Name of KVK Feedback
Bhadrak Feeding of spawns with powered GNOC:DORB :: 1:1 incorporated with 0.5% yeast powder along with feeding of MnSO4 0.01mg/fish/day increases spawn
survival rate from 27.26% in farmers’ practice to 36.85% in recommended practice respectively in earthen ponds.
Bhadrak Fishes fed with an alternate feeding regime of 8days continuous feeding with 2days starvation increases fish yield from 26.88Q/ha in farmers’ practice to
30.20q/ha in recommended practice by cutting short the cost of cultivation by 8.1%.
Bhadrak Incorporation of ivermectin powder(2% W/W) with traditional feed at 250PPM and fed to fishes for 4days along with one time application of ivermectin
solution (2%w/v) in pond water @500ml/ha effectively control ‘Argulosis’ in fish pond.

ANNEXURE – I Success Story – 1 KVK Name – Bhadrak Title
Commercial fish seed production in leased-out tanks – a dream that comes true for a landless youth
Introduction Mr.Purnachandra Majhi is an graduated, thirty eight years old rural youth. His native village is Thaila (Manjuri road) of
Bhandaripokhari block of Bhadrak district, Odisha. He is fisherman by caste. His father was earning his livelihood by doing pisciculture
in four number of leased-out private tanks of five acres water spread area. After his education, Mr.Purnachandra Majhi returned back
to his native village and helped his father in pisciculture activities. He was not satisfied with the meager income that was earned from
fish grow-out activities.
KVK Intervention He came in contact with District Fishery Office and KVK, Bhadrak. The team of District Fishery
Office along with the fishery scientist of KVK, Bhadrak visited his site and suggested him to join in a
five days on-campus vocational training programme at KVK, Bhadrak on commercial fish seed
production. He actively participated in the training and by the end of the programme he was
convinced that fish seed production is much more remunerative and profitable venture than table-size
fish production. As per the advice of the fishery scientist, he prepared his four number of tanks and
then he had been to a fish spawn production centre at Ramsagar of West Bengal. He fetched 400
Batis (1 Bati = 25000 number of mixed IMC spawns approximately) in four phases and stocked in four
number of tanks @ 20 lakh spawns per acre during mid-August of 2005. He strictly followed the procedures of phased manuring,
supplementary feeding schedule and prophylactic measures against diseases.
Output
45
By the end of December he sold out 17 lakhs of fries and 2 lakhs of fingerlings and
gained a net profit of rupees one lakh within four months. After that he never looked back.
Now, he is a successful lease-holder of 31 number of Gram-panchayat and private tanks of
27 acres water-spread area in fourteen different nearby villages, namely- Thaila, Manjuri
road, Chasakhanda, Kochilapadi, Rajendrapur, Talabarei, Namakana, Bhualagadia,
Satasola, Gandhiapadi, Manoharpur, Belamala, Chhatabar and Naami. In these tanks, he is
adopted modern technologies for production of quality fish seeds viz. fries, Fingerlings,
stunted fingerlings, yearlings of different fish species viz.catla, rohu, mrigal, silvercarp, grass
carp, black carp, silver barb, pangas etc. from time to time as per the local demand. He always sells fish seeds to the fish farmers in a
very competitive price. During 2014-15, he sold 308 quintals of quality fish seeds to nearly 1200 number of fish farmers of Bhadrak
district and neighbouring districts and sold out nearly 64 quintals of table-size fish in the local market. He earned a net profit of Rs.27
lakhs. He engaged permanently fourteen number rural youths in the fish seed production activities round the year.
He is the first and only farmer of Bhadrak district recognized as Government fish seed supplier by the Odisha State
Fisheries Department under RKVY reservoir cage fish farming scheme and reservoir / river ranching programmes. He has been
awarded block level best fish farmer by ATMA, Bhadrak and district level best fish farmer both by ATMA, Bhadrak and Orissa
University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar.
Outcome In real sense, Mr. Purnachandra Majhi has proved that land and money are not
constraints to venture into agripreneurship. Now-a-days, Mr. Majhi is a role-model for many
educated unemployed rural youths of the district and they are encouraged to adopt
agripreneurship. It is a positive trend that supports rural economy and prevents exodus of farm
labourers from village to cities.
46
Impact The village tanks including some GP tanks which remain fallow, weed- choked for years together are now renovated, cleaned
and utilized for economic activities. The unemployed youths of the village get temporarily engaged in netting operations, cleaning
aquatic weeds from the pond, embankment strengthening, fish harvesting and trading of fish seeds
