light onto the dynamics of how technology enters - or fails to enter - our society. these dynamics, in turn, elaborate more normative questions on how the technology should be developed and in which ways development processes should be facilitated. achieving societally desirable, commercially viable and practically usable technology is demanding. the challenge is accentuated in specialized fields such as health-care, where designers face difficulty in understanding the practices and requirements of users, and where the users crave ever more sophisticated technology in dealing with unruly illnesses. my research explores the practices of high-tech producers and of those who appropriate technology in medical settings. interaction and learning between the participants of these disparate practices are of special interest. the studies have taken the shape of following longitudinally the development of new technologies from their inception to implementations, redesigns, and gradual stabilization. these processes tend to span over a decade and be dispersed to multiple sites. combining ethnographic observation, interviews and historiographic analysis provides means for grasping the minutiae of detail without sacrificing the scope of inquiry. Both are needed in creating an in-depth understanding of the communities and dynamics studied.

research title and Abstract: Ontology and Epistemology in Dance

my main research project, ontology and epistemology in dance, developed half by accident from a set of encounters both personal and textual. the further i looked into the history of dance as an art form, the more troublesome i found certain notions about the ontological nature of dance, particularly the issues concerning authorship that had resulted in my doctoral dissertation in 2003. instead of delving straight into the swamp of ontological definition, i have concluded that epistemological structures precondition how dance and dance research is conceived. specifically, i am looking at the ways in which this process differs from histories of other art forms, what the changes in narrative about the past are, and why. i believe that using a different epistemological lens would give us a very different kind of history of dance and force us to reconsider some of the issues that seem to trouble the field today. although my focus is on europe and on theatrical dance, through asking questions like what, when, where, and who makes dance an art the wider scope of the term ‘dance’ can also be indicated, and linked to questions of cultural hegemony.

the focus of my research was on the res aspect of res publica, rather than the publica aspect of it. heretofore political and social theorists have mostly concentrated on studying res publica as a form of government (opposed, for example, to monarchy), but they mostly ignored examining the role of res, the tangible and durable “public things” that serve as what we might call “republican infrastructure”, i.e. what constitutes arenas of public action or matters of concern for the public. however, the romans and many medieval and early modern republics paid much attention to this component of republican life. the project aimed at rediscovering it, with the goal of recasting debates in political and social theory.

research title and Abstract: Medical Imagery in Latin Satire

the tradition of latin satire is filled with images where the satirist acts like a medical doctor to reveal the patient’s real, corrupted and diseased nature which he may wish to conceal. during the renaissance in particular, medical vocabulary and imagery were used in characterising satire. satirists used images of bodily functions and illnesses as indices of the human condition. human beings were introduced as patients suffering from physical illnesses which were analogies of mental and moral defects. medical images were also used in referring to the curative function of satirical advice and in describing the satirist’s duty to cure the suffering and disturbed souls. satirists paralleled physical and moral sickness/wellness, and passions were largely understood as harmful diseases that needed to be cured by satire and rational advice given by the wise. the objective of my study is to give a detailed account of medical imagery and its functions in ancient and neo-latin satires. i deal with issues such as the healing nature of satire, satirical catharsis, disease imagery in satirical moral criticism, paradoxical disease eulogies and pseudo-scientific dissertations on satirical illnesses.

in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, new perspectives were adopted in the explanation of humans as social, moral and political beings. the new explanations were brought forth primarily by what we now term “the modern school of natural law.” the best-known representatives of this tradition are grotius, hobbes and especially pufendorf. scholarly interest is now turning to the dissemination of the new paradigm in the enlightenment. Jean Barbeyrac, pufendorf’s famous translator and commentator, was both an original thinker in his own right and an insightful analyst who can help us grasp what modern natural law theory “was really all about.”

the result of this research project will be a scholarly monograph on natural law in the early 18th century. it will focus on Barbeyrac’s mediation of pufendorfian natural law. it will also contain chapters on Barbeyrac’s influence in the french enlightenment (on rousseau and diderot especially), as well as chapters on other natural law theorists who participated in the discussions on natural law theory in the république des letters. one such author is Jean-Jacques Burlamaqui, a swiss professor of natural law. i am currently preparing a new edition of the seventeenth-century english translation of Burlamaqui’s main treatise for the liberty fund.

