Sweet Tea and the Bluegrass Boys at the Gulf Coast Bluegrass Festival in October, 2016
Last month's issue covered the Gulf Coast Bluegrass Festival, but it left out a critical piece of news. SEBA Band Sweet Tea and the Bluegrass Boys put on two great sets at the festival. They earned a coveted Friday evening slot and had the honors of opening the show on Saturday. Here's a shot of them from the event.

From the Editor's DeskFrom the Editor's Desk As the year draws to a close, I'd like to thank everyone who supported the Breakdown. Your articles, advertisements, and suggestions have been a great help in producing this newsletter each month. Over the past 19 months, I have enjoyed working withSEBA bands, advertisers, jammers, venue & event managers, and the general membership in conjunction with the newsletter and SEBA activities. At this time; however, I have decided to step back from the Breakdown in favor of a much lower-profile role. With that in mind, I will transition away from the newsletter position over the next few weeks. If you are interested in assisting in the production of this publication, please consider volunteering. This isa function that would lend itself to a committee organization, so SEBA could accommodate several volunteers if there's enough interest.
Thanks again and best wishes for the holiday season!

After attending jam sessions over the years I continue to be surprised at the number of Bluegrass musicians who have trouble playing in keys other than C, G, D and A. Many times vocal comfort requires one to be able to play in unusual keys such as F# or Eb. That means one has to transpose the chords into another key.Further if playing a song in a key using a relative minor, what relative minor would be played if one changes to a new key?
Well the Circle of Fifths Chart is an easy way to quickly transpose any chord arrangement from one key to any other key no matter what chords are used originally in the song.
Check out the Circle of Fifths Chart below.
As you can see on the chart, if C is your key root chordthen, like most bluegrass songs, you would probably beplaying C, G, F, D and A minor chords. Now if you decide to play the same song in the key of Eb, you would be playing the corresponding chords Eb, Bb, Ab,F, and C minor. Even if you are using a capo to play in the key of Eb you can understand the relative relationships between the chords in the two keys.
Another feature of the chart is to quickly identify what key a song is written in. We all know that if there are
no sharps or flats on the staff lines of published music, the song is written in the key of C. Looking at the music, if there is one sharp (#), move one step to the right on the chart or the key of G. Two sharps (##) indicate the key of D and so forth around the chart. Conversely, if the staff lines have one flat (b) then move one step to the left, the key of F. Two flats (bb) indicate the key of Bb and so forth. Therefore when you want to convert a song written in the key of D flat (5b) simply refer to the chart to find the corresponding chords for any other key you wish.
Why is it called the Circle of Fifths? To simply understand the arrangement of chords, think of a piano keyboard or the notes in a musical scale. Take for instance the C scale with no sharps or flats. The scale isC, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. Note that the G note is the fifth step in the scale and therefore the first chord to the right of C on the chart. Take for instance the scale for Bb with two flats. The scale is Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb. Again the F is in the fifth step from Bb and just to the right of Bb on the chart. This holds true for any keyor scale you select, hence the fifth note in a scale, arranged in a circle, The Circle of Fifths.
If you are like me, you like to download and print lyrics and chords of songs from the Internet and then rearrange the chords into a key that is easier to play. Print the Circle of Fifths chart and keep it handy in your instrument case so you can easily convert songs which are written in keys difficult to play or sing into a key which is more comfortable for you.
