Foreword

ForewordAnn James, Acting Chair

Welcome to our third Annual Report of the NHS South West Leadership Academy, this will give you a full account of the work that we have done as an Regional Leadership Academy throughout 2015/16.

On the 8th October 2015 we had the pleasure of welcoming colleagues across the South West to our Annual General meeting where we discussed and sculpted the future leadership landscape by creating new and efficient ways of taking the leadership agenda forward.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming Karen Lynas, previously NHS Leadership Academy and our keynote Lorraine Heggessey to the South West region. They helped set the scene for what was an inspiring and motivating day, filled with great questioning and exploration of the future developments.

December 2015 saw the release of the NHS shared planning guidance 16/17 – 20/21 which outlined the need for Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STP) locally.

STPs will be pivotal in ensuring that health and care services are built around the needs of local populations. The importance of leadership during this time nationally and regionally will be even more significant than before.

As we progress into 2016/17 we will all be responding to the challenges of a changing environment for health and social care and we look forward to working with you and supporting you and your colleagues in the new financial year.

Welcome

WelcomeChristina Quinn, Director

Our purpose is to develop innovative and specialised leadership programmes which ultimately develop staff to improve patient experience, clinical outcomes and staff satisfaction.

In the South West, we are privileged to work with some fantastic colleagues who are vital in building our leadership community by feeding back the local need to allow us to respond with specialised development offers to suit individual, team and system needs.

We have produced unique and bespoke leadership development opportunities to the South West region. Opportunities such as Leadership for Improving Frontline Talent and our Organisational Development programme both of which we commissioned for the second year due to regional demand.

Looking back on 2015/16 one personal highlight would be our Regional Awards Ceremony which took place in November 2015, as many of you are aware the South West Leadership Recognition Awards are a celebration of the achievements and successes of the most valued and hardworking leaders within Health and Social Care sector.

We believe that it is important to take the time out to celebrate and value both individual and collective contributions and to highlight the work that is being done to improve health and wellbeing for local populations.

We would like to say congratulations to everyone who had been nominated for an award and a thank you for all the fantastic work you have done over the past year.

As we start planning 2016/17 system leadership, as we all know, will be a main focal point. We will be adapting development offers by creating opportunities that are unique and meet local needs. We will also be keeping our traditional offers such as Master Classes, Coaching and Mentoring programmes and our flagship programme Leadership Live!

We look forward to working with you next year,

Spotlight on: Our Landscape

Spotlight on:Our LandscapeWe are strong advocates of partnership and collaboration here at the NHS South West Leadership Academy and have extremely close working relationships with both Health Education England and the NHS Leadership Academy.

As you will have heard, there are some changes on the horizon for both of these organisations nationally, with NHS Leadership Academy being integrated within Health Education England as of April 2016.

At this moment in time, we are unsure of the governance and structure around this, or what it will mean for ourselves or colleagues as Local Delivery Partners. However, whilst we find ourselves in this changeable time, we are excited by the possibilities that it opens to us as an organisation, to grow and really focus on our strengths and how we will continue to deliver on the mandate that you, our stakeholders, set out for us.

We continue to work with both our AHSN partners ensuring we are making the best of the resources we have. We are particularly excited about working on the improvement science programme and the leadership components of that.

Our key focuses and priorities this year are on:

• Future proofing leadership to deliver the 5YFV

• Placed-based Leadership

• Sustainability & Transformation Plan footprints

• Systems Leadership

We will meet the needs and challenges of our stakeholders in each of these areas, in an effective and timely manner. Being governed independently, we are able to take a flexible and innovative approach to the delivery of leadership development, where others can’t.

Our biggest passion is creating capacity and capability in the region so that our stakeholders can be self-sufficient and we are able to do this by having an acute sense of the political contextual environment locally, regionally and internationally.

We also pride ourselves at being experts in understanding our stakeholders and their organisations and this means we can work with them differently. We believe through the expertise, creativity and commitment we have in the team, region and our partnership nationally and internationally we are able to create innovative solutions for the development needs of our leadership community.

We look forward to the forthcoming year, and working with you, to shape the leadership landscape.

Spotlight on: Our Values

Spotlight on:Our ValuesNHS South West Leadership Academy aspire to model the behaviours that we promote in order to foster a professional and collective leadership style, based on trust, honesty, respect and responsibility. We will be explicit in communicating these beliefs and courageously challenge where these values are deficient.

We seek to understand and respond to the needs of our evolving leadership landscape and create partnerships which are inclusive to the collaborative system approach. We will continue to contribute to a health care landscape of which we can be proud and trust to operate in the interests of the public.

We engage and collaborate with colleagues and partners through leadership development programmes, drawing upon their diverse experience to innovate creatively in response to current local contexts - without exposing patients to unnecessary risk.

Whilst being empathetic, non-judgemental and mindful of others will listen to individuals and organisations to gather information about local needs, best practice and the impact of good leadership, and communicate this with colleagues and partners to inform strategy and priorities.

Working flexibly in a fast-moving transitional period we strategically coordinate guidance and solutions at a local level in an effort to create consistent, effective and efficient system leadership. And most importantly we value our stakeholders and continuously ask for feedback to make sure that we get it right.

The Leadership Leads Network comprises of representatives from our South West health and social care organisations and members of Health Education England, working across the South West.

The Network promotes, initiates, supports and monitors Leadership Development activity throughout the NHS South West Leadership Academy, providing a forum for the sharing of innovation and best practice. It endeavours to facilitate the achievement of excellent standards of leadership and fully populate a dynamic ‘talent pool’ of staff who are keen and motivated to employ their knowledge and skills within the South West.

