1. Letter of the President

This year we also renewed our agreement with theSpanish Ministry of Health. The renewal reaffirms acommon desire to develop the Spanish Bone MarrowDonor Register (REDMO), managed by ourFoundationFoundation.

At present, The José Carreras Foundation, usesREDMO to work with the 30 Spanish hospitals thatprovide bone marrow transplants.

The Foundation has access to more than 14 millionbone marrow donors and more than 400,000umbilical cord blood units throughout the world, ofwhich over 80,000 and 40,000, respectively, areSpanish donors.

After more than 20 years fighting against leukaemia,we set out a new challenge: to improve the patient’squality of life and find a definitive cure for thisdisease.

To this end, the Foundation has decided to initiate anew project with the Catalan Public Administration:

Throughout these pages you will find out more aboutthe projects in which we participate to help makepatients’ plans a reality. We really want patients to beable to achieve their dreams with society’s supportand this is why we have created a number of digitalplatforms for them to share their plans.

p jthe first research centre exclusively focused onleukaemia and other hematologic diseases. It will bethe first centre of its kind in Spain and one of fewthroughout the world.

The José Carreras International Research Institutewill be unprecedented. With the work andprofessionalism of an international team ofresearchers, the Institute will use the most innovativetechnologies to win the battle against leukaemia. No se puede mostrar la imagen. Yet as we work to achieve this objective, it is alsonecessary to improve patient care and to try toimprove their quality of life.

In response to this challenge, this year theFoundation presented two new programmes inSpain: the Residential Transplant ApartmentsProgramme and the Umbilical Cord Blood Office.

REDMO works with more than 100 hospitals in Spain, including third-level centres accredited for performingtransplants of hematopoietic stem cells from bonemarrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord bloodfrom non-family donors. At present, these are thethree sources from which the cells transplanted to thepatient are obtained. Likewise, REDMO receivessearch requests for foreign patients through the sameinternational registers.

In 2009, 682 compatible donations were found for atotal of 450 patients. The hospitals requesting them, which were part of the public health system, carriedout 354 transplants in 2009. The average time taken tofind a compatible bone marrow donor in 2009 was 50days.

Countries of origin for umbilical cord blood This year we reached a total of 41,771 umbilical cordblood units stored in Spain and available to anySpanish or foreign patient requiring them. With morethan 40,000 units, Spain has the third largest numberof units of stored umbilical cord blood in the world, after the USA and Taiwan.

deepen the study of the mechanisms by whichleukaemia and other blood related cancers develop, with the ultimate goal of developing diagnosticprocedures and treatment and improving theirprecision. These mechanisms must be directed moreand more concretely towards resolving or avoidingdamage created by the growth and proliferation ofmalignant cells through the identification of newtherapeutic courses and the application of newtreatments.

Residential Transplant Programme with the HospitalClínic in Barcelona and has an apartment available inclose proximity to the medical centre. The HospitalClínic project is the only one of its kind in Spain andhas been in operation since 2003. As part of thissystem, patients who live in the city are able to returnto their house the day following a transplant and willreceive check-ups by a nurse once or twice a day. Atpresent, patients who live more than one hour by carfrom the Hospital Clínic at peak time are excludedp pfrom this service. However, patients who are unable tomake use of this type of transplant because they livefar away from the hospital can make use of theResidential Transplants Programme thanks to theapartment provided by the Foundation.

Three great forces were involved in the birth of theproject:

1. The will of José Carreras, his family and theFoundation to continue their fight that beganmore than 20 years ago with the goal oferadicating leukaemia.

2. The excellent level of science already foundin Catalonia, specifically in the field ofhaematology

3. The goal of the Generalitat de Catalunya toconsolidate their network of research centresand form a pioneering biotechnology andbiomedicine research facility.

