About IABC Wellington

The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) is a global network of more than 10,000 communications professionals in 70-plus countries.

The IABC is a not-for-profit member organisation . Our core objective is to deliver value to our members, who are generally senior and management level communicators from government agencies, corporations, not-for-profit groups and professional consultancies .

IABC Wellington connects members to local and international trends in best-practice communications, by organising speakers, forums and networking events .

The Wellington chapter:

• has a network of more than 100 communicators, and communicates with more than 400 influential Wellington communicators every month

• works closely with IABC chapters in Auckland and Christchurch to provide opportunities and value to the broader New Zealand IABC membership

• is connected to more than 800 members throughout the Asia Pacific region

• has multiple Gold Quill Award recipients (International IABC Awards for communications excellence) .

President’s Report

It was great to see so many senior Wellington communicators at our opening event of the year. I’d like to think the interest was all in our AGM but that would be to deny the obvious attraction of hearing from Assignment Chief Executive, and Chair of the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency, Peter Biggs.

This is the second year in a row that we have enjoyed a sell-out crowd for our opening event after Z Energy Chief Executive Mike Bennetts wowed the crowd at the start of 2015. He had every communicator in the room wishing they could join Z’s communications team and it may be no coincidence that one of our Wellington board members recently did just that.

IABC Wellington is now firmly established in the city. In the past year we have expanded our partnerships and sponsorships, extended our links with IABC North NZ and South Island Chapters, grown our regional connections, particularly with the Australian chapters, and have invested significantly in improving the connections we have with IABC International.

The wider IABC community is also in good heart and there have been some exciting developments in the past year. In 2015 we made a significant investment of time and resource in rolling out the new international brand, giving us a fresh new look and strengthening our brand presence in Wellington.

We now have an unparalleled ability to connect senior communicators with global networks, speakers, resources and opportunities throughout the Asia Pacific region, and internationally.

It’s a great privilege to hand over to incoming President John Tulloch and the 2016 IABC Wellington board at a time when we are in such a strong position. For our strength and good heart, I must give thanks to colleagues and friends who

share my passion for professional development, and dedication to IABC.

Thank you to our past board members and, in particular, our past presidents. A special mention to our longest serving member Ann Kennedy-Perkins, and to our newest members. We are grateful for a strong ongoing support network.

All my appreciation goes to my 2015 board colleagues for their enthusiasm and commitment and for their unfailing good humour.

I must acknowledge five board members in particular, who departed from the board at the end of 2015. Spiro Anastasiou of SenateSHJ; Mary Macpherson, who did an award-winning job as Membership Director this last year; Sam Halstead, representing Ideas Shop; Sam Prescott of SenateSHJ, and Libby Clifford from DPMC. Thank you for your considerable contributions. I want to also mention former board member Hanna Kilpin, who left us during the year; and of course the incomparable Victoria Dew, who leaves her board role after five years of dedicated service.

Thank you also to all our members for your support for IABC Wellington in 2015. It’s been a pleasure to lead the chapter.

We regularly have board opportunities arising. Watch for an EOI when we are looking for nominations next.

In the meantime, we hope to see you at an event soon. Feel free to introduce yourself to one of our board members personally or email us at [email protected] if you have ideas or questions for us. We’re always up for coffee.

Membership matters

This year has been a challenging one for IABC globally, during which we have advocated strongly for Wellington members.

IABC Wellington membership, however, continues to flourish at around 100-110 members, positioning us as the strongest professional communications association in Wellington, and ensuring we punch above our weight within IABC for chapter size per head of population.

We saw substantial growth in the early part of the year, and numbers have held steady overall through a period of joining difficulties due to long- term underinvestment by IABC International in technology, now resolved.

Our focus is on delivering value for members through national, regional and international connections.

All membership dues and the majority of our overall income goes into delivering a high quality event programme.

We place a premium on personal contact with our members, and on being closely connected to our membership.

In recognition of our efforts to retain and recruit members in 2015, we are proud to have won a Merit Award for our Membership Marketing at the recent IABC International Chapter Management Awards.

Building community connections

This year we have worked to build closer relationships with our South Island NZ (Christchurch) and North NZ (Auckland) chapter colleagues to make the most of opportunities to share speakers and events and to support them as more fledgling communities for IABC in New Zealand.

We have also worked to make the most of the new Asia-Pacific (APAC) regional board and to support their growth in the interests of our members. In the context of a North American-centric global organisation, we see the regional dimension as offering us important benefits including speakers and professional development opportunities of cultural relevance.

We subsidised attendance for two board members at the inaugural regional Leadership institute in Sydney. Connections are also being built between board members and their regional and chapter board portfolio counterparts for ongoing collaboration. We are supporting the regional board with their planning for a regional conference later in 2016.

We put forward the nomination for Leanne Joyce, Chair of IABC Asia Pacific, who has worked tirelessly on behalf of APAC members in the past year, and was deservedly awarded IABC regional leader of the year at the 2016 Chapter Management Awards.

This year we have deliberately sought to gain greater visibility for Wellington globally, which has stood us in good stead. We have been committed to lobbying for resolutions to international membership and technology issues on behalf of Wellington members and have been grateful for the support of IABC’s Chief Executive and global chair in ensuring prompt attention to our requests.