The responsibilities of the Network include:

• Sharing and promoting, innovation and best practice in the delivery of leadership development opportunities throughout the South West.

• Identifying, where possible, consistent standards, competences and performance management criteria.

• Exploring new initiatives, both national and local, which will drive or support the leadership development process.

• Identifying funding opportunities to assist with Leadership development activities.

• Linking with local Colleges of Further Education, Institutions of Higher Education, Business Schools and other outside bodies.

There is a vibrant south west OD network that brings together those who are working in the field of OD, change and transformation. This might be OD and Leadership Leads, HRDs, Service and Transformation Leads as well as clinical colleagues all striving to develop and ensure their organisations are as effective as they can be.

The network is an opportunity to share regional and national experiences, knowledge and good practice as well as focusing and learning on key areas.

We aim to both share the wisdom in the group and bring in outside expertise and leaders in the field of OD and Transformation. We aim to encourage collaboration, networking and peer support. We also provide opportunities and innovation, to grow internal regional capacity outside of organisational boundaries.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every member for their continued support and commitment to the NHS South West Leadership Academy.

Spotlight on: Leadership

Spotlight on:LeadershipWhat is leadership? It is a simple question which can be hard to define and we were intrigued to know, so with this in mind, we asked our alumni, and this is what we heard...

And for those of you who were wondering, leadership to us is:

“A process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.” Kevin Kruse, Author

“Leading by example,

remember respect is earned and

always be a role model”

“It is about leading

uncertainty”

“Real leaders are ordinary people with

extraordinary determination.”

“Empowering others to

achieve their best”

“it is about one person influencing another”

“Passionate, fearless,

careless and selfless”

“Forward thinking”

The Leadership for Improving Front-line Talent (LIFT) programme was developed by the NHS South West Leadership in order to better equip clinical and non – clinical leaders with the ability, skills and confidence to meet individual and team goals in respect of leading high quality and compassionate care. The overall aims for the programme were:

• To increase clinical leadership capacity to drive self-effectiveness and transformation to improve patient care.

• Develop leaders with the skills and vision to work at systems level, in multi-disciplinary teams and across organisational boundaries.

• To increase personal impact and influencing skills across all organisational levels.

There is overwhelming support and enthusiasm from the 145 LIFT participants who have accessed the programme so far:

The programme, which runs over two years has so far had 22 participants take part. The outputs so far have been extremely positive and our initial fundings have been published in a recent HSJ article which you can view at www.southwestleadership.nhs.uk/glasslift

We continue to work on the inclusion agenda and with the success of this programme develop further bespoke offers.

77% of the NHS workforce is female, yet only 37% of board roles are held by women. The situation is that there are not enough women in leadership.

77%

Increasing diversity and the number of women in leadership in particular makes good business sense for all organisations. Yet despite the drive for more women on boards and gender diversity initiatives in many organisations, progress is slow. The NHS Five Year Forward View (October 2014) “backs diverse solutions and local leadership.” To achieve diverse solutions NHS South West Leadership Academy recognised the need to develop a more inclusive culture of leadership.

The Glass Lift programme was therefore created here to address this. Our aim was to develop the leadership capability of talented women, drive towards a more inclusive leadership culture and a larger and more secure pipeline of female talent leading to better gender balance at senior level in the NHS.

In the Wings is a stimulating programme designed to help leaders make the most of their personal communication skills and has been created to develop NHS ambassadors. It works as a blended programme where leaders are able to explore their mission, de ne their leadership narrative and then build a set of personal tools that dramatically enhances their impact as a leader.

Participants can raise the profile both of their organisation and the wider NHS, creating engagement, promoting understanding, and opening up opportunities. In the Wings reaches far beyond standard media training, to develop a deeper understanding of all aspects of communication and presenting, developing personal style and building confidence.

The programme has already proven to be a life-changing experience for the 10 participants who undertook the development earlier this year, in terms of confidence, effectiveness and enhanced leadership skills.

What impact have you seen so far since completing the programme?

“I have used many of the tools from high level interaction with Executive Strategic groups, 1:1s, and everyday work activities. It has been very empowering and refreshing and has shifted me from thinking to doing also. Has empowered me to ditch the corporate shoulder pads and be much more me in communication delivery!”

“This is the best leadership development I have experienced yet, on lots of levels. It felt very personalised and sincere even in a group situation.”

“This was an amazing opportunity to share professional issues and focus on my priorities. Initially I was sceptical and thought why I would need an hour to talk to one of the course leaders. In fact it was one of the most memorable and influential elements. I felt privileged to have someone focus and be interested in me. There was genuine enquiry and desire to help. My coach was insightful with ability and skill to identify the areas for my focus within a few minutes.”

“It is vital staff have the ability to deliver their messages, in a way to be heard and understood. This programme focuses on strengthening our personal abilities to communicate these messages.”

Spotlight on: Our Future

We are delighted to once again be running the NHS South West Leadership recognition Awards 2016 - it truly is a highlight of our year.

At a time of such unprecedented change for the Health and Social Care system, when leaders are working in an environment of complexity and ambiguity with immense operational and financial pressures, it is hugely important to take the time out to celebrate and value individual and collective contribution, highlighting the work that is being done to improve health and well being for local populations across the South West.

NHS South West LeadershipRecognition Awards 2016

These awards celebrate leaders at all levels and across all professions, regardless of position or level of professional qualification - just those who have ultimately improved people’s health and the public’s experience of health and social care, and who we are truly proud to work alongside.

This years ceremony will take place on 11th November 2016 in Bristol. We hope to see many of you there, supporting and championing the south west as ever.
