Dear Friends,

In a recent address to young people, Pope Francis told them, “Do not bury your talents, the gifts that God has given you! Do not be afraid to dream of great things!” The staff and teams of NET Ministries are certainly dreaming of great things. We recognize that the Church continues to echo the missionary mandate of Christ – to go out into the world and proclaim the good news! Now, more than ever, young Catholics animated with a deep love for Christ and His Church and empowered by the Holy Spirit are called to bring the Gospel message to their contemporaries.

We recognize that our Lord has entrusted us with some gifts and wisdom in the ministry of awakening faith in young people. He has blessed us richly through the years with dedicated staff and team members, generous benefactors and financial resources, and widespread support from bishops across the country.

“To whom much has been given, much will be expected” (Luke 12:48). We recognize as a ministry that we must do more. We are excited by the launch of Igniting Faith, our strategic plan to reach even more young Catholics by adding one NET team each year for the next five years. This will allow us to awaken faith in thousands more young people each year.

This past spring, we sent a group of our mission staff to Scotland to conduct the first NET retreats in that beautiful country. This fall we are sending a team to serve at the Cathedral High School in New Ulm, MN at the request of our good friend Bishop John LeVoir. We are establishing a parish team in the largest parish in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, MO with the encouragement of our founding president, Archbishop Robert Carlson. We are increasing our presence in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, leading to the opening of a regional office at invitation of our ecclesial advisor, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr. Young Catholic missionaries are answering the call to serve in this important work.

We are incredibly grateful for all those who support the NET team members in their evangelistic mission. Whether you house our team members as they travel, invite them to serve in your parish, or support them with your prayers or financial gifts, you are helping them to do great things. And for that, I express my heartfelt gratitude.

With my gratitude,

Mark BerchemFounder and Executive Director

THANK YOU, BABS: 15 YEARS ON THE BOARDBorn into a broken family, Babs Koch was raised for years by her mother who was on a “faith search” and seemingly attended a new church each week, and later, her adoptive family who attended both Catholic and Baptist churches. It wasn’t until she married her husband David - a devout Catholic - that her faith took on a new sig-nificance. She is now is a proud supporter of NET Ministries and was a Board Member for the past 15 years.

We thank Mrs. Koch for her time on the Board of Directors and deeply appreciate all she has done to further the mission of NET Ministries.

She says, “NET’s mission is so perfectly aligned with our family’s personal mission. We believe God has blessed us by providing us with the means to share His universal mission of bringing salvation to all people, so that they can know, love, and serve Him in this life and enter into His presence in eternal life. This is why we believe in NET and have chosen to partner with NET in all aspects of their ministry.

Years ago, a dear friend of mine who has served with me on various boards invited me to hear NET’s story at a dinner she was hosting. Out of respect for her, I accepted her invitation even though I knew I just couldn’t get involved in one more organization. But after hearing NET’s com-pelling mission and of its beginnings, I was moved to want to be a part of this faith-filled organiza-tion that was touching the lives of so many young people—I wholeheartedly said ‘yes’ to serving on NET’s Board of Directors. Mark Berchem, along with the gifted and dedicated staff, have worked miracles. Theirs is a story that should be told and retold, with great spiritual benefits for all who hear.

NET is giving our youth a solid faith foundation in which to learn, grow, come alive and to pass it on, and to live good lives in all that they do. I can only imagine what a blessing and oppor-tunity it is to have had the NET experience! It is a discipleship of the highest degree. I’ve always wanted Catholic schools—elementary, high school and colleges—to provide the learning opportunity in their curriculum for their stu-dents to learn about a personal relationship with God and have an understanding of the Holy Bi-ble. The team members are certainly filling that large void that exists in our schools today!”

AT HER FINAL BOARD MEETING IN MARCH 2013,BABS KOCH ACCEPTED A TOKEN OF OUR APPRECIATION. SHE IS PICTURED WITH ARCHBISHOP JOHN NIENSTEDT,

In June, a group of NET USA Mission Staff flew to Scotland, thanks to Father Jim Duggan, a priest from Scotland. He recognized a great need for youth retreat ministry in his country and organized a trip for seven of us from NET USA mission staff, along with a NET USA alumna from Scotland and four members from NET Ireland, to travel to his diocese in Glasgow, Scotland and conduct retreats for the youth.

Before the team began their retreat work, they had an interesting conversation with a woman after Mass. The exchange was brief, but she said that the NET team being in Scotland was an answer to the prayers of a country that has been thirsting so long for Catholicism to be rekindled. She said the youth in her country have no desire to practice their faith because they have fed into the lie that it is not “cool.” She believes that God is finally providing an answer to decades of prayers through a witness to the youth in this country that young people all over the world are living out their faith and living their lives for Jesus.

The whole NET team was privileged enough

to be officially commissioned by Irish Bishop Philip Boyce. It was such a gift.

After the commissioning, the team had two days of ministry training as they worked to combine the two different countries’ ways of doing things and figuring out what would be best for the youth of Scotland.

