A girl in front of a housing development in
New Andoung, Cambodia. Five years ago,
people were moved here from the capital
city Phnom Penh in a forced eviction.
Development aid starts at the bottom. It’s not that weare against huge supranational organizations, we justthink that there are more efficient ways to build a betterfuture for all – humans, animals, nature.
HelP
While I’m writing these lines for the double annual report
2009/2010 of the associtation basmati we are about to «cele-
brate» the third birthday of our organisation. We’re not really
celebrating it, but we look back in pride at what we achieved in
the last couple of years, especially during the last months.
By now, basmati – authentic help evolved to something we
think is worth promoting and advertising on a bigger scale.
That’s why we intensified our mission to get new supporters
beginning with the last months of 2010. And it was a success:
In December 2010 we welcomed our first official supporting
members. And also te the rest of 2010 was a successful year
for the association. However, after three years still, we are at the
beginning of a long journey.
A long journey, sure. But we’re confident that we are on the
right track. Of course we hope you will be travelling with us in
the future.
A very warm thank you for your ongoing support!

AnnuAl report 2009/2010eDITOrAl
The big final at a book party from Big Brother
Mouse – every pupil gets his own (first) book.
And there are plenty to chose from.
2009 was a year of contrasts for association basmati: on the one
hand, it was an exciting, eventful and exciting year in Southeast
Asia, on the other hand it remained relatively calm back home.
Due to personal commitments in private and professional life
there just wasn’t enough time to care intensely about basmati.
Also, the year had started with a tragic message:
Nader ebrahimi, the restless founder and director of Aziza‘s
Place and Motomedix (and a good friend from the very first
days of basmati - authentic help), died unexpectedly in an
accident. Fortunately Alexandra robbins, a volunteer from the
early beginnings of Aziza’s Place, took over and looked after the
place very well and with lots of love.
Most of the projects we visited in 2009 were a premiere to us,
or at least not we were not too familiar with them:
CHIBODIA (CAMBODIA)
At our first meeting in 2008, Sam Pehlke from Chibodia took us
on a ride to udong to show the school he was building there,
almost out of nothing. 2009 it was the even newer children’s
home he founded in Phnom Penh he wanted to show us. We
saw a place set up with so much empathy and love, perfection
and pragmatism, we could only smile all the way long. It see-
med almost as if Sam, a friend of Nader, would carry on Nader’s
eagerness: after all, they were co-founders of the mobile clinic
Motomedix.
FuTure CAMBODIA FuND (CAMBODIA)
The organisation that ran the Happy Garden Center at the relo-
cation site Andoung weren’t on the lucky side in 2009. The last
woman standing, Penny rickard, had to give up the place later
in 2009 because of a lack of money. But by now new, stronger
structures are built in Andoung (see our review 2010).
BIG BrOTHer MOuSe (lAO PDr)
We knew it from the very start: We would instantly fall in love
with Big Brother Mouse! A year ago Tony Fish from FSD lao
showed us their bookstore in Vientiane. Officially, BBM isn’t
just another NGO in laos, it’s a publisher with a lao owner.
They publish loads of books for reading, writing, playing and
drawing – in a country where hardly any child has ever seen
a coloured book, not to speak of owning one. The books are
given away during so called book parties. We had the great
honor to attend one in the luang Prabang area – and let me tell
you: It was a pure pleasure!
C.O.P.e. (lAO PDr)
C.O.P.e. is an orthopedy center in Vientiane, the capital city
of lao. Victims of bombies, mines but also traffic and other
accidents can apply for a free prostethic at C.O.P.e. Besides
that, C.O.P.e. runs a bizarre museum that explains almost every-
thing about the tragic heritage of laos: the tons of thousands of
bombs still laying beneath the ground.
CHIlD’S DreAM (THAIlAND)
It was rather a goodwill visit at Child’s Dream in Chiang Mai, an
organisation founded by two Swiss. They are quite big and
well funded, so we do not really have to worry. What we find
interesting about Child’s Dream is the mixture of projects they
run themselves throughout Southeast Asia. They even managed
to set up projects in Burma, which is very difficult. We stay in
touch and hope that one day we can work on a project with
Child’s Dream.
review 2009SO MuCH TO DO, SO lITTle TIMe
For some the way to the first book ever
in laos: Direction sign for Big Brother
Mouse in luang Prabang.