research title and Abstract: The History of Police Regulation in Early Modern Sweden and Finland

police legislation (polizeigesetzgebung) formed a fundamental part of the control systems of the emerging absolutist states of early modern europe. during the 16th and 17th centuries the number of police statutes increased enormously. police regulation encompassed a wide range of societal life, e.g. taxation, agriculture, manufacturing, commerce, mining, coining, health care, sanitation, education and schooling, road maintenance, public order, and the use of luxury goods. however, police statutes were not really considered to be law in the older, medieval meaning of the word. instead, they were seen rather as administrative decrees.

the aim of my research project is to study the police regulations of early modern sweden and finland (1523-1718). i am interested in the relationship between legislation and police statutes. What were the similarities and differences between these two forms of norms? for instance, what was the regulatory logic of law, on the one hand, and of police statutes, on the other? these are the kinds of questions that my research aims to answer.

research title and Abstract: Emerging and Developing Repair Practices in Children’s Interactions

i study videotaped interactions of typically developing finnish speaking 1 – 5 –year-old children. the large data corpus was gathered in the project “child’s developing language and interaction” situated at the department of speech sciences (responsible leader minna laakso). the data includes both longitudinal follow-up data and cross-sectional data from children interacting with their parents, siblings, or peers in home environments.

the basic aim of my project is to gain knowledge on repair organization in children’s conversations. using conversation analysis as the method, i analyze how children self-repair and modify their own speech and actions, and how they request for clarification from others. i am also interested in the repair activities of parents and the role these activities may play in children’s language acquisition and social development. in addition to speech, the multimodal resources of interaction (eye gaze, gesture and handling of objects) are examined.the research provides basic knowledge of emerging and developing repair practices with potential for applications in upbringing, education and speech and language therapy.

research title and Abstract: Private insurance as a technology of welfare: A study on the genealogy of economic subjectivity

lehtonen’s research examines the history of economic subjectivity during the latter part of 20th century in the nordic countries, more specifically in finland and sweden. the concrete subject of research is the history of private insurance and the economic and societal discussions in which it has been embedded. methodologically, the project draws on the tradition of the historical study of “governmentality”. the research is based on historical archive material. the main questions of the study are the following. first, what has been the societal role of private insurance in finland and in sweden in the formation of economic subjectivities during the second half of the 20th century? and second, how have people been encouraged to engage themselves in voluntary forms of insurance? empirical research on private insurance in the nordic countries shows how the nation-state, the free markets represented by insurance companies and the economic everyday practices of lay people – three elements that often are analysed as being in a somewhat antagonistic relationship to each other – have intermingled in the latter half of the 20th century.

research title and Abstract: Transnational Unionism and Democracy in Global Governance

capital and labour mobility undermine union strength, increasingly put unions on the defensive. if globalization is to be “democratized,” however, labour must assume a greater global role. historically, organized labour has been a force for building and maintaining democratic institutions. it is not clear that labour can play the same role in global politics, however, because international labour cooperation is undermined by the same competitive forces which make it important in the first place. as a result, the global labour movement does not have the mobilizing capacity or internal consensus to act authoritatively. this project aims to bridge the gap between parallel but separate debates on transnationalism and global governance. the first is the effort by labour studies scholars to understand the transnationalization of employers and unions, and the growth of global labour standard setting. the second is the debate in international relations about the growing importance of sub-national and private actors in global politics. the guiding hypotheses are that patterns of inter-union competition and cooperation shape union participation in sectoral global governance, influencing the characteristics of sectoral regimes, and that the development of democratic and legitimate global governance depends on the power of unions in global contexts.

in the eu the over 65-year-old population has increased from 11% in 1960 to 17% in 2000, and is expected to grow to 21% in 2020. simultaneously, changing family forms, living arrangements and social environments over the life-course have diversified the experience of old age. in this context, the determinants of ageing well, the ability to continue independent living and maintaining good health are key scientific and policy issues. however, not everyone can share on this. the diversified life-course experiences of older people are likely to be associated with increasing socio-demographic inequality in health and quality of life. also the workforce is aging, and this has led to a growing interest of governments and employers on early retirement and sickness absence among older workers.

