AlphaBet Club's Educational Infrastructure Projects in Cambodia, India, and Laos educated 749 childrenwhile providing 63,790 nutritious meals in 2013...
What we do
AlphaBet Club has partnered with Building Blocks, a strong
charitable foundation, located in Bangalore, India. We work together to achieve common goals for the open-ing and operation of new schools next to large urban slums in Bangalore.
We have more than 238 stu-dents enrolled in school. We pro-
vide classes for children ages 4 to 5, six days a week for a full 11-month school year from June through April. Classes run Monday through Friday from 9 am until 4 pm with a half-day on Saturdays.
Class instruction is in English, where children are taught sight-reading, simple arithmetic, writing anD motor skills development. Additionally, they engage in extracurricular activities such as drama, art and mu-sic. Every day in school, children are provided with a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snacks. School materi-als are provided free of cost to the students and their families.
Our schools have 8 full time staff members: 5 teach-ers, a cleaner, a principal and a cook. Additionally, there is a team of support staff aiding with the school operations, consisting of teacher trainers, an accoun-tant or financial assistance, IT, communications, social workers and more.

63,790 nutritious meals served to students in 2013 at the Edelweiss
and Freesia Schools, free of charge. These meals are breakfast and lunch, Monday to Friday, with breakfast only being served on Satur-day. Emphasis is for children to get nutrients and vitamins needed during this important early development phase as many new stu-dents are diagnosed with malnutrition that could stunt their growth. The emphasis is on providing the children with the required nutri-ents and vitamins during this important early development phase, as many new students are diagnosed with malnutrition that could stunt their growth. After School Program attendees also received one meal daily at Edelweiss.
Medical checkups were performed at the school with medication provided,
for free, for ailments encountered.
The children in our schools, are typi-cally 1 of 2 or 3 kids of parents ages
20-25. The average family income is around €140 a month for a fam-ily of 5 to 6 living in a 9m2 sized home with asbestos roofing and no running water. The children are typically malnourished, underweight and need to be checked for parasites. Parents are mostly illiterate, migrant laboring workers coming from rural villages for work. They don’t speak the local language of Bangalore (Kannada), nor Hindi or English, but only speak the language of their region (Telegu, Tamil).
Focuses on phonics

Lessons, educational songs on computer.Computers in each classroom aiding with lessons
It is practiced daily. Motor development skills through play is important for first years. Gender, race and class equality are key components of character development.
Daily usage of School Play Areas
Children’s Day, India Day, Holi, Ugadi, Diwali, Valentine’s Day, Christmas
School uniforms, materials and books provided to all children, free of charge
As many of our students have never left the slum, riding in a moving vehicle, elevator or escalator, our excursions to the zoo, parks and donated res-taurant visits are a highlight for many.

The third Educational Infrastructure project that AlphaBet Club funded was in November 2010 the Edelweiss School of Building Blocks in Bangalore, India. Since the start Alpha-Bet Club has also been funding the operational expenses of running the school. The first two Educational Infrastructure projects that AlphaBet Club funded were with Room to Read Foundation:
2010 Library for the (see picture on the left) Hun Sen Koang Kang Primary School, Cambodia
2009 Primary School: 172 Children Phiangdokkham, Laos
2009 Donations of toys to 25 school children Goa, India
2009 10 years of school for a girl in Vietnam
AlphaBet Club not only funds Educational Infrastructure projects, but also actively works with local implementa-tion partners to aid in building out their capacities and in the overall sustainability of our joint project and their organization.
This is done by daily interaction with the partner to mon-itor the progress of each project, as well as onsite visits in India for up to 3 months. The reason for this is to not only ensure operational excellence of projects, but to also identify areas in which the projects can have a greater impact on each child, or can be extended to add value to more children.
Specific areas in which we add non-financial value to our projects and partners are: donor communications - video, photographic, and written, financial reporting in addition to community, volunteer and partner engage-ment.
Having a strong relationship and consistent communica-tion is a key pillar for us in the success of our projects. This enables us to see how we can give a non-financial added value to the project. This takes places via email, phone/Skype, and on-site project visits.
For our current projects we are supporting Building Blocks / FDS, an independent nonprofit organization, based in Bangalore (India), that has been opening and operating Schools in India for 9 years now.

2013 Money raised for Charity
2013 was again a strong fundraising year for the Event Teams in Amsterdam and Madrid. AlphaBet Club hosted in total 17 events.
Alternatives 4 Children is supporting AlphaBet Club with donations to fund the operational expenses of the Edelweiss school. Their donation of the yearly funds has been moved to January 2014, instead of December 2013. Hence the lower amount donated by Alternatives 4 Children in 2013. This will be compensated in 2014.
The 3rd year in a row the ING Employee Foundation has been supporting AlphaBet Club by donating to our cause.
2013 Expenditures
In 2013 AlphaBet Club donated a record amount to its projects in India! We are very proud of the achievements in India and that we are impacting so many children's lives! The Supporting Services expenses increased (compared to 2012) mainly due to some one-time costs/investments. These include for example the development of the new website, design of the new logo, purchase of the URL alphabetclub.org.
