10 years o EveryChild looking back, moving orward.

In November 2001, two like-mindedorganisations merged to orm the charity

we know and love today. Over the past 10 years EveryChild has run and supportedprojects in 25 countries with the aim obuilding positive utures or the worldsmost vulnerable children.

EveryChilds success is built on ourounders long histories and desire to

protect and promote child rights. They aimed to enhance the lives o the worldspoorest children by strengthening amiliesand communities. As youll discover in this2011/12 report, this ocus is as undamentaltoday as it was when our colleaguesprepared their rst ever EveryChild

Annual Report.

Its been an incredible 10 years. Weveormed partnerships with organisations

and governments across the world. Wevehad the opportunity to work with inspiringchildren determined to make the very besto their lives. Weve seen amilies, with justa little support and a lot o hard gra t,trans orm their own ortunes. And wevecontributed to systemic changes that willcontinue to bene t vulnerable children

or years to come.

We are proud that the projects we bothrun and support have been success ulenough or EveryChild to hand themover to our partners, or develop intonew organisations. This year our work inMoldova, Russia and Ukraine trans ormed

into new locally managed and locally runorganisations. Elsewhere, in Cambodia,

our partner has taken over our joint project with children living on the streets you canread more on page 18.

Making these kinds o shi ts in the way we work not only demonstrates con dencein our partners and sta , it places themanagement o them where it should be in the countries themselves. Our partnerscan ensure projects continue long into the

uture while EveryChild unds are retargetedto where we can be most e ective.

Turning 10 is not just an excuse to patourselves on the back or work well done;it is also a chance to consider the next10 years. At least 24 million children stilllive without parental care across the world without mothers and athers to look a ter them, these children are exposedto violence, exploitation and abuse.Failure to protect them undermines

worldwide development goals.

We are determined to have the greatestimpact on the lives o those 24 million

children. To do this we must undamentally change the way we work. This is why weare a ounding member o an internationalalliance o independent nationalorganisations called Family or Every Child.

The alliance grew this year as we work towards its launch in 2014. There are 13

ounding members working in their owncountries to ensure more children grow

Keeping amiliestogether.Poverty, neglect, violence and abuse can lead to

amily separation. Through training, childcare supportor income generation schemes we strengthen amiliesand keep them together.

Malawi

In Malawi we run over 100 childcarecentres or children being cared orby relatives and those rom struggling

amilies. The centres provide emotionaland educational support, along withnutritious meals. This extra support relieves

amilies o some o the costs o raisingchildren and rees up adults time so that

they can work and boost their amilysincome. This year around 4,230 childrenattended our centres.

Without enough money to support theirchildren, parents, particularly athers, o tenmake the tough decision to leave their

amilies in search o work. Sadly many arent able to send money home, andothers simply start a new li e elsewhere.To prevent parents or guardians migrating

or work, we o er help through loansand educational and arming supplies.

In 2011/12, our projects in Malawi keptover 350 children sa e in their amilies.

Ethiopia

With our par tner, Forum on SustainableChild Empowerment (FSCE), in Ethiopia

we run centres where vulnerable childrencan gain an education. These non ormaleducation centres give children whohave missed out on school as a resulto instability at home the chance to work

towards returning to mainstreameducation. FSCE enabled nearly 1,400 children to access educationin this way in 2011/12.

India

We support 340 child activity centres inIndias Karnataka and Tamil Nadu states.These centres are run by local peopleand give children rom lower castes extraeducational support. Through the centresour partners can also monitor vulnerablechildren and spread vital messages aboutprotecting their rights.

Over the past year our team in Indiahave worked with other organisationsto help amilies living in poverty accesssponsorship unds rom their localauthority. These unds help children go toschool and work towards a better uture.

Cambodia

We support our partner Meahto PhumKomah (MPK) in delivering parentingtraining in Cambodia to help parents andcarers discipline children without violence.

We also raise awareness about childrensrights, tra cking and child labour with theaim o protecting children at risk.

Nearly 1,400 children are bene ting from our partners free classes in Ethiopia.The classes give them the skills they need to return to mainstream school.

Russia

This year in Russia, EveryChild worked with our par tner, Partnership or Every ChildRussia, to run the countrys only respitecare service or children with disabilities.

Host amilies provided care to 97 childrenthroughout 2011/12, giving parents andchildren a much-needed break.

We also supported our partners serviceor amilies in crisis. The service gives

emergency support to amilies understrain to prevent them rom beingseparated. This year 49 children bene ted

when their amilies were helped to accessthis service rom their local authorities.