research title and Abstract: Protean Tagged Databases and the Study of Variation and Change in Text Languages

the chief goal of this research project is to examine the theoretical and methodological implications of using linguistic inventories based on large philologically digitized and diatopically, diachronically and diastratically representative tagged databases in the production of typologically relevant new knowledge about variation and change in text languages. the data-driven and data-oriented variationist approach will provide new insights into how quantitatively and qualitatively improved linguistic data affect our conceptualization of categories, taxonomies and typologies. the tagging system developed for analysing overlapping and intersection between categories sharing the function of clausal connective, for instance, aims at identifying the typological implications of various degrees of fuzziness.

in addition to having shared goals with fellow researchers at the research unit for variation, contacts and change in english, a centre of excellence funded by the academy of finland and the university of helsinki in 2006-2011, i am working in close cooperation with the institute for historical dialectology (ihd), university of edinburgh, where there is unique expertise in the creation of linguistic atlases of text languages based on lexico-

grammatically tagged electronic text corpora. instead of text editions of varying quality, the corpora in the project have been created by digitizing diplomatically transcribed manuscripts dating from the period 1350-1750. the texts chiefly represent non-literary prose, ranging from a wide variety of statutory, instructional, narrative and argumentative texts with a primarily public social function to private documents such as diaries and family letters.

research title and Abstract: Symmetric and Asymmetric Structures: Patterns of Typological Markedness in Negation and Interrogation

language typology provides a world-wide comparative perspective on language. using an extensive language sample, representative of all language groupings in the world, this project examines how the world’s languages express polar interrogation (yes-no questions) on the one hand, and negation in non-declarative clauses on the other. special attention is paid to the structural differences - asymmetries - that these marked structures show vis-à-vis their unmarked counterparts, i.e., polar interrogatives vis-à-vis declaratives and negative non-declaratives vis-à-vis positive non-declaratives. functional explanations are proposed for these asymmetries. on a more general level, the project aims to improve our theoretical understanding of asymmetry and typological markedness, and thus prepare the ground for approaching further domains of language from a similar perspective. issues of language complexity will also be addressed.

the results of the project are significant to linguistic theory in general and will also be useful for researchers working on individual languages. furthermore, the ways in which linguistic categories are expressed in the world’s languages can provide insights into the nature of the corresponding cognitive categories, and the results will thus also be of interest to neighbouring fields, such as philosophy and cognitive science.

research title and Abstract: Mandeville and Medicine. Bernard Mandeville and the Scholarly Culture in Early 18th-Century Britain.

the aim of the research is to place Bernard mandeville’s (1670-1733) main medical work a treatise of the hypochondriack and hysterick diseases (1711; 2. enlarged edition 1730) into an intellectual context of early 18th-century scholarly culture in Britain.

this is a study of textual interpretation in intellectual history. an interdisciplinary approach is necessary in order to understand mandeville’s ideas in a wider cultural context, because the borderlines between various sciences and disciplines were different from the present times.

manipulating the human passions was for mandeville the only way to cure the mental disorders. the commercial British society was one reason for hysteria and hypochondria which, therefore, are interestingly on the threshold between individual and society – or between nature and culture. the book is written in dialogue form, because the conversations between a physician and a patient were, in fact, part of the healing process in mandeville’s view. in his book mandeville also criticised newtonian authors who wanted to make medicine mathematical, because it does not help the physicians to cure the patients. mandeville himself was a moderate empirist who, however, also blaimed the apothecaries for ordering far too many drugs for the patients.

research title and Abstract: Early Modern Ideas on Individual Rights and Their Late Medieval Background

the aim of this project is to show how late medieval ideas on individual rights (i.e., rights to life, property and self-ownership) developed toward the early modern period. the study pays particular attention to the resemblance between the late medieval and early modern theories of individual rights.there are at least two important questions to be studied concerning the origins of individual rights: (1) rights in situations of extreme need (the right to life), and (2) the origins of property rights (the right to property and self-ownership). these two questions had already been stated in the late medieval discussion on individual rights, but they were not fully incorporated and elaborated as theories of individual rights until the work of the early modern scholars.

the study will be an important contribution to the recently-renewed discussion on the origin of human rights.

