Mission Statement The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art promotes the power of the arts to inspire and educate people and enrich their lives. To this purpose the museum builds and maintains exemplary art collections and produces a wide variety of challenging, innovative exhibitions and stimulating educational programs. As an integral part of the University of Florida, the museum advances teaching and research and serves as a catalyst for creative engagement between the university and diverse local, state, national and international audiences.

Director’s MessageAfter closing all museum galleries, with the exception of the Mary Ann Harn Cofrin Pavilion, for renovation during summer 2006, the museum reopened fall semester with beautifully refinished stone and hardwood floors, new carpet and freshly painted walls. The museum was able for the first time to dedicate a gallery to the permanent collection of photography alongside other galleries for the African, Asian, modern and contemporary art collections.

During fiscal year 2006-2007 the Harn originated several exhibitions with accompanying catalogues, beginning with Spinach Green and Mutton-fat White: Chinese Jades of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) organized by Curator of Asian Art Charles Mason, and Resonance and Inspiration: New Works by Magdalene Odundo organized by Curator of African Art Susan Cooksey, which opened at the Harn and traveled to the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College. Jointly curated by Professor Achamyeleh Debela of North Carolina Central University and I, Continuity and Change: Three Generations of Ethiopian Artists traveled from the Harn to the Diggs Gallery at Winston-Salem State University. Finally, Cuba Avant-Garde: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Farber Collection, organized by Curator of Contemporary Art Kerry Oliver-Smith, opened here and continued to the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, the first in a series of venues for this exhibition.

The Harn Museum of Art joined other University of Florida and community museums to host the Florida Association of

Museums annual meeting in September 2006, welcoming colleagues from across the state to Gainesville. During spring semester 2007 the Harn joined UF’s College of Fine Arts, School of Art and Art History and Center for African Studies in hosting the Triennial Symposium of the Arts Council of the African Studies Association, an international conference with more than 300 participants.

We are delighted to share the collections and exhibitions of the Harn Museum of Art by welcoming visitors from near and far to our facility on the University of Florida campus, by traveling our exhibitions to museums across the country and by producing publications that contribute to the international exchange of research and ideas.

Art of the Ethiopian HighlandsJanuary 23 – May 6, 2007S.F.I. Rotunda Curator: Director Rebecca Martin Nagy This installation showcased the museum’s collection of mural paintings, icons, illustrated manuscripts, bronze processional crosses and wooden hand crosses used in Christian churches in the Ethiopian highlands. A highlight of the exhibition was the rare 25-foot-long mural painting portraying the war of King Takla Haymanot with the Dervishes, on which clothing, royal regalia, armor, weaponry and horse trappings are rendered in great detail, providing insight into customs of an earlier period. Made possible by the C. Frederick and Aase B. Thompson Foundation.

ACASA Triennial Conference The Harn Museum co-sponsored the 14th Triennial Symposium on African Art of the Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA) from March 28 to April 1, 2007, along with the College of Fine Arts, School of Art and Art History and Center for African Studies. While some Triennial sessions were open only to conference registrants, others were free and open to the public, including the keynote address by Okwui Enwezor, an internationally recognized scholar and curator of contemporary art, on March 29 at the University Auditorium. The theme for the Fourteenth Triennial, “Global Africa,” addressed the ways in which African and Diaspora arts have played and increasingly continue to play a part in international and trans-cultural exchanges. The conference co-chairs were University of Florida professor of art history Robin Poynor and Harn Museum of Art Director Rebecca Martin Nagy.

The Harn acquired a striking headdress made by the Bamana people of Mali known as an “aardvark crest” or n’gonzon koun, and also as chi wara (farming animal). The headdress is a fine example of its type—a horizontally configured composite animal form. It is a much welcomed addition to the African collection, not only because Bamana art was previously underrepresented in the collection but also because it was made by a recognized workshop in a specific region—a rare quality of African art in Western collections.

African Arts of Healing and DivinationFebruary 20 – June 24, 2007Gallery C Curator: Curator of African Art Susan Cooksey This exhibition explored African arts used in healing and divination practices, represented by works in the Harn collection and from 5 private collections. It included a total of 72 artworks, in a range of mediums including sculpture, painting, textiles and metalwork. Themes within the exhibition included the arts of several divination systems, healing and fertility, spiritual protection, and contemporary health issues. Two videos accompanied the exhibition, including one on Yaka divination by Rene Devische, and one on divination in Burkina Faso by Susan

Cooksey. Made possible by the Center for Arts in Healing, Research and Education (CAHRE) and friends of the Harn Museum of Art.

