ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014
Institutional Milestones:
St. Joseph’s College for women (Autonomous) went through third cycle of assessment and
accreditation and is reaccredited with A Grade and thus SJCW (A) is the only women’s

New PG Programme, MSc. Home Science is being initiated from the academic year 2014-
15.
SJCW(A) is in the process of setting up a Community College (with courses in DTP, Health

Dept.), Basic Research Methodology (Bot., Chem., H.Sc. Dept.s), Executive Secretarial
Practice (Office Management Dept.), Advanced Creative Crafts (Home Science Dept.) and
Electronic Commerce (Dept. of Commerce) have been introduced in the V Sem.
Two new UGC Add- On Courses, 1. Certificate Course in Baking & Confectionery and 2.
Certificate Course in French have been initiated.Obligatory General Education paper Human

Ecology is introduced in place of obligatory General Education paper Environmental Studies
and General Elective paper Human Rights.
In place of Gender Development, Gender Studies is introduced and Chemistry for Daily
Living is replaced by Chemistry for Everyone as General Electives. Basic Mathematics is
renamed as Functional Mathematics. Science Technology And Development (STAD) is
restructured as a one semester (VI Sem.) Paper.

Faculty Enrichment Programs
Faculty Forum: The first meeting of members of Faculty Forum (for the academic year
2013-14) was held on 27.06.2013. In view of the impending NAAC peer team visit it has
been decided to focus on departmental preparatory work as a matter of priority. The first

session of faculty forum took place on 06.02.2014. Dr. Y. Fatima Rani, Librarian, spoke on
her research topic, ‘User Awareness and Access to Library Resources on Internet in Degree
College (Autonomous) Libraries in Andhra Pradesh(India): A Survey’. Dr. Fatima explained
how she identified the topic and also the methodology adopted by her. She then presented the
findings of her study. Her inspiring talk was followed by an interactive session. Queries on
sample size, data collection, F test and T test etc. were clarified. All the senior and junior
faculty members participated in the session. The second session of faculty forum was
conducted on 06.03.2014. Dr. G. Rama Lakshmi, HOD of Pol. Sc., presented her research to
the faculty forum. She spoke on ‘Women Leadership in Indian Political Process- A Case
Study of Visakhapatnam District Constituencies, Andhra Pradesh in General Elections 2009’.
The comparative study of various issues related to women in pre & post Independence
periods was brought out lucidly and was appreciated by everyone.
Induction Program was conducted for Fresh Faculty immediately after reopening to
familiarize them with autonomy, work culture at SJCW and professional ethics. The other
faculty enrichment programmes include
• One Day Workshop on ‘Personal Transformation and Value Development’ for all the

• A series of workshops on ‘Effective Oral and Power Point Presentation of Personal

Other Student Enrichment Programmes:
Induction program for IYr (Int., Deg., PG) students for an overview of the college, course and
the model code of conduct.
One month bridge course in functional grammar, one week bridge/orientation course in all
the other theory papers for all the IYr. Degree students. For new papers (not studied at +2
level) external experts acted as resource persons. All science students had bridge/orientation
course in practical papers also.
PG Chemistry students participated in the first Annual International Conference (AIC-1) &
Industry-CCRS Congress 2013 at Sankethika Vidya Parishad Engineering College, Vizag on
July 13th &14th 2013.
TIME Institute & Conduira Education & Training Services have separately organized
awareness drives to IIIYr. Students on higher education opportunities, competitive exams,
proficiency tests etc. in the months of July and August.
IIIYr. Home Science students were trained by Pidilite Industries on ‘Techniques in Painting’
during a three day workshop organized by Home Sc. Dept. in the month of August , 2013.
An MOU was signed with CII – YI on Aug 7 and the ‘Student Net’ unit of Young Indians
Network was launched in the college. Ms. Reshma Jain IIIBA, EPJ, was nominated as
Student Chair and Ms. Pranathi G as Co-Chair. Dr. Y. Lakshmi Prabha is the Staff Mentor for
the college chapter.
An awareness session on ‘Library Services’ was conducted for IYr. PG students where in an
orientation talk on the available library and other information resources at SJCW(A) was
followed by a library detour. All the PG students were informed of their respective N List ID
and the various books, journals etc. that could be accessed on line with that ID. Sept. 2013.
One day workshop on ‘Careers in Interior Design’ was organized for H. Sc. Students by the
H. Sc. Dept. in Nov.2013. Mr. S. L. N. Murthy, an Architect, spoke on ‘Recent Trends in