research title and Abstract: The Political Genealogy of Conscience

the political genealogy of conscience is a genealogy of the late modern political subjectivity, defined by what i call the ethos of conscience. such an ethos becomes manifest in the radical deployment of the questions of conscience today, as if everything that entered the consciousness of contemporary man immediately became an ethical matter and thereby, because of the long decline in external moral and political authorities, a private matter for his conscience only. the first aim of the study is to examine the historical origins and the development of the ethos of conscience from the greek city-state up to martin heidegger and emmanuel levinas, through socrates, philo of alexandria, apostle paul, augustine, aquinas, luther, kant, friedrich nietzsche, among others. the second aim of the study is to outline a political theory of conscience based on the hypothesis according to which the secularised “voice of conscience” constitutes the very kernel of the individualistic moral and political order in contemporary Western liberal democracies.

research title and Abstract: Politics of Global Governance

globalization has given rise to a great number of research efforts addressing the questions surrounding global governance: how should it be arranged? through international law or politics? through the framework of states or transnational civil society? how should finance or multi-national corporations be governed? is global democracy possible – or is it even desirable? i study this problematic from two different angles. first angle is a long-term perspective on the development of forms of agency, structures and causal mechanisms of global political economy, the main outcome being political economy of global security. future crises and changes of global governance (routledge, late 2007). the second angle is a more normative take on future possibilities. the outcomes include a book on the theory of global democracy (a theory of global democratization: time, space and the emancipatory process, 2008) and another on the idea of global political parties (global political party: a manifesto, zed Books 2008).

research title and Abstract: Supernatural agents

my research concerns the various supernatural agent representations found in the religious traditions of the world, with special focus on Buddhist, christian, and finno-ugric traditions. theological treatises, ethnographic reports, and survey materials are used as sources. the aim is to analyze the interplay between “theologically correct” and actual representations and to show how the cognitive mechanisms of the mind help create representations of agents that are not directly perceived. the leading idea throughout is to show how the capacity to understand the agency of others’ and of oneself serves as a foundation for such supernatural agent concepts as ‘gods,’ ‘spirits,’ ‘demons,’ and so forth. “full-access” supernatural agents are those that are imagined to have an automatic and full access to other minds and to know their contents. thus, these representations help people process in mind the shared values and norms of a society.

research title and Abstract: “Literate Motherhood” among Palestinian Women: The “Etgar” Project in East Jerusalem

this study is concerned with the social meanings and consequences of an israeli-Jewish educational intervention program – etgar – intended for palestinian mothers living in a very poor muslim rural village (um-tuba) in east Jerusalem. the aim of this academic program, based on a universal, cognitive-psychological model, is to improve the readiness of “underprivileged children” for school by strengthening their mothers’ educational capabilities, assuming that the latter lack the “correct” skills needed for the betterment of their children.

the research will explore the link between “literate motherhood” and processes of social reproduction and change. specifically, it will look into the program’s academic, political, and scientific discourse and agenda; the participants’ interpretations of the program and the influences they attribute to it; and the program’s consequences for the mothers, their nuclear and extended families, and the community at large.

the research will contribute to theoretical discussions of the “cross-cultural encounter” and the paradoxes of cultural intervention, feminist and critical theories dealing with family and motherhood, the reception and

research title and Abstract: Weakness of Will in Renaissance and Reformation Thought

this monograph project aims at being a sequel to my earlier book dealing with the same topic from augustine to the 14th century. “Weakness of Will” (gr. akrasia, lat. incontinentia) is a major topic of ethics in the aristotelian tradition, meaning the problem why some people act against their better knowledge.

Beginning from petrarca’s de remediis, the following renaissance authors are studied: donatus acciaiolus, faber stapulensis, John mair and francesco piccolomini. the reformation authors include martin luther (and his erfurt teachers), philip melanchthon, Joachim camerarius, lambert daneau, theodor zwinger, Johannes avenarius, Wolfgang heider.

the study focuses on the emergence of distinct practical philosophy in the renaissance (esp. after faber stapulensis, with a peak in fr. piccolomini) and the reformation (luther’s free will controversies and their contact points with aristotle’s akrasia, later high point in poorly studied early 17th century lutheran ethics of heider and avenarius).