Guyana

Our partner ChildLinK worked with theamilies o 83 children this year to prevent

them rom leaving home. Poverty haddriven many o these children to beg

on the street while others were victimso violence or abuse. Through home visitsand individual meetings with children,siblings and parents, our partner wasable to resolve amily problems andensure children could remain at home

where they belong.

Getting childrenback into amilies. Wherever we can, we reunite children on their own with their amilies or help them get into alternative

amily-based care.

When Mzia was just three monthsold her mother le t her in aninstitution or babies in Georgia.Mzias mum had grown up ininstitutional care and couldntcope with raising her child alone.Nine year old Mzia would havespent her whole childhood ininstitutions but luckily she is now bene ting rom the oster caresystem EveryChild pioneeredin Georgia. Tanzania

Along with our partner Mkombozi inTanzania, we reunited 30 boys with their

amilies. The children were previously livingand working on the street and spent timeat our partners centre be ore beingsupported to return to their own amilies.Some amilies require extra support be orebeing able to welcome their child back home. This year our partner developedan intensive method or working with these

amilies and has been able to bring threetroubled amilies together in this way.

India

Many children in India are orced to work to support their amilies. O ten thesechildren live with their employers where

they are vulnerable to exploitation andhave no way o getting the educationthey need to build a better uture.

We helped over 120 children leaveemployment and return to their homesand schools throughout 2011/12. Over 70o these children had been living and

working on arms or in textile mills to pay o amily debts.

Kenya

In the slums o Kenyas capital Nairobithousands o people scrape a living by sorting through the waste at huge rubbishdumps or items to sell. Tragically many o these people are children who risk theirsa ety and health, and miss out on school,to boost their amilies incomes by just a

ew pence. Girls living or working on thestreet are particularly vulnerable to abuseand exploitation. EveryChild supportsthese girls by unding our partners work

with them and their amilies. Our partner,PKL, runs a residential centre where girlslive or 10 months receiving educationaland emotional help be ore returning totheir amilies. We also support parents,particularly mothers, to help them gainthe skills and unds they need to startsmall businesses. This year 100 girls le tthe centre to be reunited with their amiliesand return to school.

We also work with Solwodi in Kenya toimprove the lives o children living ininstitutional care or child-only amilies.

Where we can, we bring children growingup alone back together with their parents,or other relatives. This year 41 children

were reunited with their amilies.

Moldova and Georgia We challenge the prevalence o residentialinstitutions in ormer Soviet Union countrieslike Moldova and Georgia. We know thatthe best place or most children is withina amily and work hard to get them outo large institutions that do so much harm.This year EveryChild supported the closureo ve institutions in Moldova and a urther10 in Georgia. We ensure all childrenleaving institutions have sa e homesto return to, or we help to nd them

alternative care with oster amilies orin small, amily-like childrens homes.

There are now just seven state-runinstitutions in Georgia. They are home toaround 300 children and we are working

with the Georgian government to ensurethat these institutions close, and thechildren are ound new homes, by 2014.

Institutional care is no place for a child to grow up.We are working with the Georgian government to ensure the last state-run institutions close by 20 14.

Making surechildren are heard. We help children, their amilies and communities ndlasting solutions to their problems by enabling them tospeak or themselves and take part in decisions thata ect their lives.

Malawi

Through our childrens centres and childrights clubs in Malawi we helped over5,300 vulnerable children learn abouttheir rights and call on decision-makers tomake changes that will improve their lives.This year children rom centres and clubsin two areas were able to infuence theirdistrict education authorities to send

teachers to schools su ering a shortageo sta . They also managed to persuadeover 150 children who had dropped outo school to return to education.

Nepal

In Nepal we began working with a new partner, Voice o Children (VOC), to supportchildren living on the streets. With theaim o providing long-term amily care

or children who are unable to return totheir own amilies a ter living on the street,EveryChild and VOC are exploring oster

care in Nepal. To lay the oundations odeveloping a oster care system, ourpartner worked intensively with ve children

who may bene t. High level meetings and workshops were also held with memberso the central and local governments,other non governmental organisationsand social workers to prepare them

or supporting children in oster care.

Moldova

EveryChild in Moldova worked to developtwo policies with the aim o improving childparticipation within the child protectionsystem. Three regional councils approvedthe policies and ollowed up this approvalby delivering training in decision-making

or children sitting on advisory boards.These young people are part o groups

who advise pro essionals working withthe countrys most vulnerable children.