All of the retreats were conducted in schools. In Scotland, the schooling system is different than in the United States. Catholic schools in Scotland are considered public. Because of this, there is a variety of different faith backgrounds and beliefs with the students in these schools.

As an American, it’s a little difficult to comprehend the history of Christianity that this country carries with it. Our country is only but a few hundred years old. Christianity in Scotland is breaching the 1450 year mark!

With that comes a lot of tension. The team learned they had to be careful when sharing which football (soccer) team they were a fan of. One is a Protestant team and the other is a Catholic team.

ANNUAL REPORT 12-13

The team found that most of the youth who they were blessed to spend time with did not even know who Jesus was before the retreat began! They were somewhat aware of the history of Christianity, and they were even more aware of the issues of the Church, but it was a rarity to encounter a secondary school student who knew, or had ever even been told, that Jesus loves them and died for them.

Fr. Jim said of the retreat work in Scotland: “It was brilliant. God really, really worked here. The team was amazing. You know well the quality of the folks you sent over – they are really inspiring as individuals, as missionaries, as advocates of NET.

It was such a privilege to see them work and to share time with them. While I had picked up a lot of what happens through my visit to [NET USA] and to Ireland, one of the things that impressed me most was just how everything is surrounded by prayer. It was really inspirational. There’s probably too much to praise to write it all down.

The bottom line is that God really worked in all the schools through them. Everyone was impressed by the team but also by the methods and the preparation and professionalism of what they do.

Please continue to pray for the people of Scotland.

Since 1981, NET Ministries has evange-lized Catholic youth across the country and throughout the world in various countries. Over 2000 young adults have responded to the Jesus’ call to love Him with all one’s heart, mind, soul, and strength (Mk 12:30) and have heeded the exhortation of Pope Pius VI who said, “Side by side with the collective procla-mation of the Gospel, the other form of trans-mission, the person-to-person one, remains valid and important. The Lord often used it and so did the apostles. In the long run, is there any other way of handing on the Gospel than by transmitting to another person one’s personal experience of faith? For evangeliza-tion must touch life: the natural life to which it gives a new meaning, purifies and elevates it.”

The vibrant witness of hope and joy that NET team members show to their peers has proven to be the most effective means to introduce others to a life-changing personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Many of our

alumni have continued this work in a variety of ways. They have taken their formative time with NET and continued a life of prayer, sacra-mental participation, fellowship, and service. They serve as missionaries in the work place, in their places of study, in their marriages, in the convent, and in the priesthood. In big and small ways, NET alumni continue to engage our current culture and dare to transform it according to God’s design through the wit-ness of their lives.

On May 18, 2013, at the annual end of the year banquet for the NET team members and their families, two of our alumnae were hon-ored with NET’s Distinguished Alumni Award. These women have made a lasting impact in Catholic evangelization in our country. We in-vited them to fly in to St. Paul to accept the award and give a few words of advice to the team members before they officially became NET alumni themselves.

A SACRIFICE IN FAITHARCHBISHOP NIENSTEDT

The following is an excerpt from The Most Reverend John C. Nienstedt’s key-note address at NET’s Youth Benefit Banquet on April 30, 2013.

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to be with you to-night as we continue to give thanks to Almighty God for the great good He is accomplishing in and through NET Ministries. Through the powerful wit-ness of our young people on fire for the faith, NET Ministries continues to obey the command of Christ to “go, therefore, into the whole world, and proclaim the Good News.”

As you are all well aware, we are living in this Year of Faith proclaimed by the now Pontiff-emeritus, Pope Benedict XVI, last October. In his statement at that time, the Pope issued a direct challenge to each of us:

“To rediscover the content of the faith that is professed, celebrated, lived, and prayed, and to reflect on the act of faith, is a task that every believer must make his own, especially in the course of this Year.”

The “content of faith”—whose sourc-es are Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition—represent a witness to God’s words and deeds in seeking us out to court our love and friendship and bind us in communion with Him and with His Body, the Church.

As Catholics, we know that the knowl-

edge derived from the “content of faith” is not to be confused with sen-timentality or “warm fuzzies.” Christ may indeed provide such consola-tions, but they do not lie at the heart of our Christian faith. Rather, to celebrate properly this Year of Faith, we must strive, once again, to choose to trust—to trust in Jesus who reveals the face of God to us and to trust in the Church who reveals Christ’s presence to us.

One of my favorite Old Testament sto-ries is the sacrifice of Isaac. Abraham, our father in faith, could not have experienced any sort of consolation when he heard the strong voice of God, asking of him what mattered the most to him—his very own son. What a stirring, moving line in the book of

Genesis where we read: “[give to me] your son, your only son, the one you love.” The one you love. In these words, the Bible makes it clear what God is asking, and that is simply everything. And in the fullest pre-figurement of Christ’s own sacrifice, Abraham will-ingly obeys—in loving trust, he utters a silent “fiat” and prepares to give back

“It is meant to harness their inherent desire for greatness, found

in the hearts ofall young people.”

Page 11: Annual Report 12-13

Page 11ANNUAL REPORT 11-12Page 11

ANNUAL REPORT 12-13

to God his cherished child.

