Two New Libraries, Massive Renovation Unveiled This SpringThe staff, leadership and volunteers of the Anne Arundel County Public Library are excited for the opening of two new facilities and the unveiling of a massive renovation project at another branch this spring. First, Discoveries: The Library at the Mall will move to a new, larger and more visible location in Westfield Annapolis on February 17.

Located in the former Charlotte Russe and American Eagle stores near Crate and Barrel, the nearly 13,000 square foot space will feature expanded children and adult areas, Club 1117 teen space, a separate room for library programs, business services and more books, movies and computers.

Second, the new Michael E. Busch Annapolis Library (referred to as Busch Annapolis in Library Happenings!) will open at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29 and feature a Grand

Opening Community Day on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The new 32,500 square foot building is named for Annapolis resident and longtime public servant Michael E. Busch. Speaker Busch was the longest serving Speaker of the House in Maryland history and the only one from Anne Arundel County in the last 150 years. Under his leadership, public libraries received more than $1 billion in operating and capital funding.

The library is the first newly constructed building of its kind in the county in more than 15 years. The $24 million facility will feature: 85,000 print books and materials; a large community meeting room with space for 500 people; six collaboration spaces for studying or meetings; an expanded children’s area, including an outdoor play space; a teen area, tech zone and tinker space; vending café and community living room.

Lastly, the Severn Library underwent a major renovation over the last 18 months thanks to nearly $1.2 million in funding from the county’s Local Development Council. Features will include: a new lobby and cafe, improved community room, more welcoming furniture, book shelves and upgraded lighting and new flooring and technology. The branch will celebrate the project with a special grand reopening on Friday, March 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. We look forward to welcoming you to these three new library spaces this spring!

#YourLibraryBetter

Foundation Directors Reach Outembers of the board of the library foundation are grateful to the hundreds of donors who support the library. For the last four years, they’ve taken time to reach out and tell them so through phone calls. The director’s annual

“thank-a-thon” took place November 19, with foundation directors: Skip Auld, Tessie Ballard, Hamilton Chaney, DeDe Duncan-White, Anna Greenberg, Linda Greene, Joyce Miller, Chris Nelson and Trish Strott making the calls.

This year, directors were calling donors who supported the foundation’s engraved brick campaign for the “donor walk” at the new Annapolis Library. There were more than 1,200 individuals to the three-month campaign and most of them were first-time donors, people who had never before made a gift to the library. The directors wanted to personally tell them know how much their support means and how grateful they are for their commitment to the library.

“It’s such a pleasure hearing donor’s reasons for why they want to support the library,” said foundation director Karen Smith. “People really care about how the library impacts our community and want to be part of celebrating the fabulous new Annapolis building.”

The engraved brick sidewalk, containing the 1,600 engraved bricks donated through the campaign, will be dedicated at the May 2 Grand Opening Community Day, just one of the many activities taking place that day to celebrate the new building.

Special Donors Get a Sneak Peakn November 25, a special group of library foundation donors met in the under-construction new Annapolis Library on West Street. They were there to experience a hard hat tour of the rooms and spaces in the library that will be named in their honor when it opens in late April.

The visitors were donors who made leadership gifts to the library foundation’s Beyond Your Expectations: The Campaign for the Library between 2016 and 2019. The foundation is honoring their generosity by designating specific rooms and areas within the new building which will be named for them.

“It’s a tribute to these donors’ commitment and generosity to the library,” said foundation executive director Ann Glenn. “Their major gifts made it possible for us to purchase needed equipment and supplies for each branch of AACPL, upgrade furniture and furnishings in each branch, purchase needed technology such as the Wi-Fi hotspots, expand programming system-wide and do many more things which make our libraries better every day. They’re our heroes.”

Donors who were able to take the tour included Joan Beck, Cathy and John Belcher, Sam and Donna Brown, Jane Campbell Chambliss and Pete Chambliss, Katie Cook (representing the Women of West Annapolis,) Faith Goldstein and Jess Cunitz, Anna Greenberg, Jim and Ardith Harle, Barbara Maxwell and representatives from Severn Bank.

“These donors, through their philanthropy, are helping us accomplish so much,” said library CEO Skip Auld. “I couldn’t be more pleased or proud to have their names permanently connected to AACPL and to the Annapolis Library.”

Naming opportunities at the new Annapolis library are still available as of press time. Contact library foundation executive director Ann Glenn at [email protected] or 410.222.2509 for more details.
