I’m not sure if you have already included officials in the Scotland Office, I not they could also be worth inviting. I know that you are linking in with [redacted] and the team in Edinburgh, and that they are looking at officials to attend the events as well as the Cabinet Secretary for the formal opening – I know they appreciate the welcome you are offering. I also discussed with them your wider programme, and the links to the trip to the Highland Wildlife Park – which sounds really interesting. Without knowing the full schedule, we also wondered if they would be visiting the Botanic Gardens on your work with them on bamboo and panda conservation? Finally, and entirely separately to your work – I’ve been hearing a bit on this - https://www.businessinsider.com.au/adelaide-zoos-plans-to-artificially-inseminate-a-giant-panda-fall-through-as-china-chooses-not-to-extend-contract-2019-8 . I’ve attached the start of our brief for the meeting, and want to confirm that it was on track with your expectations and that our focus was correct – happy to have comments back to help finalise this. More background etc will, of course, be added and happy for you to flag anything more we should be focussing on. From my perspective, this is an important meeting for the Minister. The links with RZSS and China are stand out in their value and having the pandas at Edinburgh Zoo important in terms of diplomatic relations etc – so keen to help take the relationship forward and show support. To: [[email protected]>] Subject: recent phone call Hi [redacted], As per our phone call – The report will be a synopsis of the significant research, conservation and education work relating to giant panda biology and ecology, that the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland has carried out since receiving the giant pandas in 2011. It will summarise the exemplary husbandry and care that has been tendered to the pandas including the recent life-saving surgery on the male, Yang Guang. Furthermore, it will outline the important cultural connection the people of Scotland have developed with the biodiversity of China, which has been catalysed through RZSS hosting the giant pandas, Tian Tian and Yang Guang, who have become a notable part of Edinburgh life. In terms of contacts the most senior contact we have within the National Forestry and Grassland Administration is Mr XIE Chunhua, Division Director for the Department of International Cooperation, and he was here as part of the delegation who recently inspected the panda enclosure. I am unsure who the most senior person is at CWCA but hopefully you can find that out? Happy to discuss further. Barbara You may be aware of a press story in today’s Sun.
