BCHA President’s Report & 4H Report: John Lewis

Welcome to the AGM. This past year was shaping up to be busy for BC Hereford breeders and then Covid hit and changed everything, resulting in cancelled shows, meetings and sales. The pandemic has reshaped how we market our cattle and how buyers view and purchase cattle, and breeders are having to be creative in their marketing.

This year's AGM will be held online in order to restrict travel and keep everyone safe, and we are hoping to have a large turnout of members who won't have to travel to attend. Special thanks go out to all the directors, volunteers and breeders who are working to promote and represent Herefords at the local, provincial and national levels. BC Hereford ranchers are diverse in the cattle we are producing and there is something for everyone. The harder we are with culling and striving to put our best cattle forward, the better the Breed and the ranchers will be.

Nationally, the Canadian Hereford Association is in its seventh year of the Genome Canada Project, where breeders from across Canada have measured the feed efficiency of thousands of Hereford bull calves. BC bulls continue to be at the top with the highest weight gains. If you want to send bulls to participate in this project contact Sarah at the Canadian Hereford Association. The Board has also done a survey with commercial cattle breeders, collecting data to help in the CHA's strategic marketing toward getting more Herefords into commercial herds.

Your BC Board is here to work for all the BC breeders and bring forward any ideas or concerns you would like addressed locally or nationally - please feel free to get in touch with any Board member. The CHA is in the test stages of marketing Certified Hereford Beef in Canada, which is already being test marketed in select stores and restaurants in Canada. Hopefully we will continue to see this grow.

Despite lower bull prices this last spring in other breeds, Hereford breeders did a good job of doing their homework and getting their sale cattle out in front of the buyers. This work paid off - the overall sales of purebred and commercial Hereford cattle have remained strong in Canada and demand for good Hereford cattle continues to increase as we are the only true outcross source. Hopefully this trend will continue in 2020-2021. Watch for Hereford sales this fall at Richardson Ranch (online) and bull sales next spring at Pine Butte, Dawson Creek, Vanderhoof and Williams Lake.

In 2019, we gave out 17 certificates at 10 different fairs or achievement days. There were some glitches because the certificates were originally issued for Spady’s Show supplies and part way through the year Spadys sold to Mountain West Livestock and Supply. We hope that most of the certificates were redeemed by the winners. This year no awards were handed out by the BC Hereford Association or have not been reported at the time of this report. Winners would have received a letter with a $50 voucher to redeem online at Mountain West Livestock and Supply. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy.---John
