The year 2012/2013 saw the establishment of a number of artistic policies introduced in the previous year.

• Toencourageyoungpeopletocometothetheatrethroughspecialinitiatives,ArtsAwards,ticketoffersandbecominginvolvedinoneofouryouththeatres
• Tocontinueawiderangeofeducationandcommunity workforthecounty
• Todevelopaseriesofdanceclasses,youththeatresandcommunitychoirsbasedattheEveryman
Webeganourpolicyofproducingaplayannuallyalthoughtwofellwithinthisfinancialyear.In2012TennesseeWilliam’smasterpiece,A Glass Menagerie,wasasplendidstartandmuchadmired.In2013wemountedCider with RosieadaptedfromLaurieLee’smemoiroflifeinGloucestershire.BothplaysweredirectedbyPaulMilton.TheplaythentouredandthelongtermplanistomountaplayannuallyandtouraroundtheUK–establishinganationalreputationfortheEverymananddevelopinganewrevenuestream.
TheEverymannowreceivesregularvisitsfromPropellerTheatreCompany,OutofJoint,KneehighTheatre,NorthernBroadsides,BirminghamRoyalBallet,StephenJosephTheatrefromScarborough,BalletBoyzandRichardAlstonDanceCompany.WealsowelcomedEnglishTouringTheatreandthefirstproductionfromtheTouringConsortium(ofwhichwearemembers)The Diary of Anne Frank.NextyearweaddShakespeareattheTobaccoFactory,HullTruckandClywdTheatreCymruwiththeplanthattheyreturneachyear.Allthesecompaniesarefundedbytheirartscouncilsandproducehighstandardwork.
Wealsopresentedsomefineproductionsfromthecommercialsector–Relatively SpeakingfromBathTheatreRoyalwithFelicityKendal;The HandymanfromtheYvonneArnaudTheatre,GuildfordwithTimothyWest;The Woman in Black;Goodnight Mr TomandAn Inspector Calls.
Thisyear’splayforyoungerchildrenintheStudioTheatrewasThe Enormous Turnip–ourattempttogiveagoodtheatreexperienceforchildrentooyoungforthepantomimeinthemainhouse.Therewereafurthersixplaysproducedin-houseandpresentedintheStudio–allnewlywrittenandmanybylocalauthors.
ThemanyandvariededucationandcommunityprojectsaredetailedinthisannualreportasistheactivitiesofourActorsandWritersLabs.ThesewellestablishedgroupsencourageandsupportlocalprofessionalartistsandtheirworkisnowbearingfruitinavarietyofStudioproductions.
Financially,thetheatresufferedfromthegeneraleconomicmoodandendedtheyearwithadeficitentirelyrelatedtoadownturninticketsales.However,wehavemadecutbacksinexpenditureandmadesomepainfulstaffsavingswhichshouldmeanthattheEverymancanweatherfuturesqualls ifnotstormswithareducedcostbase.
AnannualreportisagoodandtraditionalplacetopraisethestafffortheeffortsandtheirtalentsthroughtheyearandthankalloursponsorsandsupporterswithparticularmentionofourfundersArtsCouncilEnglandandCheltenhamBoroughCouncilandoftheBoardmembersfortheirtime andexpertise.

Great ExpectationsintheStudioTheatrewasanEverymanco-production(incollaborationwiththeWorcesterHiveandtheUniversityofWorcester)tocelebratetheCharlesDickensbicentenary.TheEveryman’screativeteamandprofessionalactorsworkedalongsidelocalcommunityperformersandactors-in-trainingfromtheUniversityofWorcester.Thiswasadevelopmentofthe2011Lady Clancartyproject–andwascommissionedbyTheHeritageLotteryFund.Great ExpectationswasstagedintheEverymanStudioTheatreandatTheHiveinWorcester.
Great Expectationsutilizeddigitalimagestomaximisetheproduction’simpactwhenbeingperformedinnon-traditionalvenues(TheHiveisalibrary)andplayedtoaudiencesmadeupofsecondaryschoolsfromWorcesterandGloucestershire.TheEverymanandtheUniversityofWorcesterhopetosustainthepartnershipestablishedbytheGreat Expectationsprojectanddevelopfutureprojectstogether.Showshighlightedinblacktext,inthelistbelow,wereproducedbyTheEverymanTheatre.