After the book party: The kids bring the
spare books to the school where they
can be swaped.
2010 was kind of the opposite of 2009: A lot of engagement
back home, reduced work in Southeast Asia. We welcomed our
fourth board member in January, Susanne Soo Jin, whos (highly
needed) help is very much appreciated.
With spring time (when some time-consuming private com-
mitments ended) came a refurbished motivation to promote
our oganisation. We enforced the communication on different
digital channels (such as facebook, twitter, youtube, amazee,
flattr, jumo) and gave our website a redesign to adjust it to the
actual content. More information requires a clearer view on the
things. At last we added some articles to our constitution to
enable other people to join in association basmati as a passive
supporting member.
regarding our research activity, it was rather calm in 2010.
unfortunately a lot of meetings had to be cancelled short hand
due to different reasons. But there still were some highlights:
CHIBODIA (CAMBODIA)
Sam and Anne had moved their children’s home from the nor-
thern Phnom Penh area (which was prone to floodings) to the
russian Market area in the city. Their new house is just amazing,
with loads of space for everything, a nice, sandy playground
and huge, inviting stairs to the upper floor. everything the 23
children need is there. Furthermore, Sam told us about the
drainage system they were about to build in Andoung. A very
ambitious project, but a very much needed one – and the
logical step within the mission of Chibodia. This one is set on
our agenda 2011 already!
BIG BrOTHer MOuSe (lAO PDr)
The number of books from BBM ist impressive – as impressive
as the book parties. Although we sponsored a book party ear-
lier in 2010, we could not attend a second one when we were
visiting BBM in luang Prabang (at the time we were in the city, all
schools were closed for summer holidays).
AzIzA’S PlACe (CAMBODIA)
A new roof, a refurbished indoor area and a separate floor in a
neighbouring house for the older boys at Aziza’s Place: Thanks
to Ali and Dan a lot of things happened there since our last visit.
We were saddened to learn that they planned to go back home
by the end of 2010. But we know they left structures that will
endure and thus we don’t have to worry about Aziza’s Place.
review 2010leSS TrAVellING, MOre WOrk TO DO
A sewage system is what lacks
here, but Chibodia works on it
already (between houses/sheds in
New Andoung).
Sports are fun: Besides karate and dancing
classes soccer is on the weekly sports list
of Aziza’s Place (Phnom Penh).
Colourful home at Chibodia’s Children‘s
Home in Phnom Penh.
Our actual course and especially the developments in recent
months let us look forward to an exciting, intense and success-
ful year.
On the one hand, we want to intensify relations to our already
listed projects in 2011. Thus we hope to finally publish all you
need to know about Chibodia, Big Brother Mouse and eDF lao
on our website. On the other hand, we are very much looking
forward to exploring new opportunities. In late 2010 we got in
touch with Belgian organisation Apopo – they let trained rats
search for landmines in Africa and are about to «export» their
fantastic idea to Cambodia. Another interesting issue we will be
following this year is a new and ambitious project of an inde-
pendent information platform in Cambodia. Check our website
later this year to find out more about our progresses.
Another bis issue for 2011 will be getting new supporters for
basmati – authentic help. Our supporter’s contribution to our
mission is extremely valuable. regular recurrent payments give
us a better planning dependability. Should we reach a noble
number of supporters, we at basmati – authentic help will be
able to help better or even support something really big. For ex-
ample we could build a school (or at least a big portion of it).
Again we’re aiming for a donation level of at least 25‘000
Swiss Francs in 2011 – let’s see if we can accomplish this goal
this year. For sure we need your help for that.
ForecAst 2011
On the road to New Andound.
As mentioned previously, we have taken first tentative steps
in terms of fundraising during the last couple of months. Still,
the expenses of association basmati are almost exclusively
borne by the board members themselves. The main part of the
expenses in the years 2009 and 2010 originate from costs for
research trips. Third-party donations and membership fees will
be cumulated for the supported projects or bigger tasks.