In the end, it matters little that Abraham did not actually sacrifice Isaac. Abraham’s heart had already been lifted up to the Father—the sac-rifice had been made.

My brothers and sisters, this act of lov-ing trust—holding nothing back from God, giving it all back to him through a life of service, compassion and fidel-ity, this is our life of faith! And this is exactly the purpose of the NET teams, to call young people to this life of trust and faith. It is meant to harness their inherent desire for greatness, found in the hearts all young people; to utilize their God-given longing for romance, adventure, and radical love for the proclamation of the deepest adven-ture—to trust that following Jesus will not bring death, diminishment or loss, but rather life, hope and, yes, joy!

The words of the Gospel, the words of Christ to the disciples on the sea, “Go out into the deep, and cast your nets out for a catch” are words not nearly as dramatic as those spoken to Abraham, but they are indeed an invitation to faith all the same. Jesus says to us, right here and right now, even as we find ourselves in the stormy and unforgiv-ing sea of a world with little faith, “Trust in me. I am here with you. Do not be afraid!”

During this Year of Faith, I know that NET Ministries is playing a critical part in helping our youth rediscover or

maybe discover for the first time the content of the faith. And once this year concludes, the need for the minis-try of NET will continue for many, many more years to come. Your gifts of sup-port are again not as dramatic as the sacrifice of Abraham, but they must be rooted in the same act of loving trust as the one made by our father in faith; trust that God will take your gift given out of faith, hope and love and cause it to bear fruit abundantly.

May God bless you always.

IGNITING FAITH: KICKING OFF THE 5-YEAR PLANAs a ministry we have heard from bishops, priests, parishes, and parents who wish NET could reach more of the many youth who are disengaging from their faith and from the Church. As we approach the beginning of our 2013-2014 mission year, NET will reach over 60,000 youth this year alone. Even though 60,000 youth is an impressive number, there are so many more young Catholics in need of hearing the message of God’s love and mercy.

Currently, NET Ministries is in the midst of kick-ing off a five-year strategic plan that we are call-ing “Igniting Faith.” Through Igniting Faith, NET has committed to expanding our ministry by 50% over the next five years, which will bring the number of youth reached to 90,000 youth per year. Our main avenue to achieve this goal is to add a new NET team each year for the next five years. NET Ministries has set a goal to increase to

16 teams and 175 full time missionaries by 2017.

In addition to adding a new team every year, we plan to open two regional NET offices. The first of these regional offices will be in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the second office will be in California. This plan offers NET the ability to reach 30,000 more young people annually. Establishment of these regional offices and the addition of the new teams will enable us to provide more NET retreats with less travel for the teams, as well as provide additional recruiting and development opportunities.

As the first year of Igniting Faith gets started in September, we are excited to make the jump to twelve teams, and cannot wait until we expand to 16 teams and two regional offices.

SEMINARY TRAININGIn early June, Mark Berchem provided four training sessions for the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity’s Evangelization in Action program. The program for first year seminar-ians is designed to cultivate an evangelistic mindset and practical evangelistic skills in the men preparing for priesthood. Topics Mark covered included describing the evan-gelization continuum, evangelistic conversa-tion and the art of small talk, weaving faith sharing into relational conversation, and praying with people in evangelistic settings.

PARISH TEAMSWhen I began my job over a year ago as the Parish/School Team Administrator, I naively en-visioned that most of the Igniting Faith expan-sion (see opposite page) would take place with Retreat Teams, not Parish Teams. Slowly through conversations and meetings, I began to put the pieces together. Parish Teams would be seeing the biggest addition from the Igniting Faith ini-tiative, not the other way around. While excited, but part of me responded with a resounding, “What?”

Having served on a Retreat Team myself, I real-ize that there is still a limited understanding of what Parish Teams do. Let me explain concisely:

As a Church, we are called to share our faith, but this can be awkward, especially within the comforts and social constraints of our current culture. Many times, the most awkward place to share our faith is within our own communities and sometimes even within the church building itself. We, myself included, need to be reminded that our faith is not just a gift to be hidden in closet, but shared with our neighbors.

This is where Parish Teams can help. They are an opportunity that, through the power of the Holy

Spirit, a parish community can awaken to the presence of Christ and the call of discipleship in the midst of everyday life. It is not NET’s purpose to replace or substitute and active youth minis-try program in a parish, but rather, to augment and enliven youth ministry programs that are executed by parish staff and volunteers. They provide a dynamic opportunity that can help a parish cultivate and grow a culture of evangeli-zation and discipleship.

And so enters my excitement once again when I imagine the prospect of adding teams and working with more parishes. This upcoming year we will be working with St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Forest Lake, MN for a second year and St. Joseph Cottleville in St. Charles, MO for the first time. We excited to be partnering with both of these parishes. The team serving at St. Charles will be our first out-of-state Parish Team.

NET recently began also serving specific schools full-time, with Providence Academy in Plymouth, MN being the location of our very first School Team for the past three years. This year we will add Cathedral High School in New Ulm, MN to the list.