STAR SHINEIncollaborationwiththeNationalStarCollegeforseverelydisabledyoungpeople,theEverymanproducedaplaybasedonthethemeoftheParalympics(tocoincidewithLondon2012).WrittenbyamemberoftheEveryman’sWriters’Labtheplayfeatureddisabledstudentactorsandtouredlocalprimaryschools,engagingover700children.
POSITIVE MOVESTheEverymanteamworkedwithsixprimaryschoolsinGloucestershireforthisprojectpartlyfundedbyCheltenhamPolice.Nearly100youngpeopletookpartintheproject,whichwasbasedonthethemeof“workingtogether”. TheprojectculminatedinaperformanceatAllSaintsAacademySecondarySchool.

SKYLINESInconjunctionwithTheatreCentre,HampsteadTheatreandtheRoyalExchange,Manchester,12membersoftheEverymanTheatre’sWriters’Labworkedwithprofessionalplaywrightstocreatescriptsforyoungpeople.Thescriptswereperformedtoanaudienceof50localyoungpeoplewhoweregiventheopportunitytoprovidefeedbackontheworkandchildren’stheatreingeneral.
FLY EDDIE FLY!CommissionedbytheArtsCouncilandwrittenbyWriters’LabmemberMirandaWalker,Fly Eddie Fly!wasbasedonthelifestoryoflocallegendEddie“TheEagle”Edwards. Fly Eddie Fly! playedtocapacityaudiencesduringitsweek-longrunintheStudioTheatre.
ARTS AWARDSInthesummerof2012theEverymanTheatreranitsfirsteverMusicalTheatreSummerSchoolforyoungpeopleages12–18.SummerSchoolstudentsexceededthetargetofachievingfourBronzeArtsAwardsandonestudentachievedaSilver.

The Everyman Open Day:Streetentertainerswelcomedpeopleofallagesintothetheatreforawiderangeoffreeactivities,workshopsandperformances.Therewerebackstagetours,acting,voiceandwritingworkshopsforadults.Children’sactivitiesincludeddramaworkshops,puppetshowsandfacepainting.
All Our Daughters:TheEverymanorganisedaconferencetoraiseawarenessoftheissueofforcedmarriages.Theeveningincludedspeakersfromarangeoforganisationsandpowerfultestimonyfromsurvivorsofforcedmarriages.ThedayculminatedinaperformanceintheEveryman’sStudioTheatreentitledAll Our DaughtersbyTheNewVicTheatre.