Interior Design’ and Dr. Sr. N.D. Veronica, spoke on ‘Relevance & Importance of Design’.
Mr. Srinivasa Murthy, Trainer from DATA PRO, trained the students in AUTOCAAD, 2D &
3D MAX.
A three day workshop on ‘Computer and Soft Skills’ was organized for all the PG students
to make the students more articulate in computer usage and communicative in English. Mrs.
Janaki Mohapata, HOD of C.Sc. Dept. and Dr. Nalini Dutta, HOD of PG Eng. Dept. were the
resource persons. Nov4th-6th.
The Rotary Club of Visakhapatnam RI3020 launched the Rotaract Club of St. Joseph’s in
Nov. 2013. Priyadarshini Sen Gupta, IM.Sc. was nominated as the first President and
Shravya, IIBA, EPJ as Secretary.
Students of PG Maths attended the 2 Week Winter School on ‘Measure Theory and
Functional Analysis’ organized by Dept. of Maths, AU in collaboration with Institute of
Mathematical Science, Chennai. From Nov.25th to Dec.6th2013.
One Day Media workshop was organized in Dec. 2013 for IIIYr. Journalism students by the
JMC. Dept.in collaboration with NSHM & I LEAD (Mass Comm. & Hotel Mngmt. Institute
from Kolkata). The workshop helped in training the students in journalistic writing,
photography, radio anchoring & graphic designing. Prof. Mrityunjoy Chatterjee, Director, I
LEAD, Mr. Jaideep Deo Bhang, Sr. Sub Editor, The Hindu, Mr. Tapas, Graphic Designer, I
LEAD and Veeru Mama, RJ, were the resource persons.
An Interactive Session was organized in Jan.2014 for the PG students with the outstanding
student achievers of the college. Participants had a fruitful interaction with the young
achievers in which the latter inspired the former by sharing the secrets of their success.
Ms. Akshaya Kannan, a Fullbright Nehru Fellow working at Avinashalingam University
shared her views on research and enlightened the final year degree students on available
research avenues and fellowships. Participants had a fruitful interaction with her after the
discourse. Jan.2014.
IIIYr. BA & BSc. Students volunteered for one week at the Silk Expo organized by Silk
Mark Board of AP State Government and gained real life experience in marketing and
customer care in Jan 2014. They were also paid nominal remuneration for their good work.
IIIYr. B.Sc. BBC students attended a two day workshop on ‘Emerging Techniques in
Biochemistry and Bioinformatics’ on 3rd & 4th Jan 2014. at GITAM University, Vizag. They
also participated in the training programme in practical techniques and gained hands on
experience in using certain advanced instruments.
PG English students participated in a two day workshop on ‘Career Counseling and
Guidance’ on Feb 21&22,2014. Dr. N. R. Jeevan Babu was the resource person.
Dr. K. Devendra Vijay, HOD of Chem., delivered a talk ‘Higher Education and Research
Avenues after UG’ to the IIIYr. Degree students at the exit level get together in March.2014.

Slow learners and under performers are supported through a structured Remedial Coaching
Programme coordinated by the Examination Dept..
‘The Spectrum’ magazine was published by the JMC Dept.. It is a complete student venture
in which students actively participated in writing, editing, sketching, designing, advertising
and photography of the magazine. The Hindi Dept. published Pratibha, The History Dept.
published Harshitha, Bot. and Zool. Depts. Published Bioflash and Off. Mngmt. Dept.
publised Panorama. These magazines contain several articles, poems, stories, jokes etc.
written by students. San Jose Herald, the half yearly journal also published by the JMC Dept.
not only publishes college news but also helps to train the students in various aspects of
reporting. Almost every department has a wall journal which is informative as well as
instrumental in bringing out students’ creativity to the fore.