Surabhi, now 15, was just 13 when she went to work ata spinning mill. Our partner,READ, helped Surabhileave the mill. She is now learning computer skills that

will help her nd secure work as an adult.

Surabhisstory

The Sumangali Thittam, or wedding scheme,is an exploitative bonded labour scheme thatpreys on young teenage girls in Tamil Nadu.The scheme sees girls as young as 12 recruitedto work in the regions textile mills on the promiseo a large payment in return or three to ve

years service.

The girls usually come rom the lowest Arunthatiyarcaste the Dalits among Dalits or untouchables.They ace a li e o harsh discrimination andextreme poverty poverty that is exploited by textile mill owners in search o cheap labour.In August 2011, EveryChild and our partners inTamil Nadu interviewed 45 girls a ected by theSumangali scheme. The girls revealed thatextreme poverty is the principle actor in joiningthe scheme. Their amilies were also persuaded

by promises o three meals a day, com ortableaccommodation and entertainment programmes

or their children.

In reality, on signing up to the scheme girls areorced to leave their homes and live in crowded

conditions while working long, exhausting hours.The girls we spoke to reported sexual harassmentand verbal abuse rom their supervisors and 70%had su ered acute health problems includingasthma and stomach and chest pains.

Sadly, a ter sacri cing their rights, their health andtheir dignity, most girls never receive the paymentthey are promised. EveryChild is working with localpartners in Tamil Nadu to combat the Sumangalischeme through education and amily support.

In uencing andinspiring change.By raising awareness, advocating or changes andhighlighting the issues a ecting vulnerable children

we can trans orm many more lives than through ourprojects alone.

Tanzania

With unding rom the Department orInternational Development (DFID) in theUK, EveryChild and two o our partners,Mkombozi and The National Organisation

or Legal Assistance (NOLA), in Tanzaniaare working to raise awareness o , andprotect, childrens rights. This year, NOLA

ormed the Child Justice Forum. Made up

o government representatives and civilsociety organisations, this orum willoversee the implementation o the

Law o the Child Act, which provides thelegal ramework to realise and protectthe rights o Tanzanias children.

Our partners also undertook awareness-raising activities such ascommunity theatre, setting up childrights groups and distributing in ormationleafets to in orm over 8,000 people aboutchildrens rights. A urther campaign was

launched to spread the word about how to recognise child abuse.

Kenya

As a member o Kenyas Girl ChildNetwork, our partner PKL helped infuencethe government to allocate budget orthe provision o ree sanitary pads or

vulnerable girls in primary and secondary schools. Embarrassment and lack oknowledge can lead girls to drop out oschool at puberty. Throughout 2011/12around 22,000 young girls bene ted

rom the ree pads, greatly improvingtheir health and ability to continueattending school.

India

In January 2012, EveryChild in Indiacompleted our research into the impacto state sponsorship on children rom poor

households in Karnataka. The ndings were shared at an event attended by key decision-makers, such as the Chairpersono the State Child Rights Commission, andother non governmental organisations.State sponsorship provides unds tochildren to help them stay in school andtrain or more positive utures. EveryChildsresearch has helped us infuence localauthorities to ensure that sponsorship

unds are paid, and that vulnerableamilies receive the support they need.

Ukraine Advocacy by EveryChild and otherorganisations in Ukraine led the councilrepresenting the countrys provinces toreview its programme on childcare re ormand amily support. Importantly, local

amily support payments have beenintroduced through the programme,

which, coupled with the provision osocial services, are now making a hugedi erence to amilies in need.

WorldwideEveryChilds report series, Positive carechoices, grew by two papers. The serieshighlights the need or investment in arange o care choices or vulnerablechildren in order to achieve the bestpossible outcomes or young people.Following on rom Scaling down ,published in early 2011, we launched

Adopting better care and Fostering better care . Together the papers make a case

or reducing the numbers o children in

residential care and developing ostercare and adoption as alternatives.

In a joint paper published with the BetterCare Network in 2012, Enabling reform,

we argued that supporting children withdisabilities must be at the heart ochildcare re orm.

Towards the end o the year, EveryChildpublished a literature review, Makingsocial work work . The review exploressocial work across the world and calls or

vulnerable children to be better assessedso that they receive the support and carethey need.

Over the past year we have handedover our work in Cambodia, Moldova,Russia and Ukraine to local partners. Withall o our projects, EveryChilds ultimateaim is to be able to hand the work over toa local partner so that they can continuechanging lives or generations to come.

