From the Head of School

As we celebrate our school’s 50th Anniversary, one thing is clear: Augusta Prep is a great school thanks to the faithful, generous support of those who believe in the importance of our school in this community. Such support has manifested itself in so many different ways, from the dedication of 100 families who built the school in the early 60s, to those who saw the merger through in the late 80s, to those who, since 1992, have seen the school grow and expand in enrollment, programs and facilities. There is no doubt that Augusta Prep is poised for continued greatness.

One of the joys of the 50th Anniversary year has been welcoming alumni, former parents, former faculty, and even former headmasters back to the campus. The school’s second headmaster, Mr. Bob Goodman, and his wife, Ginny, were on campus for a tour in November. After the tour, Mr. Goodman commented, “the progress of the school in every way could only be labeled as outstanding.” As it turns out, Mr. Goodman is responsible for Steve Boyd coming to Augusta Prep. During his senior year at Davidson College, Mr. Boyd interviewed with Mr. Goodman, then in Virginia as a headmaster. Following the interview, Mr. Goodman communicated with Augusta Prep’s headmaster to recommend Mr. Boyd for a position teaching history and coaching. The rest, as they say, is history.

It has been my privilege, over the last twelve years, to serve the Augusta Prep community. The Halls love Augusta and Augusta Prep and each of us will look back on our time here with great fondness. Cathy and I are most grateful for the amazing education each of our children received from an incredibly talented faculty. Many thanks to each one of you for your support, and I know that you will welcome Becky Gilmore and her family with open arms when she begins as the tenth Head of School in July.

With gratitude,

Head of School

From the Board President

04On behalf of the Board of Trustees, welcome to the 2009-2010 Annual Report. Thanks to the support of our parents, alumni and friends, Augusta Prep continues to take steps forward. We remain on solid financial footing. Our endowment continues to grow, and with over $200,000 raised in our Annual Fund efforts we are able to keep our educational resources up-to-date, facilities upgraded and make sure our faculty and staff is receiving development opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills.

2010 marked the beginning of the year-long 50th Anniversary celebration. We are fortunate to be able to participate in such an exciting milestone in Prep’s history. I have no doubt on September 6, 2011 when we commemorate the school’s official birthday on Blanchard Field; we will look back over this extraordinary year with fond memories.

I’d also like to take a moment to thank our board members, faculty and staff. They work diligently each and every day to ensure Prep remains the best college preparatory school in the CSRA and they are truly invaluable. You will read profiles on some of our talented faculty members on the following pages. You will also read about our remarkable class of 2006, which boasts a 100% college graduation rate and offers their own testimonials about their education from Prep. In addition, this report features our Honor Roll of Donors and it’s quite an impressive list and for that we are extremely grateful.

Augusta Prep is worthy of your support because the world needs students who are innovative, determined, inquisitive and honest. Our commitment to this great school guarantees Prep will continue to help young people find their passion and purpose. On behalf of all us, thank you for helping to make the 2009-2010 year a success.

“Upon the subject of education, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject in which we as a people may be engaged.” - President Abraham Lincoln

Every parent owes it to his child to examine the quality of the education being delivered by the school – whether public or private. At Augusta Prep, our mission is to provide a college preparatory education of the very highest quality. This spring, I surveyed the Class of 2006 to see how well Augusta Prep prepared them for college. First, it should be noted that 100% of the class attended a four-year college or university and that every member of the class completed the survey. The findings are astounding and speak directly to the quality of a Prep education:

1. 100% of the Augusta Prep Class of 2006 will graduate from a four-year college or university.a. 70% of the class graduated from college in four years or less.b. 94% of the class has graduated or will graduate in 5 years or less.c. By contrast, the national 4-year college graduation rate was only 36% (private – 51%; public – 29%), according to a 2010 longitudinal study by the National Center for Education Statistics.

2. The cumulative college Grade Point Average for Augusta Prep’s Class of 2006 was 3.4.a. 84% of the class graduated with a GPA equal to or above 3.0b. 42% of the class graduated with a GPA equal to or above 3.5c. According to a 2010 Teachers College Record article (Rojstaczer & Healy), the average college GPA is 2.8.