This project will be the first Spanish researchcentre to focus exclusively on leukaemia andother blood related diseases, and one of the

4. TO KNOW TO WHAT EXTENT WE HAVE WIPED OUT THE DISEASE

OUR CHALLENGE

In order to be able to make more concrete decisionsregarding the treatment of patients, we must continueto work towards a better understanding of themolecular characteristics of each disease. In this way itis possible to identify the minimal residual diseasebeneath the treatment undergone and to know to whatextent we have completely wiped out the disease.

5. TO FIND A MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR EVERY PATIENT

The concept of malignant blood diseases covers adiverse group of illnesses. Broadly speaking, theyinclude leukaemias, lymphomas, myelomas, andmyeloproliferative and myelodysplastic syndromes. While each illness requires its own concrete objectives,it is possible to set out seven general objectives which

We already know that each patient reacts to a givenmedicine in a different manner and that theymetabolize it in a different way. By studying how apatient metabolizes a drug on an individual basis, wecan become more effective and use less toxicmedicines. For this reason, we have a goal in the fieldof pharmacology.

EVERY PATIENT

p g jwe aimed for with the creation of the José CarrerasInstitute for Leukaemia Research

1. TO FIND A CURE NOT PROLONG THE ILLNESS

In some cases new treatments have been identifiedthat are extremely effective in prolonging patients’lives but they do not cure them Out challenge is to getlives, but they do not cure them. Out challenge is to getto the heart of the problem: the affected cells. Byunderstanding the disorder at a molecular level, wewill be able to develop new treatments to cure thepatient. One such opportunity is provided by thetransplant of hematopoietic stem cells (bone marrowand umbilical cord blood). This is a treatment whichcan cure the patient.

2. TO CATEGORIZE ILLNESSES INTO THEIR

6. TO BETTER UNDERSTAND COMMON COMPLICATIONS

2. TO CATEGORIZE ILLNESSES INTO THEIR DIFFERENT SUBTYPES

In order to make progress in developing specializedtreatments for each illness, we must first know what tocall them. Only by doing this will we be able todiscover individual treatments: therapeutic targets.

3. TO REDUCE THE SIDE-EFFECTS OF SOME TREATMENTS

The problem lies not only in better understanding thedevelopment of each illness but also in developingcontrol over the most common complications sincemany patients are lost as a result of a complication, often an infection, and not because of their ownillness. The key examples with respect to this objectiveare thromboses and haemorrhages, all too common inhaematology patients.

The rates of cure for many types of malignant blooddiseases are improving every day, but the patients stillpay a very high price. Many of the treatments areextremely toxic and have a large number of side-effects(e.g. chemotherapy, radiotherapy). We must ensurethat they are cured with the minimum possible side-effects.

TREATMENTS

7. TO GET THERE IN TIME

An important research area is in studies to predict theappearance of malignant blood diseases based on thegenetic characteristics of the population. It is alwaysbetter to be in front of the disease than behind it.

The Foundation campaigns are a perfect occasion toharness people’s feelings towards the fight againstleukaemia. They also present a suitable opportunityto inform society about out support. We seek topromote active participation and to develop a socialcharity movement.

A disease such as leukaemia affects people of all agesand from very different backgrounds. For all of them, the immediate goal is to recover, but they all have aplan for the future that gives them the strength tofight against the illness. No matter how big or smallthose plans may be, the José Carreras Foundationwants to know about them! We asked everyone whowants to know about them! We asked everyone whowas fighting against leukaemia at the time to sharetheir plans for the future with us and let society knowabout them.

8. New corporate identityAfter more than 20 years of history, we believe thefight against leukaemia has improved in many areas.Throughout the course of this fight, the Foundationhas also improved: we are a continually growingforce, the Bone Marrow Donor Register hasexpanded considerably, we have reached out to theworld with our annual campaigns for raisingawareness... but, among other things, there remainedone important element that needed to be changed:our corporate imageour corporate image.

It seemed to us that to modernize completely wouldrequire us to present a new image to society, one thatwas more modern and close while at the same timemaintaining the values of seriousness, rigour andtransparency.
