“May you have the intellect and the humility to navigate a complex and nuanced world. May you be comfortable living in the gray,

and may you stay open to and curious about perspectives, beliefs and opinions that are

different from yours. Be intellectuals but be pragmatists and mensches, as well.

Embrace complexity, acknowledge that more than one way might be right, good, and true in any situation…and then make

the call, take the stand and live in the world with passion and urgency.”

“ 2010-2011 was an extraordinary year for Gann thanks to the strength of, and the partnership between, Gann’s professional and lay leadership.

We continued our focus on challenging and nurturing our students in all aspects of their Gann experience and developing outstanding

teachers and educators who care deeply about their students. Our dedicated parents, Trustees,

and the greater community made this all possible through their generous support.”ELIZABETH JICK

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTGann Academy is at the forefront of JewishEducation in the area of professional development through the launch of theFaculty Rounds Program, a cutting edgeapproach to teaching. The goal of the FacultyRounds Program is to build a more reflectiveand collaborative professional learning community in which teachers are continuallyworking to improve their teaching practice.Through teachers’ participation in this program, they will gain new skills and capacities, thereby improving student learning. Gann anticipates that this approachto professional development will become anational model for other schools in theJewish world and beyond.

CHANOCH LANA’AR: A HOLISTICAPPROACH TO JEWISH VALUES & CHARACTER EDUCATIONGann Academy has launched a pilot program called Chanoch Lana’Ar: a comprehensive, system-wide cultural changeinitiative that will enable each student todevelop the habits of heart and mind necessary to develop their Jewish identityand become independent, responsible learners and citizens. Chanoch Lana’Ar focuses attention on helping students develop character and Jewish identity inways that integrate in-depth understanding

of self and relationships with others, whilebecoming spiritually informed by Jewish values and tradition. Last year, ChanochLana’Ar trained 16 faculty and administrators in Jewish-based character development.

Gann’s ultimate goal is to engage half of thefull-time faculty and at least one-quarter ofthe student body in intensive characterdevelopment training.

SCIENCE ENRICHMENTStudents involved in Gann AcademyInventing New Engineering Solutions(GAINES) utilized engineering, computerautomated design, and other math and scienceskills to successfully complete innovativeprojects. The GAINES program is an important way for Gann to bring Science,Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)curriculum to its students through a hands-onapproach. Since its inception four years ago,Gann students have filed five patents. Thetwo most recent patents were filed by WyattMufson ’14 and Daniel Mangoubi ’14.

Wyatt’s invention is a shoe-cleaning doormat. The doormat cleans shoes viamotors connected to sponges with antisepticin them. As a person steps on the doormat, the sponges will spin to clean the shoe, and then when the person steps again, theshoe will be dried. He filed his patent thispast September.

Daniel’s invention is an electric heating jacket. It will have wires embedded in it likean electric blanket and sensors to turn it onand off depending on the wearer’s body temperature. He filed his patent at the end of last school year.

Both students are excited to continue working on their projects and to build prototypes of their inventions. They willform groups with other GAINES students

and work togetherto create real working models.

This fall, SteveDubin became the new ScienceEnrichmentCoordinator. Heoversees GAINESand the Robotics

Team and will also work to develop additionalways for students to get involved in science.

Seven Gann students joined the ForInspiration and Recognition of Science andTechnology (FIRST) Robotics community.Students designed, built, and programmed a robot to compete in various challenges. After winning top honors at New York’sFIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Championship, the team qualified to compete at the FTCWorld Championship in St. Louis in April. There they were honored once again withthe competition’s highest honors, winningthe INSPIRE AWARD. The INSPIRE AWARDis the most prestigious honor awarded by FTC and is given to the team who finishes among the top in all of the judging categories.

NEW ATHLETIC FIELDSGann used the summer time to update, improve and add to its outdoor athletic facilities. The upper field, located next to thetennis courts, has been completely renovatedto include expansion, laser leveling, new sod and an irrigation system. This significantupgrade provides a much improved playingsurface for all programs, but especially JVboys’/girls’ soccer and JV girls’ lacrosse, whohold nearly all of their home games on thefield. The lower field, located in the back of the building, also received a major renovation with the installation of a newsoftball diamond, complete with a skinnedinfield, dugouts and outfield fencing. The

new facility provides the softball programwith a much needed home game and practice site. These two renovation projectshave truly enhanced Gann’s already impres-sive athletic facilities and will provide Gannstudent-athletes with the opportunity to playon quality fields across all athletic programs.

TEEN ISSUES TASK FORCEGann Parents and Administrators cametogether this year to form a Teen Issues Task Force. The purpose of the task force isto align parents in the community to betterhelp students make healthy choices duringthe time they spend out of school.

The task force works to support effectivecommunication and education about teenissues between the school, parents and students, parents and their children, and

amongst the par-ent community.

Maximizingcommunicationand alignmentabout expecta-tions will support and nurture a healthy and positive cultureand foster positive behaviors

and choices among our students.

EXPLORATION WEEKOnce again Gann participated in its annualExploration Week. The goal of ExplorationWeek is to allow students to broaden theirhorizons, form strong bonds amongst theirpeers and their teachers, and introduce students to the world outside of GannAcademy. The entire school, including students, teachers and administrators took a break from classes and the day to day operations at Gann to participate in a weekof service, exploration, and new adventures.Exploration Week 2011 offered two tracks:local programs and travel trips. For the local

programs, students chose from working with inner-city youth in literacy programs, glass blowing, volunteering at organic farmsand soup kitchens, learning about InterfaithBoston and experiencing the art of Boston. Those who decided to travel away fromBoston spent time volunteering in NewOrleans for Hurricane Katrina Relief, working with Habitat for Humanity in North Carolina and New York, traveling toFlorida to experience Marine Biology, andflying across the country for Astronomy inNew Mexico. The students and faculty came back from ExplorationWeek more experienced, transformed and motivated.

“You’ll hear this a lot, but it really is true: the relationships among students and teachers are absolutely incredible. I have so many different teachers that I feel like I can talk to about anything, whether in the classroom or outside of it.”

“Over the past four years, my experience at Gann has largely been defined by my incredible teachers. Whether in a six-person English class in their office, or with twenty students in a classroom for Tanach, my teachers have alwaysmade the material we were learning—and the process itself—exciting, challenging and fun.”

––– SARAH FRIED, CLASS OF 2011

“For Yom HaZikaron we had an all-school ceremony, and afterwards everyone went outside and sang ‘Hatikva.’ The feeling of pride in Gann, the land of Israel, and the Jewish people touched my heart so deeply. As people reentered the school and dispersed throughout the hallways and classrooms, the entire building was overcome with an unbelievably powerful silence. Unforgettable!”

“At Gann there is both studying and learning, with the latter being the far more consistent approach to my education. Gann helped instill within me a love of learning, and while studying was undeniably a part of the experience, it is the passion that I have for discovering information and working the muscles of my brain that I will carry with me into the next chapter of my life.”
