Dear Friend,

Thispastyearhasbeenayearlikenoother.Throughtheglobalpandemicandthefightfor racial justice that came to the fore, we remained resolute. We have nearly 1,400 employees working daily. We are serving thousands of children and families across our many communities, and we continue to be there for them during this time, thanks to donors like you. The Children’s Village has changed the life trajectory of over 17,000 children and families this year. These numbers represent real change for people in our community who are on the path to reach their full potential — and You helped make it happen.

In this unprecedented time, we have all stepped up in ways we didn’t expect.

We remain focused on giving children and families what they need during the pandemic. Our in-person services like education and residential care continue whenever possible, but we have had to adapt. Our staff have embraced the challenge, modifying approaches and forging new ways to provide our services effectively. Our Adoption and Foster Care team learned to recruit and support foster/adoptive parents virtually, our Inwood House Division is tutoring thousands of students remotely, and our mentoring programs created virtual safe spaces for children in need. Donors like you provided gift cards, resources, PPE, funds for medication, and in-kind items for our families. The dedication from all members of our community has been remarkable.

We reaffirm our deep commitment to racial justice and diversity. The world has been shocked, saddened, and once again reminded of the pervasive and persistent racial injustices in our country. We witnessed the disproportionate impact that police brutality and the pandemic have on poor communities and communities of color, but the reaction of our youth is inspiring: They have held rallies, attended Know Your Rights empowerment workshops, and partnered with our communities to be a voice for change. We have engaged in conversations about systemic racism through our Undoing Institutional Racism committee since 2011 but also acknowledge our role in the challenged history of the child welfare system. We are all in this fighttogetherandarecommittedtodemonstratingwhataninclusiveorganizationlooksandfeelslike–anorganizationthatvaluesallpeople,supportsengagedleadership,andtakespragmatic action.

Finally, we want to extend our thanks to Paul Jenkel, who stepped down from his role as Chair of the Board of Directors. Since Paul joined as a Trustee in 1993, he has been a catalyst for moving ourorganizationforwardyearafteryear.ThankyouPaulforyourdedicationtoourstaff,youthand families. We look forward to your guidance in your new role as Chair Emeritus.

“When I came to live at CV I wasn’t thinking about what was next, I just knew I wanted to stay out of trouble. When I found the basketball team I thought that maybe I could play in college, but I didn’t believe it could really happen. My mentors and coaches at CV kept pushing me to do my best in school and on the court. They pushed me to believe in myself, and last season we ended up winning the Section 1 Class D title and I was named MVP. I signed to play at SUNY Fulton-Montgomery Community College and can’t wait to get started. Without all of the support I got from my teammates, coaches, and mentors I wouldn’t be where I am today. I can’t wait to see what’s in my future.”

“Last year, I was at risk of losing custody of my kids. There is a lot of stigma around having a mental illness, and it was hard to prove that I could be a good parent. But since I started working with Children’s Village, I’ve learned so many skills that help me regulate my emotions and be the best mother possible. My social worker is there for me 24/7. She really got to know me, and was able to help guide me through the systems to prove what a loving and responsible parent I am. We’re all doing so well now that we’re together.”

thank You!Thousands of children in NY metro area schools, many of whom are in foster care or the child welfare system, are unlikely to graduate. Instability at home, a lack of support, having to relocate, failing schools, and more lead to this unfortunate reality. Programs like Teen Choice meet kids where they are and provide an entry point for us to provide support. You help us engage with inspiring students like Behirel to make sure they graduate and learn the skills they need to achieve their goals.
