Catch Music Annual Report 2017-18 (AGM) 3
Overview
Catch Music is a not for profit community music organisation that aims to connect people
through music. At its heart is the belief that group music-making is a uniquely powerful
means for bringing people together – using music to break down social barriers.
Catch Music provides opportunities for people all of ages, abilities and backgrounds to
attend weekly music sessions in the Perth metropolitan area and in a number of regional
areas. In the 12 months from July 2017 to June 2018 more than 200 people regularly
attended these sessions, and with generous support from Healthway and Lotterywest, the
groups also perform in public and promote the message of Act-Belong-Commit.
The 12 months to 30 June 2018 was a difficult one for Catch Music in which it had to deal
with declining income streams that impacted significantly on the financial position of the
organization. This resulted in a financial loss for the reporting period, which could not be
sustained. Consequently, Catch Music has had to reduce expenditure, primarily by closing
a number of sessions and reducing paid staff support, while increasing session fees.
These actions, while impacting on the potential reach and effectiveness of the Catch Music
programs, have been essential to ensure ongoing financial viability while the workload has
been taken up to a large extent by increased volunteer support, particularly by members of
the Catch Music Board.
Otherwise, Catch Music’s very survival is nevertheless a successful outcome that can’t be
underestimated in difficult financial and economic times. Catch Music continues to run
successful community music sessions that engage people of all ages, abilities and
backgrounds, connecting them through the powerful medium of music and encouraging
people to literally Act-Belong-Commit.
A summary of the year’s highlights are as follows:
• 250 people regularly attending Catch Music sessions;
• One session running in regional WA: Mandurah;
• New Mirrabooka session commenced with support from Act-Belong-Commit, the City
of Stirling and Balga Senior High School;
• New City Sounds session commenced with support from Lotterywest, St
Bartholomew’s House and the Beacon (Salvation Army). This session specifically
works with people from the Perth homeless community;
• Eight weekly sessions operating in metropolitan suburbs of Perth;
• 26 public performances by Catch Music groups around Perth, played in front of more
than 6,000 spectators;
• 11 interactive pop-up music sessions held with 474 participants and 4,590 spectators
in attendance;
• SuperJam VII event held at the newly opened Yagan Square in March 2018;
• Ongoing sponsorship from Healthway through the Act-Belong-Commit program.

Rocking ‘n’ Rolling: Catch Music Operations
Catch Music Sessions
The level of participation and attendance at Catch Music sessions remained relatively
stable, with an average of 160 people attending the Catch Music sessions every week,
with close to 250 people attending regularly. The Joondalup and Toodyay sessions were
forced to close during the course of the year due to low participant numbers and a lack of
financial support. As at 30 June 2018, there were nine sessions operating – seven in
Perth suburbs (Bayswater, Gosnells, Leederville, Mandurah, Midland, Mirrabooka and
Subiaco) and one in a regional centre - Mandurah. In addition the City Sounds project
commenced regular sessions at the beginning of 2018 for the homeless community at the
Beacon and St Bartholomew’s.
A brief summary of each Catch Music session is recorded below.
Bayswater
The Bayswater session continues to be one of the most strongly attended sessions led by
experienced Catch Music Facilitator (MF) Eduardo Cossio. The session includes many
people with disability, some highly skilled musicians and provides a high energy, positive
atmosphere, encouraging lots of dancing. Eduardo’s attention to all-inclusiveness is very
apparent with everyone given the opportunity to sing lead if wishing to do so. Everyone
has a specific role to play within the group creating a wonderful vibe full of community
spirt.

Fremantle
The Fremantle group attracts good numbers with new, dynamic MF, Jeremias Sosa, taking
charge of the group from Pete Flude, who took on the role of Catch Music Coordinator.
The Fremantle group has a strong community ethos, with participants staying behind after
the session to chat and socialize. As well as having an excellent mix of musical
backgrounds, participants are involved in the setting up of equipment, contributing
significantly to the group’s overall sound. Participants in this group often write their own
songs and, under the guidance of Jeremias, some participants have been busking
regularly, close to the session venue on weekends, learning skills to sustain themselves in
their own musical careers.

Act-Belong-Commit Gosnells
The Act-Belong-Commit Gosnells session continues to receive generous funding from
Healthway to cover immediate running costs. Catch Music is also most appreciative of the
ongoing, in-kind support from SoundLab for the use of their state-of-the-art facility. There
is often dancing at the session, with actions accompanying the lyrics and a real sense of
entertainment being an important factor in Gosnells performances. Members from the
session have excellent musicianship and are keen to assist other participants to learn new
skills. Camaraderie is plain to see at Gosnells sessions.

Joondalup
Due to declining attendance and lack of ongoing financial support the Joondalup session
was wound up at the end of 2017.
Leederville
The Leederville session continues to be a dynamic, well attended group led by Michael
Lane, regularly performing in public, putting on exhuberant, fun-filled shows. Every session
at Leederville has a strong sense of structure and direction with every participant striving
to perform to the best of their ability. Everyone is supportive and keen to encourage each
other to overcome challenges and learn new skills. Leederville gives everyone regular
opportunities to start songs and take lead vocals, empowering participants in a very
effective way. Keen to expand his knowledge and expertise and contribute further to the
group, long term Leederville participant, Devo McCall, is now a session volunteer and
sound tech/roadie for the group.
A particular highlight for the year was Leederville’s show stealing performance at the
Halloween Party (organized by Leederville MF, Mike Lane), with other highlights being
their energetic performances at the Leederville Carnival in December 2017 and the
Cambridge Street Festival in March 2018.

Mandurah
The Mandurah session commenced in July 2016, generously supported by a three year
funding commitment from the City of Mandurah and initial funding from Regional
Development Australia (RDA) Peel. During 2017-18 the group was led by MF, Terry
Glascoe, with great support from session volunteer Sharon Perry, before Terry handed
over to Chris Portlock. The Mandurah session has a tight sound obtained from the pure
joy of the community creating music together. Participants will often swap instruments
creating an inclusive atmosphere full of jokes and laughter. The group’s songbook is
diverse incorporating many styles of music. The group also writes some of its own music,
with songs capturing lyrics about personal challenges overcome with the assistance of
Catch Music.

Act-Belong-Commit Midland
The Act-Belong-Commit Midland group continues to attract good numbers with a diverse
mix of participants. The group put on a number of excellent public performances during
the year, most notably at the Catch Music Halloween Party gig and the very well attended
International Day of Disability event organised by the Ethnic Disability Advocacy Centre.
MF Joe Dignon led the group superbly during 2017 but following his return to England,
experienced Catch Music MF, Eduardo Cossio, took over in 2018. Ed ensures everyone
in the group has a chance to participate in the music and singing to the best of their ability.
The sessions are lively and dynamic interspersed with some original rap poetry from
participant Nando Scali with backing music improvised by the band members.

Act-Belong-Commit Mirrabooka
Mirrabooka is one of the most diverse sessions with a broad demographic and high level
of inclusiveness. New MF Nik Culum has taken to the facilitator role fantastically with a
calm disposition and ensuring everyone has an integral role to play in the group.
Mirrabooka’s demographic responded so well to RnB and Hip Hop that this musical genre
features prominently at the session. Nik has an expert knowledge of sound and recording
and has created professional backing for the group with effects and synth fitting the Hip
Hop style. Participants wear head mics and are encouraged to rap over loops creating a
fun atmosphere for everyone to enjoy regardless of their musical ability. Instruments are
swapped nearly every song, with participants assisting each other to learn new skills.
Mirrabooka also plays drum circle games to break the ice for new participants.
Based at the Balga Senior High School the session boasts the best sound studio and
equipment of all of Catch Music’s sessions.

Subiaco
An outstanding aspect of the Subiaco group is that under the guidance of WAPA award
winning musician, Eduardo Cossio, it writes many of its own original tunes. The group has
also performed in public on a regular basis during the year with particular highlights being
performances at the Halloween Party and RoyAl’s Chicken & Burgers in Wembley. The
Subiaco session also hosted this year’s ‘Winter Jam’ with a rapturous response. Carers
often participate as core members of the group, creating a great atmosphere and truly all-
inclusive experience.
Due to concerns about the financial viability of the group as a result of increased venue
hire fees, the session closed for Term 3 of 2018 but recommenced in Term 4, thanks to
generous support from the English Family Foundation. Together with an exciting, new
collaboration with the Subiaco Arts Centre, Subiaco has a strong future ahead with the
Arts Centre being an ideal venue for the group to stage live performances.

