2. Army on this slide I have looked at what army personnel wear so that I could plan out what to dress my character in. 3. Army boots On this slide I have looked more at army boots and how I could possibly incorporate them into my final animation. 4. Army helmets Like with the boots, I needed to look into helmets more to see how they could tie in. the helmet is a vital thing in the battle field keeping personnel safe from flying bullets and shrapnel. 5. WALTDISNEY Walt Disney is one of the most well known animation company's in the world, creating films such as toy story and countless princes films. This world wide company is responsible for influencing every toddlers child-hood. A lot of there films are created on computers. They original characters are designed and drawn by hand for most films but as technology grows and expands everything seems to be computerized. All of Disney's films are very bright, they aim all of their films at children, this picture shows just a handful of the characters from films that they have made. No other company's have made characters that are this friendly, every child grows up watching these films. 6. Ryan Woodward Ryan Woodward is a well know animator that has done work for the likes of Warner Bros, Fox, Marvel and DreamWorks on films such as Thor 2, Cowboys and Aliens, Captain America 2 and the Spiderman films. Ryan Woodwards designs always seem to follow the same super hero theme, and these are very graphic images that contain a lot of colour and detail. This is a film that Ryan did a lot of animation in, most of this work will have been done on the computer like in a lot of films, there must have been a lot of work put into this film because of the amount of explosions, aliens, flying saucers and general scenes. 7. Henry Selick Henry selick is a well known stop motion animator who is best known for his work on films such as James and the giant peach, the nightmare before Christmas and coraline. A lot of his work seems very dark and gloomy, he uses very dark colours and he always seems to be in a magical world of giant fruit and strange stories. I dont really like this piece, I think its a bit boring, it doesnt say much, it looks like every other animation character, it doesnt stand out in any way. 8. Nick Park Nick Park is an English filmmaker of stop motion animation best known as the creator of Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep. Unlike Henry Selick, Nick Parks work is a lot brighter, you could almost say its more child friendly. Wallace and gromit are one of the most well known animation characters, part of everybody's child hoods. The colours used on these characters are always very bright and they are always happy giving a very warm feeling which will draw you in even more. Every character in these films and programs are hand made from clay, taking a huge amount of time for each scene as it is stop animation it is made in the same way as films such as chicken run. 9. Tim Burton Tim Burton is an American film director, producer, artist, writer, poet and stop motion artist. He has done work such as pokemon, his work is both bright and dark depending on what hes doing but his work is very detailed and very imaginative. Corps bride is a very dark animation film made using robotic puppetry. The colours used in this animation are very dull, a lot of black white and grey mainly it gives of a very scary and eerie feeling that would usually make you want to turn it off but its this cold look that draws you in even more. 10. History of game charactures Games and game characters have changed dramatically over the years from pixelated mini characters to life like characters that almost look like real people, I have decided not to focus on either of these types but to go in the middle and choose sharp looking fictional characters. 11. Old games Without old original games, technology would not be where it is today. Our characters have gone from strength to strength building on there graphics and all the details and complexities or game life. With having the televisions and computers we have today the graphics of the games improved on a dramatic scale as there where ways of adding more and more pixels to things which made the games less jumpy and they had a smoother flow. Games have come on leaps and bounds in the past decade, finding there way into almost every house hold. These games are now a normal part of any childs day to day life, I wanted to look past this and go back to when games where played in arcades and not in your front room. 12. My Animation My animation is based on the army and the things they go through, the falls and objects that he has to jump over are metaphors for things that the army face day to day. I have made it look like the old games like Mario and wreck it ralph because I think this old jumpy video game look is really effective and gives off a feeling that you can make a difference. It is a stop animation film using characters and scenes that I have cut out by hand and moved in every shot, it took more than 150 images put into order and played on a real to creat the short film. I chose to make everything black and white because I like the contrast and it gives a very bold look, it also gives the message that soldiers go from one extreme to another and things can be totally different. I have lined the important images with gold pen to draw your attention to that character or object and to indicate the importance of it. Materials: White paper Black paper Gold pen Coloured papaer Tools: Camera Tripod Scissors Craft knife If I could re-do my animation I dont think there would be a great deal I would change on it, I would probably do more research into colours and the meanings behind them to see if there was another way of putting a message across. 13. workshops Throughout this unit I have learnt new ways in which animation works and how it can be created. Flip book animation Stop motion animation Sand animation thaumatrope 14. Chalkboard animation I presented a class on chalk board animation, this is a piece of chalkboard animation I have done, chalkboard animation is stop animation where you draw something and take a picture you then move it and take another picture, you repeat it over and over. You then play the pictures one after another to create a movie, this is how most animations used be made, now it is mostly done on computers. 15. Chalkboard animation Materials: Properties and qualities: Chalk What is the material like? What can the material do? Soft dry Intricate details and patterns. Shading tone Health and safety: Dont run with sharp object. If you drop anything, mop it up as it could be a slip/trip hazard. Wipe up dust with wet cloth and do not ingest as it could be hazards. Equipment: Instructions for safe use of tools and equipment: Chalk board Camera tripod Dont throw equipment around Dont run Techniques: Set camera facing chalkboard Draw image Take a picture Draw the next image and repeat this process until the video is complete. 