It is an inspiration to watch the Spirit working in the lives of Vanguard students,

Vanguard faculty and staff, and in our surrounding communities. The good work

that we’ve seen this past year has been truly transformational, and I am so pleased

to bring you a few of the highlights in this 2010–2011 annual report.

Beyond all expectations, the campus is thriving. At our 90th anniversary as an

institution, enrollment is near capacity and our students and professors are as

engaged as ever. We continue to focus on the accessibility of learning with small

class sizes and our professor-mentor approach. We also recognize that now more

than ever, the biblical and moral dimension of a Vanguard education is the key

to success for our graduates.

A number of resource programs that reach beyond our campus are making a real

impact. The Veterans Resource Center is a premier program of its type in the nation,

and the Global Center for Women & Justice continues to provide hope for women

by promoting the justice of Jesus Christ. I encourage you to explore these pages

and see a glimpse of all that God is doing here at Vanguard.

Vanguard University offers each student a unique opportunity to become the person

God created him/her to be. The Vanguard experience is, most profoundly, an experience

of learning. Learning at its best is a transformative experience with the living God

who created all things, and whose beauty, power and truth are revealed in Christ,

in Scripture, and in the extraordinary wonder of the natural world. Throughout

history, followers of Christ have engaged in learning as an expression of worship,

empowered by the Holy Spirit who will “lead us into all truth,” exploring with joy

and critical thought the dimensions of human experience.

Vanguard’s faculty lead students into this learning experience with deep care and

scholarly expertise, serving as professor-mentors who themselves are on this journey

of worship and discovery. Students have the opportunity to explore the best that

has been thought and said within the liberal arts tradition. They are deeply engaged

in service that informs and gives expression to their learning, equipping them for

GLOBAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & JUSTICE

:beyond the expectedTrue human tragedy goes unnoticed every day. Women are oppressed, beaten, and

subjugated to unimaginable horrors simply because of their gender. Thousands of

human lives are trafficked every year around the globe, and the problem is no less

severe here in the United States.

At Vanguard we are committed to promoting and protecting the inherent dignity

of all persons through the Global Center for Women & Justice. The work of the

Center raises awareness of these issues, while providing pathways for positive

change to occur.

Director Sandie Morgan continues to advance the Center’s mission at high-profile

conferences, seminars, and training events throughout the community and across

the globe. One particular area of focus has been on women’s rights in Iraq: bringing

attention to the plight of women there, while empowering them in their daily lives.

Sandie is a registered nurse, works with Duhok University in Iraq and with the

Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force.

The Center’s work also supports the undergraduate minor in women’s studies.

NEXT GENERATION OF CHRISTIAN LEADERS

:beyond leadership

ONE OF THE DISTINCTIVES OF A LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION SHOULD BE DEVELOPING THE

WHOLE PERSON, NOT JUST INSTILLING A SET OF QUANTIFIABLE SKILLS. VANGUARD

STRIVES TO HELP PREPARE STUDENTS NOT JUST FOR A JOB, BUT FOR LIFE, PROVIDING THEM

WITH THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO OVERCOME FUTURE UNKNOWN CHALLENGES, NOT

JUST THE IMMEDIATE. IN ESSENCE, HOW DO YOU TURN A STUDENT INTO A LEADER?

TRAINING FUTURE PASTORS: “The key to authentic and effective leadership depends

on the character of a person,” says Dr. Richard Israel, chair of the department

of religion. It’s this emphasis on the inner heart, not just a ministry instruction

manual that sets Vanguard’s programs apart.

Professors see themselves as mentors, not just instructors. In fact, alumni often

come back to campus for ongoing support, what Dr. Bill Dogterom calls “soul

care.” As associate professor of pastoral ministries, he spends as much time

outside of class with students as he does in a lecture hall.

“Our primary focus is not simply providing skills for the next five years, it is forming

persons for a lifetime,” he says. “We’re not only teaching them how to do the stuff of

ministry, but also walking with them through their character and spiritual formation.”

NEXT GENERATION OF CHRISTIAN LEADERS: Christine Brooks is one Vanguard

graduate student who knows how that commitment to character can change lives.

Along with working on her Master of Theology, she has also founded the Mika

Community Development Corporation and is on the leadership board for the

“One Church for Our City” initiative.

While serving different purposes, they both share a goal: to revitalize Costa Mesa

communities. Whether it’s helping a neighborhood build a community center or getting

churches to pool resources to address the homeless issue, Christine remains centered:

“I’m very interested in how my faith works out practically in community development.”

Both organizations were started with fellow Vanguard alums and have been assisted

by Vanguard professors and staff. “This isn’t just where Vanguard professors go to

work—it’s where they invest their ministry and their research and their lives.”

DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS

:beyond integration

It’s been another incredible year for the performing arts at Vanguard. Perhaps

most notable was that 2011 was the inaugural year of the Celebration of the Arts.

This five-day festival was an inspiring mix of exhibits, workshops, conferences, and

performances that infused the campus with a new sense of wonder and imagination.

Vanguard has long been at the forefront of promoting the arts and providing an

encouraging atmosphere for artists to meld their faith with their passion. From jazz

bands to barbershop, from Shakespeare to Godspell, our campus has been filled

with creativity. And with the individual attention and mentorship paid by our

distinguished professors, the next generation of artists coming out of Vanguard

is better equipped and more experienced than ever.

“We need creativity,” says theatre major Emily Rose ’04, who was excited the

minute she heard about the Celebration of the Arts. The staff, faculty, and students

of Vanguard couldn’t agree more.

VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER — SCHOOL FOR PROFESSIONAL STUDIES

When we say that Vanguard University’s roots run deep in the military, we mean

it literally and figuratively. Our property sits atop the former Santa Ana Air Base,

and we were the first university in California authorized by the government to train

chaplains during World War II.

Continuing that legacy in 2011, Vanguard remains at the forefront of veterans

advocacy. In fact, we were recently voted one of the top two universities in America

for veterans to attend, offering an elite level of post-service support to the men and

women who have served our country.

From dedicated academic advisors to our fully funded Yellow Ribbon Scholarship

Program to the Veterans Courtyard of Honor, our Veterans Resource Center at

Vanguard University stands alone in how we serve the mind, body and soul of veterans.

Vanguard University reports a significantly improved financial position for the fiscal

year 2010-11. While the economic downturn continues to impact endowments and

investments, we have seen significant results from new strategies and enrollment

methodologies, positive advancement activities, and a focus on internal process

improvement. We continue to review and improve our systems and to prioritize

alignment of budget with University priorities. And we are seeing the fruit of those

efforts in our finances.

We continue to closely monitor our Key Performance Indicators. We are still in

a state of financial exigency, but show sustained improvement trending in each

indicator. Income source generation, alignment of budget with goals, and disciplined

budget monitoring have continued as priority disciplines in this effort.

Sustained efforts in the business and finances of the University will continue to

enable us to equip each student for a Spirit-empowered life of Christ-centered

leadership and service.

of June 30, 2011 and the related consolidated statements of activities and cash flows

for the year then ended. These consolidated financial statements are the responsibility

of the University’s management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these

consolidated financial statements based on our audit.

We conducted our audit in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted

in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform

the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the consolidated financial

statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes consideration of

internal control over financial reporting as a basis for designing audit procedures

that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing
