0.1 Introduction
The Andaman Trunk Road (ATR) has been designated as NH-223 vide GOI MoRT&H Notification dated 25.08.2005 except the Chainages between Km. 61 to 104 and Km. 142 to 155. Subsequently, the entire ATR situated within the UT of Andaman & Nicobar Islands was designated as NH-223 vide GOI MoRT&H Notification dated 07.07.2008.
There are two missing links on NH-223 i.e. the First one is Middle Strait Creek which is between South Andaman Island & Baratang Island (at Km.107 of NH-223) and the other is Humphrey Strait Creek which is between Baratang Island & Middle and North Andaman Island (at Km. 130 of NH-223). NH-223 is the lifeline of Andaman Island. The movement of passenger & goods over these two creeks are carried out at present through vehicle ferry services which are also for a limited period & frequency. Moreover, the inter-island cargo movement per day works out to 63.34 MT (23120.64MT/365 days). The inter-island cargo movement is often disrupted due to bad weather conditions and therefore the connectivity between the Islands is in jeopardy. Therefore the construction of the two creek bridges is most essential. It is also essential on strategic considerations.
The present site of the 2-lane Creek Bridge at Middle Strait existing chainage, Km. 106.590 (on Middle Strait Jetty Side, South Andaman Island) and meets at existing chainage, Km. 107.762 (on Nilambur Jetty side, Baratang Island) and Humphrey Strait existing chainage, Km. 129.420 (on Gandhi Ghat Jetty Side, Baratang Island) and meets at existing chainage, Km. 130.600 (on Uttara Jetty side, Middle & North Andaman Island) are section of National Highway-223 . The proposed Bridges lies in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
0.2 Joint Site Visit
A joint site visit of the demarcated forest land for approaches of proposed 2 nos. of Creek Bridges namely Middle Strait & Humphery Strait was conducted on 15 June 2015 with the following officials:

DGPS reading of diverted area has been taken on 16 June 2015, in the presence of authorized revenue person.
0.3 Land Acquisition
The alignment for the bridges passes through reserve forest land on either side of
Middle Strait creek: Construction of the bridge shall required diversion of reserve forest land of 2.77 Ha. (approx). Requirement for diversion of forest land on Middle Strait Jetty Side, South Andaman Island is 1.18 Ha and on Nilambur Jetty side, Baratang Island is
1.59 Ha.

Humphrey Strait creek: Construction of the bridge shall required diversion of reserve forest land of 1.81 Ha. (approx). Requirement for diversion of forest land on Gandhi Ghat Jetty Side, Baratang Island is 0.86 Ha and on Uttara Jetty side is 0.95 Ha
Details of Land acquisition for Middle Strait and Humphrey strait and provided in Appendix I and Appendix II respectively.
0.4 Compensatory Afforestation Land
4.60 Ha of revenue land has been identified in Baludera village of Baratang Island to be handed over to Forest department for compensatory afforestation. Joint site visit of the same has been conducted on 15.06.2015.
0.5 Trees
Total 763 numbers of trees are to be felled in both the bridges during construction. For Middle Strait 627 number of trees to be felled and for Humphery Strait 136 numbers are to be felled.
Details for the same are enclosed in Appendix-IA for Middle Strait Bridge and Appendix –IIA for Humphery Strait Bridge.