research title and Abstract: Affectivity and Normativity of Emotions

the objective of the project is to present a comprehensive philosophical theory of emotions. this project has two main branches. the first objective is to generate an adequate philosophical theory of the role and nature of feeling in human emotions. the second objective is to introduce the notions of authenticity and truth as both theoretically and practically viable norms of emotional appropriateness. the first objective has been met by proposing that emotional content is both cognitive and affective at the same time and that we can distinguish between primitively intentional first-order feelings, which emerge as analog representations of changes in one’s physiological state and second-order feelings with full-fledged intentionality, which arise as digitalized categorizations of the former. an integral account of emotional authenticity that analyzes authenticity as coherence between emotion and one’s internally justified values and beliefs has also been presented. furthermore, a theory of emotional truth that applies an anti-realist theory of truth as warranted assertibility to emotions has been proposed. the project will next focus on developing an explicit theory of the nature of emotions as well as highlighting the interdiciplinary validity of theories of emotional authenticity and truth.

research title and Abstract: For the Free Exchange of Ideas: Intellectual Property Rights and Basic Scientific Research

in an information society, protection of intellectual property rights (iprs) encompasses the whole range of knowledge production, from arts and scientific research to software and biotechnological industries. the role of iprs in society has thus gained an unprecedented significance. this study focuses on analyzing how ipr protection affects the production of scientific knowledge and its sharing at a global level. the question posed is to what extent are iprs a feasible and socially desirable incentive mechanism in scientific research when basic scientific knowledge is regarded as a global public good. the study will also analyze how governmental data dissemination policies affect the public availability of basic research data in the eu and the us respectively, and how this affects availability of research data at the global level.

the study will make concrete proposals as to the incentive mechanisms and legal framework which would best enhance production of and access to basic scientific knowledge both at the national and the global level. the emphasis is on production of such basic biomedical knowledge which is not under normal circumstances

my aim is to tell the full story of the rise and fall, within the enlightenment, of the ideal of civic friendship. the starting-point of my study is the conflict within enlightenment thought over the fundamental bond of human society. i seek to show that one entire tradition within political thought from the 1650s to the 1790s was united in the view that what should hold political society together is civic friendship. according to this view, citizens should constitute a fraternity and act toward each other as openly and honestly as brothers.

research title and Abstract: Transfer, Transformation and Return of the Philosophy of Science, 1930-1970

With the forced migration of the philosophers of the vienna circle and the groups in Berlin and prague the representatives of logical empiricism disappeared almost entirely from central europe. none of them returned permanently after the second World War. the research project reconstructs this transfer and transformation of the philosophy of science as well as its long delayed retroactive influence on the places of its european origins up to the cold War period. the context of this study is an international and interdisciplinary research project on the “Banishment and return of the philosophy of science: rudolf carnap and Wolfgang stegmüller” at the vienna circle institute: <www.univie.ac.at/ivc/stegmueller>.

a special focus will be on the european networking before, during and after World War ii, especially on the so far neglected contacts and interactions with philosophers in the nordic countries. this issue was the main topic of an international conference on “networks and transformations of logical empiricism. the vienna circle in the nordic countries” at the helsinki collegium, september 2-5, 2007.

in this project, i explore empirically the organization of classroom interaction and especially discipline management (“työrauha”) through the application of ethnomethodological conversation analysis. the data is a collection of video tapes of naturally occurring classroom interaction in finnish junior and senior secondary schools. classroom discipline management is an interplay between verbal and nonverbal activities, as well as the visual and spacial resources used by teachers and students. the framework of the research is interdisciplinary, drawing from linguistics, sociology, phonetics, educational studies and gender studies. the possible effect of the participants’ sex/gender is explored in detail. the research fills a gap in classroom discipline management studies by exploring naturally occurring situations and the role of pupils in discipline management, and by focusing on the nonverbal and spatial resources of the participants. classroom interaction and discipline is also studied in the light of teacher’s and students’ ideas and ideals of pedagogic authority.

it is hoped that the research will be of importance for conversation analysts and linguists as well as for teachers and teacher trainers that are interested in verbal, nonverbal and spatial aspects of classroom interaction. my research is part of a larger interdisciplinary project, “pupil, teacher and pedagogical interaction”.

research title and Abstract: Voice and Difference: Speech Representation and Otherness in Eighteenth-Century French and English Novels

and their Translations

my study examines the ways in which the speech of social groups defined by non-standard language use - children, women, country people, lower social classes, different ethnic groups and professions, sexual minorities, criminals, the mentally ill etc. - is represented in 18th-century french and english novels and their translations. the purpose of my research is to trace and explain the development of different forms of reported discourse in the ”long 18 th century” (ca. 1660-1830).