Toodyay
Like the Joondalup session, due to declining attendance and lack of ongoing financial
support, the Toodyay Catch Music session was forced to close at the beginning of 2018.
Attempts were made to reinvigorate the group and attract greater attendance, but this was
not achieved. During its two and half years the group certainly put on some excellent
public performances in the local community led by MF David Flowers and supported by
Session Volunteer Terry Flowers.
City Sounds (funded by LotteryWest)
Supported by LotteryWest, the City Sounds program commenced at the beginning of
2018. It provides weekly music sessions for the homeless community at St Bartholomew’s
(St Bart’s) and the Beacon (run by the Salvation Army). Participants have progressed
rapidly in confidence and ability after a very short period of time, to the extent of
performing a number of times. Many of the residents have been through extreme
situations and are continuously working through daily challenges. Thanks to City Sounds,
Catch Music has been able to assist in the rehabilitation process for many participants,
with music being a powerful means for re-engaging in the community. While Catch Music
has had no previous experience working with the homeless community, we were humbled
to discover that the individuals we worked with showed great sensitivity and compassion,
helping with equipment and assisting other participants.

Running of Catch Music Sessions
A key element of running successful Catch Music sessions hinges on the people who run
the sessions. Catch Music therefore takes considerable care in recruiting suitably skilled
Music Facilitators (MFs) who have the responsibility for leading the Catch Music sessions.
In particular, the MF leads the musical elements of a session by selecting an appropriate
repertoire of songs, based on the input of participants, arranging the songs and ensuring
all participants are engaged in a meaningful way. Catch Music also attempts to engage a
key Session Volunteer to assist the MF in the delivery of a session. The Session
Volunteer has particular responsibility for welcoming participants, ensuring everyone is
participating to the best of their ability and/or preference and assisting with the setting and
packing up of equipment.
The music facilitators are fundamental to the success of any Catch Music session and
Catch Music is most fortunate to have such a talented group of facilitators who combine
their amazing musical skills with a great capacity to include participants of all abilities and
ensure the ethos of Catch Music is maintained. Session Volunteers can also play a key
role, although Catch Music has experienced some difficulties securing Volunteers for all
sessions over the past year.
Interactive Pop-up Sessions
Following the success of interactive pop-up sessions held at Elizabeth Quay and the Perth
Cultural Centre in 2016, supported by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA),
there were plans to hold more MRA supported pop-up sessions at Yagan Square during
2018. Unfortunately, this did not eventuate, with only one such event taking place.
However, Catch Music did, nevertheless put on another ten pop-up sessions during the
reporting period with highlights being the one session run at Yagan Square, plus sessions
held at the Homeless Connect event at Russell Square in November 2017 and a number
of sports inclusion days and two street parties in Fremantle.
All pop-up sessions were superbly facilitated by Catch Music Coordinator, Pete Flude with
amazing energy and enthusiasm, encouraging great participation by onlookers and
passers-by. All up, the 11 pop-up sessions saw some 474 people actively participating
and 4,590 spectators in attendance. Catch Music is hoping to increase the number of pop-
up sessions held during 2018-19.

Act-Belong-Commit Super Jam VII
Catch Music’s sevent annual Act-Belong-Commit SuperJam was held at the recently
opened Yagan Square in Perth in March 2018 with sponsorship support from Healthway
and the City of Perth. The event was an outstanding success, attracting a lot of interest
from pedestrians passing by, many of whom stopped to listen, dance and join in the fun.
All Catch Music groups put on terrific performances and the impromptu jam session was a
particular highlight of outstanding musicianship and entertainment. The day wouldn’t have
been possible without the tireless efforts of Program Coordinator, Pete Flude, supported
by an enthusiastic group of volunteers on the day.

Act-Belong-Commit Winter Jam Events
This year’s Winter Jam concerts saw a series of three concerts held in different session
venues. The most popular and dynamic of these was the Subiaco event, which included
terrific performances by the Leederville, Bayswater and Subiaco groups held at the
Shenton Park Community Centre. All three groups put on great performances, although
the Leederville group led the way and had everyone up and dancing to a collection of
memorable tunes.

Halloween Party
Another highlight for the year was the Halloween Party gig held on 28 October 2018. The
gig was the brain-child of Leederville MF, Mike Lane, and proved to be an extremely
popular event. The Leederville, Subiaco and Midland groups all put on outstanding
performances, with participants dressed in their Halloween outfits. Many of the audience
were also dressed up suitably for the occasion and the Shenton Park Community Centre
was specially decked out as a dark haunted house, complete with cobwebs and hundreds
of vampire bats. Prizes were awarded for the best dressed Halloween outfits and there
were many tricks and treats to please everyone with Catch Music Ambassador, Dillip
Parekh, doing a wonderfully, creepy, scary job of MC’ing the event with suspense and
thrills in abundance.

