Purpose

Increase knowledge and skills of health care providers who provide palliative/end of life care in Ct by enrolling a state wide target sample of Registered Nurses (RNs) to train them.

Provide an opportunity to incorporate recommendations of Assessing the Unmet Needs of Health Care Providers Using a Web-based Survey.

Purpose

Comprehensive and longitudinal follow-up to monitor dissemination of the training to a range of disciplines who work at different clinical settings.

Measures and Questionnaires

Pre-program ELNEC Application with Goals for Training.

End-of-Life Needs Professional Caregiver Survey (EPCS) before training and 6 months after training.

6-month ELNEC survey and 12-month ELNEC survey to gather data on number of modules taught; number and type of health care providers taught; and to evaluate goals.

Preliminary Training Outcomes

Two-day training conducted on October 20 and 21, 2011.

50 nurses attended both days of training.

50 nurses were awarded ELNEC certificates and continuing education credits for attending the training.

Next Steps

Establish a database to store essential data needed for reports to the DPH and Ct Cancer Partnership.

Analysis and comparison of pre-course EPCS scores and post-course EPCS scores.

Analysis of whether participants met 6 and 12 months goals: integration of end-of-life care in facility’s educational activities.
