ALUMNI: FOUNDATION GIVING

This year, we would like to recognize Mr. Michael Kolchin ‘61N of Tannersville, Pennsylvania andMr. Robert Griffin ‘73S of Shavano Park, Texas. These two gentlemen have been instrumental in either founding their own funds within the Foundation or generously supporting a variety of efforts and causes throughout the year.

Over the past five years, many alumni have risen to the occasion to support their alma mater. During that time, the overall value of the Farragut Foundation, the school’s endowment, has nearly doubled while still making disbursements of $800,000 to the school.

PARENT: ANNUAL GIVING

Ms. Bernadette Hart is the mother of Hans ‘13 (Battalion Commander 2012-2013) and Konrad ‘18, both 7-day boarding students from Oklahoma. Her son, Hans, began attending Farragut as a boarder in 6th grade, back in 2007.

Bernadette, affectionately known as “Bernie, has been an avid supporter of Farragut for several years. Her initial contribution came when she saw the need to renovate and install a new roof on the Middle School science center where Coach Mike Nicholson teaches. Coach Nick was a very positive influence on her son Hans, and she wanted to show her appreciation for all he does and thus funded the project. She has continually funded items for the dorms and residential life, including the new furniture in the East Lounge last year.

NEW 8-LANE RUBBERIZED TRACK FACILITY

A little over a year ago, our community came together for a campaign that literally changed the landscape of our campus. The goal was simple: transform our modest, six-lane asphalt track into a modern, rubberized eight-lane track. This transformation gave our Track & Field athletes an amazing platform on which to train and win. Additionally, a rubberized track means our school can be considered for District, Regional, and State Track & Field meets, bringing us local and national exposure.

We relied heavily on the generosity and support of current families, our staff, and the local community. Thanks to these patrons and an anonymous lead donor we’ve planned a ribbon cutting and 5K “Fun Run” in April ‘14, the perfect way for students to put their footprint on the school’s newest avenue to success.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

Congratulations to Allison “Allie” Kowalczyk ‘14 for receiving the inaugural MAJ Megan McClung ‘91N, USMC Scholarship Award. The fund was created in remembrance of McClung, the first female soldier to lose her life in the Iraq War, and awards a scholarship to a female student who has aspirations for a military career.

Kowalczyk participated in the Naval Academy’s annual summer seminar and in 2012 had already started fulfilling her commitments for her nominations. She began at Farragut as a 7-day boarding student before her family relocated from Reno back to Florida, where she lived most her life.

Pictured L-R: Charlie Duke ‘53S and Allie ‘14 enjoy a friendly greeting during the Alumni “Meet the Moonwalker” VIP Reception at the Philadelphia Union League in December 2013.

DONOR TRIPLES THE VALUE OF BOARDING LIFE GIFTS

Mr. Randy Kressler ‘60N, member of the Farragut Board of Directors, had such a transformational boarding experience that today he paid it forward.

Gifts made to the Pine Beach Tribute Fund by the end of 2013 were matched by Mr. Kressler, $2 for every $1. He matched gifts up to $40,000.

CLASS OF ‘63N FUNDS NEW SCHOLARSHIP

Ignited by a great weekend of bonding during Homecoming 2013, the Class of ‘63N left excited and ready to honor their class as a whole, especially their fallen Battalion Commander, Vic Saitta.

Bob Kurz, Ken Fosdick, Bill McSherry, and Phil Pratt all banded together with initial donations, and as of December 1, 2013 the Vic Saitta ‘63N Memorial Scholarship Fund was officially formed within the Foundation to keep the memories, names, and history of the Class of ‘63N alive. The class set a goal of $63,000 (to honor the class year) and so far nearly 50% has been committed.

Specific Directions of Annual Giving

Annual Giving

Restricted Gifts$160,003

Restricted gifts include dorm furniture and maintenance, financial aid, funds to start the lacrosse program, items for marine science, a large format printer for engineering, athletics, drill team, and classrooms materials.

Track and Field$134,037

In 2013 we began a total renovation of the track to create an eight-lane rubberized track. This track will allow us to host meets on campus.

Parents’ Group $127,255

The sole purpose of our Parents’ Group volunteers is to enhance the quality of Farragut educational programs by raising money at the Annual Auction, Bowl-A-Thon, poinsettia holiday sale, and the Lucky Bag used uniform store.

Art, Music, and Drill$6,900

These gifts were given to support specific needs for each of these areas. For instance, sheet music, travel expenses, and Drill Team support at the school’s 80th Anniversary Celebration in Pine Beach, NJ.

Annual Fund for Student Enrichment (AFSE) $81,708

As an independent, non-profit school, Farragut relies heavily on fundraising and alumni giving to cover the costs of educating a child. Tuition alone cannot begin to cover the costs of running a 24/7 operation, not to mention the implementation of new curricular programs, facility improvements and technology upgrades. The Annual Fund for Student Enrichment is the necessary funding needed to cover the gap between tuition revenue and actual operating costs. The school relies on donations to this fund and thanks to you, our donors; we reach our goal each year. We are truly grateful to our parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends who believe in the mission of our school and are willing to support our efforts.

Sailing$2,950

These funds were organized by the Class of ‘61 to purchase a competitive 420 sailboat.

Heritage Society Members

Heritage Society membership indicates that Admiral Farragut Academy and/or the Foundation is included in the estate plans of a donor. Some give through a simple bequest by way of their will, others transfer the ownership of life insurance or a percentage of their IRA, while others elect to use one of the many options available through various trust arrangements. The method is not as important as the decision.

The Heritage “100” Society is designed to recognize the first 100 donors who have chosen to become Heritage Society members. Following are the names of those who have notified us of their intentions to be among the first 100.

Foundation GivingRecognizing Our DonorsThe Foundation of Admiral Farragut Academy serves as the school’s endowment. Our Foundation is a vital part of our future, providing the capital necessary to enhance financial aid awards, academic programs, and Farragut’s educational innovation.

Admiral Farragut Academy has been an institution for over three-quarters of a century. During that time we have never wavered from our mission to instill the core values of integrity, self-discipline, perseverance, and wellness & fitness into the lives of young men and women. We measure our success not by our own accomplishments, but by those of our cadets. Our ability to continue to impact future generations is dependent upon the direct involvement of those who understand and value the Farragut Experience.