Money, Money, Money … Fundraising & Finances
Overview of Financial Situation
As noted in the overview, 2017-18 proved to be a very difficult year financially for Catch
Music with a significant decline in income, resulting in a large deficit recorded for the year.
This was largely attributable to anticipated income from the Metropolitan Redevelopment
Authority (MRA) for planned pop-up sessions not being realized and a large drop in
session grants. As well, efforts to increase income in other areas, including a number of
grant applications, largely proved to be unsuccessful. The MRA income was anticipated
from February/March 2018, so Catch Music had too little time to adjust expenditure when it
became apparent the income would not be forthcoming. Consequently, Catch Music has
responded by reducing expenditure and increasing session fees from July 2018, to ensure
no further loss is incurred in the coming year.
The Details
Despite the fact that expenditure for the year was at the lowest level since 2013-14, as can
be seen in Table 1, due to the sharp drop in income received for the year, Catch Music
made a loss of $36,969. Fortunately, Catch Music had sufficient reserves to carry the loss
for the 2017-18 financial year, but clearly the loss is unsustainable and steps have been
taken to ensure expenditure does not exceed income during 2018-19. Steps taken include
closing a number of sessions that were financially unsustainable, reducing paid staff hours
and increasing session fees.
Table 1
The most notable features of the 2017-18 financial statements, from a revenue
perspective, were as follows:
On the positive side:
• A significant increase in funding from Healthway as part of Catch Music’s Act-Belong-
Commit sponsorship; and
• An almost 20 per cent increase in income from session fees.
Both of which were more than outweighed by:
• A sharp drop in income from local government and regional grants of almost $20,000;
• A very large drop in trading income as a result of the planned pop-up sessions with
MRA not materializing;
• A drop in funding from Lotterywest, with the Project Grant from the previous two years
having been fully expended, countered to some extent by funding for the City Sounds
project; and
• No further funding from Disability Services, following the completion of the VisAbility
grant.

Table 2
On the expenditure side there was a significant decrease in wage costs as Catch Music
scaled back income associated with the LotteryWest grant. Wages expenses fell by 23%
from $71,649 in 2016-17 to $55,008 in 2017-18. Other expenditure was also contained or
reduced for the most part, with the exception of bookkeeping fees, which were previously
covered in the administration fees paid to Inclusion WA - refer to Table 3.

Healthway
Under its Healthway sponsorship agreement Catch Music is now supported to the amount
of $41,800 per year from 2017-18 for two years, with a potential to extend this to a third
year. The Healthway sponsorship is provided to Catch Music to promote the Act-Belong-
Commit mentally healthy message. This represented a significant increase in the
sponsorship compared with previous years, indicating Healthway’s high regard for Catch
Music’s promotion of the Act-Belong-Commit message. It is also a tremendous boon to
Catch Music and significantly improves its potential viability.
The sponsorship is made up of the following elements:
1. Exclusive Naming Rights sponsorship for the Gosnells, Midland and Mirrabooka
Catch Music sessions;
2. Exclusive Naming Rights for Super Jam each year;
3. Exclusive Naming Rights for Winter Concert series;
4. Principal sponsor of Catch Music interactive pop-up sessions – 10 per year;
5. Principal sponsor of Catch Music public performances – 30 to be held by all Catch
Music sessions per year.
The sponsorship is based on two elements: healthy participation and audience reach, such
that Catch Music is required to achieve specific benchmarks in terms of the number of
people participating in sessions and performances, as well as the numbers of spectators
who watch Catch Music sessions and performances.
The overall objectives for the Healthway funding are for Catch Music to:
• Increase awareness of the Act-Belong-Commit message among the target
audience.
• Increase the target audiences’ knowledge and understanding of Act-Belong-Commit.
• Encourage behaviour change leading to good health.
• Promote and maintain all Catch Music events as smoke free.
• Promote Healthway as the organisation sponsoring the project and promoting Act-Belong-Commit.
As well, key messages that Catch Music are promoting include:
• Keeping mentally healthy is just as important as staying physically healthy, and it’s as easy as A-B-C; and
• Being active, having a sense of belonging, and having a purpose in life all contribute to happiness and good mental health and wellbeing.
Given the values and purpose of Catch Music, these objectives and key messages are an
ideal fit for Catch Music and the organisation very much looks forward to continuing to
promote these important health messages to the community over the coming years.
Catch Music fell just short of reaching all the Act-Belong-Commit participation and
audience reach targets for 2017-18, as shown in Table 4. This was actually an
exceptional outcome, given that Catch Music had anticipated that it would be able to
secure a series of some 20 or more pop-up sessions at Yagan Square, with support from
MRA, but which did not go ahead.

