President’s MessageTo the Friends of Schenectady County Community College:

As I enter my second year as President of Schenectady County Community College, it is my esteemed pleasure to continue serving a growing, diverse and dedicated student body with such a caring and capable faculty and staff. We continue to make great strides in continuing our mission of excellence and accessibility, and the results have been extraordinary.

Increasingly, SCCC is becoming a first-choice college for those who have just graduated from high school as well as older students returning to college to develop their skills, expand their knowledge and increase their marketability to employers and four-year transfer schools.

Great things are happening at Schenectady County Community College. We are excited to announce:

Not only will we be able to provide job training in health care to Temporary Assistance to Needy Families recipients and low-income students, but through this funding the College is embracing a new program to meet an emerging workforce need in the health care industry, as well as to stimulate economic development in the Capital Region.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about all that’s happening at SCCC. As you read through this year’s Annual Report, you will see how busy and productive the 2009-10 academic year was. We look forward to your continued support of our events, programs and mission.

President unveils Strategic PlanDr. Quintin Bullock, President of SCCC, unveiled the College’s new Strategic Plan in August 2010. The new student-centered plan, effective September 1, 2010, with the theme Gateway to Excellence, provides a framework for the College to move ahead with a clear set of objectives in support of the SCCC Mission and Vision statements.

In December 2009, regional business and economic development leaders were invited to participate in a Strategic Planning Summit at the College. They shared their insight, providing crucial information in the areas of curriculum and workforce development.

The College’s Strategic Planning Council then identified 17 core values and 41 key objectives, addressing four major College goals: (1) strengthen excellence in teaching and learning, (2) enrich the student experience, (3) enhance the campus physical environment, and (4) respond positively and responsibly to fiscal challenges. These goals support the College’s interests including fostering effective and efficient communication, strengthening the use of technol-ogy, attracting students to SCCC and developing the campus to serve as an anchor in Schenectady County and the Capital Region. A draft Strategic Plan was reviewed with the College commu-nity during eight comprehensive focus group sessions in Spring 2010, and session feedback was incorporated into the Plan. The Strategic Plan was then approved by Dr. Bullock and endorsed by the SCCC Board of Trustees.

High school juniors utilize compound microscopes during a Microbiology workshop at the College.

Bacterial Resistance to Antibiotics (MRSA), pathogens, foodborne and waterborne diseases may not be on the typical class schedule for most high school juniors. But for a group of teenagers from schools in the Capital Region who visited the College in April 2010, those were the subjects they discussed with Associate Professor Renato Tameta during his Microbiology classes.

University in the High School remains popularTheUniversityintheHighSchool(UHS)programsawanincreaseof 11 percent in the last academic year, as more and more students were able to gain college credit for SCCC courses taken in their own high schools.

UHSistheCollege’sconcurrent enrollment program, and students earn the credits by taking the courses as part of their normal high school schedule, taught by SCCC-approved high school instructors. This “jump start” on college credits can save significant amounts of time and money for students. The students also report being more ready for college courses once they enter their postsecondary careers.

Last year the College processed more than1,900UHSregistrations.About130 courses were offered at 18 institutions. SCCC takes a leadership role in concurrent education in that the coordinator of the program serves as the elected secretary of the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships, which accredits concurrent enrollment programs.

New academic programsDuring Summer 2010, SCCC announced the debut of four new academic programs and the revamping of another for Fall 2010.

The Air Traffic Control A.A.S. degree program, a partnership with the Schenectady County Airport, will pro-vide students with a foundation in air traffic control basics and skills for the continuous safe flow of aircraft in the airspace system. SCCC is one of only three colleges in the country to offer “live” tower training.

Graduates of the Alternative Energy Technology A.A.S. degree program will be prepared for employment as qualified technicians in the emerging energy fields of solar and wind energy technology or battery and fuel cell energy technology.

The revamped/renamed Computer Networking Systems and Cyber Security A.A.S. degree program addresses increased concerns about network and computer security and provides both a theoretical and hands-on foundation in these areas using industry-standard hardware and software, including computer forensics.

The Criminal Justice A.S. degree program will prepare students for transfer into related programs at a four-year college or university.

The Storage Battery Technology Certificate program was developed in collaboration with GE to produce qualified technicians for GE’s new sodium storage battery plant in Schenectady.

“These programs are examples of collaborations between faculty and professionals in the field that result in quality academic programs,” said Dr. Penny A. Haynes, Vice President of Academic Affairs.

SCCC Foundation

2009-2010 SCCC Foundation Board of Directors

Types of GiftsDear Friends:

The momentum generated in 2009 with the arrival of our new President, Dr. Quintin Bullock, the national spotlight on the importance of community colleges, the development of a new strategic plan and the creation of outstanding new academic programs helped SCCC thrive in 2010. Much of SCCC’s success in the past year was due to the generous support of our many donors. On behalf of the entire Foundation Board, I wish to express our gratitude to all of our donors: those that continually support the Col-lege, as well as our many new donors.

The Foundation continued to strength-en its resources through tremendously successful celebrations like the 40th Anniversary Gala and Food For Thought and All That Jazz. Funds generated by these very special events, as well as generous contributions to our Annual Fund, provide crucial support to students through scholar-ships and grants, as well as essential professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.

SCCC contributes greatly to our community’s quality of life by providing affordable education to stu-dents throughout the Capital Region. And as more and more of our graduates enter the local work force, their contri-butions to the economic vitality of the region cannot be underestimated.

As I move into the role of Immediate Past Chair, I’d like to thank my colleagues on the Foundation Board for their dedication to providing SCCC students with greater academic opportunities. Looking forward, I’m confident that SCCC’s collaborations with various stakeholders through-outSUNY,SchenectadyCounty,andin fact, the entire Capital Region will continue to generate positive synergy and growth. As SCCC’s enrollment continues to increase, and our excellent academic programs continue to meet the changing workforce needs of Tech Valley, our work becomes an even more important element in the economic success of our community and state.

Thank you again for all you do to strengthen our College.
