Medical Marijuana

Insurance Matters

The cute expression “ OLD AGE IS NOT FOR WIMPS” takes on a more serious tone as we add more candles to our cake. Health concerns and possible solutions are uppermost in our minds for ourselves, our family and our friends.

As of October 17, 2018, the purchase and use of cannabis for recreational use will be legal in Canada. However, for a number of years, the Cannabis Act has allowed Canadians to seek alternatives to the pharmaceutical approach in dealing with medical issues.

An article in the Globe and Mail (April, 2017) suggests that seniors are the fastest growing demographic of cannabis users. These individuals are hoping to find some relief from the pain of severe arthritis, chronic pain, sleep disorders, Parkinson’s, PTSD, dementia and depression.

The government of Canada has a web-site titled “About Cannabis”. It contains the laws regarding the purchase, the use and the growing of plants for personal use. Basically, to grow your own for medical purposes, you will need to be authorized for cannabis use by a health care professional and then be registered with a licenced producer or Health Canada. Four plants per household are allowed for personal use.

Cannabis has hundreds of chemical elements but the two commonly known ones are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is thought to interact with protein cells in the brain which helps it deal positively with chronic pain. THC is the psycho-active element which can be removed as the plant is processed.

Although most of us were part of the “Just Say No” era, it might be worth a conversation with your health care professional, if you think this alternative approach to pain treatment might be right for you.

It is a stressful and confusing time when there is a medical emergency or illness and, therefore, it is easy to forget to submit a claim. Keeping the Manulife name and your Policy ID number on the fridge or in another obvious place is a helpful reminder. Another suggestion is to put your policy ID number on your membership card so it will be easily accessible.

Your individual policy number is on the Summary of Information page in the acceptance package you received when your application was confirmed.

If you know of a member who is ill or injured, a gentle reminder to her to keep receipts and bills and other pertinent information will be appreciated when it is time to submit a claim and will help save time and energy later.

Thanks to those who took application forms at the Fall Luncheon. I know you will benefit from the Manulife Insurance Plan.

Thank you to all the ladies who remembered to bring a new children`s book or who made a cash donation at the fall luncheon. Your continued support of A Book of My Own is sincerely appreciated. Our 20th year celebration on September 24th was a big success. We were able to hear from guest speakers from Hiatus House and House of Sophrosyne. Both agencies are recipients of new children`s books and their representatives expressed their appreciation of our efforts to put new books in the hands of some very deserving children.

RWTO Windsor - Essex BranchCaring and Sharingwww.rwto.org/branches/windsor_essex.asp

President’s Message

FYIIn the spirit of caring and sharing, we would like to share with all our members.

When our branch hosted the 2016 Convention, we purchased some decorations which essentially belong to the membership. Therefore, we are informing you that the following items may be borrowed:

1) 40 bevelled mirrors measuring 25 cm by 25 cm (10 in by 10 in) that could be used on tables and have centerpieces placed on them.

2) 40 round glass vases measuring 13 cm (5 in) high and 13 cm wide with a 10cm (4 in) diameter opening.

3) 2 large black A-frame wood sandwich boards (the kind you see free standing outside a restaurant) measuring 102 cm (40 inches) by 50 cm (20 inches). These boards would be for indoor use only and you would be provided with special coloured markers.

4) Hundreds of transparent plastic diamonds for use as table decorations.

If you borrow any of the above, you would leave a cash deposit to be refunded when the items are returned in good condition.

The borrower would have to make arrangements to pick up and return the decorations.

If interested in borrowing any of these items for an anniversary, shower, or party, please email me at [email protected] or phone 519-735-0306 to

make arrangements for pick up.

We also have votive candles for sale. The glass container, that holds the candle, stands 6 cm (2.5 in) high and has an opening with a diameter of 5 cm (2 in). These candles can burn up to 8 hours. This is a consumable item, so it would have to be purchased. The glass container is reusable.