Chart 1 highlights the changes in Catch Music participation and audience reach over the
past five years, showing a decrease in 2017-18, due principally to planned pop-up

Session Funding
Obtaining ongoing funding for sessions remains a constant challenge. As noted earlier, a
key factor in Catch Music recording a deficit for the year was the large drop in session
grants and funding. Despite attempts to secure further income from a number of local
governments, Catch Music was unable to secure any new funding in this regard, and the
only session currently funded by a local government is Mandurah, which has committed to
providing three years of funding. The City of Subiaco provided $1,750 for the City of
Subiaco to the end of 2017 and the City of Stirling contributed $2,000 to the Mirrabooka
session for the year.
Catch Music is especially grateful, therefore, to Healthway’s Act-Belong-Commit
sponsorship of the Gosnells, Mirrabooka and Midland sessions and, looking ahead to the
2018-19 year, the English Family Foundation, for support of the Subiaco session.
Table 5 lists the session funding attracted for each group, with a comparison provided
between 2016-17 and 2017-18.
Table 5
As well as the funding provided for these sessions, Catch Music is able to benefit from in-
kind funding, chiefly through the provision of free or subsidised venues at eight of the ten
venues used as shown in Table 6.

With a Little Help from Our Friends
Partnerships with Other Organisations
The Catch Music Board has continued to pursue opportunities to partner with other
organisations, most notably local governments, but also a range of other organisations to
enable more sustainable community music sessions. The full list of partnerships is as
follows:
Corporate/Organisational Partners:
• Healthway Act-Belong-Commit
• Lotterywest
Community Music Session Partners:
• City of Bayswater – Bayswater session
• City of Mandurah – Mandurah session
• City of Stirling – Mirrabooka session
• Balga Senior High School - Mirrabooka session
• City of Subiaco – Subiaco session
• City of Swan & Mundaring Arts Centre – Midland session
• SoundLab Gosnells – Gosnells session
• Act-Belong-Commit – Gosnells, Midland and Mirrabooka sessions
Catch Music is especially grateful to the generosity of all these organisations for their
financial and in-kind support.
… slipping into the future: Looking Ahead
With the difficult financial situation and economic climate, finding new ways to generate
revenue, reduce expenditure wherever possible and maintain a financially viable
organization will continue to be a priority in 2018-19 and beyond. The Catch Music Board
has been exploring the potential for Catch Music to generate and earn its own income from
“trading activities” such as Catch Music tuition and children’s programs, as well as
developing a sponsorship strategy. As well, the Board continues to pursue other grants
and sponsorship in the arts sector and elsewhere. Meanwhile, all expenditure is being
carefully scrutinized with Catch Music having to rely even more heavily on volunteers to
pick up some of the tasks which can no longer be afforded, including such roles as
bookkeeping, web and IT support, promotion and marketing, etc. There will need to be a
particular focus on the financial viability of each session, although increases in session
fees have certainly improved the bottom line for all sessions, with no drop off in
participation experienced to date.
On a positive note, Catch Music has attracted funding from the City of Armadale for a new
session to commence there in 2019.
Meanwhile, Catch Music continues to be very thankful for Healthway’s ongoing and
generous sponsorship support.

Hearts of Gold: Staff, Volunteers & the Board
Catch Music Coordination - 2017
From July 2017 Pete Flude and Jessie Edmeades were appointed to share the role of
Operations and Events and Fundraising coordination. Both Pete and Jess brought with
them considerable musical skill and talent, together with an amazing level of enthusiasm,
experience, and wealth of knowledge and ideas to the roles. Unfortunately, Jess was only
with Catch Music for six months, before returning to the Eastern States, but made an
outstanding contribution in her short time with Catch Music. Consequently, Pete took up
the role in a close to full-time capacity, admirably picking up most of the role that Jess had
been undertaking.
Originally from England, Pete was well known for his electric performances on Australia’s
‘West TV’ in 2014 and regular showcases at the Ellington Jazz club with members of the
WA Academy of Performing Arts. Pete says that “Music is a form of communication that
goes beyond language. Catch Music is breaking down those social barriers and making
Perth a better place.”
Pete also came with considerable experience of Catch Music, having been the Music
Facilitator for the Gosnells and Fremantle sessions for the previous two years. Pete has
brought immense enthusiasm and commitment to the position and Catch Music has
benefited greatly from his contribution.