3. 40% of the Augusta Prep Class of 2006 graduated from college with academic honors.a. 28% graduated with Honors, High Honors, and/or Phi Beta Kappa

b. 33% graduated Cum Laude (2%), Magna Cum Laude (19%) or Summa Cum Laude (12%)

4. The most common majors for Augusta Prep Class of 2006 were:

a. Biology or Chemistry – 20%b. Spanish and/or International Affairs – 20%c. Finance – 10%

5. The most common future plans for the Augusta Prep Class of 2006 include:

a. Medical School – 23%b. Masters Degree or Research – 18%c. Law School – 15%

These findings reinforce a critically important fact: according to a longitudinal study completed by the National Center for Education Statistics, success in college correlates most directly with the rigor of one’s high school curriculum (not SAT scores). Students may not want to be challenged academically, but they need to be. To the degree that you can, every parent should ensure that his child is being challenged at every stage of his or her education. As English zoologist Jane Goodall aptly noted, “If you really want something, and really work hard, and take advantage of opportunities, and never give up, you will find a way.”

Page 7: Annual Report 2010

Class of 2006 In Their Words

07

“I know without a doubt that I would not be starting medical school at my top choice medical school in two weeks if it weren’t for my time at Prep. I didn’t just learn math and history lessons while I was there, but I learned who I was, who I wanted to be, and how to accomplish the things I wanted most.” - University of South Carolina graduate

“Thank you, Augusta Prep, for challenging me to set new standards for myself. Through the rigorous AP classes offered, I was well above the rest of my classmates in terms of mental preparedness and breadth of knowledge. By excelling in my AP classes, I entered college as a sophomore and was able to graduate with 2 majors and a minor a whole semester early, thus saving a lot of money. Thanks for setting a great academic foundation for me to build upon in all my future endeavors.” - Emory University graduate

“It was easy to get comfortable at Prep. The amount of support, trust, and genuine concern that radiates through those halls is undeniable. I have been to my fair share of schools, and never before had I felt so honored to be a part of something so inspiring. Now when I look back at my days at Prep it all seems like a blur; a happy, blissful, challenging, and rewarding blur. But somewhere in that blur is what has made me into the person I am today, and that is what I want to thank you for.” - University of South Carolina graduate

Recently, 100% of the Augusta Prep Class of 2006 completed a survey evaluating how well Augusta Prep prepared each graduate for college. The following are quotes from that survey:

“I think Prep did an outstanding job preparing me for college. My college experience was wonderful. I had many opportunities to do things I never thought I would do. I got to study abroad, take interesting classes, and learn many different points of view. Thank you for giving me a great foundation!” - University of Mississippi graduate

“I wholeheartedly contribute my success at college to the incredible foundation I was given at Augusta Prep. I could not have asked for a better high school education and experience.” - University of South Carolina graduate

Mobley Moss '04Years of Teaching: 2Years @ Prep: 1 yearJob Description (in a nutshell): First grade teacher: math, language arts, social studies, science and how to be a first grader 101. Background:Birthplace: Augusta, GAFamily Information: parents are Larry & Anne Moss. Larry is president of Augusta Mortgage Company and Anne has been a teacher for 24 years and is currently a 4th grade teacher at EDS. I have three brothers Madison, Marc, & Daniel. Marc & I are both Prep graduates. I’m also the proud aunt of my 3-year-old nephew, Luke. Education (HS/College/Post): Augusta Preparatory Day School 2000-2004, Georgia College & State University 2004-2006, University of Georgia 2006-2010Undergrad: Bachelor of Science in Family & Consumer Sciences, Major: Child & Family Development, Early Childhood Education, Certified K-5, Emphasis in PK-2Graduate School: Master in Early Childhood EducationAwards/Achievements: 3.7 Undergraduate GPA (Cum Laude), Del Jones Memorial Scholarship recipient, 4.0 Graduate school GPA , Math & Reading EndorsementsWhat path led you to become a teacher? I used to play pretend “school” as a child. I believe that teaching has always been in my blood. My mom is a successful teacher who has been passionate about her job for many years. Her contagious enthusiasm has certainly had its impact on me. In addition to my natural interest in teaching I spent several college summers working at Winshape Camps for girls. I worked as a camp counselor and during my last summer I was asked to serve on the leadership team. I also spent three years in college serving as a small group elementary Sunday School teacher at Athens Church. All of these things combined have helped to affirm my love for kids and further explain the how I got to where I am today. What were you doing before becoming a teacher? Just prior to finishing my undergraduate degree and starting graduate school I spent a significant amount of time living overseas. I chose to do my student teaching at Bellaire Primary School in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. I spent three months teaching and assisting in a combined grade 1 & grade 2 classroom. It was fascinating to see the education world though a different lens halfway around the world. The experience itself ignited in me an interest in education at the international level. My adventure teaching and traveling far from home was life changing. Favorite thing about your job: I love the relationships that are established with students and co-teachers and seeing the tremendous growth of students throughout the course of the year. It’s a lot of fun to hear how first graders articulate their thoughts.Biggest surprise in teaching: That I would laugh and smile as much as I do... I didn’t realize how much someone could love his or her job.Hobbies/Activities: Photography, painting, writing, traveling & investing children of courseHow do they influence your teaching? Teaching young children requires a lot of creativity and flexibility. These interests of mine are put into action every day. Reflection is an important aspect of my job. I channel this through keeping a teacher journal. My travel experiences have allowed me to see education from another culture’s perspective.Words to live by: Live the life that unfolds before you. Who knows what the future holds? You just live the little bit of life that you can see in front of you. You live it well. And that gets you ready for whatever unfolds next.Life is about the journey not the destination.