one of the main research questions is to examine how the transformations in reported discourse and in the representation of otherness reflect the evolution of literature in general. moreover, how do these transformations reflect the changing values of the society? in what ways do narrative forms interact with psychological, philosophical, scientific and political theories? lastly, what is the role of translations? do different forms of reported discourse ’travel’ via literary interference? how do translators treat linguistic otherness, represented through literary sociolects (chapdelaine and lane-mercier 1994)? the domestication or foreignization (venuti) of literary sociolects is an ethical question in translation, since translations are means of intercultural communication. translators can provoke or prevent experiences of (negative / positive) otherness (lane-mercier 1997).

research title and Abstract: A welcome experience? Conceptualising and evaluating emotions in English, 1500-2005

my research has focused on such issues as:1. Which emotions are evaluated as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, and in which contexts? metaphors for shame suggest that while it feels bad to be ashamed, it is valuable to be able to feel shame and to accommodate one’s behaviour to the needs of other people. if pride is associated with the original sin, it receives a much more negative reading than in contexts which emphasise human potential and allow pride to result from one’s achievements. however, both models for pride may operate at the same time.2. are there any words for ‘neutral’ emotions? it is likely that the adjective surprised is fairly neutral and can be used for both ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ surprises. however, people seem to prefer amazed when they are critical of something (i am amazed how …).3. What else does language tell us about the conceptualisation of emotions? even brief extracts of texts with emotion words involve many words for concepts related to emotions and allow us to characterise emotions in terms of their causes and effects, among other things. this underlines the importance of conceptual association.

research title and Abstract: Problems of Consciousness in Ancient Philosophy

contemporary philosophy of mind involves a nest of problems that are seen as perennial philosophical problems. my research project focuses on three of them: the so-called “hard problem of consciousness”, the mind-body problem and the problem of intentionality. i shall not treat them as problems of today’s philosophical problems. rather, i study in what sense these problems were present in ancient philosophical texts.

the hard problem of consciousness is how first person phenomenal subjectivity fits into the world described in objective third person terms. the mind-body problem concerns whether our experiences or thoughts may be reduced to accounts of the physical compound that constitutes our body. intentionality is often picked out as a characteristic of mental functions: it involves directedness at the object that i am aware of, e.g., in perception. one peculiar feature of the intentional relation is that the object may be non-existent (if i think of a unicorn).

the general objective of my study is to find out whether we are justified in saying that these same problems were treated in ancient philosophy.

research title and Abstract: The interrelationship of space, place and body in contemporary performance

my research will focus on the finnish leg of an ongoing project, which examines the production of space and place in contemporary performance. my approach is materially anchored in corporeality and privileges an interest in various performative practices alongside interpretation. involving participant observation it looks at the artistic creations by mainly three choreographers. focusing on the ways in which their works engage with current artistic, social and political discourses, the project views them in a local as well as a global context. central to the project are discussions of cultural / ancestral heritage and identity as well as of the bodily techniques, with which the performers relate to the space and place of the performance. the topic of the research, which is carried out in close contact with artist practitioners, is aligned with a theoretical discourse in visual arts, which interrogate not only notions of the ‘work’, and the relationship between artists/performers and viewers/spectators, but also the sites in which the works are installed.

research title and Abstract: In Search of Good Life. Research on Altruism - Acts and Faith

as individuals´ networks and what could be called “groups of good life” are changing today, so too are both altruism and religiosity. my research focuses on acts, attitudes, and faith in the networks of altruism and the role of values and religious elements in them. this research is carried out by investigation of the following three themes. 1) acts and attitudes promoting the networks of altruism. for instance, how do individuals view and understand pro-social and altruistic behavior, and who have they helped – how and why? 2) faith in the networks of altruism. Who are the individuals, groups, and institutions whom the individuals expect to promote their wellbeing; on whose altruism do they count on if personally in need? 3) faith and values in relation to the networks of altruism. how do individualistic and communal values – and their mixtures – relate to altruism? in order to gain novel experience-based information, this research will proceed through two phases: first, survey of finns, followed by life course approach interviewees. the findings will provide vital information for both to the development of theory in social science and theology and to praxis.
