Prayer Focus

Although the gospel has spread across the globe, there are still many who do not know Him. And many are suffering through unspeakable trauma, hunger, poverty, abuse, and spiritual darkness. Ask the Lord to burden your heart for the lost and hurting. Find out more information on missionaries your church supports and commit to support them through prayer (and financially if you have the means). If you are even more daring, ask God to send someone to you whom you can disciple. So many people are desperate for His love and healing touch. We have the answer to their sorrow. Let God use you as He sees fit. You have probably heard about Anna before. While her part in history in the Scriptures is short-lived, her appearance is important and significant. I think we can learn from that!

Anna is at the temple when Mary and Joseph bring baby Jesus in to be circumcised. Read Luke 2:22-38, which includes Simeon’s account as well.

Anna was quite old. From my research, she is about 105 years old. She was married young - from our per-spective - about 14, married for 7 years and then widowed. She never remarried and instead devoted herself to serving God in the temple. No doubt God blessed her for serving Him in this capacity. Whenever we com-mit to praying and worshiping the Lord, He sees and blesses us for it.

1. Who was Anna? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Anna was a prophetess. Her prophecy may have been just what is recorded in Scripture, but I don’t think that is the extent of it.

2. How long was she at the temple?___________________________________________________________________________Anna was completely devoted to the Lord and His service. She remained at the temple day and night. Because of this, I think that she gave prophecies to worshipers on a regular basis. She was very close to the Lord.

3. How long had Anna been a widow when she met Jesus?______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4. Anna could have allowed herself to become bitter and depressed after the loss of her husband. But she didn’t. She dedicated her life to serving God. She experienced the joy of the Lord through her acts of wor-ship. How have you allowed pain and suffering to make you bitter and/or depressed? What can you learn from Anna in regard to this?____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5. How do you think worship and prayer prevented Anna from falling into a pit of despair?______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________

6. What did Anna do when she met Jesus and his family?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7. What did Anna do after she met Jesus and His family?____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Anna told everyone who was ready to hear the message of redemption about Jesus. I find this interesting. She didn’t just go and tell ‘anyone’. She told those who were ready to hear the message. Those who were looking for healing, redemption, and restoration. For Hope.

I wonder...if she found them easily - and if she did, if they were ones she had prayed for all of those 84 years that she was at the temple praying.

7. Is there someone in your life who you need to start praying that God softens their hearts so they are ready to receive the gospel? Maybe more than one person? Let’s aim for 5! List their names below.

8. How has Anna’s story convicted you and/or inspired you to pray fervently for those who do not know the Lord? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

9. How have you been so focused on your own problems that you neglect praying for others?____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

10. How is your spiritual appetite? Do you hunger for the Lord like Anna did? If not, whatsteps will you take to increase your hunger? Please note: this begins with help from the HolySpirit followed by our obedience to Him.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