JUNE:
The Student Council collaborated with ‘Kalamayi’, SJC Art Club and organized a display of sketches of Facial Contours of Women & Girl Child by Shruti Patawari, student of II BA EPJ.
JULY:
The Student Council in collaboration with ‘Shrishti’ the SJC Literary Club organized:
• Essay Writing Competition Competition on the topic ‘Corruption in Sports’.
• Workshop on Short Story Writing
Students participated in the ‘Yamaha Female Riding Training Camp’ on the 24th of July
AUGUST:
On the 15th of August, the Student Council presented a mammoth dance in which 42 students performed at the Independence Day Celebrations at AU Engineering Grounds, Andhra University. The group was adjudged the ‘Best Performance in the Cultural Event’.
On the 20th of August, the Student Council along with the Mobster’s Crew conducted auditions for students for a 1 week Contemporary Dance workshop in which 15 students received training.
SEPTEMBER:
The Student Council & ‘Kalamayi’ jointly organised a display of ‘Sketches of Landscapes and Facial Expressions’ by Priyamwada Nayak, student of I B.Sc CBZ.
Inaugural Function for the Academic Year 2013-14 was held on the 7th of September in the College Campus. Mr. G. Guruswami, IRS, Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), was the Chief Guest for the Event. In his address, Mr. Guruswami exhorted students to perform well in all areas of academic, cultural and social activities.
NOVEMBER:
The Student Council organized an Essay Writing Competition on behalf of Forum for Free enterprise, Mumbai on Socio-Economic issues
The Student Wing of Rotary Club, Vizag was formally installed. Around 85 students registered as members of the Rotaract Club.

NSS Unit of St. Joseph’s College organized a Blood Donation Camp, on the occasion of Blood Donor’s Day, in which 21 students donated blood. Elocution and Solo Dance and Group Dance Competitions were also organized. World Environment Day and International Drug Abuse day were observed

Department of Home Science observed the ‘Breast Feeding Week’ from 1-7 August and organized a Caption Writing Contest on the same topic.

Department of History & Political Science, Bala Vikas Foundation, along with the International Association for Religious Freedom organized a talk on ‘Dangers of Atomic Bombs’ delivered by Prof. K. Ravi, Former HOD, Political Science, Andhra University in connection with the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day on the 6th and 9th of August respectively.
SEPTEMBER:
Department of Hindi organized Poster making Competition on the theme ‘MAA TUJHE SALAAM’, a Poetry Writing Competition on the topic ‘Jeevan/Safar’ Solo Singing and Extempore Competitions as a part of Hindi Week Celebrations.
Hindi Diwas was celebrated on the 14th of September
In connection with the World Ozone Day, the Department of Botany put up a display of charts and models.
As a part of celebrations for Onam, the B.A. Department organized a Traditional Floral Decoration competition on the theme ‘Unity & Harmony’

