Dear Friends,

As we close Fiscal Year 2012, I would like to thank the hundreds of people who make our work possible. That includes you and so many others who believe in our mission. Our intergenerational work continues and thrives, helping thousands of children learn to read better and more fluently and at the same time providing meaningful service forolder adults who are helping those children succeed.

It has been a great year with lots of changes. Our national partner, Experience Corps, merged with AARP nearly a year ago. The program is now called AARP Experience Corps and truly leverages AARP’s capacity to engage older adults in service. As an affiliate, our program here in Greater Boston remains one of the largest and most effective in the nation.

I have been proud to share the leadership of Generations Incorporated the past three years with President Samantha Levine, who has brought incredible leadership and strategic thinking to our organization. Sam is stepping down as President, and will thankfully remain on the board. Coming on as President will be Carol Kamin. Carol is the former President and CEO of Children’s Action Alliance, helping influence policies and decisions affecting children in Arizona. She has been a consistent and passionate voice for children for over 30 years and brought that passion to Generations Incorporated as a volunteer, and eventually a board member. I look forward to working very closely with Carol as we begin implementation of our new strategic plan.

For much of the year we have been involved in a rigorous business planning process, sponsored by the Barr Foundation and led by the Bridgespan Group. Over the next three years, we will refine our programs, build stronger infrastructure and service delivery systems, and develop new evaluation tools. I look forward to sharing this plan with you in the coming months.

We have also made big investments in technology and training. Our data collection and analysis systems have been dramatically improved. We purchased laptop computers for all 17 of our program locations so that data can easily be collected. And when we track data, it goes straight into our new Salesforce database, which is cloud based and allows us to manage and track workflow, donations, and communications all in real-time. This has resulted in better program management and faster reporting.

Sadly, we lost one of our biggest champions & supporters, Lorraine Tegan who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. For over seven years, Lorraine served on our Board of Directors and as a volunteer in our programs.

In the pages that follow, you will read about our highly successful program. We are proud of these accomplishments, and continually grateful for the support of so many of you who make our work possible. It is because of you -- our generous donors, volunteer members and friends— that we have improved the literacy ability of so many of Greater Boston’s children and the life experiences of older adults. It is also on behalf of these children and the older adults that I thank you.

Gratefully,

Classroom literaCy Program: brings highly trained AARP Experience Corps volunteer members into kindergarten through third grade classrooms to work with children to improve literacy skills. This not only provides an extra learning opportunity for children, but also provides a smaller adult:child ratio inside the classroom.

85% of teachers said our volunteer members made a strong impact on improving students’ motivation to learn

87% of teachers stated that the presence of a volunteer member in the classroom gave them extra time to assist students struggling academically

reading CoaChes Program: A structured one-on-one literacy program for first through third grade students that pairs trained AARP Experience Corps volunteer members with children who are struggling to read. The program has a focus on reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary building. It builds on important reading skills while also creating a love of reading and strong intergenerational relationships.

On average, participating students showed a 74% * improvement in key literacy skills Those who reached the benchmark of 35 sessions or more on average saw a 90% improvement in key literacy skills.

*Based on pre- and post- Basic Reading Inverntory results.

Active Aging ProgramActive Aging is program that engages our volunteers in meaningful activities (beyond tutoring) that enhance their physical, mental and social well-being and connects them to community. The programs are offered at no cost to the volunteer. It is our “thank you” to volunteers for giving themselves and their time to making a difference in a child’s life. The aim of the Active Aging Program is to support the whole volunteer, to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle and to motivate volunteers to continue to serve. We offer 149 activities such the ones described below