Place of work: Formfast, St Louis, MOJob description: Own and manage a small healthcare software company with 50 employees based in St Louis, MO. I started the company 17 years ago in the back bedroom and sold $600 in year one. I couldn’t even get a good room in the house for my business. Company name is FormFast www.formfast.com. Background: Went to Amherst College class of 1971 majoring in sociology and received an MBA in marketing from Iona University in New York in 1976. I have been married to Susan for 35 years. I have one daughter Allison, Princeton class of 2008 and Vanderbilt Law, class of 2011. I sold electric yoyos on street corners for a year (as a result of majoring in sociology), worked for Standard Register, a business forms company for 19 years, worked for an eforms company for a year and then started FormFast.Favorite thing about my job: Not working for someone else! It wouldn’t go well.Words to live by: Either lead, follow or get the hell out of the way!Best advice I ever received: Don’t take any partners in your business. Advice to those still attending Prep: You are in a great place. Work hard and

play hard. My years at Augusta Prep were the best of my life…things were simpler back then. Now life is complex and constantly changing. That’s fun for a while but gets old. By the way, I’m 61 and you will be too. Hahahahahahahaha.Favorite Prep Memory or Memories: Hung an effigy of the headmaster from the flagpole…not appreciated. Stole the bleachers and hid them in the woods. That was way cool. However my favorite memories are in other areas where we will not go.Hobbies: I don’t really have any. I am chair of the Board for a homeless shelter and head some church committees. The fun

police may come and arrest me.

The jobs made me realize that I wanted something else to do with my life, but they also taught me that there are a lot of different roles needed to support the mission. Favorite thing about my job: All of it! It is surprisingly fun and rewarding. Despite some of the awful things that I see, I am constantly shown the power of hope and forgiveness. Words to live by: Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.Best advice I ever received: Always Keep Trying. Advice to those still attending Prep: Don’t make fast judgments. Keep your minds open to new ideas and new opportunities. Background: 2002 Graduate of Wake Forest UniversityFavorite thing about my job: Interacting with our clients and helping them achieve their goals. Traveling to golf tournaments all year long is not a bad part of the job either! Words to live by: Nothing great was ever achieved without hard work. Best advice I ever received: Get mad, then get over it. Advice to those still attending Prep: Enjoy it! It sure goes by quickly.Favorite Prep Memory or Memories: There isn’t really one particular memory that stands out to me, but the support the faculty showed for students both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities is unique and something I will never forget. It’s what makes Prep such a special place. During my senior year, our soccer team reached the state finals and our basketball team reached the final four; both were a big deal when considering where the teams had finished in the previous years. The successes of our sports teams while I was there are great memories and were a result of the hard work and camaraderie displayed by all of our students, faculty, and coaches. I also have to say, one other highlight was meeting my wife Caroline! Hobbies: Golf, soccer, biking, travel, and playing with our son Will.