JUNE:
2 NSS Volunteers-Abida Taskeen and Sonali Sahoo of II BA participated at the NSS Mega Camp organized at Bangalore University from the 29th of June to the 10th of July.
JULY:
Students participated in the 31st Fr. Ceyrac Memorial, National Level Essay Writing Competition conducted by All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation on ‘Creating Ecological Consciousness Towards Environmental Sustainability’.
15 Intermediate students participated in the Science Camp ‘INSPIRE’ organized from the 16 to the 19th of July by the Indian Maritime Central University, Vizag.
AUGUST:
5 Students-Reshma Jain, Joyana Ruth, Reshma Kumari, Divya and Prerna Yadav represented St. Joseph’s at the Intercollegiate Group Discussion organized by the Young India (YI) Group operating under the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on the topic ‘Achieving Good Governance in India- A dream or Reality’. Prerna Yadav was selected to represent Vizag YI at the Group discussion at the South Zone summit of CII at Kochi. The summit was also attended by Reshma Jain and Dr. Saileela, HOD, Home Science. Prerna Yadav, at this event, qualified for the next round of the Group Discussion to be held in the National level CII Summit at Delhi.
OCTOBER:
Students participated in the National Level Essay Competition on ‘Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power’ conducted by All India Peace & Solidarity Organization in connection with the occasion of ‘Space for Peace Walk’.
Priyanka D. of I B.A. CEM qualified and participated in the final roundof the best 10 at the All India Essay Contest for the prestigious Damodarshree National Award for Academic Excellence at SS Khanna Degree College, Allahabad. Two others, Divya Pooja from III BA EPO and Hannah Irani from I BA EPO were shortlisted as ‘Good’ in the run upto the event which consisted of a 3000-word essay on ‘What I can do?’
Students participated in the event organized by the Visakha Women’s College and won prizes in Paper Presentation and Model Making.
NOVEMBER:
Students participated at the Youth Festival at the Constituency Level conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs, Government of Andhra Pradesh, held at Gowri Degree College and won prizes in Group Dance, Mimicry, Group Singing, Group Discussion, Painting and Fancy Dress Competitions.
Students also participated in ‘Mahasiswa’- the event at VUDA Gurujada Kalashetram.
DECEMBER:
Students participated in the Youth Festival organized by the Department of Youth Affairs, Government of Andhra Pradesh, at YMCA and the students of II B.Comm won the I prize in One Act Play at the Zonal Level and thus qualified for the State Level Competition at Hyderabad.

Students participated in ‘Aurora ‘13’, an Intercollegiate Fest organized by Aditya Degree College and won prizes in Powerpoint Presentation, Model Presentations and Elocution Competition.
Students participated in the Management Fest ‘ASPIRE’ organized at Alwardas College of Business and won prizes in the Mehendi, Painting, Solo Dance and Ad Making Competitions.

JANUARY:
40 Students participated in SAARANG-2014, the annual fest organized by IIT Madras every year. This is the biggest event in South India organized and managed by students with ISO Certification. In the Street Play Event, St. Joseph’s script ‘The Gaze’ was adjudged the ‘Best Script’
NCC ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2013-2014
NCC activities for the academic year 2013-14 began with Independence day celebrations at
St. Joseph’s College for women (A).
On 15th Aug’2013 , St. Joseph’s College for women (A) , Visakhapatnam participated in 66th
year of Independence Day celebrations with reverence and enthusiasm at Andhra University. On
this occasion students were pound to have in their Prof.D.S.N Raju, Vice Chancellor, Andhra
University, Visakhapatnam as the Chief Guest. He had the proud privilege of unfurling the National
Flag on behalf of Andhra University and addressed the gathering. 37 NCC cadets were participated
in the March-Past with the Parade Commander Senior Under Officer (S.U.O) K.Laasya , II Degree(EPJ)
and Platoon Commander, SUO P.Lakshmi Devi, II Inter(MEC). Right Marker was JUO K.Vineetha
Velangini( II Inter MPC) , Left Marker- JUO G.Mounika (II Inter MPC). Chief Guest Inspected the
Parade.
1st year Degree and Inter students of 62 no’s were enrolled as NCC cadets on
12-07-2013.
NCC Cadets of I, II and III year attended the classes (given under annexure-l) and the

Contingent Commander and our Cadets were Participated in Guard of Honour.

Best NCC Officer Award for the year 2012-2013 among the Three Districts namely Visakhapatnam,
Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and she received this award from the Chief Guest on the NCC Day.
Flag Day : On the occasion of Flag day i.e., 7th December 2014, 34 cadets
participated.They reported to Zilla Sainik Welfare Office and handed over
Rs.33,252 /-which was collected on this occasion.
