Halo Award Recognizes Our Amazing Volunteers!

In 2014, Families Forward received the “Halo Award” from the Carl & Roberta Deutsch Foundation honoring Carol Pukli for 25 years of dedicated volunteer service. All our remarkable volunteers bring their heart and soul every day to assist struggling families. More than 2,300 volunteers provided nearly 17,500 hours of service during the year.

Creating a Legacy for a Brighter Future!

Families Forward is proud to celebrate and recognize the members of our Legacy Society. These generous supporters have committed to the long-term future of helping families with a planned gift. In 2014, we were honored to receive both our first major bequest and our first designated endowment, extending the reach of Families Forward to future generations.

Dear Friends of Families Forward,

At Families Forward, we see vulnerable families in crisis every day. The most impacted are the children who need to be protected and nurtured from the debilitating effects of losing their home. These families face severe and often unexpected challenges, from the single parent escaping domestic violence or overwhelmed by a difficult divorce, to families facing long-term illness or job loss. They are pushed beyond their financial limits and suddenly find themselves homeless.

Thanks to support from generous contributors like you, safety-net services were provided to nearly 8,000 low-income children and adults last year. The most devastated of these families escaped homelessness through our housing program, but thousands of others were served through our food pantry, community counseling services, career coaching and tenant workshops or received in-kind donations for school or the holidays.

Last year more than 90% of the families graduating from our housing program secured permanent housing and greater stability for their children. For 30 years, Families Forward has remained committed to our mission to reduce homelessness in Orange County and help families in need become self-sufficient. We are deeply grateful for your support in helping us serve these families. Working together, we can transform the life of a desperate family to one of confidence and success.

Sincerely,

Ryan Warne-McGraw President, Board of Directors

IMAGINE WONDERING WHERE YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN WILL SLEEP TONIGHT.

– 30,500 Orange County children are homeless or unstably housed.*

– A minimum wage worker must work 126 hours a week to afford an average one-bedroom apartment in Orange County.**

– For low income families, median income has declined 10% while rents have increased 19% since 2000.***

CHILDREN STRUGGLE WHEN THEY GO TO BED HUNGRY!

– 1 in 5 children living in Orange County are “food insecure” and are often hungry.

– 250,408 children, 50% of Orange County’s students, qualify for free and reduced-price lunch, a strong indicator of poverty.*

“Bill” And His 5 Children Soon Found Themselves Living Out Of His Vehicle.

After a long and difficult battle, “Bill” lost his wife to cancer. Overwhelmed, he needed to figure out how to be a single dad and the sole provider for his daughter and 4 sons. Having used all of the family’s resources to care for his ailing wife and cover costly medical treatments, Bill and his 5 children soon found themselves living out of his vehicle.

This is when Bill contacted Families Forward and moved his family into one of our interim homes. He began his journey back to self-sufficiency, and after working with a Career Coach, found employment at a local retail store. A short time later, Bill was promoted to a management position. With guidance from his case manager, Bill applied and was accepted to move into a 3 bedroom affordable housing unit! Bill’s children are so excited to settle into a permanent home and hang their family pictures on the walls.

Due to the high cost of basic living needs in Orange County, including rent, transportation and childcare, families can suddenly lose their housing with any

unforeseen expense or disruption. A job loss, sudden illness or rent increase can often push a family beyond their financial limits and result in them losing their home.