In Cambodia our par tner Meahto PhumKomah (MPK) will continue supportingchildren living on the streets andempowering vulnerable amilies inorder to prevent children rom endingup on their own.

EveryChild in Moldova made thetransition to becoming an independentorganisation, Partnerships or Every ChildMoldova (P4EC), in 2011/12. P4EC willcontinue to build on EveryChildsachievements in the eld o child rights.Over the past 10 years, EveryChild hasbeen instrumental in overhauling Moldovasentire social care system. Weve closeddown institutions and introduced conceptssuch as a oster care and social work to

a previously reluctant government.In July 2011, EveryChild handed overour work in Russia to Partnership or Every Child Russia (P4EC). This new Russianorganisation, created out o our work,

will continue to support amilies in crisisand give children with disabilities andtheir carers much needed breaks throughthe countrys only respite care service.

EveryChilds o ce in Ukraine has now closed and an independent organisation,Partnership or Every Child Ukraine, hasbeen ormed to continue building onour work. Partnership or Every Childis providing pro essional support tochildren, amilies, communities and thegovernment to ensure that every childgrows up in a sa e and secure amily.

For over 14 years, one o our partners in Tanzania,Mkombozi, has run a residential centre or boysliving or working on the street. The centre is asanctuary or vulnerable young people keepingthem o the streets and sa e rom harm. Asthey developed their work, Mkombozi saw thatalthough the centre keeps children sa e, it canto er the care and nurture o a amily.

Mkombozi shares EveryChilds belie that a amily is the best place or a child; this is why in 2011/12they made the decision to change the centresaim and structure. Guided by EveryChildsresearch paper Scaling down: Reducing,

reshaping and improving residential care around the world , our partner reshaped the childrens

accommodation so that boys now live in smallgroups cared or by just one or two consistentcarers rather than a large number o sta .Children no longer stay at the centre long termbut live there or up to a year while Mkombozisupport them and their amilies intensively be orereuniting them. Our partner also works with whole

amilies, empowering them so that children donot end up on the streets in the rst place.

Mkombozi, with support rom EveryChild, arenow sharing their success ul restructure with otherorganisations running similar care homes with theaim o ensuring better care or vulnerable childrenacross Tanzania.

Fundraising.Thanks to people like you, we raised 8.7 million in 2011/12.

Despite the continuing tough economicclimate, the majority o our unds came

rom the UK public who responded to ourappeals, online messages and undraiserson the street with donations and legacies

totalling 5.8 million. This income is largely unrestricted, which hugely bene tsEveryChild as we are able to target ourresources where the need is greatest.

Members o the public also dug deepor EveryChild by sponsoring riends,

colleagues and relatives taking part inevents. In May 2011 over 30 people raised16,000 or our work in Georgia by trekking35 miles rom Tunbridge Wells to the City as part o Futures or Kids inaugural Walk to Work. In September corporatesupporters Tokio Marine Europe took toDorsets beauti ul coastline or a JurassicCoast Walk raising a wonder ul 10,000to support projects in Tanzania.

As we handed over our work with childrenliving, or at risk o living, on the street inCambodia to our local partner this year

we also ended our sponsorshipprogramme there. Our loyal sponsorsdiscussed the changes with the EveryChildteam and many went on to sponsorchildren in Malawi and India.

TRAID team members Leigh McAlea,Communications Manager, and LylaPatel, Head o Education, made a trip

to India to visit an EveryChild and TRAIDunded project with child labourers in

Tamil Nadu . They met children supportedto leave exploitative work and saw how child activity centres are helping to keep

children sa e and in school.

2011/12 proved to be a challenging year or grants as competition or undscontinues to step up across the UK.Despite this, EveryChild has beensuccess ul in securing our new undingpartners who will support our projects

with grants totalling nearly 2 million. We began a three year partnership with the GHR Foundation to support theestablishment o an international allianceto help more children grow up in sa eand caring amilies or in appropriatepermanent alternative care. Comic Relieand the Jersey Overseas Aid Commissionare enabling us to work with CWISH inNepal to protect child domestic workers,

while a grant rom DFID will allow EveryChild and our partners to de endchild rights in Tanzania.

Without the continued support romindividuals, companies, trusts and

oundations, EveryChilds work wouldsimply not be possible. Thousands ochildren, their amilies and communitiesare looking orward to a brighter uturethanks to you.
