Terms & Conditions1. Receipt by the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) of a properly completed booking form signed by a delegate is contractually binding irrespective

of whether payment has been received. Where payment is not made by credit card at the time of receipt of the booking form, it must be made within7 days of receipt of an invoice from SMI.

2. Changes of delegate names can be made up to 8 working days before the event but fees cannot be refunded for cancellations received after theexpiry of the “early bird” discount offer. Refund for bookings cancelled before expiry of “early bird” discount will be limited to 50% of the fee.

3. It may be necessary to substitute different speakers from those advertised or to amend the contents or timing of parts of the programme but feesdue cannot be refunded.

4. If, for reasons beyond SMI’s control, it is necessary to cancel the event or postpone it to another date or venue, the fee paid will be held as a credit forthe delegate’s attendance at future SMI events of his choosing and a credit note to this effect, valid for one year only from date of issue, will bedispatched to him.

5. SMI is not responsible for any loss or damage as a result of a substitution, alteration, postponement, or cancellation of the event due to causes beyondits control including but without limitation natural disasters, sabotage, accident, trade or industrial disputes or hostilities.

A list of local hotels and B&B guest houses will besent with an acknowledgement of receipt of thisbooking form. Delegates must make their own

arrangements for any accommodation they requireduring the conference. Because the limited

accommodation in the centre of Dartmouth will bein high demand

Conference Chairman – Rear Admiral Terry Loughran had a distinguished career as a pilot in the Royal Navy rising to professional head of the Fleet Air Arm. He has commanded a variety of ships including the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal and as a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical

Society has consulted on a number of projects, including the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers. A keen yachtsman and motor cycle enthusiast he now enjoys a thriving career chairing conferences and as an after dinner speaker.

1700 End of first day of conference

1845 Coach leaves Mayor’s Avenue car-park in town centre of Dartmouth for the conference reception and dinner atthe Britannia Royal Naval College.

1900 Conference reception on the Quarterdeck.

1945 Conference dinner in the Senior Gunroom at the Britannia Royal Naval College with speech from the guest ofhonour. During the dinner musical accompaniment will be played by the BRNC volunteer band.

2300 Coaches depart in relays until 2359 for delegates returning to their hotels.

Theme 1 – The Maritime World Today

Rear Admiral David Snelson, Maritime Specialist sets the scene with the economics of UK maritime trade, UK ports &terminals, together with the maritime security of the UK littoral, including SOLAS, search and rescue, maritime borderissues, International Law of the Sea, and piracy.

Rear Admiral Chris Parry, Author & Maritime Consultant talks about the maritime “Superhighway” in the context ofinternational geo-politics and evolving threats.

Rear Admiral Paul Bennett, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Capability) at Navy Command provides an insight intothe capability requirements of the Royal Navy for operations from high intensity warfighting to low intensityhumanitarian tasks including stemming migration & the drugs trade and the protection of offshore assets.

1530 – 1600 Networking opportunity over coffee/tea break in the foyer of the Caspar John Hall.

Mr Stephen Phipson, Head of DIT Defence & Security Organisation reviews the importance of wide-ranging maritime

exports in sustaining the health of the UK maritime industries whilst promoting the UK government’s prosperity agenda.

Professor David Lane, Director, Edinburgh Centre for Robotics discusses the broader technology developments

relevant to the seafaring world including maritime autonomy and the need for the sector to be more ambitious in

setting its R&D agenda.

Panel discussion orchestrated by conference chairman Terry Loughran with David Snelson, Chris Parry, Paul Bennett,

Stephen Phipson and David Lane with questions from the audience.

Thursday 27 April 20170930 Conference re-opens in the Caspar John Hall at the Britannia Royal Naval College.

Theme 2 – Supporting the UK Maritime Enterprise

Mr Tony Graham, Chairman, UK Naval Engineering Science and Technology (NEST) Forum discusses theongoing UKNEST campaign plan to research and address the UK naval enterprise skill and technology challenges.

Professor Kevin Jones, Dean of Plymouth Marine Institute offers a view on general & equipment training,including the development, use and management of bridge simulators and computer based training.

Mrs Sarah Kenny, Managing Director, Maritime, Land & Weapons, QinetiQ reviews the ranges, test andevaluation facilities for the Royal Navy and the naval industries.

1030 – 1100 Networking opportunity over coffee/tea break in the foyer of the Caspar John Hall.

Commodore Duncan Lamb, Head of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary talks about the role of the Royal Fleet Auxiliaryincluding tankers, store ships, landing support ships & Ro-Ro vessels in support of humanitarian and maritimesecurity operations.

Mr Guy Platten, Chief Executive Officer, UK Chamber of Shipping provides an insight into the role of theChamber in strengthening the civil/military relationship and the defence & security needs for UK shipping under areinvigorated UK Flag.

Panel discussion, orchestrated by conference chairman Terry Loughran, with Tony Graham, Kevin Jones, SarahKenny, Duncan Lamb and Guy Platten with questions from the audience.

Mr Steve Hyde, Leader of Naval Design Partnership, Defence Equipment & Support reviews the Naval DesignPartnership including the role of Classification Societies and Lloyds Rules for naval vessels.

Mr John Hudson, Managing Director, BAE Systems Maritime talks about the partnership with the Royal Navy forthe support of warship & submarine acquisition and naval base management & support.

Mr John Howie, Chief Executive Marine & Technology, Babcock International Group reviews the partnership with theRoyal Navy across the asset lifecycle of warships and submarines and the associated Defence Lines of Development.

1430 – 1500 Networking opportunity over coffee/tea break in the foyer of the Caspar John Hall.

Mr Russell Gould, Chief Executive Officer, Kelvin Hughes summarises the state of the current supply chain fornaval procurement viewed from the perspective of a maritime equipment supplier.

Rear Admiral Henry Parker, Director Ships Acquisition, Defence Equipment & Support talks about the state ofcurrent RN surface ship procurement programmes including QE Class aircraft carriers, Type 26, GPLF, OPVs, and theMHC programme.