Selfish Giant Tour:TheEverymantouredthiswelllovedtaletofamilyaudiencesatWorcesterArtsWorkshop,WychwoodFestival(Cheltenham)andThePicturedromeinGloucester.Anintimateperformancewheretheactorsusedpuppets,songsandaudienceparticipationtoengagetheaudience ofchildrenaged3–5yearsandtheirfamilies.
Right Royal Knees Up:ActorsandmusicianstouredCareHomesandResidentialCentreswithexcerptsandsongsinatraditional“OldTimeMusicHall”styleandthentheparticipantswereinvitedtoattendastudioperformance.
Practitioners’ Lab:TheEverymangivesfreetrainingtocommunityartspractitionersacrossGloucestershire.Ononesessiontheyweregiventheopportunitytosharesomeoftheirskillswiththisnetworkofprofessionals.Theywerealsogiven“ManagingChallengingBehaviour”training.
Fun Day for Vulnerable Children:TheEverymanprovidedarangeofcreativeactivitiesincludingstreetdance,circusskills,sambadrummingandfacepaintingatafamilyfun dayforvulnerablechildrenacrossGloucestershire.
The Garage Project: TheEverymanprovidedarangeoftasterworkshopsfortheHomelessandVulnerablyHousedincludingsambadrumming,creativewriting,salsadance,musicaltheatredanceandsongwritingsomeofwhichtookplaceinaconverted“Garage”.WhenwehadbuiltupsometrustwiththisgroupofpeoplewewereabletodosomelongerprojectsincludingcollectivelymakingalargebatikhangingandrehearsingChristmassongsforaperformanceinfrontofapproximately100peopleatthe“KingsTable”projectofTrinityChurch.
The Rock: TheEverymanworkedat“TheRock”YouthProjectwithyoungpeoplefromreferralcentresandhelpedthemattaintheirAsdanaward.EverymanActorsperformedascenefrom“BadKids”byMichaelGreenmanandthentheyoungpeoplebeganlearningskillstoputtogethertheirownperformance.Everymanpractitionershelpedthemtocollectivelycreatealargecollectivegraffitiwallwhichbecamethebackdropfortheirperformancewhichincorporatedbreakdanceandcircusskills.
U Turn: ApartnershipprojectwithHestersWayPolice stationwheretheEverymanhelpsrunafterschooldramaprojectsinninelocalprimaryschoolsonthethemeof “Anti-SocialBehaviour”.ThisprojectculminatedinashowcaseatAllSaintsAcademywhereallnineimprovisationswereperformedinfrontofparents.
Acting for Everyone:Aseriesofdirectingworkshopsforadults.Directors,includingAndyBurdenfromtheTobaccoFactoryinBristol,introducedvariouspracticaltechniquesthattheyuseintherehearsalroom.
Upstairs Downstairs: “InspiringFamilies”wereinvitedtoattendaVictorianactivitydaywhereparticipantswereabletoexperiencebeingaservantandmakingVictorianfood. ThefamiliesexperiencedwhatiswhatliketobeachildfromthearistocracyandtriedsomeVictoriancraftactivities.Thedayculminatedinashadowpuppetperformanceandsharingthefoodtheyhadmade.
Young Carers Project: Variouscreativeworkshopsincludingabackstagetour,dramaandcircusskillsworkshopsweregiventotheCheltenhamYoungCarersgroups.
Family Space:Storytelling,dramaandcraftworkshopsalllinkedtothethemeofDickWittingtonforfamiliesfromHestersWay.

YOUTHTHEATRE
The Everyman Theatre’s Young Company celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2012.
Fromhumblebeginnings,theyouththeatrenowhasfiveseparategroups.Twojuniorgroups(ages7to10),twomiddlegroups(ages13to16)andaseniorgroup(16-18yearolds).
Over140youngpeopleattendedyouththeatrein2012/2013.SessionswereheldinDunalleyPrimarySchool,andtheEverymanTheatre.YoungCompanymembersperformedintheEveryman’sStudioTheatreinavarietyofproductions,notablyintwospecially-writtenplays:The Sky Is Falling byLewisHastingsandGreen JackbyMartinLytton(bothmembersoftheEveryman’sWritersLab).

PANTOMIMEANDSTUDIOWORKSHOPS
The Everyman continued its tradition of celebrating the season with our pantomime in the main house and two alternative productions in the Studio Theatre.
TheEveryman’sproductionofDick WhittingtonfeaturedGloucestershire’sfavouriteclown,Tweedy,fromGiffordsCircusandonceagainplayedtoanaudienceofnearly40,000ecstaticparentsandchildren,andteachersandstudentsfromhundredsofschoolsthroughoutGloucestershireandbeyond.
ThealternativeChristmasproductionsintheStudioTheatrewereThe Enormous Turnip,perfectforkidsaged3–7andIntimate Exchanges,anadultalternativetoourpantomime.
Priortotheproductions,theEverymanTheatre’sEducationandCommunityDepartmentdeliveredworkshopsinlocalschoolsintroducingstudentstothehistoryofpantomimeandteachingthemabouttheworkthatgoesintoputtingonagreatshow.