We have ensured strong representation from Wellington members in Gold Quill judging; attendance at international Leadership Institutes and World Conference; a record number of NZ (Wellington) Gold Quill awards, and IABC world conference speakers; and we lobbied successfully for the visit of IABC global chair, Michael Ambjorn – at no cost to the chapter.

Delivering value through high quality events

In 2015 we maintained our core programme of 8-10 events, six-weekly, with the emphasis on our popular evening seminar programme. The substantial majority of our revenue goes into these events, which are the cornerstone of our local offering.

We also experimented with format and timing of events, in response to member feedback. We trialled a breakfast event to connect our members with their IABC UK counterparts, a boardroom lunch for executive communications professionals, and brought back a full-day workshop – on digital communications strategy.

Attendee rates have generally increased across our event programme on the previous year, with growth in both member and non-member attendance.

We closed the year on a high with the visit of global IABC chair Michael Ambjorn. In a visit programme of just two weeks across seven cities in Australia and New Zealand, Wellington secured a three-day programme, with 15 meetings encompassing an executive lunch, and corporate visits, along with a speaking slot at our end-of-year function.

This was an unrivalled opportunity to build connections and visibility for Wellington with IABC International and across Australia. It was also an opportunity to demonstrate value to members. We have had tremendous feedback from members and non-members and have gained new members as a result of the visit.

This underscores for us the value of IABC in connecting members to international best practice.

Leadership development

President Jennifer Andrewes, and Incoming 2016 Board Director Communications Katie Brown, had the privilege to attend IABC’s annual Leadership Institute (LI) in Long Beach, California in February 2016, which certainly made the international dimension real. Katie was fortunate to secure a full scholarship from IABC International to subsidise her attendance and Jennifer received a registration courtesy of the APAC region. Several hundred IABC leaders gathered, with representation from as far afield as the UK, Europe, Africa, and Asia as well as North America. We are committed to maintaining presence and visibility for New Zealand in IABC global conversations and continue to seek scholarships to assist with travel costs.

IABC Wellington has already benefited from the strengthened Asia Pacific regional connections made possible by the re-establishment of the IABC APAC board, led in 2014/15 by our own Victoria Dew, and more recently by Leanne Joyce from Canberra as Regional Chair.

Incoming 2016 President John Tulloch and Jennifer Andrewes also had the opportunity to attend the inaugural APAC regional leadership institute in Sydney in late November 2015 and took inspiration and heart from the shared vision in the room.

Sharing the value and ethos of IABC Wellington

A significant vote of thanks must go to our partners and sponsors, whose generous support ensures we are able to provide events and initiatives of value to our members, including international speakers.

ISentia have maintained their support for us through 2015 and we are grateful for this as their support has helped to offset the costs of our broader event programme, but also allowed us to offer targeted international social media workshop material.

We have been grateful for a long and supportive relationship with H2R who decided mid-year to end their partnership with us as they moved the focus of their business elsewhere.

We thank also Contact Energy for venue and design support; Dusted and Delicious for their catering partnership, Dave Armstrong for photography and Richard Pearse of Arpy for developing our Wellington brand guidelines and assets. We are grateful to Capiche for design and production of this annual report, and to Clive Pigott, Artful Dodge Photography for board photography.

A special thanks to Jackson Stone & Partners, whose sponsorship enabled us to offer a boardroom lunch with global IABC Chair Michael Ambjorn free to members and non-members. We are looking forward to working with them this year to provide a quarterly executive boardroom lunch series by personal invitation.

Finally, a note of appreciation for our friends and colleagues at IPANZ, and the Government Social Network with whom we have collaborated on those events of interest to our respective members.

We have invested in a new package of diversified sponsorship opportunities for 2016, and look forward to opening conversations and establishing relationships with new partners.

Financial overviewThe primary financial activity of the IABC Wellington chapter continues to revolve around events and professional development.

Our goals are to:

• continue to deliver value for members by ensuring the chapter is in good financial health

• continue to build our reputation as Wellington’s foremost communications member organisation

• maintain and attract a membership of senior communicators

• continue to deliver value for members by running a diverse range of events

• formalise supporting partnerships .

In 2015, total chapter income was $21,621 . Major sources of chapter revenue were IABC international membership contributions of $5,163, sponsorship income of $7,500 and event income of approximately $8,561 . The chapter’s Term Deposit of $12,050 continues to provide some financial cushioning .

In 2015, chapter expenditure was $19,265 . Events, including workshops, remain our largest category of expenditure, as members would expect .

In 2015, the vast majority of events were run at a loss . In 2016, the chapter will continue to deliver value for members in this way, but has honed its focus on sponsorship agreements that enable it to recover some event costs in order to reinvest in member outreach and marketing .

In 2015 the chapter spent $3897 on conference sponsorship for board members . This includes the IABC Regional Leadership Institute and the IABC World Conference . This expenditure allows our chapter to make the most of IABC international expertise and resource, which is returned to members via local events with international speakers . It also allows your board representatives to lobby for international visits, such as that by global chair Michael Ambjorn in December, and advocate for member speaking slots - such as Shaun Jones’ address at the most recent World Conference .
