Welcome to our John Taylor Hospice Annual Report. Packed within these few pages you will discover how we are making every moment matter for

hundreds of patients and their families. This year we have developed our links with our local community - attending and organising events, visiting schools and organising our first open day. We have increased our reach by extending our Hospice at Home service and launching a Friday Social Group. And we are generating more income - we opened our first shop in May in Erdington and our second in September in Wylde Green. The past year has seen us develop both our offer to volunteers and an exciting fundraising calendar with a range of events including our glorious Glitter Ball and the much-loved Light up a Life.As always, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has made this year so successful including our staff, volunteers and supporters.Penny Venables CEO

The last twelve months have seen huge changes here at John Taylor Hospice as, in April 2018, we became a charity. The move takes us back to our roots when

we were founded and funded by charitable donations here in the heart of Birmingham more than 100 years ago.As a charity we have a clear focus for the future of the hospice – to extend our care to more people, to ensure sustainable income and to be an essential part of our local community. There are challenges. Research undertaken by Hospice UK tell us that one in four people who need hospice care are not receiving it so we need to extend our services to ensure we are there for everyone. There is a constant need to fundraise to ensure we can retain the current services and to grow these services to meet the increased demand.Next year we will be celebrating our 110th birthday – an amazing achievement for our hospice – and we look forward to caring for our local families for the next century.Harry Turner Chairman of Trustees

Our new three year strategy sets out three goals:

Consolidate our current business The past year has seen us move from a community interest company to become a charity which gives us new opportunities for income generation. We have also invested time in our staff by launching a Wellbeing Programme and we have increased our community reach.

Extend clinical services We now run a 12-week Therapeutic Programme in our Living Well Centre, ensuring more people can access our services. We extended our Hospice at Home service into the evening so we can now support people in their homes until 8.30pm every evening. Maximise income The opening of our Erdington shop in May 2018 was the beginning of an ambitious retail strategy which will generate new income for our business. Since leaving the NHS in 2011 and becoming an independent charity, voluntary income has steadily grown year on year. Our Fundraising Team has put together an exciting diary of events (details of all of our events are on our website) and is busy looking for opportunities to build new relationships.