16. Flip book animation What is flip book animation? Flip book animation is when you draw a picture on a page then on the page below you draw the next motion, you then repeat this over and over until the animation is done. So that when you flick through the pages quickly the image seems to move like a short film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UocF4ycBnYE 17. Flipbook Animation Materials: Properties and qualities: Paper Pencil pen What is the material like? What can the material do? Soft Dry ridgid Intricate details and patterns. Shading tone Health and safety: Dont run with sharp object. If you drop anything, mop it up as it could be a slip/trip hazard. Equipment: Instructions for safe use of tools and equipment: Camera tripod Dont throw equipment around Dont run Techniques: Draw an image On the next page draw the image one movement further Repeat this cycle until the animation is complete 18. Stop motion animation Stop motion animation is when you create or draw a picture, you then take a picture of it and on the next image you draw the same picture as if it had moved slightly, you take a picture and repeat this until your animation has finished. The images are then put on the computer in order and put into an app such as movie maker where the images are made into a film that funs through the images to create a film. Equipment: Camera Tripod Paper Pencil http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vZ0iqUS6sg 19. Stop motion animation Materials: Properties and qualities: Paper Pencil pen What is the material like? What can the material do? Soft Dry ridgid Intricate details and patterns. Shading tone Health and safety: Dont run with sharp object. If you drop anything, mop it up as it could be a slip/trip hazard. Equipment: Instructions for safe use of tools and equipment: Camera tripod Dont throw equipment around Dont run Techniques: create an image On the next page draw the image one movement further Repeat this cycle until the animation is complete 20. Sand animation Sand animation is a lit up table covered in sand with a camera above it looking down, this is then connected to a projector that shows the images on a screen as you push the sand around into shapes it gets filmed by the camera above and creates an animation film. Equipment: Sand Projector Camera Light box http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=518XP8prwZo 21. Sand Animation Materials: Properties and qualities: Paper Pencil pen What is the material like? What can the material do? Soft dry Intricate details and patterns. Shading tone Health and safety: Dont run with sharp object. If you drop anything, mop it up as it could be a slip/trip hazard. Equipment: Instructions for safe use of tools and equipment: camera Dont throw equipment around Dont run Techniques: Draw an image On the next page draw the image one movement further Repeat this cycle until the animation is complete 22. Thaumatrope A disk with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to blend into one. Equipment: Card String Pen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vypEOfWjzv8 23. Thaumatrope Materials: Properties and qualities: Paper Pencil pen What is the material like? What can the material do? Soft Dry ridgid Intricate details and patterns. Shading tone Health and safety: Dont run with sharp object. If you drop anything, mop it up as it could be a slip/trip hazard. Equipment: Instructions for safe use of tools and equipment: Elastic bands Dont throw equipment around Dont run Techniques: Cut a circle of paper with two holes in the same place on each side. Draw an image on one side. For an example a bomb And on the next side draw the next image without the image befor for example the explasion from the bomb. You then spin it using the elastic bands on each side and it looks as if the images form one and play a small animation over and over again. 24. Evaluation For my primary research I looked at old games like Mario and how theyve progressed through time from pixelated animation characters to sharp edged and detailed. I also looked into this in my secondary research. Also in my secondary research I looked into many different animators and animation companies that are known worldwide such as Disney etc. I did some research into other artists and how they create there animations using things such as play doe and other thick modelling materials. This was important for me because it helped me work out the best way for me to produce my animation and what I could use. Looking into animation I did some of my own experiments looking at sand animation, shadow puppets, flip book, stop animation and thaumatrope. Looking into these helped me decide that I wanted to use stop animation to create my final piece. Whilst creating these samples But I also liked the look of the shadow puppets using the black on white paper. The contrast is so powerful and is easy to see, it jumps out at you and also pulls you in as you want to see what will happen next and it gives off an element of suspense. On the background I also used black paper cut outs creating definite lines and used a gold pen the draw lines on the important sections of the scene. At first to explore my theme I looked a bit further into what army personnel wear that benefits them, I was going to use these in my animation in some way. I was thinking of getting my character to pick them up and wear them, But I decided this may not look as good as I wanted it to and may take away from the message I was trying to portray. So instead I decided to use an old game style looking at the pixilation and style of the characters. Still basing my animation on the army I decided that I was defiantly going to go for a retro look. After deciding this, instead of using an army character I decided to not put any army things into the animation and just put a hidden message behind it so that you have to look deeper into the story. I used the dark paper on top to show that war is dark and sad, but I used white paper on the background to show that its not all bad and that there is light at the end of the tunnel, the gold lines represent importance for the soldiers and what they do. The red and green flashes I used at the start and end of the animation represent the good and bad in everything that goes on. I left the character only wearing shorts to show that no matter what we will always get through things and its not the weapons and armour that make us get through it but its our will power that pulls us through, the weapons and armour just help us complete our missions. I do not want people to be mistaken and think that I am trying to portray that all soldiers will die because that is the opposite of what Im trying the say and after completing it I realised that I should have changed the ending to a more upbeat finish. Throughout my animation and the work that led up to it I was not really influenced by any artists, I tend to just try things and if I think they work I will stick with them or change them round and try other options, it always seems to work for me and I like working in this way. 25. What worked? I think my final piece worked well with its format and composition, I feel the old game style was good and was a very effective idea. My colour schemes worked well for me and I feel they give the message that I wanted to portray, hopefully other people can see this if they look deeper into the story and meaning behind the whole animation. What didnt work? There may be one or two things that I could have improved on and made better. I think it will have looked better if I had used more photo shop and put more dialog in. using the computer to create some more of the images could have been a lot more effective and given a bigger impact, it also could have given off a lot more of an old game feel and made things look a lot more pixilated and retro. Because the final piece for this project is so big I could have used my time more appropriately meaning I had longer to spend on the final piece and it could have given off the feeling I wanted a little more. I also could have learnt a bit more about movie techniques and things I could create or change using the computer.
