52 YEARSOF EMPOWERING SENIORS TO REMAIN HEALTHY AND INDEPENDENT

Senior Resources is a non-profit organization that coordinates services, provides resources and encourages the personal choices that allow Richland

County’s senior citizens to remain independent. In FY2019, our programs and services reached thousands of elderly and disabled Midlands residents, as well as their family members and caregivers. By providing in-home and community-based services, as well as volunteer and social opportunities, we helped these elderly and disabled citizens maintain their healthy, independent lifestyles and avoid or delay the need for institutionalized care.

2019 CELEBRATING THE LAST YEAR OF THE DECADE + OUR FUTURE IN 2020

From Eastover to Irmo and every point in between, you are likely to see a Senior Resources vehicle

driving along any road in Richland County. Behind the wheel is a dedicated employee delivering meals, transporting seniors to appointments,

or filling the bus to one of our local senior wellness centers. If we were more like pizza delivery and we placed signs on the roof of our vehicles, you would see at least 10 times more vehicles each day as our social worker travels to homes to help seniors plan their care, care takers help with daily house work and provide personal care, and dedicated volunteers deliver hot lunches and pet food, visit homebound seniors, and pull into local elementary schools for intergenerational reading instruction.

Our reach is wide and deep in the community and that authentic, passionate service is only possible because our community support is also wide and deep. From government agencies to local small business owners, and from community-minded corporations to a small army of individual donors and

volunteers, thousands upon thousands of people are behind our successes in 2019.

Our three Meals on Wheels centers served over 150,000 meals, including distributions doubling in our Spring Valley location. Our Food Co-op Program to provide fresh produce to seniors continued to grow, doubling in size in recent years. Community engagement was at an all-time high as March for Meals fundraiser was the largest in participants and dollars raised and Meals on Wheels Madness provided record volunteers.

Thank you for making all of the successes reported in this publication possible. With each program and graphic there are hundreds of names and faces of seniors who are benefiting from the high-quality services you enable. With your help, we enter 2020 in a strong position with an engaged board of directors, a team of mission-focused employees, and the full support of our community. Join us in celebrating the highlights of 2019 and moving boldly into the future to empower seniors to remain healthy and independent.

OUR PROGRAMSTHREE AREAS OF CARE

Meals On WheelsAs the only provider of Meals On Wheels in Richland County, we deliver hot, nutritious meals to homebound clients each day. The beneficiaries of our Meals On Wheels service are the disabled and elderly who cannot maintain an adequate, healthy diet, either because of cost or lack of transportation. Our balanced meals provide one-third of their daily nutritional requirements.

Food Co-op ProgramOur volunteers pack hundreds of bags of fresh produce each month for local seniors. Most bags are delivered by volunteer groups to homebound and low-income seniors, while other bags are available for purchase.

Senior Care PantryThis program provides non-perishable foods, household goods and personal hygiene items to seniors on the waiting list for services. Our pantry is supported through food drives and community donations.

Home CareThis program provides personal care services in the home on a temporary or long-term basis. Clients can receive wheelchairs, walkers, shower seats and other assistive devices, subject to availability. The program also links clients to resources in the community that provide housing, food, discount prescription drugs and other services.

Senior Wheels Transportation ServiceTransportation is provided to doctor appointments and other medical-related trips, including pharmacy. This service is currently available only to existing clients in our Meals On Wheels, Home Care or Wellness Center programs.

Pet PalsWe recognize that pets provide important companionship to many homebound seniors. Meals On Wheels clients who have pets can receive monthly pet food delivery through our Pet Pals program to help them care for their pets at no cost.

Wellness CentersEach day our four wellness centers offer seniors a hot lunch, crafts, physical fitness activities and the companionship of friends. Transportation may be available to the wellness centers for seniors who need it.

Foster Grandparents*Foster Grandparents mentor and tutor at-risk students, primarily in elementary schools. This intergenerational program leads to improved behavior and academic performance, and provides the participants with an opportunity to remain active and engaged in their community.

Senior Companions*Senior Companions assist homebound seniors with light housekeeping and meal preparation and provide respite to regular caregivers. Senior Companions also provide a human connection that helps prevent loneliness and isolation.* Foster Grandparents and Senior Companions are programs of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which provide volunteer opportunities for seniors ages 55 and older. Eligible volunteers receive a stipend for their service.