Funding Coordinator
Following Jessie Edmeade’s departure, Peter Bielski was appointed for a six month contract
in March 2018 in an attempt to secure grant and fundraising income for Catch Music. In an
extremely tough environment for not-for-profits, Peter brought immense amounts of energy
and hard work to the role, with some successes in securing some small grants with funding
for a new Armadale session (commencing 2019) being the most notable. While some
applications are still pending, Catch Music have been unable to retain Peter’s services due
to the financial position.
Catch Music Facilitators
Catch Music sessions depend overwhelmingly on the professional and energetic
enthusiasm of its Music Facilitators. All are very skilled musicians who share their love of
music with the people attending each session and in doing so bring much joy and fulfillment
to participants, extending their musical skills and performance standards, all the while,
enabling Catch Music participants to feel welcomed, included and connected to their
community. For many participants, Catch Music sessions are the highlight of their week,
and this is only possible because of the amazing efforts of our Music Facilitators week in,
week out. A big, big thank you to all of them.

Catch Music Ambassador
An Indian Irishman who calls Australia home, Fremantle singer/songwriter Dilip Parekh is
more widely known as the front man for popular dance band, Dilip n the Davs. Dilip sings
his heart out, as he always does, with passion, sincerity and style and has been
generously supporting Catch Music for a number of years now. Dilip has MC’ed many
SuperJams and other Catch Music events, including last year’s Halloween gig. He often
turns up at Catch Music sessions and gigs to provide his own insights and experiences
into music making and always brings with him so much joy and enthusiasm to all the
events he attends. Dilip continues to be a most generous Ambassador for Catch Music.

Volunteers Support
A key aspect of Catch Music is about participation. “Get involved” was a key slogan of
Catch Music in its early years, and 2017-18 again saw invaluable contributions from
volunteers. Catch Music enjoys excellent volunteer involvement at most of its sessions,
not just from the formal volunteer positions such as the Session Volunteers, but many
other family members, carers and volunteers who simply want to share in the fun and joy
of the sessions. Many also help out at public performances by the groups as well as at
major Catch Music events like the Super Jam. Catch Music is extremely grateful for the
contributions of all these wonderful and generous individuals.
Taking into account carers who accompany participants with a disability, approximately
3,240 hours of support were provided to enable the running of Catch Music sessions
during 2017-18. These support hours have an approximate dollar value of $64,800. There
are, in addition, the contributions of Catch Music Board members, resulting in an estimated
total volunteer contribution of 5,040 hours per year at an estimated value of $154,800,
which is almost equivalent to Catch Music’s total income and expenditure over the past
year. There is no doubt that Catch Music could not survive without this marvelous support.

Acknowledgements
As the Chairperson I am extremely grateful for the passionate and dedicated support of all
my fellow Board members, paid staff, Music Facilitators and volunteers of Catch Music.
The Catch Music Board is a small but dedicated team that is helping to steer Catch Music
through difficult periods of transition, particularly as the organization continues to adjust to
an environment without the significant Lotterywest funding of previous years. I am very
grateful to current Board members Will Axten (deputy Chair), who stepped up as Acting
Chair while I was on leave during June/July 2018, Rambo Ramdianee (Treasurer), Grace
King, Quintin Le Roux and Corinne Mercer for their wonderful support, enthusiasm and
professional contributions during the year in helping to keep Catch Music on track during
difficult times. Grace King resigned from the Board in June 2018 but we have since picked
up two new Board members, in Sarah Melville-Maguire and Neil Brodie, who have brought
tremendous new enthusiasm, ideas, skills and talents to the Board.

