St. Philip’s Academy seeks to provide a rigorous academic and moral

education to elementary and upper school (grades 5–8) children

of the city of Newark and its environs. St. Philip’s, a school in the Episcopal tradition, strives

to create within its students a love of learning, an intellectual curiosity, and a sense of duty

to the community that will enable them to make thoughtful and morally informed decisions

throughout their lives. Leadership qualities are developed in a culturally diverse experience.

The School exists to provide a unique educational opportunity for capable students, regardless

of their ability to pay, enabling them upon graduation to be successful in the most selective

secondary schools in the nation. We seek to provide a model of educational excellence, thereby

contributing to the revitalization of the city of Newark.

FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS, I was a journalist who covered schools and education policy for The New Yorker and The New York Times among other publica-

tions. I shadowed schools chancellors and principals, visited countless classrooms and wrote about charter programs and the small schools movement. But like an embedded war correspondent struck by the need, bravery and heroism all around me, I yearned to join those on the front lines of education reform.

Just out of college, I’d taught for three years through Teach for America. Last year, I decided to return to the classroom. Because of my experiences, I had some strong ideas about where I hoped to work and what an ideal school might look like. The problem was, I wasn’t sure such a fantasy school existed. Then I walked through the doors of St. Philip’s.

You step into a bright, sunny atrium, a word not usually asso-ciated with schools. The building has the sheen of a modern skyscraper combined with the old-world charm of an old chocolate factory. The walls are brightly painted. Classrooms are festooned with artwork and essays. Children gather around a SMARTboard to read an online interactive book as VGo, a mobile robot with a screen for a face that lets a student suffering from cancer join classes from home, scoots around a corner. In

a hallway, students crochet with the hand-work teacher. Under a canopy of solar panels, students learn about environmental science before venturing out onto the school’s rooftop garden. On the fourth floor, teachers circle round to collaborate on lessons plans, forever revising and debating their methods, as the smell of baking pies from “Pi Day” wafts down the hallway from the teaching kitchen.

As a teacher, journalist and parent, I’d witnessed such scenes in some of the nation’s best private schools. But this oasis of calm, curiosity and academic adventure was on Central Avenue in Newark, NJ, where the demands and challenges were similar to those in some of the most beleaguered public

schools. I rubbed my eyes. Was I seeing things? That was my first question. My second was, “Where do I sign up?”

I’m now about to begin my second year teaching 6th-grade English at St. Philip’s. As a journalist, I’ve come to expect the sound of the other shoe dropping. I have yet to hear that thud. The hours are long, the work occasionally grueling. But mostly I move through each day with a sense of privilege and awe: first and foremost about my students, past and present. There’s Kai, the computer whiz, who collects old 1970’s and 80’s computer consoles (such as that from the original Atari) and wrote John Lassiter, the founder of Pixar, a fan letter and now makes his own

animated shorts. And Nantambu, who always does more than the required reading, squeezing every last drop of learning out of my lessons as though they were a sponge, and he a man dying of thirst in the Sahara. There’s spunky Yaa Asia, the superb writer, who grills my every assertion with healthy skepticism, like some of my old colleagues at the Times. And Ciara, the track star and student athlete, whose hand is always up, reaching for the stars.

But most days, I feel like I’m the real student, learning the hard art of teaching from my varied, superhuman colleagues. There’s the 7th-grade English teacher and 20-something native of Jamaica, who is a master of the book group and classroom management. There’s the third-grade teacher who’s previously worked in schools on the most impoverished Native American reservations. There’s the Japanese karate expert, who is the most hard-working, dedicated math educator I’ve ever known, and the late-in-life business executive who sold his company for a handsome profit and is now teaching Honors Algebra to Upper School students. There’s the SoHo chef and cookbook author who runs the teaching kitchen. The music teacher with the voice like Sarah Vaughan’s. The Zen-like practitioner of acupunc-ture who teaches environmental science and the extraordinary technology staff that’s taught this middle-aged, lifelong learner how to use a SMARTboard and make the best use of Google Chromebooks. There’s the library staff combining tangible books with up-to-the-minute online resources. In many public schools, teachers are told to sink or swim. At St. Philip’s, there’s a flotilla of support devices buoying me along.

Last spring, we read poetry in my 6th-grade English class, and I was reminded of Auden’s lines, “Lucky, this point in time and space/Is chosen as my working-place,” and this is how I feel at St. Philip’s. In his poem, written during the global Great Depression, on the eve of the Second World War, Auden praises his colleagues “equal…in a ring,” “the eccentrics and the brilliant talkers,” and the atmosphere of abiding love that, even in a time of impending war, humans alone can create. Here, Auden writes:

Fear gave his watch no look The lion griefs loped from the shade… And Death put down his book.

In a city like Newark, the death is often all too real, not a mere literary trope. And in this fearsome world, St. Philip’s is a bulwark of change and hope for some of the nation’s neediest children. Here, we sometimes say, “the future of education is happening now.” But on these front lines, it’s also where the future of our country is happening now. If we can’t provide a meaningful education to all children, our future as a nation is bleak. I’ve joined the battle for a brighter future and hope you might, too.

George J. Mullen, Jr. Educational Fund

The George J. Mullen, Jr. Educational Fund was established this year in the memory of our dear friend and former Trustee, George Mullen, who served our community for over 15 years.  George was that “gentleman” you imagine when you say the words: honorable, cultured, courageous, ethical and wise. He was instrumental in the development of these values at St. Philip’s Academy. 

Donations from the Fund will be allocated toward student-focused educational purposes for our children that are in keeping with the values and memory of George.  Donors to the Fund are indicated with “†” after their name.

The endowment supports scholarships, faculty salaries, professional development and building improvements, as well as general operation expenses. A named endowment can be started with an initial investment of $25,000.