IMAGinING TOBIAJanuary 23 – May 6, 2007Langley Foyer Curator: Director Rebecca Martin Nagy The triptych video installation by artist Salem Mekuria accompanied Art of the Ethiopian Highlands from the Harn Museum Collection. IMAGinING TOBIA is an exploration of the lush southern as well as the forbiddingly rugged but starkly beautiful northern landscapes of Ethiopia. Mekuria uses the triptych, a reference to Ethiopia’s ancient religious art form and ubiquitous in Ethiopian everyday life, to juxtapose, layer and contrast glimpses of this landscape, opening a space for making multitudes of meanings and associations. Japanese Shoki Imari Jar, Edo Period (1615-1868), mid 17th century Glazed porcelain, 9 in. (22.9 cm) high Museum purchase, funds provided by the Kathleen M. Axline Endowment, 2006.14

The term “shoki Imari” literally means “early Imari” and is a popular designation used by collectors to describe Imari wares dating from the first three-quarters of the 17th century.

This Shoki Imari Jar is painted with blue landscape roundels and it has molded chrysanthemum and rope designs on its neck and shoulder. Although the basic form and decorative motifs of the jar are derived from Chinese and Korean models, the overall aesthetic of the piece is very Japanese and shows how Japan’s porcelain factories near the town of Arita on the island of Kyushu evolved to express native tastes and sensibilities. Early Imari porcelain of such high quality is extremely rare outside of Japan. This vase comes to the Harn from a private English collection, but it has been exhibited and published in Japan. As a product of Japan’s first porcelain kilns, the vase fills an important historical niche in the Harn’s collection of Japanese ceramics and also provides connections to the Chinese and Korean ceramic collections.

Theodore Robinson was one of the first American artists to embrace the innovations of the French Impressionist movement. Between 1887 and 1892, he spent half of each year in Giverny, France, where his mature artistic style—characterized by powerful design, atmospheric effects and lively surface texture—evolved under the direct influence of Claude Monet. Painted at Giverny in the summer of 1891, Afternoon Shadows owes its inspiration to Monet’s haystack series of the mid 1880s and 1890-91. Upon his return to New York in 1892, Robinson became an important teacher of Impressionist plein-air painting at the Brooklyn Art School and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Clarence Hudson White American, 1871-1925Drops of RainPhotogravure, Camera Work, No. 23, 19087 5/8 x 6 1/8 in. (19.3 x 15.5 cm)Gift of Ben and JoAnne Adams, 2006.41.2

Clarence White’s Drops of Rain is a masterful example of the early 20th-century soft-focus pictorial style highly influenced by painting, especially Impressionist tradition. But its dramatic simplified, almost abstract composition, also suggests much more forward looking innovations. The close-up view of the perfect sphere of the glass ball is offset by the tightly cropped profile of a face at the extreme right margin of the frame. Most importantly as a harbinger of the modernist “straight” photography that was to take full form in the next decade with the maturing work of Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand, White’s primary subject is light itself in the way it defines and animates the glass sphere, and echoes in the patterns of drops of rain across the window screen.

This luminescent photogravure was published in Stieglitz’s influential journal, Camera Work, a primary outlet for Photo Secession photography as well as innovative critical writing in the first two decades of the last century. White’s photogravure is part of a group of five Camera Work gravures generously donated to the Harn by a recent MFA graduate, JoAnne Adams, and her husband, Ben. These gifts are magnificent additions to the Harn’s growing photography collection and a wonderful reflection of the Harn’s special opportunities and responsibilities as an important component of the ongoing educational mission of the University.

American Matrix: Contemporary Directions for the Harn Museum Collection Part IIMay 23 – October 29, 2006Mary Ann Harn Cofrin Pavilion The focus of this inaugural exhibition in the Cofrin Pavilion was the post-World War II era, a time of extraordinary innovation when the United States emerged as a world center for contemporary art. This shared legacy created the matrix for artists who in various ways engaged in the contradictions and promise of American life. The exhibition explored certain artistic trajectories including the exploration of subjective expression, an engagement with social and political issues and a concentration on conceptual modes of practice. The 27 artists in the exhibition included Alexander Calder, David Smith, Barnet Newman, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Sol LeWitt, Allan Sekula, Catherine Opie, Laylah Ali, Andrea Robbins and Max Becher, among others. Nets-Infinity (TWOS) represents Yayoi Kusama’s signature “net paintings,” abstract works with circular and repetitive patterns suggesting dimensions of time and space. Kusama, often referred to as Japan’s greatest living artist, has lived and worked in New York City and Japan while creating a large body of work in painting, sculpture, collage, installation, film and performance. She gained considerable recognition in New York in the 1950s and 1960s and exhibited with many influential artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns before returning to Japan in the 1970s. She is considered to have anticipated many aspects of Pop, Minimalism and Post-Minimalism.