Appendix 6: Strategic Vision & Objectives
Connecting People Through Music
Our key signature: what is Catch Music?
Catch Music is a network of people who love to make music. At its heart is the belief that
group music-making is a uniquely powerful means for bringing people together, creating
opportunities for social interaction, and building a more inclusive and connected community.
Playing in tune: what we value
• Participation: We encourage participation from people of all backgrounds and abilities.
• Respect: We respect all people and value their unique contributions.
• Relationships: We recognise the role that music can play in bringing people together, building
relationships and fostering creativity.
Keeping the beat: what’s important to us
1. Running regular, vibrant music sessions in the Perth metropolitan area and in a number of
rural areas across WA.
2. Encouraging people of all backgrounds and abilities to play music in a welcoming and
inclusive community.
3. Providing opportunities for meaningful relationships to form between community members
who may be otherwise unlikely to meet and interact.
4. Fostering creativity, fulfillment, challenge, achievement and belonging in everyone who
participates.
5. Being dynamic, fun, engaging and musically rewarding.
Rocking ‘n’ rolling: how we operate
Each Catch Music session is attended by up to 25 to 30 people who gather to make music
under the leadership of a skilled Music Facilitator, supported by a Session Volunteer. The
Music Facilitator, Session Volunteer and group members work together to create stimulating
sessions that are inclusive, welcoming and musically rewarding.
Management of these sessions is the responsibility of the Catch Music Program Coordinator,
overseen by the Board of Catch Music.
The Catch Music Board is voluntary, and comprised of professionals working in disability and
health services, management, education, information technology and the music industry.
Catch Music Annual Report 2017-18 (AGM) 41
Appendix 7: Catch Music History History Never Repeats: the Story of Catch Music
Catch Music first came into being as a result of the imagination and determination of Tim Roberton,
who was keen to combine his interest in music with a desire to provide social/recreational
opportunities for people with disability. He quickly came up with the name and incorporated Catch
Music as a non-profit association in May 2007.
The first attempts to include people with disability in a music program resulted in a partnership with
the School of Music at UWA with music students volunteering to provide one-on-one tuition for
people with disabilities. The first groups ran with about 10 music student volunteers pairing up with
10 people with disabilities, and culminating in a group gathering at the end of the evening. Another
idea was to organise social events with group outings to music concerts.
These UWA sessions proved difficult to maintain over a period of time and the social events were
poorly attended. So another idea was developed, to create an open community jam session where
anyone from the local community could turn up and play music, with the support of an experienced
musician to facilitate the sessions.
In October and November 2008 two sessions were started in Melville and Leederville respectively.
The Leederville session attracted good numbers from the start and has continued to flourish ever
since. Melville took a bit longer to establish itself and after a break was re-launched in June 2009
with more success this time. Since that time these community music sessions have grown to the
point where Catch Music now operates nine sessions around Perth and two in regional Western
Australia.
In addition, Catch Music ran sessions specifically aimed at children between 2009 and 2011, but
with relatively low numbers these proved difficult to sustain.
With the support of a grant from the Community Arts Network WA (CANWA) Catch Music produced
a CD in 2009 featuring eleven different community music groups from across Perth performing
covers of eleven different songs that had “changed people’s lives”. The project culminated in a CD
Launch on 6th December in South Perth.
Other activities of Catch Music included two training camps run in 2011 and 2012 and a number of
Super Jam events in which all Catch Music groups came together to perform, the first being held in
2010, and the most recent in December 2014 at Hyde Park in Perth.
At the beginning of 2011 Catch Music was able to employ staff for the first time following the success of a major program development grant submission to Lotterywest. In 2014, Catch Music secured three year funding from Healthway and major project funding from Lotterywest to expand into regional areas of WA. The first regional session, in Tom Price, commenced in April 2015, followed by a second in Toodyay in July 2015. The Tom Price session subsequently closed, but a new regional session was established in Mandurah.
Also of note has been the growing popularity and success of public performances by Catch Music groups, sometimes performed in front of hundreds and thousands of people and including performances at Parliament House before the Premier, Colin Barnett, a rally in support of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, headlining the Community Services Excellence Awards in 2014 and many other notable community events such as the Beaufort Street Festival and the Light Up Leederville Carnival.
Catch Music Annual Report 2017-18 (AGM) 42
In June 2016 Catch Music ran the first of its interactive pop-up music sessions with a series of such sessions run at Elizabeth Quay and the Perth Cultural Centre, with the support of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority and the City of Perth. These proved to be very popular and very soon Catch Music was receiving requests to perform similar sessions in a range of metropolitan and regional centres, including Mirrabooka, Armadale and Port Hedland.
